All this talk about swiping has me baffled. Over the weekend I was denied time due with the explanation being that 10 officers had already taken time . When i inquired about this, i was told by the XO that this is from downtown and it's only going to get worse as the summer approaches. I was told that the the number of P.O.'s available to take off will be (5). Thats amazing to me seeing that there are 20 and yes that's not a typo, 20 P.O.'s working in the front office of 019 with an additional 3 P.O.'s assigned as tac secretaries. Keep in mind, all those officers are Monday through Friday straight days with weekends off. That must be nice to be able to spend every night and weekend with your family. On top of that, you have a traffic car assigned to the 3rd watch that starts at 1100 hours who also is Monday through Friday with weekends off. Must be nice to be related to former Superintendent Martin. Hello FOP units reps and yes i said reps because 019 has two. Where the F..k are you? I thought Mcarthy's plan for consolidation was to put more officers on the street and not more officers inside with weekends off! Kenny should be blasted by his superiors for letting this to continue.
This might be the nail in the tact team coffin for me. Seriously considering going back to the watch and doing absolutely nothing. No perks on tact anymore, and the sun-times article on how we should increase punitive damages on officers was a big demotivator.
The question will be can you grieve it if you have to swipe in the district and the watch secretaries and other inside spots do not?

In 017 it just one swipe per day you work. Teletype came out a few weeks ago saying everyone will swipe once per tour. Looks like the beginning of the end.

Well SCC, I can tell you that in o18, a certain few "fast cats" (and pussy cats) have been swiping in on their own because they have this illusion that this voluntary swiping will preclude 018 from becoming the "pilot program" for swiping in come June 2012. So you ask why would one be so worried about swiping in? Well the answer is that for a handful of years those "fast cats & pussy cats" have been coming to work an hour after their starting time and leaving hours before their ending times. You see SCC, that swipe system will in effect become the great equalizer. Wait till they start bringing in those civilians to replace all of those ofcs working inside, especially in the C/os office(about 10), that will really shake them up. No wonder we have sightings in 018th of "Pam Z" chasing a certain Po. Things that make you go hmmm.

I have been swiping in 011 for the last 18 years as I sit and read the stall walls. That used to be the best source of info next to the 25th district gallows before you came along scc.
The hair gels wont know what the 25th district gallows are but, they sure had some good gossip.
They can tell us to swipe but that is not going to improve morale.

The corner of my card is broken, I can't use it to get gas, the replacements are only available on 2nd watch, at HQ and I work 1st watch. This is work related and I bet I won't be able to get a slip signed for completing this task.

Relax everybody. If it's like anything else on this department - PDTs, computers, squads, radios,in-car-cameras, PODs, ERIs...it's guaranteed to break almost immediately, if it ever works at all...and it will never get fixed. So go with the flow, play along and in a few weeks....back to normal!

Totally agree. All the beefs coming in about getting in early, getting out late, etc., etc. will never work. I don't see what the city thinks it will be saving. We have 'x' number of police slated for 'x' number of hours. Not like there will be any savings. Can I put in a slip for all of the phone calls I get after work or all the typing I do as a det. after hours?

Off topic... Word from a friend in I.a.d who knows told me the next cpd scadel is about to come down the pipe.... Apparently several members of cpd are being looked at by the Feds for associating with the outlaw motorcycle club and other motorcycle gangs at social events. Feds were watching the outlaws and on several occasions found members of the American lawmen club hanging out with them. The American lawmen are mostly members of the cpd. The Feds then notified the dept of this and the ball is rolling on it already. Look for many to be stripped in the near future for associating with known felons and gang members...
If you really wanna fuck with the department, just put your I.D card on the counter at best buy and it will mess up the magnetic strip

Look closely. It's not magnetic, it's optical. There's a barely-visible bar code on your I.D.
That means if the reader is gunked-up with dirt, mud, Carmex that's been smeared on the strip of your card, etc., it cannot read any cards after while.
Not suggesting you do this, but it's something to think about.
The most likely scenario is what others have suggested; in a few months the machines will be malfunctioning and it'll be back to business as usual.

Only a government official would approve something so flawed in the employees favor. Only a spoiled veal would whine about our benefits and wages. I've worked for a living and made more money at other jobs, but our fringe benefits are unparallelled.

Great analogy though off topic. The gist of the story is, even if all had lived, what is the breakeven point for Curly with respect to Moe. While Moe has received $84,000 to stay at home over the past 2 years, Curly has continued to work, earning him an extra $3,120 a year more than Moe in retirement. The breakeven point for Curly to have recouped the money that was forsaken is……… 26.92 years. Is it worth it?
Patton wasn't at Omaha beach, or Utah for that matter. Eisenhower had him otherwise employed.

Here is how that all works, the 3rd watch officer starting at 1100 hrs would have to sign a grievance form as the aggrieved party. He is starting at 1100, not you. He won't sign the grievance form because he wants to start at that time. No one else has standing to file a grievance. No one else is the aggrieved party. And what's the use in having a former Superintendent for an uncle if you can't get what you want once in a while? It sure didn't help him when he took 20 or so days suspension a while back.
As for 20 people working on the commander's staff, kindly provide the names of all these officers to one of the unit reps. Include copies of worksheets and AA sheets. All names are needed,
I don't know what 20 officers you are talking about because I never counted near that many the few times I was in that office. There is the former 019 staff and former 023 staff. I expect the commander will say that all are needed during the "transition" period to fully integrate the combined two districts.
There are many units and several districts with more than one rep due to district/unit consolidation. Detective Areas have many reps. When all this combining is complete the FOP has stated that new unit rep elections will be held and you can throw your hat in the ring and run for unit rep in 019 and straighten things out.
Typically it is the Area Deputy Chief who is supposed to see to it that the district commanders are not hiding excess people. There is very little in the contract about that except that that the Commander is entitled to two sworn staff members and Community Policing is entitled to 7.
Times two districts that equals 4. Community Policing is allowed 7. Times 2 that comes to 14 officers. Tact secretary has always been done by one person. This commander has always hidden an extra person in there. No one from the old 019 or 023 has been dumped yet. I expect that is not too far off.
The unit reps have already contacted the FOP office in response to officer's complaints. FOP asked for worksheets and AA sheets, I suppose the commander just has not handed them over yet. If you have copies please provide them to your unit reps.
You can easily see who has taken off on a particular day by looking in the time off book. That shows who has taken off and when they asked for it. You know about that, right?

I totally agree. When they put swipe machines in districts years ago (and didn't use them), many were immediately damaged by "unknown person(s)." The fact is ... that eventually we will all be swiping and that's that. In a few years it will be as if it always was. It's simply an evolution. You can't stop it so focus on more important issues facing us.

All this talk about swiping has me baffled. Over the weekend I was denied time due with the explanation being that 10 officers had already taken time . When i inquired about this, i was told by the XO that this is from downtown and it's only going to get worse as the summer approaches. I was told that the the number of P.O.'s available to take off will be (5). Thats amazing to me seeing that there are 20 and yes that's not a typo, 20 P.O.'s working in the front office of 019 with an additional 3 P.O.'s assigned as tac secretaries. Keep in mind, all those officers are Monday through Friday straight days with weekends off. That must be nice to be able to spend every night and weekend with your family. On top of that, you have a traffic car assigned to the 3rd watch that starts at 1100 hours who also is Monday through Friday with weekends off. Must be nice to be related to former Superintendent Martin. Hello FOP units reps and yes i said reps because 019 has two. Where the F..k are you? There are not 20 people working in the front office.
People will likely get moved (dumped) after NATO.
There are not three tact secretaries.
There was not even the contract allowed 7 PO's per district in Community Policing. No 3rd Watch at all and only 2 on 2nd Watch. 5 were launched from each district over a year ago.
1100am start officer had a personal matter and Commander accommodated him, like he would likely do for you.
New unit rep elections will occur after all closings/consolidations etc.are finished.
Either unit rep would be glad to file a grievance for you. See either one and be prepared to put pen to paper and sign the grievance form.
One rep is near retirement so there will be only one soon enough.
Off topic... Word from a friend in I.a.d who knows told me the next cpd scadel is about to come down the pipe.... Apparently several members of cpd are being looked at by the Feds for associating with the outlaw motorcycle club and other motorcycle gangs at social events. Feds were watching the outlaws and on several occasions found members of the American lawmen club hanging out with them. The American lawmen are mostly members of the cpd. The Feds then notified the dept of this and the ball is rolling on it already. Look for many to be stripped in the near future for associating with known felons and gang members...

What happens if your not swiping in
You do not have to connect the Kronos machines to the payroll if you do not want to do this. The supervisors ;usually have access to the computer program that can be used to change punch in and punch out times. If you lose or do not have your ID card which is used to swipe, you must notify a supervisor and he has to make a note of this in the system. And, most places have a camera on the Kronos machine, ether overt or covert. I am seeing a lot of false assumptions by people on this blog. And, the department can designate the system to swipe in only the people that they want to swipe in. That is, they can exempt anyone they want to. Is that a union issue? Maybe if it is within the same rank.

Second, I am not REQUIRED to know motorcycle colors, I am not REQUIRED to know which vest-wearing person is or is not a convicted felon.
The point is, unless I have FIRSTHAND knowledge that someone is a convicted felon (not hearsay, not speculation, not sorta-kinda-maybe-pretty-sure knowledge), the Department cannot find against me or discipline me for it.

It was a story that grew legs and took off about some other motorcycle club that has nothing to do with cpd or coppers in general. Just another rumor that spun out of control and somehow got tied into a cpd bike club. Does it surprise you??? this is cpd.. the rumors are part of the comedy of this job. Its ridiculous how crazy these stories get out of hand. beware of the guy who says..."you heard it here first!"

Kenny of 019 should be blasted but has anyone even seen the guy? This guy's a ghost. Hasn't been to one rollcall to meet the troops or the supervisors. Unbelievable! He did the same thing in the old 019.
time cards are used in many occupations. Nurses at many hospitals use them, most of the employees at county hospital use the swipe machines and some teachers in some districts use them. Generally, supervisors do not have to swipe in or out. Getting caught swiping someone else in or out is a dischargable offense and businesses use hidden cameras to monitor the machines. The next thing you will see is a hand print or iris reader linked to the swipe machine. This is not uncommon.
