New Chase Policy?

Things are loosening up?
  • Four people were arrested after a 35-mile police chase that started in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side and ended in Merrillville, Ind., police said.

Shortly after midnight, officers attemped to pull over a Chevrolet Trailblazer that ran a stop sign at 59th and Sangamon streets, police said. The officers pursued the vehicle onto the Dan Ryan and Bishop Ford expressways and I-65 in Indiana, police said.

The chase ended at 61st Street in Merrillville, where four suspects were taken into custody, police said.

A police helicopter and the Indiana State Police also were involved in the pursuit, which lasted about 25 minutes, police said.

Be careful boys and girls.

It amazes me that with all the "top of the line" technology CPD is supposed to have that you no longer have the means of getting on ISPERN and calling your own chase......not necessarily the lead car (keep them on the zone), but one of the second cars or even better, the helicopter......

And seeing as how we DO border Indiana (thus having the potential to chase across the state line) the helicopter SHOULD include a GPS map of at least NW Indiana.....(listen to the link)

Listen to the chase here.....

OT: Why Trayvon’s killer should be acquitted

It is worth noting that Florida’s violent crime rate, which fell 12 percent in the five years before the “stand your ground” law was enacted, fell 23 percent in the five years afterward. Since 1987, when Florida adopted a
nondiscretionary carry permit law that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence blames for “year after year of carnage,” the state’s violent crime rate has been cut nearly in half.

A big kudos to the officers involved and a special kudos the bosses who let this go on. Chases are dangerous with the potential for tragedy, but we can not allow every chase to be called off. We have to maintain and show face...maybe not for traffic or dope, but we need to be the police when the time comes for serious matters.

I believe this was due to the officers hearing at roll call info regarding these mutts. When they called it in the Sgt.said to terminate but the officer conveyed what he heard at roll call. Great job by the officers. You are appreciated.

Why?...and I mean..... .Why.. would you chase anything that isn't shooting at you? Officers it's all bullshit unless they're trying to hurt you. Remember, you work in Cook County....ain't nobody backing you up!

I don't care if a fucking deputy chief said continue the chase. When it comes down to it, the driver of the lead car is responsible. Unless they KNEW this shitbag was responsible for seriously hurting or killing a contributing member of society, they are fucking retarded for chasing. Now, I am going off the ramblings of a semi well respected blogger for the "facts" (love you scc). The final charges may very well have been murder or agg batt and the victim of said crimes may have been a decent and contributing member of society. I'm gonna give the coppers involved the benefit of the doubt. My point is, if a single thing had gone wrong, city hall, 35th st, ipra, iad, and every other gold star that could put his name on it would've hung those blue shirts out to dry. We walk a fine line everyday we work (the CPD). We struggle with what our heads and our hearts say we should do with almost every situation we encounter. There are four entities we need concern ourselves (CPD) in the following order of precedence. Our family. Ourselves. Other Police. Innocent and decent civilians. Again, I give the officers the benefit of the doubt with respect to the above listed situation. However, there is no better "balance test" for 99% of the job than the entities I listed and their order of importance. Stay safe my bothers and sisters. Always keep in mind what's important. Pookie's killer being brought to justice or dying at an old age with a loving family surrounding you?

the helicopter is shared with the county. It has all cpd channels, ISPERN, county channels and suburban departments. Do your homework before you post stupid stuff... Also, at least one car in each district that borders a suburb(4,5,22,8,10,15,25,16,17,24) have one car with a radio in the glovebox which has ispern and bordering suburbs channel... bet you didnt know that either???

If they haven't hurt a copper or a truly innocent victim, there is absolutely no need to pursue them. Especially not for 35 fucking miles.

Highway or not, the potential exists to get people hurt or killed over some typical ghetto bullshit. If the helicopter is available to follow safely from overhead, cool. Otherwise they can drive off and continue on their way until the gas tank is empty.

This ain't the movies, kiddies. People dont dive out of the way of fleeing vehicles and then spring to their feet to cheer on the convoy of police cars chasing the bad guys.

Trust me when I say that the risks greatly outweigh ANY possible reward...unless you consider being confined to a wheelchair, walking with a limp, or having chronic back pain for the rest of your life a reward for grabbing dude for a stickup of the ghetto dopeman.

There is no worse feeling than fading in and out of consciousness with no feeling in your legs while the fire department cuts you and your partner out of the squad car wrapped around an old school city light pole while the 2 offenders that "tied up the store employees and pistol whipped them durIng the robbery" were actually 2 juveniles that did nothing more than shoplift some Fubu jackets before fleeing in that stolen car.

I offer up Densey Cole as the most recent example of why folks need to think twice before putting themselves at risk for shit that doesn't really mean squat in the grand scheme of things. And to know Denseys problems got compounded by a savage after the crash was over is just sickening to process.

The bosses are doing better. Yes, they are preaching all this new stuff coming down from McCarthy, but this chase proves they do want us to be more proactive. They let an earlier chase go on in Englewood 3rd watch with a stolen motorcycle which ended successfully as well. All bosses in 007 were around for that one on 3rd watch too. Good job officers.

If you're after someone who has either tried to hurt or actually hurt one of us, by all means chase them to the ends of the earth. Traffic violations or IVC felonies.....It just doesn't seem to be worth the risks to our safety or liability if one of the would be rocket scientists kill themselves or some innocent person in a crash. Well, Mr Fuckin know it all....why didn't the helicopter get on ISPERN and make the notifications themselves....listen to the audio linked below (again),the helicopter only talks with the zone....you do not hear anything on ISPERN (ILEEN in IN) until an Lake County IN Sherriff unit comes on the air..right around 15:30 or so.....it took FIFTEEN MINUTES to get a flash onto ISPERN and get help rolling your way ahead of you, and it took an copper from IN to do it....

That ONE car in 004 or 005 (in this particular case) with the ISPERN/suburban frequency does a whole lot of good if tied up on ghetto bullshit......

EACH dispatch terminal at the OEMC should have the means to broadcast onto ISPERN, if that doesn't happen, then the chopper should, and finally the second or third chase car if neither of those two do it......

Use the tools you do have to your advantage......didn't happen in this case, did it?

Having been in some scary pursuits in my time, I have to agree with those that say that this one should have been terminated. Unless the officers saw the offenders committing a forcible felony, then it's not worth it. Once your bad guy runs into a station wagon filled with nuns and kills them all, your life, along with your pension, your career and your families lives will all be flushed down the toilet. Not worth it. As an aside, the CPD dispatchers did an outstanding job. The pathetic thing is hearing the helicopter saying that they didn't have maps for Indiana. WTF!

Wow....some of the comments on here are absolutely amazing. I went to the link posted above and listened to the radio transmissions -ALL OF THEM- This was a great job by the 007 District officers. They did not refuse to terminate. They explained to the supervisor that this was the car given out by the Capt at rollcall as wanted for armed robberies in their district and the Sgt then told them to continue the chase. They explained numerous times that this was not a very high speed chase. When they began to lose comms they called on a cell phone and stayed in touch by phone.

The only thing I could find fault with was the helicopter. They flew overhead, but were unable give any help with location because they couldn't "flip screens" while watching the fleeing vehicle. Later, they couldn't help because they were in Indiana and had no maps for that area. As the ground units lost radio communications, they didn't even offer a radio relay service. Seems to me all they were doing was burning a lot of gas for no reason. Why are they up there if they can't give any assistance?? Eventually, they did get an event number so that made it all good and justified their existance. I suppose that's more important than police work.

When you engage in a chase, even if they authorize you to continue if something goes wrong they will hold you responsible. Because you can still use your judgement. Unless they hurt the police fuck it. Even if you catch the mutts it will be pleaded down to a misdemeanor or time served. USE YOUR FUCKING HEADS!

anyone who involves themselves in a chase that is not in line with general orders is asking for it. I love the aggressiveness of the officers and the job they did... but, from a few bad experiences I have had recently car chases are not worth it anymore. If you or other coppers are getting hurt or shot at then its one thing to chase... I can even see chasing someone for onviewed shots fired or homicide etc.. but for traffic, hot car, theft burglary its not worth it. Your guaranteed at least three to five days if it goes bad. If it goes really bad your gonna ge more. I use to be that it all fell on the shoulders of the Sgt monitoring the pursuit... not anymore. Now the officers, sgts and watch commanders get into it. great job officers but its just not worth it anymore. suspension days do nothing but leave you without money and stop you from retiring on time...instead of 29 and a day youve now got 29 and 5 days. This department is so soft these days they will do anything they can to put the accountability squarly on the officer.
