Springfield Does it Again

  • Legislation aimed at bolstering funding for state parks by increasing license plate fees by $2 and charging fees to out-of-state users of state parks was approved by the Illinois House tonight and moves to the Senate.

The measure also would charge users of off-highway recreational vehicles; charge an entrance fee to the Illinois State Museum in Springfield; allow fees to be placed on using a public beach, bike trail or equestrian trail; and increase registration fees for motorized watercraft.

Sponsoring Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley, said the measure would raise $15 million in its first year and $32 million in later years for the Department of Natural Resources, which has seen major funding cuts in recent years.

The bill passed on a 61-56 vote. It would bring the base license plate fee for cars to $100 a year, from the current $98.
Illinois - leading the way in taxing themselves out of existence.

When will the mayor get to charge for the public beachs in Chicago or will he just lease them.

Last time I checked, which was yesterday when I had to renew my sticker, it's $99 not $98. So they want to raise it to $101. Damn Dems can't keep the lies straight.

That ought to reduce congestion on the bicycle trails. No more seniors, children or weekend riders slowing the course. Just deep pocket yellow jersey speed demons, as it should be.

Gee, when the Republicans were in the Governor's Office, the State was in the black. Enter democRAT Rod, and his successor Quinn, and we are billions in debt. Democrats in charge of it all the last 12 yrs, and we are on the brink of financial ruin. Keep voting democratic, people. It's working so well.

Not to mention the $5 satellite TV tax and the $1/pack ciggy tax. They can't tax the people enough to dig themselves out of this hole they created. Like you said SCC. Kicking the can down the road...and each kick is getting shorter and shorter.

Doubtful the state will ever get that much money from these fees. Visitors and state residents will just not visit our parks and lakes. Another sure fire business and tourist killer. Maybe they could set up speed cameras on public parks to catch speeders. This state is fucking unreal. The more money we give our corrupt bastard politicians the more they piss away. tax tax tax.

Woo Hoo!!! I'm so excited about getting F@cked in the ass again by this state. Every time I turn my head they are milking the citizens for more money and not addressing the real problem budgeting before raising taxes.

Hell, you might even get a free phone, electricity, water and peoples gas!

In NC, you have to pay a fee to the state just to drive your car--a 1999 Toyota Celica (or similar model) will cost you $800 a year for the privilege to drive in that state. Not sure if that includes license plates. The fee is based on the year/make/model of car. How's that for insane?

In SC, there's not a fee like that. Not sure whatever states do that, but I can't believe IL hasn't done it already.

In a strange way I am glad they are doing this because any hesitation that I may have had about moving out of state at retirement has just vanished.

I was about to yell about adding a fee to use IL bike trails, but the reality is Wisconsin has been charging for a daily permit to bike their trails for at least 20 years already. The difference is, the money is WI actually goes towards outstanding upkeep of their trail system. Lord only knows where the IL money will go.

I don't care how much more money this corrupt state will raise, we will still be broke, politicians and such will line their greedy pockets and get richer. Remember when the tolls were to fund education? We have the worst roads in the nation, pay alot of money in tolls, and yes, the public schools are broken, Where did all ther money go? I'm moving out of Illinois asap.

Yea!!

Taxes fix everything and make for a perfect society. Great! This is super news.

I am sure all that money collected will be used responsibly and not at all face the danger of being pissed away by reckless government spendocrats who embrace profligacy and largess in the public sector.

Residents already pay taxes on the bike trails that run in their county..( I live in WILL county)first one on the list of my property taxes.. FOREST PRESERVE .. ALSO listed are the Park District..bike trails run out here through the county forest preserves.. THEREFORE any fees are TAXES which would make those that pay property taxes DOUBLE TAXED.. Not worried about the beach tax.. IF we decide to go to the beach we go to IN.. beaches are cleaner anyway.. but we have a small pool in our yard.. a trend most people are following..
To the person who said they pay xx amount to use the highways that I believe is what they have in IN it's a personal property tax..
To the person that said WI charged to ride the trails I was up there not long ago and there was no charge..
