$10,000 Reward

  • The police Memorial Foundation is offering a $10,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest; call 1-888-YPO-SHOT (976-7468). The foundation's representative at the press conference said it is giving Lewis' family a $50,000 check in coming days.

And if the story couldn't get impossibly sadder...

  • Lewis, who McCarthy said has received 81 commendations for his police work, had proposed to his girlfriend, Tamara Tucker, only after asking her 18-year-old son, Keyonta Thomas, for permission. On Christmas morning, Lewis pulled her son aside and asked for her "hand in marriage," said Thomas, 18.

"I am just at a loss for words," said Thomas, who said he saw Lewis as a father.

"He was just as a father (to me). ... He took me in as his child."

Ron Tucker, Tamara's father, also mentioned that the couple had just gotten engaged Christmas Day.
Funeral arrangements to be posted shortly.

outraged and unbelievable Why do we have to work so hard for so little. Just imagine if nothing happened his boss might not have given him CU to get married or to attend a family function. these are the same bosses that will cry over this officer at the funeraal.

There was a time when NO ONE moved in a neighborhood where a police officer was attacked in any manner, let alone killed until the pressure got to be enough that his own homies would turn in the offender(s). Now we have "leaders" holding a press conference whining for the public's help. Those leaders used to be out there making stops and going through houses with us, now McDrunk called the hunt for these animals an endeavor, PATHETIC!!!! 703 days for me G-D Bless all of us in the mean time.

Thank you supt for making it perfectly clear to the public and to the pension board that Cliff responded to this incident in his capacity as a Chicago Police Officer.

We are embarrassed to say that our past supts have debated whether or not some officers died in the line of duty or not, when technically off duty.

And I mean Hillard and Cline.

This means that there are now three, (3) Unsolved Murders of Chicago Police officers in off-duty incidents. If we cannot protect ourselves from the "Beast" that is evil; can the public expect us to protect them? Something has gone very, very wrong in our City and society. Not so long ago, this score would have been unacceptable. Detectives would have been working non-stop. and the courts would have backed them. Today, it's just another stat.

I had the honor of meeting Officer Lewis through work. He always had the best smile and was just such a nice guy. I think the paper called him a "gentle giant" and that is how I always thought of him.

Rest in peace and prayers to your family.

It's sad that in this, the best Country in the world, there are parts of it that resemble some third world shithole. This officer died protecting what, a crucial supply of liquor and pork rinds? Screw Danny Davis, Alverez, Jesse, Obama, and the rest of the race baiters that not only allow, but encourage this behaviour for their own agenada.

R.I.P. Officer, and I'm sorry.

McGoof has a point. The shooters are not in the hospital, they are on the street. If the hospital is full of police, who is on the street looking for the shooter. Over 100 police were murdered during my time on the job. This mass weeping and moaning and gnashing of teeth is a recent phenomenon that serves no purpose.
Mourn at the official service. In the meantime stop standing on street corners at 0300 saluting an unnecessary procession. Get out there and shut the hood down and flush the rats from their holes. Find the shooters instead of wasting time. You're not the first ones to be in this situation. If you want to be the police, suck it up and act like the police.

Any old timers out there remember the "Reign of Terror" that ALWAYS accompanied the murder of a police officer? Doors were kicked in all over, Anyone remotely resembling the offended was slammed on the hood of squad cars by every police car that went by.

Russ Ewing was a busy man in those years, shooters had to get to Russ Ewing (newsman) to turn themselves in so they wouldn't be killed by the police when the noose was tightening.

And this is very important: There was NO 100 officer/ 50 police car procession that ever took place while the shooter was still at large.

The bosses would not allow 100 officers to run a parade, however well intentioned, while a cop killer was on the loose, first things first.

Want to honor the memory of a slain officer? Then CATCH HIS KILLER FIRST! Than we can get about doing the things we do for our dead.

But when the killer(s) are still out there running around, its 'll hands on deck and find the murderous bastard.

I would want my memory honored by a quick arrest.

09;42 You got it right. He jumped right on it, made it in the line of duty, didn't question that the po was off duty, what police action he took, etc. He stood up.
Don't know where all this hate is coming from. Making stupid statements like what if Off Lewis couldnt get CU for his wedding. Contract gets you time off, can get married on furlo and I never heard of an officer getting denied CU on his wedding(cant even happen because you get what 3 days off by contract for a wedding).
Then stating stay away from his family. Who are you to tell him that. You have no idea what he is thinking or how the Lewis family is feeling and what he's doing for the family. The family may be very happy for what he's doing for the family.
I've seen him in action in the hospital after a po was shot and he did as much or more than any other supt. He did everything he could for the family, was concerned for the officer and did everything to have the offender apprehended.
You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for using this as a sounding board against the supt. It should be used to help the family of the po and anything useful to help get the badguy arrested.
And don't waste you time writing the comment "Thanks for the comments Garry"
Whats right is right

Agreed! We have the worst leadership in the history of chicago. All these bosses care about is getting numbers on the mission in 015. So now we have coppers crawling all over each other to get arrests that have nothing to do with the incident. In the end they are all still stuck on numbers no matter what happened and it's sad.

Exactly, if you are standing around at the hospital or anywhere else lamenting what happened you are no help in the investigation. Get out and help find the asshole that is responsible. Everything else is now secondary. As far as the Supe goes, it was stated here and in the press that this is unequivocally a duty death. I give the Supe a great deal of credit for making that decision so quickly. He is on our side so quit complaining about bullshit.

If the on duty police are all at the hospital or directing non-existent traffic, who is left to look for the offenders? It really sounds like you have more interest in yourself than the deceased. By the way all of the vulgarity detracts fom your point, whatever it may be.

Yes, and when your little daughter dies, remember this warm sentiment. You will be expected to go to work - on time - and perform flawlessly. You will be expected not to be distracted or distraught when you get the news. You will NOT cling to your friends or relatives in your hour of need and you will NOT be given any leeway to do anyting except what you would 'normally' do on any other 'normal' day.

You, whoever you are, are NOT the police. Even if someone was stupid enough to hire you and even if you are employed by the CPD. You are NOT the police. You will never understand, so I won't waste energy trying to explain it to you.

I was going to say I feel sorry for you, but I don't. I feel contempt for you. And, if Garry McClueless actually said that at the hospital, I feel complete and utter contempt for HIM, as well.

Please, please waste the time and explain why in a moment of extreme pressure that you cannot control your emotions and do your job. Then tell me how you are the real police and everyone else isn't. It's clear someone shouldn't have been hired. The masses bow in awe for the savior of the CPD has arrived.
