Five people were wounded as they were apparently waiting for a CTA bus this afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side.
The shooting happened in the 7900 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, said Police News Affairs Officer [...].
Preliminary reports stated the victims were standing at the corner when someone approached on foot and opened fire, striking them. The gunman then fled in a minivan, said Police News Affairs [...].

I've listened to the Media, our friend John Kass included, pontificate about what they think they know. Of course, not having any experience in police work, they missed a few things.
The Media keeps saying the police dropped her off in a bad neighborhood. This is wrong. She was bonded out IN a police facility, and like the bustouts that practically live there, she could have stayed in the safe confines as long as she cared to, as long as it took her parents to call an attorney to come and get her taken care of. They didn't. She wandered out into the neighborhood. I can't imagine why.
The Media keeps saying she WAS bi-polar. The police know that how? Is there a tattoo on her arm that says bi-polar? Just because someone that says they are a relative on the phone says she is mentally unstable, that doesn't give us cause to detain her. If we did that every time we thought someone was unstable, we'd do it to half the people we come into contact with.
Could things have gone better. Sure. But that would take someone doing above and beyond what they are ALLOWED to do. Above and beyond happens all the time. It gets good intentioned coppers jammed up all the time, too.
Is this a tragedy? Sure is, but the parents, the ones ultimately responsible for THEIR daughter, put her on the plane. The taxpayers of the City of Chicago shouldn't be on the hook for her now.

Second did you even listen to the radio 478s came on the air and said et's are not coming out and that they were recovering the firearm and which point 41s came on the air and told them not to. And if the beat officer were so good how did they miss the shell casing on he scene? Also how do you on view shoots fired give chase give and put out a discription of the vehicle that was the wrong color and the discription of the three offenders is one male black wearing all black? Really? Get a clue

How many hours, from the time she arrived in police custody, did it take her parents to arrive in Chicago?
0 - Zero - Zilch
They only showed up after she was pushed or fell or jumped out of the R.T. building.
A flight from California to Chicago is about 4.5 hours.
They could have been here long before she was released from custody.
They could have contacted an attorney in Chicago to ensure that she was safe.

There should probably be a thread for those who want to debate the lawsuit against CPD 002 district personnel regarding the woman raped and thrown out of a window.
If I remember correctly, there were some officers that spoke to the family personally and they were concerned about her mental health as well. If that doesn't end the debate about what should have been done with her then I don't think anything would convince you, but it will be more than enough to convince a jury. Yes we process mentally ill people all the time, but the difference is whether or not they are having an episode or just high or drunk. If its going on for more than 24hrs, common sense tells you its an episode. I guarantee you even the predators in the neighborhood realized that something was off about that woman and thats why they lured her. Predators always go after the weakest of the herd.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think its all the fault of the city. I think they are one of four parties to blame.
1) the daughter for refusing to live within some safety limits given her condition, i.e. not being a stripper, travelling to cities unaccompanied and not receiving proper health care on her own.
2) the parents for not getting on a plane the second they were called and headed to Chicago, afew hundred dollars in airfare would have been well worth the health of their daughter
3) the city for failing to act upon the observations of some of the officers and taking the extra time and effort to get her looked at a hospital
4) most of all, the piece of shit and his ilk that preyed on her and victimized her

Regarding the 100 million dollar girl. Her parents were calling from California. Every half hour to 002 Phonerecords show it. The female lockup keeper in 002 walked her out of the station and left her on 51st to be violated. The parents had people waiting for a call to pick her up but they basically threw her out the door.

If the parents were waiting for a call as to when she would be released; they should have had someone waiting at the station - if they were so concerned.

These "people" are animals in every sense of the word except they don't take care of their young. The ONLY bad thing to happen at that bus stop that evening is that there were survivors. Arrestees are bonded at the desk Ms. Civilian, not walked out of the lockup onto the street.
If the parents knew she was mentally ill, why did they allow her on a plane to "dance" in Chicago? They couldn't stop her, that's why. She is a citizen, allowed to go where she wants..including walking out the door of a secure police facility, which she CHOSE to do.
If the parents were really concerned they could have been there waiting for her to bond out. THEY chose not to. Our lives are about choices. Again, it's tragic, but the tax payers in Chicago should not have to pay for that families choices.

when things like this happen, it is becoming normal. absentee fathers should be forced to attend the court appearance for the offender. if hes behind in child support, make him pay or lock him up. check his financial status,if hes holding he can pay for his childs lawyer. why should the public pay for his irresponsibilty.this conduct is what dogs do. time for the players to man up. why should we pay for his low life attitude.

The parents were in California. Would it have been so hard to keep her at the desk? Take her to a hospital? Fucking HELP her? No. In the all too typical lazy house cat/desk crew/lock up way, the attitude was lets get rid of the problem so we can move on to something else. Like reading the paper, watching TV or talking on the phone. Not all desk crews and lockups are like this but I defy anyone who has to deal with overly entitled admin people to tell me I'm wrong. Desk crews treating citizens and coppers alike like shit. Desk Sgt nowhere to be found to approve an inventory or an arrest report. WC or XO or whatever you want to call them working out or surfing the internet. Lock up keepers treating working coppers like they are the enemy.
When trying to defend the actions of anyone involved in this mess, spend a few minutes thinking about the girl and what she went through in the minutes before hitting the ground.
I know that the dept has big problems. But I have 27 years on now and the one thing we were taught was to try to keep the wolves away from the sheep. In this case we, as the judge said, put her in the lions den. Shameful.
