CFD Contract Fight

Hopefully, the FOP is taking notes, because we're going to get attacked the exact same way and we'll probably be able to blunt some of these attacks by expressing and maintaining solidarity with the firefighters:
  • Chicago firefighters “do a great job,” but they’re not “immune from the change and reform” needed to solve the city’s financial crisis and deliver “greater value” to taxpayers, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday.

Tom Ryan, president of Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2, has characterized the cost-cutting contract concessions the mayor is seeking from firefighters when their contract expires June 30 as “horrendous,” “insulting” and “ridiculous.”

Emanuel refused to respond in kind, nor would he discuss specifics of his proposal to target perks that, one union leader claimed, add $7,000 to the average firefighter’s annual paycheck.

A $7,000 pay cut? We don't know about anyone else, but that would put a severe hurt on our ability to maintain a household in Chicago. Unless we moved to Englewood.

Stop protecting Emmanuel's home. He is a citizen and let him get his own security.

He treats us like shit, so let his family have the same access to police services like any other citizen, including police officers; let them dial 911.

I am not advocating this, or even remotely implying it, (since it is wrong and illegal) but just suppose if the police did strike, who would arrest them for their illegal job action? Usually it would be the white shirts, but I could picture the sgts and lts joining the blue shirts, BECAUSE they will be fisted like the blue shirts. I know not everyone would do strike, but I am guessing that if something like that were to happen - which I do not advocate - I don't even think the white shirts could man enough cars to answer calls.

Again, I am just posing philosophical questions here, because I would NEVER want to see anything like that happen, because I would NEVER want to make it seem like I am in favor of that. Nope, not in the least bit would I want to make it seem anything like that all. ;^)

Why should we honor the contract? Apparently it’s a worthless document. Screw overtime pay, out of grade pay, day off, time due, trade off days. The list goes on. Since tiny dancer feels the contract is not worthy of following, then why should we. Move out of the city, move to a more affordable place. I know many of you will say, sure, like where? I can move to Elgin, send my kids to better schools, nicer roads, shopping centers, more land for the money, bigger house. The list goes on. And that’s just a drop in the bucket. The money I would save on my kid’s education, piece of mind in a better environment would be a major budget improvement. So the commute you might say is a bitch, I say I’ll drive in every day, have my coffee or two, listen to the radio and have some quality me time. It takes me 55 minutes just to drive to work now. No strike clause. What’s that? It’s in the contract? What contract? Since when does the city follow contract rules? Strike, picket, and use the media to express our right to free speech. The list goes on. I’m so tired of this pussy shit. Our union has no balls. Were going to go to arbitration and we are going to get fucked. AGAIN. No confidence in the union for starters. What’s the city going to do? Fire all police officers. Yea right!! You think the gang bangers are having a field day now? Wait till they see police doing nothing. WE are running this show. WE are in charge! WE need to band together and challenge this nonsense. I say nonsense because I can’t find the right word for the horrific bashing and throat cutting our mayor wants to administer. Pension reform is moving along the way they want it. Quinn and Madigan just stuffed over 300 pages of new legislation down out throats over night and we have no recourse. State employees are going to feel the hit first. Increased pension contributions, more years added to the abyss of retirement, Retirees will soon get a letter informing them, hey by the way, your going to have to pay your own health care from here after years of fixed income budgeting. It not going to end. But the politicians will get their fat checks with increases. What’s it going to take people.!!!! DAM IM PISSED. Gotta stop, My fingers hurt snf I need a beer!

When the CFD gets half of the things back that the city knew that they couldn't get away with anyway the rank and file can walk away feeling like they won something when in fact they loss. That's how the game is played.

Watch how it's played out. The city will play victim and blame CFD claiming they're not willing to negotiate. Then, Oh look at all the things we gave you back. Now it's your turn. Give us something.

By reporting the cuts as cutting "perks" was misleading. This is what we have to deal with though. The public has no inclination to research the facts. It's easier for most to be told what things are, even if it's false information. I sure wish the CFD would not have been so quick to adopt the wellness plan. Unless they really felt it a good benefit adjustment, it did nothing to improve their negotiating position. It's a shame that former Mayor Daley sold a multi-million dollar revenue asset (parking meters) that funded the CPD completely. Now that the burden of our budget has been forced onto the city budget, we are forced to pay for the deal. How is the man getting a job at the same firm immediately after retirement not illegal? It surely appears unethical. It's useless to say good luck to any city worker. We are officially the enemy.

The funny thing is that even after they strip our pay, which will result in even less pension funding, the citizens of Chicago will still have increased taxes and fees. It will just be blamed on something else. How is reducing pay and freezing hiring helping the pension funds? Less money going in only starves it further.

Why not strike? What are they going to do, seriously? Fire thousands of Officers? Highly unlikely. And not just us strike, but all city workers.

If we all can come together and fight for our city like we did during NATO. I think we can come together for each other. At least I hope we do.

So you would take a $7,000 pay cut and then move to a suburb of your choice where it would cost you, minimally, an extra $7,000 a year to live.

Then cut Rahm's, the supe's and the fire commissioner's salary by 10%. Then all the alderman by 20% since they have only a part time job and earn about as much as a CPD Lt. THEN I'll think about accepting "reforms".

well
as usual when management talk about making things more Effiecent
they are never talking about them selves
haveing you learn emt so they dont have to hire
then take a paycut after doing more
for less
(management does the opposite
Do less for even more)
cut crews and then wonder why isnt this getting done?
thoug you schedule different than
police
you still have to account for time
police can work a straight 8-12 shift and change
on he other hand once your on a job you have to pretty much stay till it's over
like the guys rowing the boat and dumping rowers
can you tell me how this cost cutting works better again?
till there is only one left

Why should we honor the contract? Apparently it’s a worthless document
=================
Like any contract, if one side is not abiding by the language of the contract and the other side wishes to challenge it, there is an enforcement mechanism available. it may take some time to work itself out, but it is enforceable.

I would point out that the city has a whole bunch of attorneys and other fairly bright people on staff that no doubt have reviewed the actions the city has taken to determine whether the actions taken violate the contract or not.

the history of CPD contracts has shown that they are full of vague sounding clauses that seem quite innocent, but give the city a great deal of unilateral power and autonomy of action.

the city has a long history of using this vague language to its advantage. you would think the average cop would have figured this out by now, but they continue to vote in people to represent them who have no expertise in contract negotiation or labor contract law and who refuse to spend the money to hire actual experts to do so. it is a very one sided battle when one side is totally clueless and just does not or refuses to realize it.

Things for 012 midnights are really bad. I am not in it, thank god! They got a really bad Lt. She is a total moral killer and yet wants officers to bring activity, makes threats openly if they don't. Not only that, she has tried to recruit officers of that watch to be snitches and get crs against other officers. What she needs to remember is that IPRA/IAD can always go back to open an investigation to that traffic crash in which she was taken care of, which would mean "rule 14" violation. Yeah there's a video out there of what took place and maybe IPRA/IAD should finally get a hold of it and go ask that LT some questions. Drag her Sgt friend down with her since both are horrible. Both represent the real meaning of why everyone hates women on this job. You would think that anyone who fought cancer would appreciate a second chance to life and not be this horrible person. I don't know what bothers more the fact that she is a liar or that she wants to mark an officer by making them snitch on other officers of his own watch to get crs for her benefit. She takes pride on how much time she gotten from officers on CRs. I hope that officer calls the FOP since he is being singled out and shouldn't have to be pushed to do anything. I hope he is smart enough not to do the CRs or snitch. Once he is marked she will never let him be in peace. I have no idea why Pontecore doesn't say anything to that crazy Lt. He needs to put her in check. Making threats to POs shouldn't be tolerated, it destroys morale. We got enough enemies out there to have more moles or enemies in the job. The funny reality is that in police work we got no quota and no one in that watch is doing things that merit a cr. Those officers are already in midnights. I guess if she could make them scrub the toilets, she so would.

But the truth is...times have changed...the days of entitlement are over (unless alderman). Your FOP president is hurting you by stating in the news that you made the mayor look good so should get paid. The bottom line is that people get paid to do their jobs. You did yours and should eb paid, but don't let your FOP president sound like a whinny greedy guy who makes it sound like you'll stop doing your job if you don't get what you want. I have family in other states who pay a TON more taxes than I do in Chicago.

Check out the places you'd like to live and figure it out.

Not to mention if residency is lifted, your house in the cop/fireman/city workers will be worth shit, you'll be underwater and be left with no purchasing power.

Unfortunately, the days of company loyalty to the employee are long over in the private sector and this mentality is now spreading into the public sector. They are viewing public employement as a business which exists in a bad economy and must have cutbacks. This is happening all over this coutnry. The city of North las Vegas just announced that either the police take major cuts in pay and beneifts or 40% of them will be layed off. I recall the police layoffs of the late 70's on the east coast. They NYPD layed off substantial numbers. The deals the FOP made with the city in past contracts and appoved by the members now look silly. The city will seek to remove some of these benefits as reforms. Getting out of grade pay, duty availability pay, differential pay and uniform allowances might be a thing of the past, as well as the 1/2 hour for supervisors. Look for the reduction in gold braid pensions. They don't care and the attitude will be if you don't like it quit and find a job in the private sector that pays as well. There are thousands lined up for your jobs. Sad state of affairs.

I'd take a $7000 cut for residency to be lifted.

5/31/2012 12:06:00 AM

You say that, but most better suburbs pay more taxes. Plus they pay monthly water and garbage collection fees in addition to their taxes.

I have family in other states who pay a TON more taxes than I do in Chicago.

Check out the places you'd like to live and figure it out.

Not to mention if residency is lifted, your house in the cop/fireman/city workers will be worth shit, you'll be underwater and be left with no purchasing power.

If residency is lifted, this city will go to hell in a handbasket, just like Detroit.

5/31/2012 12:08:00 PM

First of all, you will be paying way more in property taxes very shortly in this city. They are going to raise everything. You'll be on par with the suburbs within 5-10 years but without the ability to send your kid to a public high school. Second, you already pay water/sewer fees which are increasing as we speak and will continue to increase for the next 4 years. It wouldn't surprise me if the city tacks on a garbage pick up fee as well. They have increased your city sticker cost to what? almost $100.00? In most suburbs $10.00 would be considered high for a vehicle sticker. Third, at this point lifting residency wouldn't affect anyone because everyone's house is already under water. We could just let them foreclose and move away. Who cares if the city turns into Detroit if we don't live here. I come to work every night in the ghetto anyway. At lease I wouldn't have to live in one too. I used to agree with you about residency and not wanting our housing prices to go to shit but they already are so I don't care anymore.

A $7000 pay cut? Sounds like the furlough days that the rest of the City had to take for the previous 3 years...

Doesn't sound the same to me. Furlough days means you were OFF without pay. A $7000 pay cut means your ass is still coming to work but not getting paid as much. See the difference?

Unfortunately, the days of company loyalty to the employee are long over in the private sector and this mentality is now spreading into the public sector. They are viewing public employement as a business which exists in a bad economy and must have cutbacks. This is happening all over this coutnry. The city of North las Vegas just announced that either the police take major cuts in pay and beneifts or 40% of them will be layed off. I recall the police layoffs of the late 70's on the east coast. 5/31/2012 01:39:00 PM

I don't disagree with you but just remember the city will get what it pays for and deserve what it gets. It's one thing to have a disgruntled employee dropping your food on the floor at McDonald's and putting it back in the bag, it's another to have the people keeping order and holding the savages at bay that would destroy this entire city. If the police are so unnecessary and you can lay them off and replace them so easily, then I say cut all of their benefits, fire 3/4ths of them and pay the rest $10.00 per hour. How do you think that would end up working out for the citizens of this city? How many people do you think would be lining up then to take a job as the police? There's a reason that there are thousands of people lined up for our job. That reason is that it's a good job with good pay and benefits. Make it a shitty job, with shitty pay and no benefits and you'll have the same person responding to a burglary at your home that you had serving you your fries for lunch. Rahm better get his head out of his ass before he destroys the CPD and sinks Chicago right along with it. It would have been real interesting to see what would have happened to his house last week if he had 1/4th of the manpower in front of it and they consisted of $10.00 an hour disgruntled burger flippers and security guards. And before anyone jumps all over me for disrespecting those jobs, that is not my intent. I'm simply pointing out that those jobs require much less training and are much less difficult to perform properly and therefore they pay less and have less benefits. I know we have some officers that aren't even qualified to flip burgers but once again that's the city's fault and they're shitty cops. That doesn't reflect upon the department as a whole. Most police are educated, professional people that most of us appreciate responding to help us when we need it. I want the security guard checking receipts at Best Buy, not responding to save my life.

Hey SCC, can you help remind people about the big CPD football game this weekend? The CPD Enforcers will be playing their rivals, the CFD Blaze. Good football is being played on both sides of the ball, and the the CPD is undefeated heading into the game, but more importantly it's for a good cause as proceeds go to various charities (both police related and non-police related). This game we will feature Del Pearson as our honorary captain.

And ten thousand cops in a city of a few million doesn't mean shit. Most wouldn't move anyway and those that did would be a drop in the bucket.

Residency is the biggest slap in the face to city workers. Only a jackass or someone who thinks of themselves over the good of the many would support it.

And guess what anyone who purchased anythihng in the last 10 years is most likely under water so you will be selling your home low and purchasing another home at a low price. You should also factor in what we have to pay in city stickers in this city and other ridiculous taxes.

The non-union workers had to take 2 years of 24 unpaid furloughs and no colas. No one wants to give up money. I would fight hard. But the truth is...times have changed...the days of entitlement are over (unless alderman).. Most people are hurting and out of work, and don;t feel the pity they used to on union workers.

Although i can appreciate the sacrifices you have made as one of the public employees that have had to make sacrifices, i would like to ask you how many of your fellow coworkers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties..? In the 17 years I have been on the job, 27 officers have been killed in the performance of there duties... Please tell me what other profession has made that type of sacrifice other than our Men and Women of the armed forces, and when you add the number of officers hurt, shot or maimed, those numbers skyrocket, so, with all due respect, the sacrifices we make go well beyond 2 weeks loss in pay..

The midnight watch in 012 went to shit when Capt Carroll was moved to the 3rd District. That was over 2 years ago. 1st watch never recovered. We got Capt Hoot who was a one way street and made it clear that he did not want to be on midnights.

Lt. Debbie is a vindictive bitch. Get on her bad side and she will never forget it. Sgt M.A.B. is not to be trusted, she sits in that office with Lt. Debbie and plays games and trashes the other supervisors on all the watches.

Ask anyone who worked for Capt Carroll, it was so enjoyable to come to work. When Capt Carroll was the W/C and Sgt. O'Connor was the desk sergeant, everyone knew everything would be okay, with those two watching our backs.. at 2 in the morning you could come in to use the bathroom or kill a few minutes and Carroll and O'Connor would always take the time to talk to you as a person, as an equal. They did not badger you with how many curfews do you have? but would want to know "how's your family, what are your kids up to?" If you were a CUBS fans, be prepared to take a good natured trashing from them. They dished it out, but they could also take it and laugh with you, not at you.

Now everyone walks on eggshells when Lt. Debbie and Sgt. MAB are working. Don't dare joke with them as they can't take a joke.

012 midnights has been the walking dead for the past 2 yrs.

Hope your enjoying your retirement Capt Carroll...

Senior ambulance driver gets eqiv. to D2a just for being senior guy. I would sure like that driving in the beat car as the senior guy. Paramedic Lt. actually gets the equivelent of our captains pay D5, nice. Fireman get extra 5% pay for each certification they get, many getting 15% extra for three certifications. Nice. I'd like to get extra 15% pay for being, carbine, CIT, and taser qualified. WTF. They even get more than us for fitness test. Crybabys.. I dont feel sorry for you all. These are just some of the scam extra pay that I know of, i'm sure there is a lot more.

I find the comment " you might have the same people who served you fries for lunch now responding to your house for a burglary", right on. Don't we have that now?

Not when I show up to your house. At least you have a coin toss to get a decent officer. Cut all the benefits on this job and you can be assured you're going to get a burger flipper responding to your house.

Were is this guy getting the 25,000 a year in taxes from. There are plenty of areas in the burbs where you are paying less than 10,000 a year in taxes. Will county has amazing schools and there is plenty of places to leave out there and pay less than 12,000 a year in taxes and you are getting more land, more house and you are saving a minimum of 10,000 a year for schools if you have a highschool student.

The $7000 is on top of their regular pay-not cutting from it--read 6/01/2012 03:05:00 PM post it explains alot---why cant we get emt certified, and a 5% bump, when we are first on the scene and rendering aid? Uniform pay when they have the commissary to exchange old ones--boy did I take the wrong test.

Am a Chicago suburban copper.Am tired of constantly having to pull off duty Chicago PD and Cook Co.deputies coles out of the fire when you guys get in trouble on the river boat casino. Chicago and Cook Co. guys are always gettng drunk, then getting into fights, assaults, CDPs, with other patrons. Then when casino security comes, you guys act like your God, being disrespectful, verbally abusive, loud, disorderly. Then security calls us because the Gaming Board state troopers on the boats dont process arrests, we do. Soon as I walk in the security office and hear a loudmouth jerk yelling and insulting everyone, I know he's either from Chicago PD or Cook Co.S.O. Out come the FOP Active Member cards and police id.s. Hey, brother, can you help us out with a little professional courtesy? Sure, no problem. Then I have to kiss the security guards and casino managers behinds to get them not to press charges on you guys.Usually I have to apologize profusely to everyone and then escort you out to the parking lot. Then I have to argue with you not to drive your cars because your plastered. Many times I have given off duty Chicago cops rides to the nearest hotel to sleep it off or to a local restaurant for some food and coffee to help them sober up. Then I visit Chicago and have my own car (with FOP sticker on the windshield) towed outside Rainforest Cafe because I didnt see the 8"x11" "No Parking Tow Zone" sign that is hidden a block away so suburbanites can have their cars towed away by the city to produce revenue. None of Chicagos finest were around when I paid my extortion money at the auto pound to get my car back. I know you guys have a tough city to work in but showing a little common decency would be nice for a change.
