Health advocates and retailers squared off Tuesday on a plan to fight soaring obesity rates by taxing Chicago consumers of soda pop, energy drinks and other sugary beverages anywhere from 15 to 30 cents a container to a penny an ounce.
The City Council’s Health Committee held a marathon hearing on a proposal by its chairman, Ald. George Cardenas (12th), to follow the lead of 33 states that already impose a sales tax on sugary beverages. Six other states slap on excise taxes in addition to a sales tax.
For retailers, fighting the proposal comes down to money. They’re still hurting from the city’s imposition of a Cardenas-championed tax on bottled water.
And has there been an impact study done on the decline in sales of bottled water since Daley (and Cardenas) started taxing it? We're pretty sure we saw one. We also saw the full skids of water being moved at Sam's Club, WalMart, Costco and other "big box" stores just outside of city limits.

There is a 3% tax on soda right now......plus a 9% tax on fountain syrup that distributors are required to pay which of course is pass on to consumers. So if you buy a Coke in the city you are paying 12.5% tax on it.
A couple of years back, I organized shopping excursions from the city out to Indiana. Maybe it's time to start that back up again.

That's a federal program. Never going to happen. And there are more people on it who need it and don't abuse it than those that do. Problem is we never hear about those individuals.
Looks like we have run out of things to tax in this town. Wait....How about the air? We all have to breathe to stay alive. Tax every person living in Chicago and Crook County an....Oxygen Tax. Adults will pay $100 per year. Kids will get a break and pay only $50 a year. If you are a tourist or visitor you will pay a small fee of $15 for every day you breathe our high quality fresh air. I live outside the city limits.. when I go in to visit my family once a week I find I am bring half their shopping list with me.. to be honest I came out where I now live to shop back 8 summers ago.. figured might as well move where I shop.. SCC can you shed some light on why our FOP will be negotiating that SWAT will get D-3 pay? Supposedly it's for being on call and spending money for purchasing equipment. The only items they have to buy is uniforms. They are issued a Glock 17 with an x300 light with 2 holsters, Vest, Helmet, and an M4 with optic and 10 magazines. They work out for an hour and a half every day, don't have to answer calls or make arrests. Half the time they are at Starbucks. I worked with a couple of them in 007 and trust me the one is not smarter then a 5th grader. "Chuckie" been telling people, "I created the breaching program with a shotgun so it's a specialized skill that's why we're getting D3 pay" Hey moron who used to be jail guard, that's not a speciality that requires D3 pay. 99 percent of the big city SWAT teams across the country have explosive breaching also and they don't get Sgt's pay. What the hell is a uniform allowance check for and shift differential for. You are supposed to buy uniforms and be on call. 60 guys at D3 pay. No wonder we will have no pension. They really are the green ghosts.

I don't see it bothering some who have link cards. I wonder if anyone has noticed that some welfare recipients also have Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa IDs in addition to Illinois ID? They are getting checks from multiple states. When asked about it, they say they live in the other state part time. Yeah right. CULLMAN, AL (WBRC) -
Major layoffs have been announced at a plant in Cullman. The Illinois-based company AAR Corp. will close their Cullman plant at the end of June, eliminating 213 jobs, according to company spokesperson Chris Mason.
The workers found out on Tuesday and Wednesay that they would be out of a job by June.

Include Gene Williams - Brain Murphy - Gene Roy in that group. If you liked them or not the fact still remains who is going to replace them? It seems as though the likes of West and Pena are the only ones with an ego large enough to even consider the abuse heaped out on the command staff now adays.

SCC can you shed some light on why our FOP will be negotiating that SWAT will get D-3 pay? Supposedly it's for being on call and spending money for purchasing equipment. The only items they have to buy is uniforms. They are issued a Glock 17 with an x300 light with 2 holsters, Vest, Helmet, and an M4 with optic and 10 magazines. They work out for an hour and a half every day, don't have to answer calls or make arrests. Half the time they are at Starbucks. I worked with a couple of them in 007 and trust me the one is not smarter then a 5th grader. "Chuckie" been telling people, "I created the breaching program with a shotgun so it's a specialized skill that's why we're getting D3 pay" Hey moron who used to be jail guard, that's not a speciality that requires D3 pay. 99 percent of the big city SWAT teams across the country have explosive breaching also and they don't get Sgt's pay. What the hell is a uniform allowance check for and shift differential for. You are supposed to buy uniforms and be on call. 60 guys at D3 pay. No wonder we will have no pension. They really are the green ghosts.

Either way we do have specialty training ,is anyone capable of doing it? I suppose, probably just as capable as anyone to be k9, mounted, marine unit, et or fto. What we want and what we get is 2 different things. Aim high and settle for less.

If all the info is accurate on SWAT regarding their equipment and training then they don't deserve more pay. If you want more money take a promotion exam. It is a volunteer assignment. Last time i checked cannine gets extra pay cause they take care of a dog. I dont think SWAT qualifies for D3 pay. I know one guy on SWAT who used to work in 14. He was scared of his shadow and had like a minute on the job. I was surprised he made it. Then again this is Chicago and its who u blow, I mean who u know.

Easy on bashing SWAT they do a great job especially when they do our warrants. But I do have to agree they don't deserve D2 or D3 pay. It is a volunteer unit. If you don't like the pay then don't try out. Sorry he's right. Last I heard most of the SWAT guys have take home cars and let's be honest. I started with HBT and now SWAT, we were promised d3 pay almost 10 years ago. Shields came to our roll call and he brought it up to us. Maybe it was just to get elected. Bottom line being on SWAT is a speciality.

For your edification, there is a map of the U.S. showing the results of a nationwide survey on what to call soft drinks. Just Google "pop vs. soda page." Cook County is a "pop" zone by a ratio of more than 4 to 1, though Milwaukee and St. Louis are "soda." Overall, soda tends to be an Northeast term.
I grew up on the North Side, so did my parents and grandparents, and it was always pop. Or sometimes soda pop. But never just soda.
And if you need a larger point, how about this: Not to trust the media to understand any situation from a Chicagoan-on-the-ground viewpoint. That's relevant to just about anything.

What an arrogant fuck you are. This is why our pension and our CPD has been destroyed. This type of elite mindset that we deserve more for doing less. For a guy who is not on SWAT you sure know a lot. I am sure you are just well versed in what each unit does. Well Mr I am not SWAT, the whole city is undermanned. As far as them having to respond to from home they are using the buddy system. There are over thirty squad cars assigned to SWAT not including the Sgt's. So you are full of BS. There on call 24/7? Now I know why their carrying their Rifles on the Lake shooting and drinking. Save you're BS. There suppose to train. I know this may be new to you since you are NOT a SWAT guy but that's what their function is. That is why they get an hour and a half a day to work out and stay in shape. Daley's total take home pension is just over $180,000, and the interesting thing is he contributed at a much lower rate, because the deductions came from his first assemblymen's salary, so he saved himself almost a half million bucks in out of pocket contributions...and I though hizonner was kind of a slow witted guy all of these years!
My bud is a deployed marine/cop and the city is giving him a hard time about paying into our pension and Fop is not helping either.
