Jefferson Tap Verdict

Liable for $30,000 plus:
  • A federal jury on Friday awarded a combined $33,700 in damages to four men who accused several off-duty Chicago police officers of an unprovoked beating inside the Jefferson Tap Bar & Grille in 2006.

The jury did not award any damages against the city, which had also been sued.

Four of the six officers who were hit with damages by the jury are responsible for paying the damages themselves.
Can this one go away now?

Do they have to pay plaintiffs attorneys fees? This has to equal to the award.

Well at least the responding officers were removed from the lawsuit and thus the city taxpayers saved a couple of bucks. Right or wrong next time get together at someones home and commiserate especially if you plan on drinking. We will never win in the court of public opinion whenever something bad happens in a bar, NEVER.

These guys are lucky to have there jobs, i think they'll gladly pay the amount and move on. The best part is that these clout babys were reinstated immediately after the ctiminal trial while many others remain stripped. The excuse is always "You guys still have civil trials pending" so thus you cant be reinstated.

Stay out of bars and walk away from these types of losers when provoked or this is what you'll get from our police hating citizens, juries, and judges. The days of kicking loudmouth drunk's asses and laughing about it the next day at work are OVER. You are a 3rd class citizen now in this anti-police society. Get used to it.

Wow clout babies!! People love to talk crap don't hate!! It was just a bar fight. This guys have gone through shit the past six years plus they are all working police pull up their stats before opening your mouth. The sgt got 90% of the hit and of course we will be having a benefit for them. If u have something negative to say about ur own people u work with just find urself another job!!

The judgement was very small so it goes to show the jury did not think much of this fight and the alleged damages sustained. However, the jury heard all of the evidence and they believed the police officers started this fight and were in the wrong. Stay out of bar fights. These guys are lucky they were not fired.

Nothing good happens late at night, especially to cops drinking in a public tavern. There are no more Mike's. Drink at home or in your garage. And never, ever in the back of a police station.

Those days are gone gone gone.

well, first off the judge dismissed 5 coppers off of the case last week. Second, this was a jury trial. soooooooooo, what did the judge have to do with this? Another know it all who it all.

I can not believe the responses from some of you if you are "The Police". "The city taxpayers save a couple of bucks". "They gladly pay the amount and move on". "These guys are lucky to have their jobs".

You guys are idiots! You weren't there, I wasn't there. I don't think any officer in there right mind would be fine paying money out of their own pocket. There are hundreds of bar fights every year and the patrons from those fights are not paying punitive damages out of federal court.

Who cares if they have clout. The bottom line is the punitive damages that officers are paying. See the big picture here and quit bitch'in about how lucky someone is to have their job back or that they have clout.

"get together at someone's home". Are you fucking joking. We are people, we are tax payers. The CPD should never have been mentioned in this at all. Unless those guys announced their office & presented themselves as the police there should never have been any issue other than a 19p for the responders. Mutual combatants, does this mean anything!!

Watch for a new policy about having a firearm in any public place that serves alcoholic Beverages real soon, whether you are drinking or not. No more eating on duty at places that serve booze, either. Then watch what happens to the first ones caught violating it. Fired, on the spot. It's coming, soon.

Be very afaid! In this commie city that hates the police, punitive damages against us may become the norm. The F.O.P. better get a handle on this before this train leaves the tracks. We work our entire lives and put approximately 10% of our pay into our pension fund. Now the politicians are acknowledging that it is not our fault, however we must sacrifice. We will continue to be shit on unless we convey to them that they CANNOT shit on us. We are more worried about who the Sox are playing than what is happening to the funds that will allow us to survive with dignity in our old age. Nero fiddled while Rome burned! WAKE UP FOLKS before it is too late.

Could have been any of us?

No, jackass. You are wrong. Dead wrong. Unless "any of us" are drunken idiots that aren't smart enough to know when to walk away. Let me guess - you're one of those guys that lets his ego get in the way of the ability to solve conflicts. Youre the guy that "can handle" a few too many drinks and still drive home. Hell, you can probably drive even better with a few under your belt.

You can donate your hard earned cash to reward grown men who shouldn't have gotten in that predicament in the first place. I'll save my money for the coppers that get jammed up legitimately or have medical issues they can't afford, not some drunks that willingly participated in a barroom brawl under security cameras because some other drunks hurt their feelings.

You should know that rewarding bad behavior only encourages more of the same. Look no further than any ghetto dweller for proof of this phenomenon. Let them work a part time job or hustle up some more court to cover the 8 large ...it'll be the most valuable lesson they may ever learn.

What about the three coppers from MAIS who each received a punitive damages judgment against them for $50,000.00 ($150,500.00 total, a fourth was hit with a $5oo.oo judgent) 4 weeks ago. All they was investigate the truck driver who killed two people, ran over 20 more and destroyed a CTA train station in the process. No alcohol involved, just doing their jobs. Where's the outcry for them.

I know a couple of these guys and they are decent guys. I don't care if they may have been a little bit in the wrong. I've been a little in the wrong myself before and probably will be again. When's the benefit, I'll be there.

This is actually a pretty good verdict. Those officers who were actually on duty were let out of the case and the City was found not liable, since these guys were not acting within the scope of their employment. I always hate seeing cops getting hit with damages when they do something wrong in the line of duty... but if you get in a bar fight on your own time and beat someone up, you should be liable just like anyone else. Technically anyone can be sued for beating someone up, but since Plaintiff's attorneys generally can't collect fees for those cases (the fee shifting statute is only in 1983 cases), they don't take them. Plus given the scope of the damages claimed by the Plaintiffs- PTSD, long term psychological injury, etc (even though they are BS)- the amounts awarded were extremely low. It's a moral victory anyway, imho.

Thanks, chaplain Fr. Brant (brandt?) for showing up in your collar to lend moral support to our guys during the trial. That was cool. And who knows, maybe it or your prayers helped pursuade judge/jury to do what was right.
