When will the City of Chicago define "merit" in writing with standardized criteria? CPD "merit" is nothing more than a shameless euphemism for CLOUT = arbitrary management discretion. No transparency. No accountability. Undefined CPD "merit" is perpetuated by the beneficiaries of CLOUT: the so-called "merit board".
Legitimate objective written test scores and outstanding felony arrest activity are meaningless for promotion.

Work hard my fellow officers. I always come in at the end of my shift with parking tickets, contact cards, tows, impounds and maybe an arrest. There are too many dogs on this job. How can you make 70K a year and come in to check off with zeros across the board?
This merit shit makes me wanna puke my guts out. The hard working coppers who bust their asses everyday, AND next on the list, can't get promoted because someone's driver OR someone's secretary is thought to be more deserving to get that promotion. What a fucking joke.

Well Accretive Health, is down close to 7% All those companies Illinois bailed out are failing. Ford is down 3%. Sears down 2.5%. Motorola Mobility that got $100 million in tax breaks and was then sold to Google is getting ready for massive layoffs. The US post office is getting ready for massive layoffs. Groupon will be lucky to last the end of the year....Greece is failing. Spain is failing..
Yeah it looks like it's time to borrow more money and give it to the bankers to make sure that they stay safe and that they don't have to suffer any lower standard of living.

All the promotions are "merit" where I work at in the city. The political wunderkinds down grade the deserving during the verbal interviews. The clouted always perform flawlessly.

And you probably don't have the college credits to get promoted.But for the past 20 plus years merit promotions have been the complete opposite of what you're trying to insinuate.And yes, I was hired with a college degree before the city made it a requirement.

Secondly, there are plenty of guys out there that have gotten jammed up and have taken time for shit they didnt do. Of course not all the time, but there are many cases, just ask around. We worked 2230 hrs to 1100 hrs... that's 12.5 hours... minus the .5 hour lunch it still comes out to 12 hours. So they can try that bullshit if they like but it will be grieved and we will win.

Hi Dumb Dumb, so you have 21 years on the job? You must work inside, work a special spot/unit or are immune from what I have seen. So why are cops left and right laying down and doing nothing but answering their jobs? Well because today even if you do the right thing you can get into trouble. You can make a totally legit arrest and if dude you arrested is pissed and determined he can make your life a living hell. He can sue you, get CR #'s on you, name you as a defendant on a civil trial. And chances are he will win over you. Plus go to IPRA's website and the Chicago Police Board's website and just read the cases you asshole.
IPRA is not impartial and they would just love to hang a copper dry. Plus the same asshole and his family members can call you for police service and then beef on you (oh he said the "N" word at me). Also the bosses when it comes down to it will abandon you. You are on your own Mr. Working Police Officer.
You sit there and judge the rest of us? Go fuck yourself! You act like you are better than most of the "non working police"? Go double fuck yourself. You are on the side of the city and not on the side of your brothers in blue? Then go triple fuck yourself. One complaint I have about the state of the job is that old-timers on the job are expected to work like they are 23 y.o.'s. I'm 36 with 13 years on, so I can still handle it, but when I got on, guys with 20 plus years on in their 50's who paid their dues in ghettos were taken care of better. Time for youngsters to step it up, and obviously we need more young guys. This is a young mans job. Tired of seeing coppers in their 50's being worked like dogs and having heart attacks. Look out for the old-timers in your district. We'll all be their someday.

Well said!! I used to be big a worker... One might say even a company man. After 16 years of getting kick down, CR#, lawsuits, good cases getting dropped because of liberal judges and jurors ( and no assholes I never did anything illegal) , bosses not giving a shit about anything but there next session of asskissing, I am done. Now city wants to take $7000 a year from us (if you think they're not going to try and get it from us then get your head out of your ass) when we're over 2000 police officers short? No promotions...stuck in the city. Try and take your family on Michigan ave on Fri or sat night. $70000 a year? Bullshit brake it down....Pension, union dues, fed tax, state tax, property tax(my house value went down 50% but property tax went up....explain that to me), sales tax, city sticker, plate sticker..... Here's an idea, make everyone take the whole test. And if you get merit promoted, your score is listed right next to your name under the merit list. Hell, they are getting a promotion that rightfully belongs to someone else, why not let the world know how they did.

Why R we our own worst enemies? Snitches, cowards, bullies that hide under their whites, and a general back stabbing type environment. Needed something in W/C' office when Captain's ran watch. It was just curfew slip for an E#. I asked the pussy desk where the curfew sheets were & they said W/C had them. No one wood go in this merit hack's office. This douche gets off on people in fear of him. It's Supervisors like this that cause good police to turn into dogs. When I 1st came on I wanted to do it all. The tours weren't long enough. Wanted to make every single arrest I could. Reality sets in & a strange "fuck it" attitude comes over. It seems I work for the "The Boss" now, not the job.

Don't need a detectives class. Hell, I'm only going to handle 400 or 500 cases this year..
Worst job in the dept now. Hours and hours of typing, late lists, terrible case load (UNLESS YOU'RE DOING HOMICIDES OR ARE IN THE CHOSEN CLUB) and hours in traffic if you live on the north side.
AND YOU WILL GO TO AREA 1 OR 2. THATS A GUARANTEE. IT WILL BE A SHOCK TO YOU, THAT I GUARANTEE ALSO.

Merit is no worse then the select jagbags who are invited to select study gruops and given the test or answers , then come out on top to look like they are brains ! And we all know who a lot of them were and they move up the ladder so fast. That is cheating and corruption at it's best. The only fair solution is a POP QUIZ type test.

State law requires a 75% yes vote from the teachers before they can strike. The democRATic state legislature made sure the hurdle was quite high, but it seems the teachers will satisfy the state law. They have been treated terribly by TD 9.5 and his Jamaican Blizzard guy.

Sgt.'s and Lt.'s list were done as of Friday but because someone leaked it out HR got pissed and intentionally held it back while they investigate the leak. Apparently, Ladner who was out of town on Friday was not to happy and so the decision was made to hold it back pending investigation.
List won't be out until they feel it is adequate now...
To all the fucks "in the know" or "snoops"!
Now the legit rank order people once again have to put their lives on hold. Thanks a lot!

Come on SCC, the merit picks are the best and brightest. Just because they only have to take the first part (the easy part)of any promotional test means nothing. I'm sure they would have done brilliantly on the actual test which is the second part.
Here's an idea, make everyone take the whole test. And if you get merit promoted, your score is listed right next to your name under the merit list. Hell, they are getting a promotion that rightfully belongs to someone else, why not let the world know how they did.

I think the problem are not the promotions but the use of the word "merit" as though we all aren't hard workers on this job no matter the spot. The word "merit" has become the same as saying "clout" or " favorite" or whatever. Let's just call it what it really is. Management Picks much like for watches. Let's just take the word merit out of it. It causes to much division in the ranks. There's alot of bad supervisors with great test scores. I don't care how you get here, but what are you going to do while your here!
I will never make sergeant and now I am holding out for commander, deputy chief or field marshall. I can work a computer and throw darts at a map on the wall to predict when a mutt will kill another mutt as well as Lance Gildersleeve or whatever his name is.

What's a station shift supervisor? Maybe XO needs to monitor ur gps, or maybe the sgts. should, at ur suggestion...
