What's the Message?

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel does not plan to appeal an arbitrator’s order to rehire four firefighters who were fired for padding mileage reports, but continued his tough talk on employee misconduct.

“I give no quarter to anyone who does anything wrong or violates the public trust,” Emanuel said at an unrelated news conference Friday. “When it comes to a culture and atmosphere, we condone no violation of the public trust. None. Zero tolerance.”

Unless an arbitrator rules against your Inspector General though. Then "zero tolerance" is out the window. And how about this?

  • It was the second time that Benn ordered the same four firefighters be returned to work after they were fired for misconduct. Four years ago, the city fired them for accepting and not reporting pay from private companies to do weekend pump inspections at high rises, but Benn ruled that suspensions were more appropriate.

These reinstated guys were the same four people fired years ago? So they just figured out a way to get the city to "compensate" them for the loss of their weekend pay doing pump inspections?

We like firefighters and all, but this really takes the cake.

Nice "Broken Windows" message eh? The laws don't matter and the rules don't matter.

Teflon firemen.

So-called trustworthy men in uniform and everyone must be doing it and that's why they HAD TO back off or fact a huge lawsuit or mass terminations.

It like finding three LIVE hand grenades in a Wriglyville basement. B/A evacuates neighboring houses. It's was an endangerment to the entire community. Was there any charges of possession of an explosive device. Terrorism investigation? DHS called in. All we see in the media is well there was no criminal intent.

What kind of message does that send? Is there no city ordinance...

Know the whole story first. The owner of the grenades died 2 years ago. How do you charge a dead man? The grenades were found by a maintenance man, who called police. The investigation located the owner's family, living in the suburbs, who thought the grenades were the inert ones he player with as a kid, not knowing that his WWII veteren father had real ones too.

Boy you would think firing a bunch of admitted theives would be a great way o save the pension fund some money.

Rahm didn't give up this easy when he was caught violation election law and running for Mayor while not having been a Chicago resident. He fought tooth and nail until he defeated truth and justice.

Why does he turn into a pussy when it come to firing crooked, thieving firefighters????

The part overlooked is that they are BOSSES. Clout over everything, it's like a math equation. Bosses get away with it, every time, from abususe of office to theft and incompetence.

These guys were cought stealing from the city and taxpayers.
If it had been a policemen, they would have been fired and the US attorney would charge them too.
Of course, there are officers of long suspensions for having ticked off a boss, nothing more.

SCC. If you "like firefighters and all" then why make an issue of it? Unless you are familiar with all of the testimony at the hearing perhaps it might be best to not comment at all.

Only in Chicago can four thieves, disgraces to the CFD uniform, be fired because they deserved it and then sue to get their jobs back by telling the arbitrator that "yes we stole but everybody does so hire us back or fire all of them." What the fuck ? Just when you think youve seen it all. To all you corrupt mother fuckers who think your sacred city job is your god given right - go fuck yourselves.

I think if anyone every completely examined the firefighters contract you woul;d be surprised. Not by the "me too" clause but by the "second chance", crap like that and the different way they are disciplined.
If a CFD gets a DUI its an illness, if a CPD does its termination

I imagine most Firemen are professionals and not crooks.

This story is appalling and yet so typical of the Chicago Way.

I suppose, the lesson is: The Union will protect you no matter what you do. Just make sure you keep voting for the Chicago Way candidates and buying those raffle tickets.

The reason Mr. Cocksucker isn't going to appeal is to further embarrass the CFD and to also con the CPD into thinking he'll do the same when we take our contract to arbitration. He's got that fucker covered already.

After Benn the Bitch gives it away to the CFD for the crimes they committed, he'll pull a 180 and porchfuck the police on the next contract to "make up" for what he did for Emanuel on the CFD crime.

Bet on it.

The Fire Commissioner himself can put a stop to this by placing some truly trustworthy SUPERVISION in this so-called 'Inspection Unit.' Clearly, the supervision that exists there now is a real joke.

One thng that this doesn't tell you is that the 4 that were part of the "pump payment" had done the mileage part before they were fired for the mileage.
Also the pump scandle was also not frowned upon by the city. In fact it was the city's fault. They told the inspectors that they had to do test on the weekend but not pay them through the city because they didn't want to pay them O.T. So they told them the test company would pay them.

CFD does it different. The four guys that were fired four years ago remained in the same elite unit or at least special unit. On CPD after any lengthy suspension your are moved from that unit
Guess CFD bosses have different views on punishment than the CPD bosses

Anyone who has fought for their jobs on bs complaints really gets frustrtated whenb they read this crap. Not firing them for being found guilty of basically stealing is just in-frickn-sane!
If they were CPD members the us atty would be involved and all of their pics wpould be in paper while they were coming out of 219 for trial.
Just look at the Police Board website and you will see how unfair it is to fire in some of those cases when you have CFD basically getting away with theft.

Rahm is trying to build up a distrust of Fire Fighters before the contract hardball.

Watch and see that there will be fewer and fewer good rescue stories of the Rahm-o'clock News.

But let there be any slipups and he will be screaming that those greedy firemen deserve to have their pensions, pay and benefits slashed.

Don't be so dramatic guys/girls with the WOE IS ME attitude. If you asked the majority of FF's, they would probably say that this "win" is not something they were even for. It's an embarrassment. The main problem with most unions is that you can't seem to get rid of the biggest pieces of shit that make us all look bad.

And CPD is getting screwed because the mayor likes us more? give me a break. Did you see his latest proposal? Boy I wish he'd stop being so kind to us. Your fight is with him, not us. We have our own shit to worry about.

Hello Naive Firefighter,

Benn would NEVER put those four back to work without the City's blessing. For sure, he will get the interest arb for your contract. And, for sure, he will AGAIN do what City wants. You'll see.

It sounds worse than it actually is in some ways. Just about everyone cheats at least a little on expense reports now and then. Employers actually encourage it many times, either directly (as it appears was the case here) or indirectly via poorly written or poorly enforced policies.

I have a hard time blaming employees for taking advantage of a situation that appears to have been created by the employer.

When have you ever seen a copper fired for a misdemeanor DUI? I've known of at least a few situations where they were suspended but came back to work. The ones that have been fired are because they also killed someone and are doing prison time.
