Speed Cameras Pass

The rubber stamp City Council approves another unpopular measure. How do these people keep getting reelected?
  • It’s full speed ahead for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s controversial plan to use cameras to catch motorists who speed near schools and parks.

Despite concerns that the plan is more about raising revenue than keeping children safe, the City Council on Wednesday approved the dramatic expansion in Chicago’s Big Brother surveillance network. The vote was 33-14.

The debate turned emotional when Ald. Jim Balcer (11th) recalled that he was run over by a car when he was 8.

“It was a traumatic experience in my life. I still remember it,” Balcer said. “People said buckle up wouldn’t work. They said why give people tickets who won’t buckle up? It has saved lives [and so will speed cameras]. We will get used to it. We will adjust to it. If people don’t want a ticket, obey the law.”

Turning to his colleagues, Balcer said, “If you don’t want the cameras, let me have them. I’ll be glad to put them in to save the lives of children.”

Ah yes, "the children." Anyone care to tally up the number of children hit and killed by cars this year in Chicago? Then compare it to the number of children shot sleeping in their beds, sitting on their front porches or walking through a park near a pick-up basketball game?

Anyone else see a disparity here?

OK, spped cameras to protect the kids. Does this mean they will remove the speed bumps? Why the need for two means of slowing down traffic? Better for fire and ambulances. How about it Rahm? One or the other. Can't have it both ways.

One of the most amusing parts of the agreement between the city and the camera company is that any disputes must be handled by confidential arbitration.

That means the taxpayers never know the nature or resolution of a city contract, even though we're paying for it!

Closed-door transparency?

The same arbitration clause is in the parking meter contract and others.

Don't worry. You have no need to know.

If a child had been hit and killed by a speeding car during this ongoing camera debate, it would have been shouted from the rooftops. Emanuel would probably have them turn the air raid sirens on, just to make sure no one missed the story.

It's a non-issue, and it's ALL about the revenue.

Can't wait til all the Rahmbots start getting those cute little invoices in the mail every few days.

well, now, in order to avoid getting a ticket, the drive-by cretins will be driving by at a slower speed, and this may help them hit who they're, supposedly, really aiming at.

For me, living near a school or park would be a negative factor anyway -- I have to pay for them, but by this time I see them not as "havens of education" or "fields of healthy recreation," but as mere s__t magnets and sources of noise, dirt, and danger.

Now there are going to be blinding photoflashes going off at odd intervals as cars jerk and scrape over weird bumps in the street.

They are turning this city into a living hell with a big smiley face painted on the front.

Anything for a buck.

The best part of the joke is that it's not like this Mayor plans to be here for very long.

Maybe a__hole buddy Bloomberg will hire Emanuel away to work in Bloomie's huge new "financial hub" in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Yeah, Emanuel is "giving the aldermen another week to understand" his $7.3 billion "infrastructure" scam.

That means he doesn't have the votes to get it by.

You can just see the little bastard running around applying thumbscrews and boiling oil, getting out those telephoto pictures of illicit sex, city credit card receipts for drinking binges -- whatever dirt he has on some of the dirtiest people around.

Can you hear the piercing shrieks echoing down the hallways, the pleading for mercy?

$7.3 billion?

Believe me, he'll get it through.

No. It's not a quasi-criminal offense as a traffic ticket is.

It's a civil violation. If you contest it you appear before an "Administrative Law Judge", someone who's not a judge at all, just an apparatchik whose interest is to protect his own job (find against you).

Riis Park has Narragansett on west side, Fullerton on south side. What, everyone going to go 19 MPH here?

"We will be paying Redflex for years to come after the Racoon is gone and history."

Oh, these folks'll keep bumping into each other for drinks -- just not where you and I can see.

I love transparency.

one of the first things nazis did... Took the wealth of any and all. They still lost. Rahm wants money but can't figure out nor would he dare cutting hand out program. Know how much ghetto residential day cares charge per kid? Guess who pays for that? Mommy isn't married but has a good job and a porsche suv. She also has a link card and section 8 housing. Quinn and rahm want chaos and disorder. Unfortunately, they will prevail.

In a city 650 million in debt We need every dollar we can get! Rather than complain, slow down, how do you fight something that might save one child's life. What we should have insisted on was the city use the revenue to fund the pension.

4/19/2012 09:30:00 PM

Bull. "Might save one child's life"? Yes, it might also deflect a Jedi light saber attack, too. But, it's rather unlikely.

But, it will cost millions of dollars to install and it will cost hundreds of millions in fines, punishing the people who are out there working for a living, trying to tread water financially in these difficult times.

@ 4/19/2012 04:38:00 PM and the rest of you PO's.

IF the police department had enough Officers trained to use Radar and Laser...and had enough of the hand held or tripod / squad mounted Speed guns, And the PO's then Actually Did Traffic Stops for speeding in this damn city....

We wouldn't be stuck with these things now. And we wouldn't have gotten stuck with the RLC's.

But hey...the Morale problem is more important than doing the Job.

Time to suggest to the Dept Director of Revenue that We start doing more of the ANOV's as well.

well, you can't get from point 'A' to point 'B' any faster than:

1. traffic signals, (ie., lights and stop signs)

2. other vehicles

3. objects within the chosen path, other than other vehicles, (ie. speed bumps, pot holes, pedestrians, construction, etc.)

will allow.

with gas approaching 5 bucks a gallon, unless you enjoy having your vehicle's brakes replaced on a yearly basis, what the fuck is the point in repeatedly accelerating for a block or so, only to have to come to a complete stop?

and, yes, i'm the asshole pacing my progress from point 'A' to point 'B', so as to not waste my hard earned dollars on burning up the over priced gas in my tank, just so i can 'feel' like i'm getting somewhere in a hurry, even though i'm not.

and, no, my nickname isn't tommy the turtle.

O'Connor voted yes and now the residents of the 41st ward, city employes will pay a heavy price. Imagine a speed camera on nagle Ave within 1/8 of a mile from Taft HS? That street alone will bring in millions of dollars a year.

[]

Or any side street within 1/2 mile around Taft for that matter. The asshole students coming and going from Taft need to slow down

If these are a certain RADAR camera made by the Chinese, they will not accept a tuning fork calibration.

Internal only.

Seems to go against standards.
