Dispatcher Layoffs

Anyone else think the backlogs will get worse when they can't man the consoles at OEMC?
  • INFORMATIONAL ASSEMBLY IN FRONT OF CHICAGO’S 911 CENTER (OEMC) on Tuesday Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. REGARDING LAYOFFS AT CHICAGO’S 911 CENTER

Police, Fire and EMS Operators, Dispatchers and Supervisors being demoted and laid off from Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management

CHICAGO, Illinois — The City of Chicago has agreed on its 2012 budget, which contains layoffs to 911 Operators.

Cuts have been made to the front line of defense in Chicago. 911 Operators answer and dispatch equipment to any Police, Fire and EMS emergency and these cuts will effect the normal daily functions for emergency responses. Manpower shortages will lead to longer wait times for someone to answer an emergency call, which may lead to increased response times. Without these trained personnel available to answer the phones, the citizens of Chicago should be prepared for severe changes in the 911 experience.

The Supervisors, Dispatchers and Call Takers take their jobs seriously and are greatly concerned about these cuts. In a statement, organizers of the protest said: “We do our job with pride and professionalism and fear that these cuts will make it that Emergency Services in Chicago will be inadequate, therefore endangering the health and well being of the Citizens and their property.”

    About Occupy OEMC

This group is comprised of 911 Operators and Citizens that are concerned about the dangerous situations these cuts to the Operations floor can mean to Chicago
Pretty soon, we'll only be handling hand-wavers because there won't be anyone to answer the phones or dispatch the jobs.

Don't you see, crime stats have been dropping each month as more and more officers retire-- no one to take the case reports

The Mayor figures, if you don't answer the calls coming into 9-1-1, then you attack the crime problem at the front end, leaving NO PAPER TRAIL OF THOSE PESKY 9-1-1 EVENT NUMBERS.

Few answered emergency calls, fewer reports, fewer crime

McNut to claim another 30% drop in crime after the lay-offs

Racoon Eyes again could care a ratz ass about anyone picking up the phone when you dial 911. All the connected have protection and access to fire and police 24/7. The rest of us are on our own. Imagine getting a busy signal when you call 911. It may very well be the norm. There are certain things you don't cut back on. Try telling this to the arrogant know it all Racoon.

5 months from now, when the city is blowing the fuck up on a daily basis, and we need to staff extra calltakers and dispatchers we can probably tap the tma pool to answer phones.

2 months after that, we can read the sun times annual story on calltakers making 150k a year for working overtime.

Good thing there was no bullshit going on with strongarming motorola under the leadership of Huberman and Trotter.

Even better, the 310k a year for Jfled to run cpd and oemc.

Heres what you can do with the money you save from destroying peoples careers.

Buy a new fucking keyboard or two for consoles. Its a fucking joke that the keyboards are so old that the numbers and letters have actually been worn away.

Maybe instead of shitcanning employess the city can sell the eyesore artwork that they paid a left nut for in the lobbies.

Again, for all of you who don't know shit about our contract, EVERY SINGLE CIVILIAN EMPLOYEE of the Chicago Police Department MUST be layed off before the first copper can be layed off.

Granted, Daley took a lot of those jobs OUT of the CPD when they created OEMC, the Dept of Revenue and civilianized lock-up keepers Traffic Control Aides other units, but there are still a shit load of people getting paychecks from the CPD that are NOT sworn. They have to go before any PO's go.

Picture this if you will. Back in the late 50's and early 60's the CPD communication section consisted of P.O. operators who answered the phones when people dialed PO-5-1313.

The officers then filled out cards stating the problem and the address and then placed the cards on a conveyor belt which carried the cards to one of several P.O. dispatchers who picked up a card, read it and then dispatched a car.

I don't know how the Officers knew which card to select or if they did it randomly, but either way it was a slow process.

Also, at that time, the city was divided into only two zones, north and south, so even getting on the air was a serious problem.

I can remember meeting a friend who was working days for lunch and the radio was so busy he could not go down for lunch. We said fuck it and went anyway. This was taking a chance because the radio was affixed to the car and there were no hand held devices.

I suspect that that will be the mantra if layoffs occur. Fuck It.

He's destroying this city, not just our once proud department. Burglaries are rampant and don't get investigated, neither do other serious crimes unless an offender is in custody.

Citizens need to get training and arm themselves. Layoffs at the CC Room mean longer wait times for response, if there is a response at all.

I fear it may be too little, too late.

Both Daley's held power for over 20 years each. They crafted and honed the system and it's functions into a well oiled machine. The layout and functions of city, county and state government here very closely resembles that of the mob. In fact the system can continue to operate no matter who the elected officials are. That is how bad it has gotten. Once a new elected official takes over, the rest of the system doesn't miss a beat. The crime family/gov't will just plunder along, on it's own, mostly disregarding the input of the politicians.

Each political group is getting a piece of the ill-gotten gains skimmed from the taxpayers and once they begin getting used to the million dollar lifestyle, NONE of them care any longer about the constituents that they claim to represent. from that point on, their ENTIRE GOAL is to remain in office. At election time the lies just start all over again and the right political activists are paid off and the game just starts all over again.

We are sooo screwed!

A call taker or a dispatcher has no say in the matter. If they do not follow the CPD and CFD dispatch policies, they will be disciplined all the way up to being fired. A call taker or dispatcher that takes it on themselves to alter the CPD and/or CFD dispatch policies is just asking to be disciplined. And will you pay me for my suspension? I do not think so.

The CPD policy DEMANDS that every call either goes to CPD dispatch, call-back, 311 or is forwarded to CFD dispatch, when appropriate, and CPD policy mandates police dispatch on where to send each call, depending on the elements of the call. There is no such thing as a refusal of service on the police side because that is the CPD policy.

Both police and fire dispatch do as the CPD and the CFD requires, respectively, so stop hating on OEMC police and fire dispatch. Your complaint lays at the doorstep of your own department.

Intentional set up for failure...

Blame The Police ("if you greedy coppers had just played nice and took pay cuts and unpaid furlough days...") to set the table for public support for 9.5 taking a monumental shit on pay, benefits, working conditions, work hours and all that.

Then the public will scream, "why do we even need you overpaid & underworked coppers if you never respond on time when we call?"

It will be ca. 1900 but with none of the fear and respect.

As far as possible cuts at OEMC are concerned... It is more than ironic that the powers that be are too cowardly to rework call priority and state unequivically that CPD is out of the responding to stupid-assed calls business...

"My neighbors are at work and their dog is in the locked apartment barking... Send The Police to make him stop..."

9.5 is playing so many games with people's lives just to tout a phony decrease in crime...

Rahm & McMooky's strategy is kinda like intentionally stopping up every shitter in the station... Funky like a mofo but 9.5 is happy because toilet paper usage is down...

"Huzzah" the people shout...

"WTF" mumbles The Policeman...

Rahm doesn't give a shit... Nor do his big money Gold Coast, North Shore & Hollyweird friends.

They're determined to pick the winners and losers.

The Police and the hardworking captive taxpayers have been slated to lose.

The legacy criminal-political & media cabal have slated themselves to win along with the rapidly replicating, straight democratic voting chronic non-contributors.

If we don't start demanding the city council cutting back on there 50 spots and there PENSIONS, which are costing us millions, we are never going to get there attention, and they will continue to rape us dry. We need to wake up and take it to them strong, loud and forcefully.

Layoff zone12 dispatchers hands down the worst ones. They never liten to the radio. On 3rd and 1st watch

… Also get some that don't think they are smarter than us. They often treat us like crap, yell at us, and laugh at us behind our back.

Oh, the hypocrisy...

Weren't two of those dispatchers caught (well, one of them was performing a sex act on the other) in the break room at OEMC just a few weeks ago? Maybe those two should have been the first to be laid off,
since there has been ZERO disciplinary action taken
since the incident was discovered.

12/17/2011 04:49:00 PM

Dude. So what. A couple of folks played a little 'in and out' during break. Big deal.

Some nookie always relieves my stress, why not dispatchers ??

You don't even know who is on your side my friend.

Does the Tea Party have your back? Does the super or the mayor have your back?

Turn off the corporate filtered main stream media and that cult talk show crap and get out in the world and talk to the people without the media spin.

You might just find out that the people you are being conditioned to be though of as your enemies, that are being demonized, are fighting for the same things that you are fighting for.

Occupy is gonna picket Obama demanding he cut the military in half. Way to make him do something de doesn't want to do. We aren't on the same side. Occupy are a bag of tools . . . for Obama and Rahmbo. You keep trying to convince people otherwise. Good luck with that.

Enough $$$$ to Hire Schenkel and he isnt even from Chicago

Does Schenkel take a pay cut???

Maybe then we could keep at least 1 or 2 Dispatchers

Why isnt a CPD CPT in Charge at OEMC

Or oour leaders aren't good enough

Schenkle needs to good now or when G8/NATO is a FAILURE

how many bosses are at 911? why cut dispatchers or is that the pattern for the CFD CPD. Blue Shirts first to go. Bet they hope some get fired after the fiasco during the 5th Period.

We won't need 911 dispatchers once G8 rolls around. According to the 3-day G8 training instructors most POs won't get radios. We'll do everything by hand signals. Maybe we should just teach the citizenry some new "hand waver" signals for "I need help!!!".

Ok jagoff....I've read for years numerous PO's complain about the BS jobs they get from dispatch and how the call taking policy needs to be changed.

I get to choose what calls I accept from dispatch...and I will 19P anything that I see fit to do that to.

Maybe if teams started answering jobs and did their own paper instead of calling on the beat cars who are in raps would help.

OEMC is not part of the Police Department. Let the other dispatchers give back to keep the City from laying off dispatchers. They make about the same as a police officer. Which I could never figure out.

The City Citizens NEED to Occupy 4224 N. Hermitage at this lying asshole Mayors House!

That is where all his bodyguards are that us low people pay for!

Worked zone 1 and I have to disagree with many complaints about the dispatcher. She may have a case of scarcasiam , but I'll take her scarcasiam and competitance over a dispatcher who shows no reguard for officer safety. A good dispatcher will not allow someone run a plate in a traffic stop without first getting the officers location!! Besides 16 district is under staffed that's no secret , but I have to say "what a bunch of lazy dogs ", you may want to complain about protecting the " homeland" but how can you when officers are sitting on domestics for over one hour w/o a rd. Im just glad I don't live in 16 !!!

Ok folks, it's a rally, a protest, a gathering of people who are about to lose their jobs and those who support them enmasse. Occupy is the word of the day, don't kill us for jumping on the catch phrase bandwagon. This is for a good cause. Show up, show your support, strength in numbers, ya know what I mean?!!? My job is not in jeopardy, I have enough seniority but I'm there to support the NEED for the manpower we're losing!!
I'm quite certain the folks losing their jobs would rather occupy a chair at a console than a freaking chair at the welfare office.

Hope to see a good turnout Tuesday!

Sign me -- Fire Dispatch
(btw we are the folks who organized the rally, not to mention we're losing the most manpower up there)

for the last 6 months ive been hearing sgts coding dozens of jobs cause of the backlog and never even going on the calls. it keeps happening. how can one do that? a simple suspicious person or a disturbance can easily and usually turns into a crime or very well a violent crime. how in the hell does this keep going on.

we can hire Gary schenkel the outsider though at over 100K

Schenkel was a Marine. Hillard was a Marine. That is all you need to know. Competence has nothing to do
with Schenkel's two jobs being employed by the City of Chicago. Let's just hope that when Schenkel leaves the next time, it's the LAST time.

These dispatchers r the worst! When did they civilianize the batch? CPd policy not to send officers out is Rahm's money saving idea & killing Chicago. Pay them D2, get retired coppers & let's go back to old Chicago, good for us all. Too many know it alls - females, who'll never know what it's like to be the real police.

can anyone track down what media outlets covered this? I'm having a hard time finding much info other than on ChicagoNewsReport and WindyCityTimes ... WGN did have a video of it last night but did other outlets? ...I actually saw a thread about it on Everyblock, but the staff of Everyblock removed the thread before anyone even had a chance to comment. Everyblock is owned by MSNBC...
