Officer Bitten

  • A brawl that erupted in the lunchroom of an East Garfield Park neighborhood high school today left four female students under arrest and the Chicago Police officer who tried to break it up bitten in the hand.

About 12:30 p.m. a bunch of students began fighting in the lunchroom at Al Raby School for Community and Environment, 3545 W. Fulton Blvd., according to Harrison District Police...

And guess what? Looks like a manpower issue:

  • When the lone Chicago Police officer assigned to the school intervened to try to break it up, the dispute escalated and she was bitten in the right hand three times, allegedly by a 17-year-old girl who was involved in the fight...
Don't the schools have two officers? Or is this part of the rumored budget cutting in the CPS?

Should the officer have been bitten? No. Is the animal that bit her part of a plague on society? Yes. Should the officer have known better and called for backup before putting herself in the middle of a westside high school fight? Absolutely. Will the animal be appropriately punished? Absolutely not. So what have we learned? Let the animals fight and kill themselves and don't put yourself in harm's way to stop them. Had this simple lesson been remembered, Officer Jane Whoever would not have become a chew toy. Food for thought.

It is very common to have one officer in the high schools now alot of school principals took the $32500 for each officer they got rid of. My district has 7 high schools 2 are always 99 and the rest are10-4 unless their partner takes time then they also are 99. No high should be 99 if something breaks out there that officer can get hurt by those young honor students.

I hope the officer recovers from her injuries. Why would you intervene in a fight involving four offenders if you are all by yourself?

This is indeed part of those CPS cuts.
In our district the powers that be decided that our worst high school, an absolute zoo, will now only have 1 officer assigned. This was because the principal wanted to get a $16,500 budget credit by eliminating an officer.
No officer in their right mind would work this school by theirself. So far we've been skirting this order and still assigning two officers to that school. In my opinion it's either two or none. If they don't like it fuck em because it truly is a safety issue.

You could turn into a zombie, werewolf or vampire if you're bitten. Who knows what those creatures carry in them when they go to school.

Good luck, office.

At the hospital, the bitten officer received a RABIES vaccination.

There are six high schools in 007. They all use to have 2 officers each. Within the last year or so two of the schools(sometimes more) only have one officer inside. Say what you want about school officers but this is a disaster waiting to happen if only one officer is assigned to babysit 800-1000 CPS kids who want to fight everyday.

Last week the schools opted to remove officers all together here in 11 and the powers that be decided the schools that do have officers still do this... one inside officer and one officer outside in a squadcar the outside Guy is to patrol the area and take jobs (not school jobs) close to the area
Makes perfect sense to....wait Aw F it im going back to bed

Human bite wounds are worse than that of an animal bite, If the skin is puntured you may end up hospitalized for a day or two so they can run antibiotics into your system. The risk of infecttion spreading to the bones is the main risk. Years ago, a lockup keeper in 011 had to have a finger cut off after the infection spread to the bone.

I graduated from Argo, in "beautiful" Summit just a block away from the city limits, where we had about 6 security guards, but none were officers. I would think a "school bouncer" would be just as effective and cost less than a trained officer.
Not a cop.

BUT.......

CPS has their own Security Detachment. We don't NEED CPD making 60k a year or more being a darn Rent a Cop for the School system.

If the CPS can't handle their own security with current numbers; hire more via the Union. Don't bring outsiders in.

I wonder why the media doesn't cover this type of incident or the shortage of officers in the schools. Could it be because the media is nothing more than an arm of the Democratic machine in Chicago?

Comments ask why the officer got involved when she/he was 99, I suspect she was more afraid of the law suit that would happen if she just let it go unchecked.

I can see the headlines now, "Police Officer standy idly by while students are injured in brawl" "Officer charged with Federal civil rights violations for failing to stop brawl".

This just sucks.

Most Coppers who are assigned to work the school are just playing the time card. my high school had two officers there and they always his in the back room during school hours then would walk out the building after school.. I honestly don't blame most of the kids where complete a shit heads. But if there was an arrest they would just hold them in that back room. I wish they had more presence through out the school instead being hidden.

Yes, but listen to NPR. There is some liberal think tank trying to claim the majority of arrests in schools are for "lapses in judgement" and that the CPD is unjustly soiling these kids records with criminal charges. They go on and on about how the "children" don't realize what their doing is actually wrong and how "the shame of being arrested in front of their friends at school is devastating" to the kids.

They didnt get 32.5 they last and highest they got from the BofEd for launching the second officer was $16,500. Meanwhile they still expect two officers so patrol has told the DSSs to lie and put the 2nd officer on a car but keep him/her in the school anyway.

Rahm has more officers on the street ..... wait ... no he doesn't. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Funny, but it's the ADMINISTRATION of the schools that keeps insisting we arrest the kids. Let's not blame the police for this one.
Years ago, as a sergeant in SVU, I argued the point with many a principal and assistant principal, reminding them they do NOT have the right to insist we make the arrest. Not that I got a a lot of backup from MY supervisors, but at least a few unwarranted arrests of 8, 9 and 10yr olds were avoided.

There's a difference between kids being kids (stealing a pencil off of a desk, pushing and running in the halls, writing their name on a book, etc) and being criminals who understand the concepts of intent, consequences, means and follow-through. Trying to explain this to pampered, entitled administrators or parents is virtually impossible, however.

By the time a kid is ten or eleven, the ADULTS responsible for them should be making it clear what is and isn't acceptable behavior, what is and isn't right and wrong and what will or won't be tolerated by the parents and by society.

Everybody gets a little of the blame here. But, the police? We are just a tool, used by the schools and the parents/guardians, to implement their respective needs or purposes. We aren't the initiators or cause of those arrests coming out of the schools.

You need to wait for back up officer.

The so called students are Thugs and criminals. I inform, teach those that want to learn, but they have no respect for me, for you or themselves. They defy authority left and right.

You play with tigers you're bound to get bit. Keep a distance. They will turn on you in a heart beat.

Let them knock their jaws out, I'm not getting into it. Seen it to many times. They become pack animals and will assault at anything.

Why would any officer want to work in these schools? Why, is it because it is days with weekends off? You do not need trained and armed police officers in the schools. Civilian security should suffice. If this officer choose to work in a school and then choose to intervene in a fight when she was alone, I feel for her and am glad she will be ok, but i cannot defend her judgement.

Because the security and school staff have a hands off policy and no common sense. They call the police for everything criminal or not.You as a beat officer who can't stand going to school jobs and dealing with these "kids" will now be going to the schools to handle the jobs. And now you afternoon guys will have to handle the job and won't be able to tell them to take it to the school in the morning and have the school officers handle your job.
