100,000 Concealed Carry Permits

  • The Wisconsin Department of Justice says it's issued at least 100,000 concealed carry permits since the new law went into effect about six months ago.

    The agency is required to process applications within 21 days and has been scrambling to keep up with demand. The DOJ initially hired extra staff and moved dozens of administrative workers from elsewhere in the agency to help with concealed carry applications. The rush of application submissions eventually slowed, from thousands a day to hundreds.
Any cheesehead readers notice anything different?

I've been hearing a lot more gunshots up here than I used to. It's not illegal to fire your weapons either, though. People are sighting in weapons and learning how to handle the new ones that they are purchasing.

They've always been able to practice with long guns in preparation for the various hunting seasons as well.

Haven't heard anything about any upticks in shootings either

The only thing different will be the crime rate going down. Criminals will have to hesitate and wonder if the score they are eyeballing is packing. As long as you qualify there is nothing bad about carrying a weapon to protect you and yours. How many cases have we heard about where these Thugs are breaking into homes when the owner is there to steal and worse. As long as we allow our corrupt self serving politicians to herd us around moronic cattle nothing will change. All of these assholes have their own security. We even allow our spinless Aldercreatures to carry guns.

I am CPD and an attorney. If you were to carry a gun in this city and be arrested you should sue the city for a violation of your 2nd amendment rights under 42usc 1983. Granted they will put you through the finger for 5-10 years but you will eventually prevail. If All of the other states in the union have the rightt to bear arms than how the fuck does an Illinois resident not have that circuit court and sutpreme court recognized and constitutional right? We exist in a state that truly does see itself as existing entirely unto itself as its own seperate liberal republic. Illinois is no longer America.

The only change I've noticed is the uptick in CC class advertisements ...and the whining from the local paper.

One of the complaints is that there is no actual contact with a handgun during CC class - but probably because it's not about how to USE a gun but the rules of carrying it.

Everyone born after 1988 must take a safety glass before getting a hunting license, (and probably a permit) so the vast majority of people already know how to safely use a gun.

In other news, it's turkey season right now. I nearly got one last with a Ford. I'm sure that's not the approved method.

As a reformed F.I.B.,born and raised in Chicago, the only change I have seen in Cheeseland since CCW was passed is a few more taverns with "no weapons" signs on the entry doors which is not a problem for me. The irony is after 58 year of living in Chicago and needing concealed carry, I moved to northern Wisconsin recieved my CCW and don't feel the need to carry unless I'm heading to Madison or Milwaukee. I will say that since CCW was passed people seem to be a little more polite in the southern part of the state. Needless to say moving from the windy city was the best thing that we ever did, and judging from your blog SCC we made it out in the nick of time. Keep up the good work.

We live in a state that knows full well how to tax the fuck out of us and make us think it is good for us. They know how to cut benefits when they spend money like crazed morons and then blame the citizens of the state. How many good citizens out here are packing every day or have a gun at home to protect themselves? You might be surprised. Better to take a pinch than be the guest of honor at the funeral parlor. FUCK these selfish entitled politicians.

Google six seconds from safety. Since the legislature passed and the governor signed into law The Safe Neighborhoods Act 2000 anyone with a FOID card can carry. Certain restrictions apply and are spelled out for you at at sites that come up.

Its a RIGHT and not a privelage.While the various State permits are a great advance to CCW and 2nd Amendment they are still treated like a DL.
CCW laws are extremely restrictive as to where you may and may not carry.
Allowing business to post signs(no carry allowed) is counter productive and a violation to the Second Amendment.
This puts CCW holders into a segregated and restricted class,much like when businesses could post signs such as no black or colored allowed,same thing.

Since Wis does not issue non resident permits your most likely a cheesehead.
I suggest you check what states have Reciprocity with Wis before you do any traveling.
As far as CPD goes, Hopefully 99.9%
would tell you to transport it legally
But thats doubtful.

Friend you are as full of shit as a Xmas goose.

The code you're citing was enacted in 1871 in response to the 13th Amendment (ratified in 1865 after the Civil War) as a way to enforce it. I'd suggest if you're really a lawyer, as you say, you read the revisions to it since then and the court's application of it. Of particular interest to you as a "lawyer" might be Hewitt v. Helms, 482 U.S. 755 (1987). If I"m not mistaken the SCOTUS held that:
A state actor is entitled to qualified immunity.
Qualified immunity applies when the law has not been clearly established.

Do you really think if there was a legitimate argument against the Illinois A/UUW statutes that the NRA, ISRA and SAF lawyers wouldn't have used it in the recent Shepard and Moore cases here in Illinois.

Do yourself a favor and get a real lawyer if you ever get in bind and do me a personal favor, don't advocate stupid people do stupid things like carrying a gun. I've got family and friends on the CPD and they don't need more untrained idiots on the streets with guns.

Eta- you really should work on your spelling and language....not a cop

With the exception of a dozen or so years on active duty with the USN, I have always lived in Chicago.

I grew up in Lakeview, attended parochial schools, got my BA from Loyola and MA from DePaul.

I served this country in two wars (Bosnia and Iraq) as an intelligence officer. I have never committed a crime in my life. I maintain my property, and I endeavor to be a good neighbor to all in my community.

Now, having raised a family of my own and relocated to Norwood Park, the hounds are closing in. Shitheads all over Harlem Ave. Strong-arm robberies on the 7400 block of West Touhy. The otherwise quiet hamlet of Niles now resembles a Burma railway station at high noon.

We're a 'sanctuary city' in a bankrupt state. Real Americans and people who've lived here all their lives don't matter any longer; the 'new Americans' are here to replace us and treat this country and city like a toilet. As far as the media is concerned, we're supposed to be thrilled about it all.

An intransigent and hopelessly corrupt political apparatus moves from strength to strength due to the apathy and cynicism of the decent people, misguided activism of the space-cadet liberals, and the machinations of the professional criminal class (unions, cartels, gangs). Nothing will change unless there is an unfortunate and large-scale disaster.

The state and city tell me, a combat veteran whose sole responsibility at the end of each day is to ensure his family is safe and sound, that I cannot carry a firearm, cannot own a firearm without an egregious, byzantine and criminal distortion of my Second Amendment rights...

Well, I got news for you: we're packed, locked and loaded. And not one of our many firearms is registered. May I be damned for all eternity the day I allow some asshole leftist, such as our shit-for-brains governor and his repulsive state's attorney, to dictate what I can or cannot do to protect my wife and kids... To utilize a vulgarism, FUCK YOU!

My paternal grandfather was a CPD patrolman for over forty years. He was adamant that neither my dad nor I would follow in his footsteps. He retired in 1975, and so things can only have gotten inconceivably worse since then.

After having fought hard to return to my beloved city, I'm beginning to realize it's unrequited love. I'm actively searching for opportunities in the Clearwater, FL area and will move the family the minute one comes through. I'm very saddened by these realizations, but there's no denying the facts.

There are very few normal people left in this city and state. For the sake of the family, it's time we abandoned ship.

Keep up the great work SCC.

I'd think that ever since an Aldi patron shot the Aldi robber, that folks check twice before announcing "give me your money". On the other hand, gangs are in Wisconsin and actively gangbanging in places you'll least expect.

Sheboygan used to a "Best Places to Raise Family" city; this winter there was a gang-related murder in its Walmart parking lot. Sheboygan also marked in FBI's Gang Map.

Meth makers are settled in rural SW Wisconsin, which has marked rural poverty and little economic development beyond cows, weed, and some cheese.

There are currently two bills pending to drag Illinois kicking and screaming into the 21st Century and join the other 49 states that trust their citizens. This is the fiscal note on HB148:
~~~
Fiscal Note, House Floor Amendment No. 2 (Illinois State Police)
HB 148 (H-AM 2) fiscal impact is as follows: With a conservative estimate of 325,000 permit applications in the first year, the Illinois State Police (ISP) will require twenty-five new civilian personnel plus two contractual employees for six months each, and $51,000 for equipment and materials representing an increase of approximately $2,978,038 to properly administer this mandate. HB 148 will also generate revenue for the Illinois State Police. The FY 12 total revenue projections are estimated to be at $31,875,000. These estimates are conservative and based on record levels of FOID card applications and firearm transfer requests over the last four years. At the same time, the Illinois State Police will continue to process record levels of FOID applications.
~~
HELLO ILLINOIS!!! want to rake in an easy $32 millionsn and add some needed new jobs!!
From the articel:
"The agency is required to process applications within 21 days and has been scrambling to keep up with demand." Illinois is required BY LAW to process FOID cards in 30 days and even the ISP voicemanil says don't even bother to ak until 60 days. I guess WI can make 21 days because they don't have to put up wih all the corruption.
4: He did not realize that it is not a smart way to act in a state that has issued over 350,000 concealed firearm carry permits.
Yes,if you qualify and have a valid FOID you are GTG.A real assault rifle like the M2 is select fire,the semi auto only M1 carbine is not.
If your town is home rule in Cook County the BS/illegal ord does not apply.
I do not see CCW coming in Illinois until either the courts rule that Illinois laws are unconstitutional or we have a republican leaderhip in the state. Even then, they probably will make so many exceptions to where you can carry, they will make the law hollow. We have one screwed up state with a political class that has done well for themselves. But, Wisconsin? There are way too many parts of that state that I would not want to live in.
If you keep misrepresenting what Zimmerman was told by the dispatchers to bolster your argument, we will continue to delete. He was not told to "Stand down" and was under no obligation to obey such an order if given by a non-sworn dispatcher.
He was told "We don't need you to do that." Big difference.
Furthermore, all evidence at this time suggests he had discontinued following Martin since he had lost sight of him and was jumped on the way back to his truck.
Anything that has come out in the media so far is being backtracked and retracted in recent days.
