New Chase Policy?
Things are loosening up?
Four people were arrested after a 35-mile police chase that started in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side and ended in Merrillville, Ind., police said.
Shortly after midnight, officers attemped to pull over a Chevrolet Trailblazer that ran a stop sign at 59th and Sangamon streets, police said. The officers pursued the vehicle onto the Dan Ryan and Bishop Ford expressways and I-65 in Indiana, police said.
The chase ended at 61st Street in Merrillville, where four suspects were taken into custody, police said.
A police helicopter and the Indiana State Police also were involved in the pursuit, which lasted about 25 minutes, police said.

WOW, WOW, WOW!
I ain't coming to your 30th pending party for sure!
It amazes me that with all the "top of the line" technology CPD is supposed to have that you no longer have the means of getting on ISPERN and calling your own chase......not necessarily the lead car (keep them on the zone), but one of the second cars or even better, the helicopter......
And seeing as how we DO border Indiana (thus having the potential to chase across the state line) the helicopter SHOULD include a GPS map of at least NW Indiana.....(listen to the link)
Listen to the chase here.....

35 mile chase? Helicopter?
How much is that gonna cost us? Oh never mind. We'll just take the money out of the pensions.
OT: Why Trayvon’s killer should be acquitted
It is worth noting that Florida’s violent crime rate, which fell 12 percent in the five years before the “stand your ground” law was enacted, fell 23 percent in the five years afterward. Since 1987, when Florida adopted a
nondiscretionary carry permit law that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence blames for “year after year of carnage,” the state’s violent crime rate has been cut nearly in half.

A big kudos to the officers involved and a special kudos the bosses who let this go on. Chases are dangerous with the potential for tragedy, but we can not allow every chase to be called off. We have to maintain and show face...maybe not for traffic or dope, but we need to be the police when the time comes for serious matters.
I believe this was due to the officers hearing at roll call info regarding these mutts. When they called it in the Sgt.said to terminate but the officer conveyed what he heard at roll call. Great job by the officers. You are appreciated.
One of the best chases I've seen and heard so far on the job.........good job bosses letting it go.....
It will last until the first crash costing the city money.
When I heard the vehicle was stolen with the keys in it from a challenged neighborhood I immediately leaned toward a 'rock-for-ride' type of incident. Why?...and I mean..... .Why.. would you chase anything that isn't shooting at you? Officers it's all bullshit unless they're trying to hurt you. Remember, you work in Cook County....ain't nobody backing you up!
I don't care if a fucking deputy chief said continue the chase. When it comes down to it, the driver of the lead car is responsible. Unless they KNEW this shitbag was responsible for seriously hurting or killing a contributing member of society, they are fucking retarded for chasing. Now, I am going off the ramblings of a semi well respected blogger for the "facts" (love you scc). The final charges may very well have been murder or agg batt and the victim of said crimes may have been a decent and contributing member of society. I'm gonna give the coppers involved the benefit of the doubt. My point is, if a single thing had gone wrong, city hall, 35th st, ipra, iad, and every other gold star that could put his name on it would've hung those blue shirts out to dry. We walk a fine line everyday we work (the CPD). We struggle with what our heads and our hearts say we should do with almost every situation we encounter. There are four entities we need concern ourselves (CPD) in the following order of precedence. Our family. Ourselves. Other Police. Innocent and decent civilians. Again, I give the officers the benefit of the doubt with respect to the above listed situation. However, there is no better "balance test" for 99% of the job than the entities I listed and their order of importance. Stay safe my bothers and sisters. Always keep in mind what's important. Pookie's killer being brought to justice or dying at an old age with a loving family surrounding you?
Poor five year wonders.

the helicopter is shared with the county. It has all cpd channels, ISPERN, county channels and suburban departments. Do your homework before you post stupid stuff... Also, at least one car in each district that borders a suburb(4,5,22,8,10,15,25,16,17,24) have one car with a radio in the glovebox which has ispern and bordering suburbs channel... bet you didnt know that either???
I just want to know?
How many Police Officers will be thrown under the bus by these asshole bosses in the next few weeks and take suspensions!
You know that is coming!
stupid move!cant chase for a slolen car!once u lose radio contact terminate!TIME WILL B TAKEN HERE FOR SURE!sgt gave term order once, but was ignored!
These SGT's kill me! who is 720R and why did he keep jumping up on the air? "720R show me going." You're already notified, stay off the air.
This is the same shit that happened in 004 when the tact guy from 006 accidentally shot himself. It was an F/2 SGT constantly jumping on the air.
Either call it off or stay off the god damn air. You're not helping!!
From someone that was part of the chase, good job by all 007 1st watch guys and gals Zone6 dispatchers you were the best as always. Big shout out to all suburban units and the Indiana State police for ALL the help.
If they haven't hurt a copper or a truly innocent victim, there is absolutely no need to pursue them. Especially not for 35 fucking miles.
Highway or not, the potential exists to get people hurt or killed over some typical ghetto bullshit. If the helicopter is available to follow safely from overhead, cool. Otherwise they can drive off and continue on their way until the gas tank is empty.
This ain't the movies, kiddies. People dont dive out of the way of fleeing vehicles and then spring to their feet to cheer on the convoy of police cars chasing the bad guys.
Trust me when I say that the risks greatly outweigh ANY possible reward...unless you consider being confined to a wheelchair, walking with a limp, or having chronic back pain for the rest of your life a reward for grabbing dude for a stickup of the ghetto dopeman.
There is no worse feeling than fading in and out of consciousness with no feeling in your legs while the fire department cuts you and your partner out of the squad car wrapped around an old school city light pole while the 2 offenders that "tied up the store employees and pistol whipped them durIng the robbery" were actually 2 juveniles that did nothing more than shoplift some Fubu jackets before fleeing in that stolen car.
I offer up Densey Cole as the most recent example of why folks need to think twice before putting themselves at risk for shit that doesn't really mean squat in the grand scheme of things. And to know Denseys problems got compounded by a savage after the crash was over is just sickening to process.
Signed: Alive But In Constant Pain & Walk Like A Caveman
The bosses are doing better. Yes, they are preaching all this new stuff coming down from McCarthy, but this chase proves they do want us to be more proactive. They let an earlier chase go on in Englewood 3rd watch with a stolen motorcycle which ended successfully as well. All bosses in 007 were around for that one on 3rd watch too. Good job officers.
Why.. would you chase anything that isn't shooting at you? Officers it's all bullshit unless they're trying to hurt you. Remember, you work in Cook County....ain't nobody backing you up
Sadly, until they're sued and possibly unemployed, some will never learn. If the fucker aint gotta gun, if he didn't try to hurt a PO or myself, I aint chasin nobody for shit! It just aint worth it.
Squad slow it down! In custody let me get a # for an 1811.
This is the pure definition of stupidity. You know you can't chase someone for a traffic violation. On top of that if someone got into a really bad car accident as a result of the chase the police officers involved would be responsible. Use your fucking head.

Be careful guys know your general orders. Even if a sergeant keeps the chase going you have to use your safety discretion. Everything is on camera .. The department will not back you in my opinion.
Team effort was great ... Operation was spearheaded by the helicopter.
The chopper does have ISPERN and GPS.
The guy in the chopper was ready for muts to bail so he could pick them up with heat camera. Luckily muts gave up.
All in all it was done safely.
Captain Bubblehead notified the sargeants working that night that they will be getting CR's for not terminating the chase. He also said downtown is pissed that they let it go and now they're pulling up the GPS so they can jam up everyone involved.
Gotta love the rewards you get for doing good work on this department.
What about the movie "Porkys" Once you reach your jurisdiction line you have to stop. By the way I hope they paid the toll.
I'm glad you caught them and no officers were hurt, but I tend to agree with 02:49. Even agg psmv is going to get pleaded down in this horseshit county and these mutts will get minimal jail time. If you're after someone who has either tried to hurt or actually hurt one of us, by all means chase them to the ends of the earth. Traffic violations or IVC felonies.....It just doesn't seem to be worth the risks to our safety or liability if one of the would be rocket scientists kill themselves or some innocent person in a crash. Again, good job officers....stay safe!
No probable cause, case dismissed or... plea to CTTV, time served +2 years probation, have a nice day. Thousands of tax dollars wasted. Good job to the officers though. Too bad the system is so fucked up their good work doesn't mean shit. Had these dirt bags crashed into and killed someone, these officers would be getting their pants sued off. It was worth the adrenaline rush and a war story to add to their arsenal for all those nights out at the watering hole though wasn't it!
On a similar note I would like to extend the biggest heart felt thanks to everyone who helped on the chase in 011 the other day. Seeing everyone from all over the place there to help us was an amazing sight. I really cannot thank you all enough!!!!!!
This will be going to traffic court for the next three years.
Can you pay the fine today?
Uhhhhh No.
Ok, come back next month.
And the end result probably was criminal trespass to vehicle class A and when the victim doesn't show up it will be nolle pros.
waste of time and possibly your career. fuck these people
told the Sgt they heard it in Roll Call??
refused to terminate??
typical 007 stupidity from 2 yr wonders!!!!

Well, Mr Fuckin know it all....why didn't the helicopter get on ISPERN and make the notifications themselves....listen to the audio linked below (again),the helicopter only talks with the zone....you do not hear anything on ISPERN (ILEEN in IN) until an Lake County IN Sherriff unit comes on the air..right around 15:30 or so.....it took FIFTEEN MINUTES to get a flash onto ISPERN and get help rolling your way ahead of you, and it took an copper from IN to do it....
That ONE car in 004 or 005 (in this particular case) with the ISPERN/suburban frequency does a whole lot of good if tied up on ghetto bullshit......
EACH dispatch terminal at the OEMC should have the means to broadcast onto ISPERN, if that doesn't happen, then the chopper should, and finally the second or third chase car if neither of those two do it......
Use the tools you do have to your advantage......didn't happen in this case, did it?
Don't believe me...listen to the tape...it doesn't lie
http://www.justin.tv/radioman911/b/316137166
Having been in some scary pursuits in my time, I have to agree with those that say that this one should have been terminated. Unless the officers saw the offenders committing a forcible felony, then it's not worth it. Once your bad guy runs into a station wagon filled with nuns and kills them all, your life, along with your pension, your career and your families lives will all be flushed down the toilet. Not worth it. As an aside, the CPD dispatchers did an outstanding job. The pathetic thing is hearing the helicopter saying that they didn't have maps for Indiana. WTF!
(4,5,22,8,10,15,25,16,17,24) have one car with a radio in the glovebox which has ispern and bordering suburbs channel... bet you didnt know that either???
4/26/2012 08:19:00 AM
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! When's the last time you worked the street in any of theses districts? Must've been in the 90's because thats the last time we had those. And all saying this chase was just for traffic or psmv, learn the facts then comment.
-signed,
not taking any time for participating so fuck off you house mice know it alls
Wow....some of the comments on here are absolutely amazing. I went to the link posted above and listened to the radio transmissions -ALL OF THEM- This was a great job by the 007 District officers. They did not refuse to terminate. They explained to the supervisor that this was the car given out by the Capt at rollcall as wanted for armed robberies in their district and the Sgt then told them to continue the chase. They explained numerous times that this was not a very high speed chase. When they began to lose comms they called on a cell phone and stayed in touch by phone.
The only thing I could find fault with was the helicopter. They flew overhead, but were unable give any help with location because they couldn't "flip screens" while watching the fleeing vehicle. Later, they couldn't help because they were in Indiana and had no maps for that area. As the ground units lost radio communications, they didn't even offer a radio relay service. Seems to me all they were doing was burning a lot of gas for no reason. Why are they up there if they can't give any assistance?? Eventually, they did get an event number so that made it all good and justified their existance. I suppose that's more important than police work.
What a bunch of second guessing, armchair quarterbacking pussies!
Kudos to the chase cars and having a little fun on the city's dime.
The Sgt. ordered them to terminate the chase and yet the officers continued to do so anyways. Typical three year wonder nonsense. When you engage in a chase, even if they authorize you to continue if something goes wrong they will hold you responsible. Because you can still use your judgement. Unless they hurt the police fuck it. Even if you catch the mutts it will be pleaded down to a misdemeanor or time served. USE YOUR FUCKING HEADS!
You werent there, you don't know shit. Nobody refused shit. Mind you fucking business. If you have nothing good to say don't say anything. It wasn't traffic but I'm sure the rumor mill is already in overdrive. The handful of coopers there were awesome. Typical nonsense from Monday quarterbacks. Everybody has an opinion about something they no idea about. But we shouldn't expect any less. The single biggest enemy of the Chicago police officer is the officer standing a block away. Good job guys.
God bless and be safe.
anyone who involves themselves in a chase that is not in line with general orders is asking for it. I love the aggressiveness of the officers and the job they did... but, from a few bad experiences I have had recently car chases are not worth it anymore. If you or other coppers are getting hurt or shot at then its one thing to chase... I can even see chasing someone for onviewed shots fired or homicide etc.. but for traffic, hot car, theft burglary its not worth it. Your guaranteed at least three to five days if it goes bad. If it goes really bad your gonna ge more. I use to be that it all fell on the shoulders of the Sgt monitoring the pursuit... not anymore. Now the officers, sgts and watch commanders get into it. great job officers but its just not worth it anymore. suspension days do nothing but leave you without money and stop you from retiring on time...instead of 29 and a day youve now got 29 and 5 days. This department is so soft these days they will do anything they can to put the accountability squarly on the officer.
I have been on this job for over 30 yrs and enjoy a good chase, However, And I do mean however, unless this bad guys sot at you, a citizen or bad real bad crime this chase should have been terminated, going down the highways at top speed, chasing dude, who don't give 2 fucks about anything is nonsense, just think when you rear end a truck at 90 mph. there is not much left, and our young police think it;s fun, but it's not fun when they cut you out of that squad car and you can't walk or talk or feed yourself ever again. Stop right there, I know what you are thinking, who is the pussy ass that is writing on this blog, I'm a good Sgt who really really cares about you guys and life is too short to waste. Stay Safe.
Anyone chasing now is a fool looking to get hit with punitive damages.
Fuck doing anything pro-active unless you want to loose the job and house.
We were told the new chase policy in about year 2000. The D/C said, in essence, unless Maggie Daley's legs were sticking out of the trunk of the car, do not chase. (naturally she was still alive then)
I have lived by that police and have not gotten in any chases, haven't killed any one and have not been sued. All is good.
They ran a stop sign? That's it? All that and because of running a stop sign? He would likely beat that anyway. What else, suspended DL, no insurance? Big deal. You would think bin Laden was in that car. No, wait, he is dead, well someone like him, or Dillinger or Billy the Kid.
But running a stop sign? Great.
In the climate our city "leaders" have created for the police I wouldn't chase any one any where. Fuck them and the guy who got away. Not worth your safety or that on innocent bystanders. You can only hope the guy who got away will get caught up some other time. The old days of those Hollywood chases is long gone.
Where are all you asshats getting the traffic thing. FOR THE FINAL TIME, IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH TRAFFIC. And by the way, it was a forcible felony. Numerous ones. So fuck off.

Shut up you fucking stroke. What were the fucking charges again? You want a hand job for your awesomeness? Well then go beatoff because nobody but you and your mom think you are awesome. Bottom line is chasing people for nothing, which is what a stolen car is, is fucking stupid. Congrats on your sweet PSMV pinch you rubber.
Where are all you asshats getting the traffic thing. FOR THE FINAL TIME, IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH TRAFFIC. And by the way, it was a forcible felony. Numerous ones. So fuck off.

Well then why don't you name them fuckhead? List the fucking charges.
Well then why don't you name them fuckhead? List the fucking charges.

I don't wanna argue with you anymore. You're an idiot. You're gonna drag me down to your level and beat me with experience. I surrender.
You win.
