Shot Fired into Firehouse

  • Firefighters at a south side fire station are accustomed to dealing with smoke and flames, but may have averted an in-house emergency on Wednesday when their sleeping quarters were hit by some sort of projectile, possibly a bullet.

"It's just a shock to us that something like that would happen," said Nick Cook, a firefighter of seven years.

Cook said someone on the mid-morning shift spotted glass on the floor of the bunkhouse, in the 1400 block of East 67th Street of Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood. The firefighteres got busy and forgot about the glass until making a startling discovery later in the day.

"We pulled the shade. There we saw the bullet hole," said Cook. "It was right below three different bunks. Firemen could have been sitting there. The bunk room is made of different cinder block walls. A bullet could have ricocheted and hit anywhere in that entire bunk room."

No one was in the bunk room when it happened. Outside the firehouse, however, are two unmistakable marks. One goes right through the glass and into the sleeping area. Another just cracked a window.
So are they going to retrofit all the firehouses to be sniper proof? Or is the CFD going to pull out of these neighborhoods altogether and start crating "no-go" zones like exist across much of Europe, especially in France? It's one thing to risk your life saving people from fires. It's quite another to be targets for jagoffs.

The bunkroom, kitchen, and apparatus floor at Engine 4 (Division/Larabee) have had bullet proof Lexan panels for twenty years or more. There are literally dozens of bullet pockmarks in the bricks and metal sheathing around that house. Everyone used it as a shield when going to fire up at the other buildings, so if the return fire was a little inaccurate it hit the firehouse. We used to pick up handfuls of bullet fragments off the roof.

Engine 63's house at 67th and Blackstone is already built like a fortress. Those bunkroom windows are about 8 feet off the ground and only about a foot tall. Whoever shot at them was either lucky or close.

Zones of impunity just like Mexico. The politicians imported the drug culture here with there Sanctuary City nonsense and you're looking at the consequences that they refuse to acknowledge.

Three more teenagers shot tonight on the south side. How many speeding cars today hitting "the children" in school zones or parks during the appropriate time slots?

No money to be made from gangs shooting up the streets. Plenty of money to be made from getting Joe the Plumber, trying to earn a living, rushing to or from work though. Plenty of money to protect the NATO dignitaries too. Miles and miles of scale proof fences, walls, barriers. national guard, air support, marine support, ground support. Pull out the high tech trash cans and put the old ones back in because the new ones present a security threat that is okay for Joe citizen but to risky for the dignitaries.

I remember, back in the 70's, the house over by Cabrini would close its overhead door even in the most stifling hot weather, just for this reason. Anywhere else, CFD would be sitting outside, chatting with passing kids, etc., but not at that house.

I vote for BR glass for the houses. Times have changed and their union should demand it as a safety issue.

If mothers, and their little babies sleeping in their own beds, are fair game then why should firefighters be safe? Our firemen and women will always rush to help the same assholes who do things like this. All part of the demise of this city. Who the fuck will even want to live in a cesspoll like this.

I keep telling you those hood rats have too much free time on their hands. Bring back Selective Service and draft their sorry behinds into the Military. When you start shooting at the firemen, or any one who protecting your sorry behind, then you don't deserve to be around
civilized people. Go to Iraq
or Afganistan and stay there.

not just a sniper rifle.. but a sniper rifle with two full magazines of 308 ammo, a m4 swat carbine with 5 full magazines, a swat flak vest and a fully loaded 45 with 3 magazines. so yes, look out.. somewhere out there someone is gunned up and can do serious damage.. especially with that sniper rifle which im sure the scope is deadly accurate...

also scc, you really need to make that a frontline post. A cpd swat 308 sniper rifle and m4 carbine out there needs to be addressed. Every copper needs to know these guns are out there because with that sniper rifle a bad guy can be sitting up in an abando 2 blocks away and hit a copper on a random street stop with no problem at all.. everyone needs to be aware of this.

First thing I thought of was the fire house across from old Cabrini and it's bullet proof glass and steel plates covering all the windows.

I never understood shooting at/fighting with the firemen and paramedics. Beyond savagery.

I'm just surprised and relieved that more CPD building haven't been sniped.

It will effect me, how?
Hold on, let me channel my inner idiot, ok, here goes... Explain to ME, why Mr. YOU...
Used those capital letters like you, wow, it does make me seem tougher and it really gets the point across.
Ok, so go ahead with the intelligent, well thought out, and concise response why it should matter to ME....

It should matter because if a fire guy is shot, that house will not be able to respond to calls while they take care of their own. The call of a cop shot or a cop in a serious car wreck may be the next one to come up.
They wouldn't be able to respond to a fire that may involve a house or store that CPD/CFD family members may be in - or maybe some little kid.
It should matter because most of the fire guys support cops. Even if there may be some that don't, the majority do.

Do a little critical thinking, (it may be new to you - don't worry it doesn't hurt), and I'm sure that even an asswipe like yourself could come up with a reason why emergency responders shouldn't be shot at. No matter what uniform they wear.

2 blocks is .2 miles, approximately 350 yards. The .308 will be dropping by then, depending on where the scope is sighted in, provided it wasn't mishandled or misadjusted (or if it was sighted in at all). In the hands of a competent shooter, yes it's very deadly at that range. In the hands of some animal that can't even read, let alone add, or say much besides hibbityjibbity, I wouldn't be too concerned.

The M4 is of more concern but it's not very concealable.

My question is, how were these things so easily stolen during a burglary? Us ordinary, second-class law-abiding citizens are required to store our arms safely and securely - why the double standard?

was pretty common back in the late 60s and 70s. fireman and ems people would not go into some of the projects without police escort.

I think it was robert taylor had wells fargo security back then. they brought in an armored car to escort cops and firemen around. I knew a couple of the security guards there. they never had much trouble with the residents. but firemen and cops they did not like one bit. I could understand them not liking cops, but the fire dept I just never understood. I think maybe it was a generalized hatred of the city and they took it out on highly visible city employees.

not a cop
