Citywide Two-Day Drill - Canceled?

What manner of bullshit is this?
  • Why was the "large scale NATO exercises" for 25 and 26 April abruptly cancelled the night before at 2100 hrs?

This "exercise" was so important that they even moved the CompStat meeting from Thursday to Friday so all the exempts could go and watch and maybe even learn something about what is coming down the pike.

Then the Blackberries started going off and everything was canceled for reason or reasons unknown. But hey, what could possibly go wrong? It all looks great on paper. As long as we stick with the plan, everything will be fine, right? Nothing like going into battle without any sort of preparations whatsoever to see if there are any possible hitches in the organization.

Hey Rahm? McJersey is blowing it and so is everyone else associated with him. Even your handpicked International Relations mopes are so far behind the curve it isn't funny. These goofs are going to cost you your national ambitions. Seriously.

Two coppers risked their lives tonight to save a guy who was using a train to commit suicide. Happened in 017. Officers saw the man on the tracks and could see the train coming. They exited their squad and yanked the guy to safety. Congrats officers and stay safe.

Rahm doesn't give a shit about our city. He has his own agenda and that is all he cares about. He knows the shit will hit the fan in a huge way and has helped paint the target on Chicago. He merely thinks that he will be considered a hero afterwards when he has to rebuild the city after the post NATO destruction. He is ohhhhhh so wrong and too arrogant to see the writing on the wall. A little off topic. Did anyone notice that 002nd District Commander Fred Waller is getting 3 picks in the upcoming Lieutenants merit selection process. For those of you that are new and confused by this allow me to help you. The math is simple; 2+1=3. Ex-Superintendent Terry Hillard gets two picks and Commander Waller will receive one. Hillard has been very busy with the NATO summit. He is definitely still a mover and shaker in the department. Hopefully, Wallers right hand man Sgt. BB will somehow slide in there. We all know he deserves it. Yeah right. Let the games begin.

If this NATO conference comes off bad, that might be a good thing to stop Rahm's ambitions.

Every one of the poor excuses for CPD leaders should be summarily reduced to what they should have been before their merit promotions - a patrolman.

CPD won't get a "do over" for the NATO conference, but you could get a "start over".

Start over by getting rid of the people that cannot lead.

*** OFF TOPIC ***

Has anyone experienced problems trying to register for the Life insurance with Prudential. For the past two days I can only get to the screen where it talks about my health and then it does not allow me to advance. I have tried their live chat function and each time there is nobody available. Tried the phone, on hold for 30 minutes and I had to leave.

I'm trying to up the insurance to the max but I am not sure if this is why it is happening, kinda like they don't want me to have a 800K policy...? Maybe Prudential knows something more about G8 then I do?? Of course they do, I still don't even know my duties or my hours.

If anyone has any suggestions, ideas or guidance it will be appreciated.

CPD will either have you or not have you attend court, how can that be a problem Also maybe it would be smart just to assume that days off will be cancelled and you will be working 12 hr days, so dont make any drs, appts or other appts you may have to cancel. If none of the things you are worrying about happens , whats the worse case scenario, you will have alot of free time to spend with your kids and if it does happen you will have been prepared
June 1st will be here and all that worrying will be over and you will be fine. Quit making a big deal over nothing Relax

I had the same problem while using a small laptop. To 0731,

so you mean to tell me that it was postponed because of weather OK. So does that mean if the weather turns bad during this event then it's going to be postponed. According to Tobias we are well trained, 1st, training day half on videos then how to do formations with a bunch of old timers that are completely out of shape, females with long as nails, and worried about not messing up their hair with the helmets. 2nd training day, again half a day watching videos and second part, showing us how to handcuff someone with flex cuffs, again a bunch of useless out of shape po's. And during class some older fat, out of shape females started to stretch because they sat too long on their fat ass. Now these are the same people that are going to be in the front line with the soft look, so in a sense we are definitely fucked. So hopefully the weather turns bad and it's postponed. So Tobias quick fact for you, go to the training for 2nd watch personnel and you'll see that some of these po's can't stand for an hour let alone 12.. But we are well trained..

What you witnessed was the kind of thing we do every day, but usually no one sees it. Thanks for noticing, commenting and marking the heroic actions of the two po's.

And, if you would be kind enough to take the time to phone or walk into the station and tell the boss what you saw, maybe they'll actually get some recognition (like a lifesaving award) from the Department. It's a nice thing to have in your personnel jacket and maybe on your family room wall.

And before anybody flames me for being sappy, or accuses me of being one of the two po's, I'm a sergeant who just tries to make sure my people get the recognition they deserve when they do something above and beyond.

No. Maybe. Yes. In your district until the situation downtown deteriorates beyond police control. No. Yes, you're still a grown-up, presumably. Yes, it is a shame. Yes. Agreed.

Everyone is preoccupied over the predictable tantrums of the spoiled-brat suburbanites who, for reasons even they don't fully understand, don't like NATO. But NATO is at war with Jihadis in Afghanistan. And McCarthy has boasted that CPD, unlike the big bad NYPD, does not monitor the population likely to shelter/spawn Jihadis. What could go wrong? Hope someone is planning for the posssibility of a serious terror atempt during the next few weeks.

Just a slight 3 1/2-pound pull away from the next world. Whoa, Nellie. >shudder<

What the hell am I doing? >puke<

I don't like it one bit down in that basement -- I been there -- but it's true. Got to watch where that everything-is-rotten, everyone-is-dirty attitude can lead you. When you see bad all day long, it gets hard to remember all the good.

God bless all here. Stay safe.

Oh, yeah. "Great job" to the two officers who saved that man from the train -- gave him another day to think about things. It's not like those trains can stop easily...

Bad place to have to run; rocks, wires, debris, all kinds of stuff to trip over.

Old RR safety rule; never step ON a rail, always step OVER.

The top of that rail is slightly rounded, often polished and shiny, and can be wet, greasy, slippery. It has happened that a guy slips on one rail, falls and hits his head on the other rail, and is laying there unconscious when a train comes...

Watch out for your pants cuffs getting caught. RR guys use like a Velcro or elastic band on theirs, like when you ride a bike. Police don't have that but be aware.

Watch out for foot entrapment; stay away from the track switches. These are sometimes thrown by remote control, under power, and can crush your foot. Also watch the "flangeways," the gaps between rail and pavement like at grade crossings. Plenty of kids, etc. got their sneaker jammed in there sideways. Has happened with the bells going -- cut laces, grab kid, get away.

If you find yourself standing between two moving trains and start to get dizzy, SIT DOWN on the ground until they pass so you don't stagger into one. Experienced guys who work in the yards know this trick.

Beware crap hanging off moving trains -- loose steel banding, a 2-by-4 sticking out from a "shifted load," a boxcar door flapping in the breeze, going to come off.

Watch out for CLEARANCE on RR bridges, overpasses, etc. Sometimes there is no room for a man and a train at the same time. Some places have "refuges," little places set back in the concrete wall for you to duck into, but don't count on it. Some long RR bridges have little platforms set out from the bridge -- these may be missing planks, have loose railings, etc. Fun. Always be sure you see a way out if something comes.

If caught on "L"/subway tracks at station, roll under edge of passenger platform and stretch out flat. Subway tunnels have those "refuges" in the walls too, but again don't count on getting to one, they do 60 MPH down there sometimes. There is also that third rail...

Overall, "expect movement on any track, at any time, in any direction." Sometimes a string of cars rolling at you makes NO SOUND at all. The wind can also blow the sound of a train back away from you.

RR "STOP" signal is a flag, light, anything swung straight from side to side, horizontally (parallel to the ground.) Of course, only helps if engine crew can see you; emergency only, to warn them of a hazard ahead, etc. There are no more cabooses at the rear of a train to signal to; they used to be able to stop it from there but that's gone now.

Just things to keep in mind, lots of RR tracks around. A foot chase going up the tracks or something, as always call squad and they will make RR aware of situation.

...and watch out for the pack of "rib dogs" foraging in the weeds up there. Bad place to get caught.

Rrrrrr.

Stay safe.

Is that the one with the big eagle on the front and the sharp metal spike on top? >grin<

Now there is something for the Department to think about.

The spike could at least be used to hold and organize to/froms...nothing electronic to fail.

Sir, I am the poster. I am not a cop, but a citizen. However, apparently you are a cop and a perfect example of why some people think cops are unmitigated assholes.

I don't even know the officers (one male, one female). I saw it from down the street and was shocked beyond belief. These officer were seconds from getting killed. I thought if I wrote something on the police blog I'd read about, someone might actually congratulate them. But instead, you're attacking them personally.

You should be ashamed of yourself and apologize to those officers. But instead you'll probably just write another post that reinforces what an unhappy asshole you are.

4/26/2012 04:38:00 PM

Well, I AM a cop and I apologize for the jerk who responded to you.

Thank you, Sgt. If it's helpful, the number on the top of their police SUV was 1752. It happened in the early evening.

To the anonymous citizen poster who blogged about the officers on 1752 on the tracks saving the attempt suicide,...if I may to chime in.

Thank you for taking the time to post and recognize both officers. If you would have the time to do so, write a letter to the Office of the Superintendent at 3510 S. Michigan or to the Commanding Officer of the 17th District. A copy of it will go into their personnel file, and these positive comments from citizen encounters are always appreciated.

I too am sorry for the wisecracker. It is not all of us. We're just trying to do our job day to day.

Thank you again for writing about these two officers. Thanks for caring.

Respectfully,

Their boss

Anonymous Citizen here. Thanks for the information. I'm happy that the officers work for a boss that wants to do right by them.

I will send a letter as I also want these officers to get due credit for their heroism. It was really unbelievable how they acted without any regard for their own well being.

I hope the young man's family has stepped forward to thank the officers. It would be too bad if possible embarssment over the suicide attempt prevented them from doing so. It certainly seems people are all too ready to blame the police when their relatives are injured (or killed) when officers are simply trying to enforce the law.

Now that I've found this blog, I'm even more well-informed about what officers go through each day and how residents need to be more supportive...well except for that jerk who was so rude to me. :-)

Grateful Citizen
