Taste of Chicago

  • Taste of Chicago will be chopped in half to a five-day event next summer, and the city's annual smorgasbord will be moved to the middle of July from its traditional late June start.

The festival will run from July 11 to July 15 in Grant Park, according to a news release from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

  • Cultural Affairs officials said they would consider shortening the event in an attempt to move the Taste back toward profitability, and that the focus would remain on the food served by local restaurants in Grant Park, rather than on big name entertainers like Stevie Wonder who have appeared at Taste in years past.
Good call shortening the fest, moving it away from the 04 July week, and limiting the number of restaurants. But they still aren't charging admission or fencing off the area - bad call. We'll have to see how it all shakes out. At least the ashes and wreckage from the G-8/NATO summits will have had time to cool off.

About time!!

Keep it from the 4th so folks don't stay, north. Dump turkey legs and add more, regs. Pay at the gate so everyone has a rate.

Saw this on the news - one person interviewed said she was less likely to attend if the event was not held on the holiday weekend. So, they aren't charging admission, the suburbanites and tourists won't be there in force as before (no fireworks!), and the honor students will still have free rein to wreak havoc while eating their corn dogs.
Wow. Such progress.

Look no-one wants to go downtown to get raped by the city with congestion fees, parking fees, gasoline prices 20% higher, risk speed trap cameras, red light cameras, fraudulent towing by the clouted city tow truck operators and auto pound just to go down to that overpriced fast food health and safety hazard that cops and EMS can't get inside of in an emergency if they ever needed to.

We can't handle the people on the beaches now without them closing them down for "hot weather" when it's 80 degrees and yet we're gonna run this thing later in July? Idiots.

Oh and by next July. heh.

Have you seen the youtube's on the 200 plus yutes mobbing the Mall of America from a few days ago?

The mass media reports.."well no stores have reported anything stolen..."

The censorship would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

Chairs in the food courts were flying -- people getting knocked down as things were snatched out of their shopping bags. The rent-a-cops stood there pretty much helpless and overwhelmed.

The fights and fiasco was reported to last over an hour which means that it most likely was going on for three or more hours based upon how the media is downplaying these things so as not to upset the public making them fear to go spend their money at the corporate store.

The mass media shows us the aftermath. 40 or more cops standing around after everything has settled down projecting a show of force and protection that did not exist three hours earlier when it all started. Oh look ma..it's not that bad. They have cops there that busted it up right away..

Yeah...that's why only 10 people were busted out of the 200 mobbing the place. Everything fine..nothing to see here. Move along please.

Go lookup MOA Riot or Mall of America Riot on Youtube. Dec 26

Fact is there are so many neighborhood festivals taking place all summer why even have the Taste. The Taste only makes money for connected restaurants to fleece tourist and citizens. Jane Byrne had the best with her Navy Pier festival. Fence it off and charge a fee for top entertainment. Everything after Byrne's festival that was pure bullshit. The politically connected assholes made a fortune off us over the years. Cancel the whole thing!

For those of you too young to remember the origin of "Taste" or were living in the burbs back then here is a brief history of the politics of it:
a. Mayor Byrne, who believe it or not liked the police started it, and based it on Milwaukee Fest. She even sent CPD personnel to Milwaukee to study how they ran it.
b. The first year of ChicagoFest required that an entrance fee be paid as in Milwaukee. However, every cop and firefighter got two free tickets, and it was held at Navy Pier which was not yet developed into the current venue.
c. Jessie "ShakeDown" Jackson felt that an admission fee would exclude people of color, so he protested and picketed at the gates.
d.Once the fee was removed, the Taste became the taste of "Shit" and it has gotten progressively worse to the current point, where people are afraid to come down. Anyone with nothing to do, like a job can come down, hang around and fuck with white folks from out of town, who are stupid enough to pay full boat for what would be a portion of what they would be served at the actual restaurant. Your kids can learn new words they never heard before and rub elbows with people you moved to the burbs to avoid. That is the history of the Taste of Chicago.

for what its worth: I'm sorry but that sub at Navy Pier was not the captured German sub, U-505, but the U.S. sub USS Silversides, a WWII vessel. It was originally to be restored and become a monument and tourist attraction at the pier but the organization ran out of money and, as I recall, got no help from the city. The sub is now someplace in Michigan I think. It was neat to tour it as the guest of some of the group restoring it while assigned to ChicagoFest. Jane Byrne was Chicago's greatest Mayor.

Unfortunately, the taste generated millions in revenue to the hotels downtown and the shopping along Michigan ave.
Tons of tourists came to Chicago to enjoy downtown, the taste, the museums, the fireworks, a cubs or sox game, even the outlying areas of woodfield mall, oak brook, etc....

Just because the city refuses to identify what the real problem is (roving gangs) and allow and back the police in doing their job to re-take downtown back for the good people with families, the city skirts the issue and blames the economy.

How many jobs have just been lost to all the unions (electricians, stagehands, etc....) that were guaranteed several weeks of work with set ups and take downs included.

The money the city lost in this decision will have to be made up somehow, even higher water bills, vehicle stickers, more revenue ticket writers coming out to 022, 016 to write parking tickets.

We are the 3rd largest city in the country, supposedly a world class city, and we can't even put on a 10 day summer festival to highlight the city.

What a shame, what an insult to us all!

The taste causes RD Numbers and crime stats.

New Policing Strategy,

Cut the Taste in half and you cut crime from the Taste in half.

Reference; close the beach when it gets hot.

Reference; manpower shortage.

Reference; break up fireworks display to remote locations.

End Game; less events equal less crime stats. Less crime stats created, with less police, equals good press;

Problem; less police equals less traffic and street stops,

Less stops equals less guns and narcotics confiscated, less gang arrests and intelligence gathered.

More gang bangers dealing dope with less restraint equals your neighborhood kids are in danger.

More kids exposed to gangs, guns, and drugs on the street will be disastrous in years to come.

Hey Rahm, keep spinning your little re-election web. I cut, I cut, therefore I'm the greatest fiscal conservative of all time.

There was no captured German sub there it is at The Museum of Science and Industry. The sub you are talking about was the USS Silversides which Harold Washington forced out of the city and to Muskegon Mi. because he wanted to collect more money from them for having it tied up at Navy Pier. Just think we let one of the most decorated WWII war ships leave Chicago because of another mayor. They used to use the submarine as a training vessel when the Naval Armory was by Monroe harbor.

the Taste really is an outdated concept. If it doesn't make the City money to be used as revenue, to reduce Taxes and fees on City Taxpayers, then there really is no use for it at all. Why should Taxpayers have to pay for all the police and ambulance services, City Electricians, City Street and San, etc. and lose money, or even break even? If there's NO profit that can be specifically proven to be of benefit to Chicago Taxpayers, then it should not even be held.

The guy you're talking about is Bill Hanhardt, former Chief of Detectives. The guy I was referring to was John Hartnett, a deputy chief. Get your facts straight before you make more of a fool out of yourself than you already have. Back then, they didn't "owe" us anything. No union, no protection as a jerk like you has now. We never heard of the word, "grievance." They could cancel our days off whenever they wanted and no time and a half for anything. I said the vendors were police friendly ... interpret that as you want although I suspect that you may have taken a free cup of coffee or power drink in your 3 minutes on the job. If you say you didn't, then bless you for being so pure. I hope you can breathe up there on your soap box. On the other hand ... never mind. Stay in your fucking mom's basement and pretend you know what this job is all about, loser. With idiots like you now on the job, I'm really glad I left. Have a great New Year ... I will.

Settle down there geezer. You do not want to blow an artery.

I already apologized for my error, but even so, you are still a freaking flapping torn pocket. You cannot help yourself. You keep telling more and more about shit that should remain in the vault.

And your "police friendly" was a real good code phrase. Not.

Anything someone did or did not do is nobody else's business and publicizing your business was foolish. I admitted my error, now you admit you cannot keep yourself from blabbing about shit that should never be publicized.

Yeah, happy new year to you too, goof.

i say charge visitors 5 to 10 bucks just to enter. guarantee the city can assign quarter amount of officers from prior years. i will bet money on it. charge them, and they will not come. don't charge them, and they will come. simple.
