Economic Impact of Crime
Chicago’s sharp spike in murder rates could prove very costly if it lasts, according to a national study released Tuesday.
Violent crime costs Chicago about $5.3 billion a year, the study concluded.
A 25 percent drop in murders would result in home values rising $5.5 billion, according to the Center for American Progress, which studied eight cities including Chicago. Murder in Chicago is up 36 percent this year through June 10, according to the police department.
Researchers came up with $1.1 billion in direct costs of violent crime for Chicago by looking at spending on police, prosecutors and jails — as well as medical expenses and lost income of crime victims and the lost income of locked-up criminal defendants.

008 dist., all time due cancelled on weekends,is that true? because savages are being savages po's have to get fucked out of what they earned? glad I dont work for that commander, is that the same commander who has bout 6 months to go for a gold start pension? or are the savages gonna do you in and get knocked back down to LT? if you do,plz dont come back to 010,you were a self centered ass when you were here.
How about all those empty seats at the Cell during the Sox-Cubs series. With all the urban mayhem continuing, don't think it's a coincidence.
How much does it cost us in medical costs to keep saving these gang banging ghetto pieces of shit. Every time they get shot they get free medical treatment, do you think for a second that they pay the bill. Cook county doesn't even send a bill to these savages because they know it is a waste of time. Start deducting money from their entitlement programs. The savings would be in the billions. Hell I should be a politician I could solve all the financial problems of this country by not paying shitheads to remain shitheads.
Look at the picture they use with the police suv and crime scene tape. Where was that taken in the far NW or SW side of Chicago. Is the sun-times really going to use that for their photo. Maybe they should use their stock pile of photos from the area where the 99.99% of the crime and billions of dollars are being wasted. It is absolutely laughable that the sun times is called a newspaper.
Would it not be better for the city to hire some new police people and try to fight crime with more personnel?
This study is good for officers. It proves that policing is not an expense but rather an investment. Committing resources to properly man, equip, train and compensate police officers pays dividends that traditionally don't appear on a business balance sheet. It's time to invest in our City's public safety instead of slashing officers and their compensation and pensions.
don't come back to 010,you were a self centered ass when you were here.
We will gladly take him back in 016!
They're counting lost section eight taxpayer money. And lost LINK card, WIC and other public benefits. It could be in the millions. Now I'm scared.
JohnL 03:11, you sound like a genius. Don't think so hard, you may drop your juice box.
to John L - Obviously you are a first time reader to this blog. Go back and read the last years blogs.
As an everyday citizen that reads various news and blogs to be informed, they really need to consider the loss of money coming from us average people who now think twice about going out on the town and spending our money here. North Ave Beach? Think not. Navy Pier? Nope. Community festivals? Not likely.
I am happier sitting at home, making my own popcorn and sitting in front of the TV with the a/c on and watching something to totally escape.
Well if you factor in all the grape pops and flaming hots that the murder victims would have purchased during their lifetimes. I can see how it would be in the billions.
Scc can you answer this question for me? Numerous news papers and Tv stations say that cpd has more then 12000 police officers. They never really give exact number but it appears to me that it's more like 9000. Can you be more specific on how many sworn members does Chicago Police have? Public would like to know and don't include any non sworn personal working for Chicago Police department. I know city budget factors in 13500.

Sorry, but with THAT attitude, the shitheads won't vote for you!
I think it read crime victims, not defendants.
Bit of a difference.
I stand corrected, they included defendants.
That'll teach me to have Irish coffee for breakfast.
How much are all the marauding gang bangers on Michigan Avenue costing the city?
SCC, read it again. Who did the study? Center for American Progress?? Surprised you missed that one. Hard core leftist/progressive/commie think tank. Major donor is The George Soros.
And here comes that famous bullshit line from Rahm about the children in his efforts to have police write tickets for pot. "Emanuel said he intends to include language in the ordinance that requires the city to dedicate a portion of the revenue from tickets to fund anti-drug use campaigns FOR CHILDREN".

Wow you are reaching. WTF does "urban mayhem" have to do with a baseball game. First of all I was at the game on 19Jun12 and there were over 30,000 in attendance. The kids and I had a great time and didn't see any fights or any signs of "urban mayhem" or even any sign of a gangbanger looking for trouble. In fact there were more police and security standing around with their thumbs up their asses than any thugs. Maybe less people were at the game because A)It was hotter than hell(still 90 degrees at 7:10 P.M. game time) B) they didn't have tickets or chose not to spent the inflated price because it was a Sox vs Cubs rivalry(I got my tickets for free in case you were wondering). I know crime is up in the city but don't relate it to the attendance of a game.I know Chicago is a scary place to you, but step out of mom's basement and see the world around you. It's not always a bad place. Signed CPD who was at the game and didn't see any scary gangbangers.
I believe they are referring to the lost (welfare) income of inmates.
008 blows stay out! But nobody off on weekends just isn't true. They allow around two pos off, more than generous in the bosses' eyes
Buy inflatable cops. This way, all cars would be 2 man. A real person in the driver's seat, and the inflatable on the passenger side. What shortage?

Everything he does Im sure is from down town. He was self centered but I rarely meet a person in this field who isnt.
If you let every cop do what they want, you wouldnt be able to run this Department. Its a job that I fore-see sucking even worse until my retirement. I hope I will make it through my last years and am able to receive a pension at 50. The job itself is great, but the leadership and back-up (on the street, from our "leaders", media, politicians, citizens, courts, etc...) is almost non-existant in most parts of the City.
I thank God (can I still do that?) everyday that Im surrounded by dedicated Officers and assigned to a Westside District(010). There is nothing like hearing to the few Officers left on Zone 10 (010 and 011) being there for each other when it hits the fan.
We need a jump start on this Department. Dont screw with the Po's, Detectives, Supervisors, etc... who have years to go. Get rid of the outsiders and clue-less leaders Meritorious leadership promoted beyond their capacities. I miss the days of the respected bosses walking on to a Police involved crime scene and knowing it was all going to be alright. Everybody is shaky now and you feel like everything is their "first time". Nobody seems to care because they are always moving on/up/retiring.
Lastley, HIRE MORE COPS!!!! Not only is it good to have new blood,(people who believe they will make a difference) but we all need help. HIRE MORE COPS!!!! HIRE MORE COPS!!!! HIRE MORE COPS!!!! HIRE MORE COPS!!!!
OT
Dear Chicago Park District,
You had all winter. You had all spring. It's the warmest week of the year and fire hydrants are open around the city because of your poor performance.

YOU'RE FIRED -- What the hell have you been doing?!?!
Who appoints these clowns?

Or?!!?
It scheduled on a week day and not week end?! So negative....
Anoym ass--
rahm doesnt care about what u.s. citizens think about the city. he wants foreigners to have a good impression. he can sell all the bs he wants, some of the tourists who had the misfortune to be harassed by flash mobs will spread the word. 5 m for the pritzker new hotel, but no overtime pay for pos. the question is how long will it take the news media to tell the real truth.
If a 25% drop in murders in Chicago represents a gain of $5.5 billion dollars in wealth then the reciprocal must also be true whereas a 36% increase in murders is costing the city an additional $7.75 billion dollars!
What's the political apparatus response?
Well first we'll have the department of justice do a gun running Fast and Furious program to help arm the Mexican drug cartels.
Then we'll encourage the illegal immigrants crossing the border with the contraband to come on in. Helping the drug cartels with their human trafficking operation too.
Promises of work permits, sanctuary and zones of impunity. Promises that we won't send you back. We Don't Care. Our laws are just suggestions that's all. Pay no attention to the laws.
Then we'll go one step further to encourage an illegal culture.
We'll lower the penalties on pot possession.
Bring it on in boys, we need you to attract more money to the sanctuary city. The corporations are not doing it so we're turning to the black market for help.
That's how desperate and corrupt the political apparatus is now. And what a surprise eh? Most of the Chicago aldermen agree with the mayor on the pot plan that will help fund the much needed be-headings in Mexico.
Anything else you drug cartel leaders need just let the Chicago politicians know k?
/sarcasm
If you're going to legalize pot, legalize it and tax it. Don't fund the drug cartel violence with this ticket nonsense.

Too much!
That's why the governor has cancelled the seniors prescription drug aid and why medicare is getting cut. All the money being spent on these shitheads EACH AND EVERY damn WEEKEND.
The seniors and the real needy people are being penalized for the political f--k-ups. These shitheads are helping the cost of healthcare explode by over 9% per year. Good luck being able to afford any of it when they take away the cost of living increases in the pensions.
If you took this job for the healthcare and pension forgetaboutit. It's an illusion. The social contract doesn't mean a thing to these people do you think that a union contract is gonna be any different. Why even bother with the kabuki theater of contract negotiations. The cities words mean nothing.

Will it have vibrating zones? If so, count me in! :)
I can't wait to leave this city and state for good!
The democRAT party ruined this place.
We have assholes like Sen. Durbin who care more about prison inmates, claiming they are mistreated because the have windowless cells and can only see a patch of sky!
Good Grief!
The emergency room care alone must be staggering.
---not a cop
I can understand why the subhuman animals would continue to vote dumbocratic; LINK, welfare, free healthcare and free housing. The question is why would anyone who pays any income or property tax vote for people that are taking money away from your family through taxes to subsidize these animals to gang bang and have illegitimate kids they don't take care of and can't afford. Put a lifetime cap on entitlements and force these oxygen thieves to put some meat in the pot. Wake the fuck up America!!!
People like durbin and the rest of the liberal hacks really need to be defeated! They have no clue how to take care of people that actually pay the taxes!
All violence will cease after this weekend, I promise. I'm working the gun turn-in program on Saturday. Trust me. No, really, I'm not kidding.
My previous comments referred to the long held perception that Sox Park (old Comiskey/ new Cell) was located in an unsafe area to begin with. Despite the attempts by the media to stifle reports of gang violence (aka "urban mayhem") the stories have reached downstate and national news outlets, affecting attendance at public events. Personally, I don't feel that the Cell is any less safe than Old Comiskey was standing in the shadows of the Taylor Homes. I was addressing the PERCEPTION issue among civilians.
By the way, glad you and the family enjoyed the game and thanks for your continued service. Be safe.
