Secure the Stations - NOW

Thanksgiving tragedy averted:
  • Overnight in 011, a subject walked into the 011th District Desk with a fully loaded AR-15 strapped to his chest and equipped with multiple magazines. Only pure luck and quick thinking allowed an officer or two to jump him before he was able to cut down the entire desk crew and responding officers.

Can someone please secure the station lobbies, lock the doors and make sure that our brothers and sisters aren't sitting ducks for the next psycho?

And lose the idea that manning the desks with civilians is a good fucking idea.

Remember this?

Consider the fact that at the newer stations, ALL Officers must secure their weapons before entering the processing area and walk around the station UNARMED until finished. If this puke had chosen 010 instead of 011, the outcome might have been catastrophic.

and yet the 3/w desk sgt will defend the rites of the homeless fucks to use the lobby as a crashpad AND buy lunch for a few of them on a regular basis. I bet never once did the officers that work inside pat those mopes down for weapons cus that 'would violate there rights and its a public building'. did you ever see the amount of people waiting in lines at that desk and lobby area??? its like they own the place!!! the city/CPD needs to wall that desk off w/bulletproof glass and make the people who want reports wait outside to be buzed-in 1 at a time. its only a matter of time before a p.o. gets hurt or killed in that place, they are sitting ducks - literally. oh well guess it wont matter cus the rumor says desks are going civilian anyways

Small towns have better security than Chicago. After 6pm, you have to be buzzed into the lobby. The desk crew is behind glass and locked doors.

The first station they should secure is 111th Street. You don't even have to go into the station. You could cause major damage from the street the way they have the front of the building wall to wall glass and the front counter running from end to end like it's a fucking theater!

The people who are allowed to design and build these districts are obviously not thinking about defensible space, or public safety by the way they incorporate their "wow" factor details into their blueprints.

Architects are usually in la-la land anyway with their curved walls and glass bullshit, but whoever authorizes their designs needs to remind them that something just like this video could happen in the building they are conceiving. Perhaps ask the architect how he would feel if HE had a couple fingers blown off just for showing up to work one day.

By the way, Happy Thanksgiving everyone. And to all the officers working today, there ARE people who think like you, worry about you and appreciate what you do.

Hoping this is not true, or just lucky I'm rdo in 011. Been telling everyone that 011 is the most unsecured police station in the nation, lets start with no pillars in front to stop a car from driving into the station from blowing it up, also up standing citizens walking in the doors with out metal detectors looking for their baby daddies causing a ruckus, and bums sleeping/ walking in and out of the lobby spreading all types of air borne pathogens/pissing/and spread diseases looking for human services, mold growing everywhere, all types of exposed wires hanging everywhere, cameras that haven't worked since the 70's, computers in the processing rooms that are beat to hell, electronic equipment that malfunction all the time, processing rooms where the offenders are in reach to do what ever, also bums / anyone can walk through the lot and have access to our parked vehicles, 011 being an area needs to renovate, its really terrible working in those conditions, plus where suppose to have citizen workers taking care of business now in the future up front now......but hey working in 011 or any other working district were suppose to be tough, least in 011 we have a gate that is sometimes closed up front to stop the bad guys from walking behind the desk or in the district.

This incident is unfortunate. Recall the gang attempt to fire a rocket into the 011 district ? Manning the desk with mostly civilians is still a good idea. But, what would be done is retrofitting all stations in a similar manner as just about every police department in the country does. The desk should be behind bullet resistant glass and the lobbies should be made much smaller.

To create a factility such as say, Oak Park where the station is like a gigantic ghetto currency exchange would create the appearance of a siege mentality, and violate the basic concepts of Community Policing. Until a few cops are killed at which point the corrections will be made. Remember, this is the Mayor who was behind Obama, and we all know that Obama is about appearance not substance.

Omg! God bless those officers for saving themselves and any civilians. Its a shame that nothing will change in this department and they will continue to decimate the ranks, leaving one po on the desk or just replacing with civilians. Its a shame that the mayor and this hack we have as a superintendent cant admit police officers are trained law enforcement professionals, in the same vain as a doctor is to the medical profession, a lawyer in the justice system, a teacher in the educational system. This city needs more law enforcement officers. Although as merit hacks, assume positions of exempt status, the superintendent comes to mind, it would appear a trained monkey can do the job, its not so. The men and women working the streets everyday have earned their Ph'ds and its for that reason this city has not been lost to the savages and their accomplices, your local politician. Stay Safe, hold your head up, officers, and thank you on this day of thanksgiving. Its because of your service and your professionalism that this city can enjoy a day with friends and family, while you are out, in dangerously low numbers, keeping the city safe.

I hope someone takes this VERY seriously.

You're talking REAL firepower with an AR-15 and no one at any station is on "high alert" at their desk.

All of you are VERY, VERY, VERY lucky you dropped him before he dropped all of you.

All police stations should be secure with a bulletproof glass separating the front lobby and the actual police room (like the suburbs have in their stations).

It would have been a huge tragedy to read about how some mental came and shot up an entire police station.

BE THANKFUL this Thanksgiving, all of you at that station dodged a bullet.

If that was a trained terrorist - Chicago would have made national and international news.

As to the "people in charge" - wake up and assess the situation. You need to CHANGE things!

dont worry, the city has already spun this as just being a weapons turn in. No mention of officers subduing him, fighting with him and him having several extra magazines on his person. I read breaking news about 7am and it said the man had been arrested in the station and walked in with a fully auto assault rifle. by noon the city must have called to tell them to change the story, it now reads as the man just walked into the district to turn in the rifle.. they completly downplay the story and end it by saying the officers called the subjects family because he seemed unbalanced. so the family showed up and took him to mt sinai for psych eval. The people and media need the real story. The officers involved should get a damn life saving award because this guy was intent on killing police officers last night. He said it several times and was insane. disaster averted, however the public never will know what the real story is or how close people came to being killed last night. completly terrifying just thinking about it. A man walked into a police station on the West Side with a fully loaded assault rifle and said he was turning it in, authorities said.

The 28-year-old man did not point the rifle at anyone when he entered the Harrison District station shortly before 4 a.m., authorities said. Police called the man's family because he seemed unstable and his family took him to Stroger Hospital for evaluation.

The gun was an AR-15 assault rifle and had a 30-round magazine that was fully loaded, authorities said.

Earlier, authorities indicated he had been arrested, but that information was not correct.

Off Topic...SCC, the location of the new 012th district station is an asbestos hazmat site! Apparently, the city's Public Building Commission failed to inform the company that is installing the new station's geothermal heating system that existing underground heating pipes contained asbestos. Now the workers have been exposed and the soil is contaminated (800 tons of which 300 have been hauled away). What brilliant people we have working at the PBC. This worries me very much since I work in 012 and drive around this area daily. The community has been exposed as well. Heck, there's a school across the street! Our existing station has asbestos and now I have to worry about our new station having it as well. I hope the FOP sounds off on this.

The closing of Area 4 and 5 will save millions of dollars.

How?

Starting Feb 1, absolutely NO Detective Division OT for extension of tour. This comes straight from City Hall. McCarthy has no say on it. The Areas have the manpower and the commanders will be expected to make this work. Robbery Dicks will be part of a District Team and will be expected to hand off jibs to the next shift.

Look for all Areas to go to two 10 hour watches in the new contract.

Rahm's administration is also working with Alvarez to
severely reduce court OT. One proposal is to only subpoena the officer for the time he is expected to testify. No more sitting in the library when the state is picking a jury.

After Feb 1 expect court subpeonas to vary from 0900 all the way to 1500 hours. Officers will have to submit a To/From report if they were in court and did not testify.

Rahm has figured out that almost 30% of the police budget is OT and more than half of that is coming from the D unit. The police budget is almost 80% of the entire city budget.
The changes will save hundreds of millions of tax dollars.

If its true its time for us to bring up station security at our roll calls. There could be things done watch by watch to secure our lobbies and parking lots. The city will not act until a Detriot style attack happens here. The response will be very limited just like it was with the south side police impersonator couple of years ago. Thor was murdered in an unsecured lot. We didn't pick up the ball and start filing grievances for unsafe foreeable conditions. The 001 district back in the early 2000s had a situation Guy pointed a gun at a desk officer, but gun misfired. Nothing was done. Suburban stations are usually secure, fortfied and not open to the public.

My hat is off to the quick thinking officers who defused this recent incident. It easily could have been a tragedy of immense proportions. When ISP District 4 moved from Crestwood to 83rd & King Drive, our desk area was behind ballistic glass with a locked access door. I think all police stations should have that level of security. Oh wait, the Mayor and other Chicago politicians don't value the lives of CPD coppers. What was I thinking.

Could have been ugly. Good job by the Desk Sergeant. 60 rounds from a .223 assault rifle would have made for a very, very bad holiday for a number of police families. Wounded or dead is a horrible way to end the day for the midnight crew. The guy changed his mind and didn't shoot the place up or commit suicide by cop, which it sounds like were his intentions. So Rahm, still think civilianizing the desk and lockup is a good idea? Let’s see, 3-4 police aides dead, a few sworn coppers also dead or injured when they respond. How's that lawsuit going to reduce you’re budget? When they sue the City and you personally for intentionally neglecting the health and safety of the employee, the taxpayers lose even more at your hands. Maybe you can find another tax to make up the loss, you puke. Emanuel you’re a dog, maybe this guys should have turned the gun into you, you probably would have sold it to the highest bidder. McCarthy you’re a pussy puppet to the politicians, go work in 011, I’m sure the coppers there would keep you safe, they’ve shown today that they can and will. Happy Thanksgiving to all the CPD, enjoy some time with your families and friends before going in to battle the beast.

We all know what is gonna happen now: nothing. When PO Soderberg was murdered by that savage there was about 2 months of concern for parking lot safety. This concern quickly evaporated because at the end of the day our department really doesn't care about the safety of the average officer. The city will spend millions to defend Ed Burke because of a threat made decades ago but even after the murder of PO Soderberg nothing has been done to materially improve safety at department facilities. Where is the FOP on this? It should be front and center but it isn't.

They will be able to use this upcoming crisis for campaign photo's op's though so do not worry about the crisis going to waste.

We have much more to do! There are corporate capaign fund raisers to attend and the political apparatus needs to get their hands on that money. They earned it. Yeah, lets get rid of the desk crew and put all civilians on the desk. Again, anyone who has been around a while knows we have shooting incidents in district stations over the years. This could be a tragedy waiting to happen if we get rid of desk crews.

11/24/2011 09:52:00 AM

So now you want P.O.s on the desk because a tragedy could have occurred. Any other time or post you are against the "desk dollies" and "do nothing police" sitting on their asses collecting a paycheck. Either you want some cops working inside on the the desk or you don't. Not all desk cops are dogs. Please make up your mind or STFU!

OT:

Do you think that the corporations care about our little police district stations and their security?

I say the corporations have already spoken with there actions.

They want more tax breaks.

The corp's are writing our nations policies and laws right now in a manner that will benefit only them.

The corporations international budgets will soon exceed this nations budget and then who has concentration of power and along with it the rule?

What will be the purpose of holding elections be when the people are no longer being represented?

Think about it.

Just today: "India opens door to foreign supermarket chains" is the headlines..and WalMart is chomping at the bit to get in there. Over a billion customers in India

(Reuters) - India threw open its $450 billion retail market to global supermarket giants on Thursday, approving its biggest reform in years that may boost sorely needed investment in Asia's third-largest economy.

---------

Imagine the impact on US government this will have as corporations expand there reach globally and join the banks in the too big to fail cartels.

Corporations already own our puppet government today as they buy the policies they need via campaign contributions.

Now they are getting even bigger with more influence.

You have to wonder about the near future. The money these global corporations will have makes the nations borders meaningless. Make governments meaningless puppet shows because when push comes to shove it's all about the money -- not morality -- not the laws -- the corporations do not have to obey your laws.

Look around people. The pension agreements mean nothing. The collective bargaining agreements mean nothing. Land deeds mean nothing as banks are foreclosing on property that they are unable to provide the documentation for. Bank doc's are being submitted to the courts making a mockery out of the system because the doc's are forged and there is no one bring the banks to justice.

If the written words on contracts are meaningless what value does the US constitution have? It's just words on paper that the Government is either unwilling or unable to back up.

11/24/2011 03:28:00 PM

================

Hey if someone gets shot don't worry. Burke will be there to hand out flyers afterwards warning people to "be vigilant" but continue to go about our daily business of shopping and spending money.

After all if we stop shopping and the transfer of wealth to the corporations and political apparatus then the terrorist have won...don't you know that?

Being someone who works the desk regularly I bet when I go in tonight our brainiac of a commander will have typed out a new in-station rule about us having to keep our vests hanging over our chairs. I mean what the hell is that going to do??? Uhhh, hold on psycho while I put my vest on, ahhh, there, that's better now u can kill me, I'm wearing my vest. That's the solution to everything. If a civilian would get killed by a psycho in a police station I bet the city would take action then but for us, huh, we're expendable. They'll say, hey, it ALLL part of your job, you are paid to be targets, these are the risks you signed up for when you took this job. And by the way, I DO pay attention to who is coming into the station and if it wasn't for the sound the revolving door makes it would be a lot harder to know when people come in, so in the spirit of the holiday, I guess I'm thankful for that much. Oh well I've got a few more years to go...I hope I make it out alive!

We have the governor closing down mental health facilities because the corporations like CME Group and Sears want tax breaks and there's no money to fund them.

These mentally ill people will end up on the streets and with the mayoral edict that the stations will be opened to house the homeless guess where they are going to end up?

They will be able to use this upcoming crisis for campaign photo's op's though so do not worry about the crisis going to waste.

We have much more to do! There are corporate capaign fund raisers to attend and the political apparatus needs to get their hands on that money. They earned it. After all those corporate tax breaks rewarding the corporations for destroying jobs, destroying the tax base, idling America. The American dream is now a nightmare -- enjoy the chaos.

The sad thing is that this current crop of bosses, including but not limited to the Superintendent, are not approaching this issue from a purely "police security" perspective. They are more concerned about the political ramifications of what they do and how the Department is perceived by the voting public. Anyone who's been on this job for a while understands the need to have sworn personnel on the desk at all times. Allowing civilians to take on these positions potentially puts the entire facility at risk. Hopefully no one sworn will ever be injured or worse, but this IS Chicago and we've seen bizarre occurances over the years that resulted in trajedy that could have been avoided. Even after the incident nothing usually changes.

To the idiot who questioned the use of NYPD slang here in Chicago, see earlier comments, I just received a memo that all such language is now appropriate.

Also the Superintendent will now be referred to as the Commissioner and Districts will now be referred to as Precincts.

Also two individuals in each precinct will now be delegated to fixing tickets as a courtesy to friends, close relatives--to include fifth cousins, neighbors, political hacks, the guy you met at the bar, the street cart vendor who gives you free pastrami and rye "sanwiches", reverends, rabbis etc.

Any departmental regulations regarding firing your weapon while in an inebriated state at street lights will not be referred to as "regulations". Either the word "hint" or "suggestion" shall be used.

Also any arrests of off duty Chicago Police departmental personnel by other local law enforcement agencies over disputes regarding family members receiving tickets will not be considered an "arrest".

"Misunderstanding" will be the word used and "unprofessional" shall be the word used to refer to the agency that made the non-arrest.

Now if you will excuse me I have some skels I need to catch after I shoot out some glowing orbs that hang on poles.

Its time somebody wakes the hell up and secures these stations.

As far as just sitting there, not bad getting paid time and a half for sitting there
One other comment is the reason more guys than needed are called for the same day is that the ASA and defense attorney dont know how long a witness will be on the stand and if there isnt another witness waiting in the wings, the judge gets upset. Not right, but if you have been on the job anytime, make arrests and have been in court, you would know the judge runs his courtroom. This is Cook County and that is a simple FACT Once again not right, but you or nobody else is going to change that, so relax and live with it

Simple solution to keep ASA's from requesting all officers on an arrest report to appear in court.
Have the ASA put CPD overtime in their budget. Technically they are ordering the po's to court, so the ASA office should have that OT in their budget. Believe me, if that happened, they would read over all the reports to see who was involved and who was necessary to appear in court. Now it doesnt matter to them because they arent footing the bill
Bet Rahm wouldnt mind having the court OT being switched from the city or CPD budget to the ASA or County budget.

One proposal is to only subpoena the officer for the time he is expected to testify. No more sitting in the library when the state is picking a jury.

That's a great idea! I just got a notification for 26th that I had absolutely nothing to do with, Really don't feel like hanging around down there on my RDO, thanks.

You had "nothing to do with" doesnt work anymore. If your on the paper then you are knee deep. Dont believe me?? Maybe as a few former SOS guys who were on the paper but "had nothing to do with it" have to say. If your on the paper, then you were there.. You participated in one way or another and you must appear in court. stop barking you frightened little dog. Nothing to be scared about going to court... wayyyyy too many people nowadays are terrified to go to court and testify. why?? It looks ten times worse when you DONT go to court.. Unfortunatly some of the idiots on this job think that if you dont go to court it just all goes away... Oh no, it doesnt go away, it just comes right back to get you a year or two later in federal court... aaahahahaahahahah, I love being so damn negative!!! ahahahahahaha

The changes will save hundreds of millions of tax dollars

STOP making shit up cause you didn't make Dick or couldn't pass the test! They tried all that stuff before and it all fell on the ASA'S face! The ASA or Cook County State's Attorney hates us and doesn't care what it costs to get a conviction! She is not about saving money for the City of Chicago. She is about HER!!!! Also by handing of investigaitons to another Detecitive they have to show up as well to court. Again they tried that before and it fell right on there face again cause cases were getting fucked up! Also where did you go to school with the math. CPD's budget is or was 1.2 billion. Where does 20-40 (at its highest) million equal 30% of 1.3 billion? 30% is over 300 million! SHUT the fuck up you goof!!!!! We don't need this crap when this Department is about to become NYPD

OT --

Power outage for over 2,500 people in Bryn Mawr/Kimball area caused by one of those silvery Mylar "heart" balloons short-circuiting power lines! Real good shot of the fried remains draped over the wires.

I never realized those things were CONDUCTIVE. Have seen plenty of them drifting around...

Any time linemen have to go up and work, it is a dangerous job. Should not have to do this over some two-cent silly piece of plastic. A little responsibility, a voluntary sales ban on these in the city too much to ask for? Hazard to infrastructure. Balloons are fine, just not these particular ones.

11/24/2011 05:10:00 PM

Oh, yes, let's legislate balloons!

And ban squirrels, too, because they're usually the cause of those power outages, when they get into the boxes. BAN SQUIRRELS NOW!
