It's a Bird! It's a Plane!!

  • The government is warning small-plane pilots they could be shot down if they violate a no-fly zone in Chicago during the NATO summit.

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a flight advisory for May 19 to 21, banning non-commercial aircraft from flying within 10 nautical miles of downtown Chicago and below 18,000 feet.

“The United States Government may use deadly force against the airborne aircraft if it is determined that the aircraft poses an immediate security threat,” according to the advisory.

Should be a fun time.

Isn't it comforting to know that the US Government is willing to blast a plane out of the sky and let all the pieces rain down upon the people in order to protect the NATO dignitaries?

Thanks again Mr. Mayor. I now can imagine the remnants of some poor bozos plane raining down on my wife and kids too.

This NATO deal of yours keeps getting better and better. What a great deal. On the bright side, from what I've read about the other cities that agreed to host NATO in the past: It should only cost us tax payers in the neighborhood of $300 MILLIONS DOLLARS!

I'm in the airline industry and I must say this is standard any time you have a VIP or high profile situation. You will see Temporary Flight Restricions (TFR) over any area which the President is in, or events like the Super Bowl. While the wording of deadly force isn't used, there is a "permanent" TFR over Disney World too!

Here's an idea. All the police that are scheduled to work the NATO summit should all hit the medical the day of the protesters scheduled parade. Let these crazy fuckers go bananas and tear up the entire city. Let them storm McCormick Place and drag Rahm and all these other "dignitaries" out into the streets and cover them in shit and piss and then slit all their throats! After that, 99% of the world would deem the NATO-FEST a HUGE success!

Things that make you go hmmm.

Well let's see.

Suppose you have a plane that is traveling at 180 knots. That's three miles a minute. With a 10 mile no-fly zone that gives you about a 3 minute reaction time. A small business jet can easily double that speed and cut the time in half.

With that said are the fighter jets going to be patrolling 24/7 downtown or are the missile batteries being installed and manned 24/7 on the rooftops that the people are "OBVIOUSLY" not being told about because that's the way the Fed does things?

It's a rhetorical question.

No Missiles on Our Roofs Please, We’re British

East Londoners are balking at a 2012 Olympics security measure they say will make them a possible target of terrorism.

By Anoosh Chakelian | @anooshchakelian | April 30, 2012

Residents of East London are worrying that they will be made terrorist targets after receiving letters from the Ministry of Defense announcing that high-velocity missiles (HVMs) may be attached to their roofs as a security measure during this summer’s Olympic Games.

Residents of the Bow Quarter – a complex of around 700 apartments near the Olympic Park – is the first of several other nearby areas that will be fitted with rooftop missiles as part of a strategy to prevent an airborne terrorist attack during the Games.

Londoners are still finding out about their wonderful Olympics -- a bunch of yuppers in some luxury building have just discovered that there will be men with surface-to-air missiles on their roof, as it is an ideal vantage point. They're having kittens.

Probably here we get the same for close-in, stationed in the security zone, plus air cover orbiting.

Not to worry, won't cost us a penny.

Check out the LA Times website for video of an attack by Occupy protesters on LAPD. Video is notable for a few things:

-- Protesters snuck up behind a line of police and were carrying a sign that actually was made of wooden pallets; they used it as a weapon to ram the officers. Their approach was very calculated.

-- They were masked and ran away immediately into the crowd. What are you guys doing about masked protesters? Don't they deserve extra attention? They're masked so they can pull stuff.

-- Easy to see why not enforcing the ridiculous eavedropping act (I know you guys like it, but it is ridiculous) makes sense. You wouldn't have the manpower to book all those people. As a protest, it's pretty much a joke, if you look at the video carefully. Almost everybody is taking videos with their recorders or their phones or their still cameras, just standing there filming the police who were maintaining their lines, peacefully.

-- Excellent reaction from LAPD, very cool heads. They were set upon and outnumbered. An over-reaction would have provoked violence and the officers might have had to use deadly force. Instead, they kept their composure, called for backup, and did not escalate the situation.

-- Excellent LAPD spokesperson, an on-the-ground one-star named Smith. The police are "facilitating" the protesters' exercise of their First Amendment rights. This is consistent with the Chief Charlie Beck culture of "constitutional policing."

-- A good job by the finest urban police force in the United States.

==================

LAPD Cops did good. For the most part, so has every other city PD in the US that has experienced these kind of protests in the last decade. Seattle had a moderately nastier situation but they handled it well too.

Note that the use of brute force by police was very targeted against those that needed it. As it should be. Not much in the way of serious complaints about how it was handled.

Look at how Chicago handled the protesters that camped out in a city park not long ago. The city handled that very well.

I think these knuckleheads have about run out of steam. They have not been able to provoke either the police or the politicians into acting stupidly as they have in other parts of the world. Chicago may be their last chance to do so.

The A-10 can carry air-to-air missiles. I also suspect that the backwash/wake turbulence coming off an A-10 would rip the wings off a small plane if the pilot did a close fly-by.
