Hoff Gets a New Job

Gee, does this sound like a guy who was ready to quit and enjoy more time with his family?
  • Recently-retired Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff was hired as a deputy fire chief for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District.

The district's board of trustees on Monday voted 3 to 2 to hire Hoff, 56, a third-generation hero firefighter for the $115,000-a-year position.

Hoff had previously indicated that his departure was to spend more time with his family.

The Daily Herald story is here.

Anyone else want to call "bullshit" on the administration's take that Hoff was ready to retire and his going head-to-head with Rahm over manning and safety issues had nothing to do with it?

I just wonder why Hoff is keeping mum about everything. If he's such a stand-up guy why doesn't he blow the lid off of 9.5's plans? No doubt he's a good guy, but keeping 9.5's secrets?

No secret the Racoon wanted Hoff gone. Spending more time with the family is a favorite out. Hoff was a very decent guy who was for his men. The Racoon has plans for the fire dept. and Hoff would have been in the way. The new guy is a yes man and will do whatever he is told. A lot like our guy at 35th and Michigan. This is nothing new. Good luck to Hoff in his new job. At least he can sleep at night with a clear conscience.

Well that didn't take long now did it?

The only problem that I can see with the move is that he's still in Illinois.

Oh yeah...and this just in.

Chicago home prices fell another 2% in December making us number two in housing price declines second to only Detroit!!

Hey we can do better -- we're number one right?

Anyways imagine that. The loss in value on a $250,000 home is another $5,000 dollars.

How long does it take you to earn $5,000 dollars. How many hours, weeks, months? But wait! We need to look at your take home pay of $5,000 dollars after taxes and so if you are just dividing your pre-tax earnings while doing the math just add another ummm. say about $1,500 dollars since many homeowners are in the $33% tax bracket.

That's work being done for nothing, to break even maybe and who the heck knows if the prices are done falling!

And I ask..did your real estate taxes fall by another 2% or are we all going to raped paying taxes on the old valuations?

Like throwing money down a sinkhole in this place. The politicians borrow more money to help their friends and send the bill to us playing the guilt trip card that we are the ones living beyond our means when it's them using the debt they create as a tool to extract more tax revenues, fines, and fees.

Good luck Mr. Hoff..enjoy the view of the circus clowns in may from your location far-far away.

The city needs to find ways to save money. There are ways to save money in the CFD budget. CFD Local #2 should provide the city with some cost saving ideas that will have the least impact of firefighter and public safety. P.S. Why doesn't Rahm do fundraisers for Chicago schools or for that matter fundraisers for Chicago taxpayers other then his own campaign or personal interest.

All these politicians are so good at fundraising. Burke, Rahm, Madigan, they can sock all that corporate money away for personal gains doing fundraisers for re-election and isn't it time that the taxpayers DEMAND that they leverage that expertise to bail out the city and the states budget crisis!!

Preparing to rob the city pension funds. How long will it be?

You see what NY is doing?

-----------------------

ALBANY — When New York State officials agreed to allow local governments to use an unusual borrowing plan to put off a portion of their pension obligations, fiscal watchdogs scoffed at the arrangement, calling it irresponsible and unwise.

And now, their fears are being realized: cities throughout the state, wealthy towns such as Southampton and East Hampton, counties like Nassau and Suffolk, and other public employers like the Westchester Medical Center and the New York Public Library are all managing their rising pension bills by borrowing from the very same $140 billion pension fund to which they owe money.

http://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=202655

-----------------

With the city and state so hard up for revenue how long will it be before they pull this here. Not just skip the pension contributions but borrow money from them and fill the pension with worthless IOU's.

Update: Banker’s Insulting Waitress Tip Is a Hoax

By Melissa Knowles | Trending Now – 4 hrs ago

"Yesterday we reported a story about a banker who allegedly left a $1.33 tip on a $133 lunch bill at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach, California. The story was shared all over the Web, and we received thousands of comments about the insulting remark written on the receipt.

"New developments suggest that the receipt from the restaurant may have been digitally altered. According to the website the Smoking Gun, True Food Kitchen's spokesperson said it found the original merchant copy of the receipt, and the one circulating the Internet was "altered and exaggerated." The original receipt does not contain the tip "Get a real job." Also, the real bill was for $33, not $133, and the tip given was $7, not $1.33.

"The blog that originally posted the receipt, Future Ex-Banker, was taken down Friday as well...."

On 25 October 2011, Bob Hoff DARED to publicly state he was 'deathly against' cutting manpower on fire trucks, in a well-researched and well-prepared statement at City Council budget hearings.

On 16 Feb 2012, less than four months later, he resigned, telling fellow firefighters 'it's time'.

The man lived and breathed the job. Does anyone really think he left voluntarily? He was fired, plain and simple. Fired by a mean-spirited, petty individual who has no soul.

You two can find the blog to complain anonymously but you can't locate the email address of any FOP officer to tell them what you would like to see in a new contract. Seems right. In the past the FOP had a web page up for officers to state what they would like in a new contract and few took advantage of it.

Below is an email link to make your wishes known, just write what you would like to see in a new contract.

why is it everyone here always seems to forget these people don't get promoted to these top spots without signing a CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT!!! ???

Not a ONE of these people are given that job without it. That means, no matter where you go or how you are pressured, you can't say anything to anyone about what the mayor told you to do or any other communications relating to that person being ordered to do something from the mayor.

Wise up kids.... these fools are just stupid enough to keep people around them who tell them what to do to hide from accountability. And that means airtight contracts that mean the guy with the big mouth gets sued for everything he's worth including their pensions, which are likely forfeited in the event of a violation of the agreement.

There must be a clause that in order to receive the position, the person must never talk about deals made in city hall, bad mouth their respective department, and a gag clause once they leave the employment of the city. Why else wouldnt Hoff tell the citizens and media that they were trying to promote unqualified persons that deal with peoples lives and safety.

Or it could just be the "fire chief fandango", where they work in a series of jobs to keep adding to their pension. Some fire chiefs work in three or four successive jobs to keep padding their retirement.

Though there are some you say why didn't he stay and stand up to Rahm and how can he help the CFD if he quits lets be realistic. We all know that it is not possible to fight and win against our City's corrupt political system.

Hoff instead choose to quit so the disaster that is the G8, there reduction of apparatus manpower and the closing of firehouses would not be on his watch.

We must realize that quitting probably cost him around 30,000 a year in pension because he only had two years as Commissioner. Secondly he then takes a DEPUTY Chief job in a suburb for 75,000 less a year. Third he has to move from the neighborhood where he has spent his whole life and relocate to Carol Stream probably requiring him to sell his house in the worst housing market in 50 years.

This is a proud man who had to make a difficult decision with high personal costs to stand up to Rahm. At least he had the balls to tell him to get f'd unlike 99.9% of the "white shirts" on this job.

Cheers Sir.

The two main reasons the City of Chicago operates or I should say functions is the Chicago Police Dept. and the Chicago Fire Department. Without either it would be total chaos. Maybe, just maybe, this G8/NATO BS. will give some of the sleeping citizens of this once great city a little idea of what would happen if these departments were unable to carry out their assignments. First responders are the first line of defense. We all know that there are large portions of this city that cannot take care of themselves. This could be very intersting. Good Luck and God Bless all first responders.

I hope they do strike, but one of the first things the Illinois Legislature did was pass a law that the teachers union need 3/4 of the members to vote yes. It used to be a simple majority of 50% + 1. Good luck getting 3/4ths to vote yes ( or vote at all). Very sneaky politicians. Now we have a Mayor that could care less about contracts, a police Superintendant, fire commissioner, and Schools Chief all who will do whatever the Mayor wants - regardless of those who they are hired to lead. You would hope all these Dept. heads were hired to infuse new life into their respective Departments, but at the end of the day, they are just point men to do the chopping.

With all the changes I must have missed this one, headquarters is now called the Chicago Public Safety Building? When did this happen? Saw it in an email...

*******

That happened months ago when Fire moved in to the 2nd floor of the HQ building. It is no longer CPD headquarters, it is now the Public Safety Building. Didn't everyone know Fire and Police were combining HQs? They couldn't just call it CPD when Fire is there too.

Just like last year when they dissolved the police's Information Services and replaced it with "Public Safety IT" to service police, fire and oemc? They are dissolving police resources and combining functions to service all "public safety" departments.

They voted 3 to 2? Im sure Mr Hoff can count on the "2" for support thru out his career there....

2/28/2012 06:39:00 AM<<<

"3 to 2", as I understand it one of the main people in Carol Stream F.P.D. teaches with HOFF at the State Fire Academy or someplace like that. No Fire Department or Police Department likes to have a Chief come in from outside.

I wouldn't be surprized to find out that Rahm's hand was in this some how. Move a potentioal mayoral challenger out of town like Richie did with Paul Valis.

Good Luck to Chief Hoff and his family.

This reminds me of the stories of the old days when fire aparatus was pulled by horses. They departments would sell their old horses to daries to pull milk wagons. Every so often when a fire engine would rush by with bells clanging pulled by a galloping team it would be followed be a milk wagon pulled by an old horse who still had the heart of firehorse.

I thought Hoff left "too spend more time with family". Now he has taken another job? Hmmmmmm

2/29/2012 05:37:00 AM

9-5 in Carol Stream versus answering all of Rahm's calls easily equals more time with family. Carol Stream has a pop. of 40,000. The FD has 5,200 employees and a budget of $509.4 million, bigger than the whole village budget at CS. He will do Carol Stream in his sleep.

In the Sun-Times story on this there is a comment:

"Is Rahm REALLY that difficult to work for?"

To which I replied:

"Yes, and HE-L-L YES! (Can't use HELL)

He will cut your pay and benefits. He will want your pension funds to waste on all his friends’ projects. He will snub you and embrace your enemies but use your funerals as a photo op. He will send you into a disaster of his making undermanned, under equipped, demoralized and blame you when it blows up and people and their livelihoods are destroyed. He will lie to you and lie about you; he will fudge crime stats and tell you that everything OK when you lay bleeding on the street or your home burglarized. I could go on, and on.

Yes, Rahm is REALLY that difficult to work for.

Stay Safe. Remember this on Election Day."

And on a comment that Firefighter pensions were generous:

"Firefighter pensions, like those of Police Officers are EARNED and PAID FOR by the Firefighters and Police Officers themselves. 9% off the top of their salaries is taken out for and put into their pension funds (something Rahm wants to have control of) matched by 18% by the city.

Now if you have earned a private pension, wouldn't you scream if the Feds cut the Social Security Benefits you EARNED by 60%? That's what happens to government employees, thanks to Dan (#$@%@) Rostenkowski.

Now politicians, who write their own rules, collect multiple pensions for every office, and can retire with their campaign warchest from all those fat cats who have bought their favors. It's like a big 401k plan; just pay the taxes on it. But they will call the firefighter and the cop greedy and say they are the problem the state is broke, not all the bad things they wasted our money on.

Good Luck Chief, you earned it."

One officer, a trainer of G8/NATO at the academy was dumped for making unflattering remarks about our top sworn and elected leadership during a class session.
---------------------------
He is lucky he was not fired, if that is what actually happened. You don't get to use an official training class to make unflattering remarks about your bosses. I am pretty sure that is covered in the rules he agreed to when he signed on.

Thank you Spiro Georgas for defending the exempts for G-8. Your brother would be proud of you. Since when does department rules suddenly make a different to Spiro? Clean up your own office before you dump others trying to make a difference. Greek lighting.

Rahm is screwing the teachers closing schools. Now firing the entire staff at a school and then making it a charter school do you think the owners of the charter school contribute to Rahms war chest you bet they do The problems at the school would be better addressed by puting the parents on notice they are the one who are failing the children not the teachers Oh we can't say the truth

Hoff was right on and it's important that everyone realize this. Here's an excerpt from a report by the Commerce Dept's National Insyiyute of Standards & Technology on fire crew sizes:

"The four-person crews were able to complete search and rescue 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 5 percent faster than three-person crews, Moore-Merrell explained. Five-person crews were faster than four-person crews in several key tasks. The benefits of five-person crews have also been documented by other researchers for fires in medium- and high-hazard structures, such as high-rise buildings, commercial properties, factories and warehouses."

The report was published 28 Apr 2010. Once Rahm gets his way with CFD on reductions, he'll hit CPD even more. We should all be concerned.

Good for him. Deputy Chief in Carol Stream versus Commissioner of CFD is retirement. Kind of like us going from Area 2 to Carol Stream, but even more so.
His father was killed in the line of duty, so if he can't abide the crap Rahm wants to do, he should just go. And I don't blame him. If I had the time, I'd be out of here as well. So would most of you.
I bank every extra penny so I can leave as soon as possible. I hate this place. The only thing that makes it tolerable are my awesome neighbors and coworkers. The rest is for crap.

Yea for you Bob Hoff!

Rahm had nothing to do with him getting hired there. The chief there has been jerking off hoff for years. He wanted to be a cfd guy but never was so he's trying to make carol stream into a pretend chicago including a two piece squad company.

For those of you who think Hoff is such a great guy your sadly mistaken. He'd throw you under the bus in a heartbeat. I know,
I was under it.

There won't be any changes to CFD until after G8/NATO.
