Gun "Goes Off" Again
Once again, a gun just happens to go off and shoot a child who shouldn't have been anywhere near the gun:
A 5-year-old girl was in good condition early Sunday after she was shot in her ankle Saturday afternoon while jumping on a bed when a gun hidden under the mattress accidentally went off.
The girl was jumping on the bed in a home in the 6400 block of South Artesian about 12:20 p.m. when the gun discharged, according to police. She was taken to University of Chicago Comer’s Children’s Hospital, police said. She was in good condition following the treatment.
The gun was hidden between two mattresses.

Mayor wants middle class to stay in city and not leave for better schools..in whose's life-time will that not happen? Folks want out of the city.
I don't get it. She's on top of the bed. The gun is horizontal right? It's between the mattresses and she gets shot in the ankle. You'd have to really compress that mattress wouldn't ya?
Sounds like something out of Annie Oakley.
Thirteen years in youth/svu.
That gun did NOT go off by itself.
Nice try, though; points for a story I never heard before.
Who the hell would believe that?
OMG! Mom and Dad could have caught a round doing the Wild Thang on the same bed!
Mom always said, "don't jump on the bed". Or was it "don't have a gun in the house". Or was it "don't play ball in the house". I better check Brady Bunch reruns.
This is why I keeps mines atops da dresser.
Guns don't kill people. Mattresses kill people.
Guns aren't the problem, BEDS ARE! Historically, more children have been hurt by these beds than all the handguns in the world, and yet...nobody does a damn thing.
Where are the marches? Where are the reverends? What about the children?
That mattress must be brought to justice. Jessie White Tumblers ought to bring on a march. This is another example why you should never cut that 'do not remove' tag on mattresses. It clearly states you should never place your unregistered handgun there when it's expected that the mattress will be used for trampoline purposes.
Hidden in a mattress when you KNOW you have young kids in the house? Some people are as dumb as the day is long.
Poor kid doesn't have a chance.
did uncle have gun registered with city of chicago , foid card , no criminal record
64th & artesian was a nice working class neighborhood in the 1970's
What happened over there ?
They hid the gun between the mattress because it was a presant for the kids Easter Basket
What were the chances that in an incident like this the child would actually be struck when the gun goes off accidentally? One in 10? One in 20?
The reason I ask is this: how many of these happen where the kid doesn't get hit, and it doesn't get reported. After all, when the kid gets hit, you've gotta go to the hospital, etc. But if the gun fires, and it just strikes a wall and scares everyone - no sense involving the authorities.
Naw it ain't called the wild
thang anymore. It's now the
Horizontal Hula.
I'd like to see the gunshot residue pattern between the mattresses and the path of the bullet for this to believed. Also whether a semi auto where was the cartridge case was found. Old 4N6 Guy
Need more facts. As discribed I don't buy it.

Look for evidence on the grassy knoll!
More like the 18 y.o. play cousin (still in grade school) with the g.d. ink was playing with his illegal gun, and not knowing the difference between the trigger and the barrel, it went off.
"She was taken to University of Chicago Comer’s Children’s Hospital..."
All of a sudden it seems like this is all you hear.

Don't keep a round in the chamber stupid... Oh wait he kept the gun under a matress. STUPID! How. Can you access that if needed? Don't get it. "Honey, wake up, stand up and get off. The bed, I heard a bump in the night!"
I heard the mattress tag was removed. Sounds like a job for the feebs for violation of 15 USC 2(v).
The gun was a stolen Smith and Wesson target pistol with a very light and short trigger pull with the safety disengaged. It was stuffed between the bed rail and the mattress of a twin bed (along the side of the mattress)which was then pushed next to another twin bed to make one big bed! The girl was jumping near the edges of the squishy mattresses when the gun went off. The only other person in the room at the time was a 1 month old who was in a baby car seat carrier seated on one of the beds it could have been worse. Forensic evidence backed up the story.
Off Topic: I heard on the radio this afternoon Chicago will host the first North American gathering of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in April. The irony is endless.

You're missing the point. Like the other guy said, directional force has to be applied to the trigger to fire it - and a significant amount at that. What's the weight on most guns with no safeties in DA? Usually about 12lbs. When in SA it's usually about 4. I'm not sure about revolvers but who the hell keeps one of those cocked and under their bed? I've never seen a gun fire itself even when dropped. I don't see how that's even possible.
I don't buy this for a minute.
I'd also like to know if owner has a FOID card like I, and every other lawful gun owner in IL does.
