- Officers hovering overhead in a Chicago Police helicopter spotted a band of suspected burglars breaking through the roof of a retail clothing store on the far South Side Saturday, prosecutors said today at their bond hearing.
The five men allegedly cut a hole in the roof of J Bees Sports & Casual Wear, 1301 E. 87th Street, shortly after midnight intending to make off with merchandise, according to court documents. That’s when the patrolling police
helicopter spied the alleged burglars and radioed for backup.
Leaving a bolt cutter, pick axe, sledge hammer, pry bar atop of the
building, the men hid in the building’s basement until they were found
by police and arrested.
Good job, but we still think unmanned UAV's are the wave of the future. Armed with napalm.

Now just a few Parkers and contact cards and the chopper pilots can work vri
Way to go Blue Thunder!!!!!
Armed with napalm
Too much of a PITA to aim the drop properly.
Hellfires or Maverick missiles zero in without having to take into account all the drop, speed, etc. They also (mostly) don't start huge fires in the neighborhood.
Point and click!
The new "Mogadishu on Lake Michigan" video game!!
Im just curious as to why the puppies werent called?
They have now been put on rat patrol in order to curb the exploding rodent population.
Boo say HUH?
The Officers in the unit do as much as they can given the inadequate resources dedicated. The local unit is a task force of cook county sheriff and CPD.
2 total helicopters to cover Chicago and Cook County vs 19 in LAPD and another 17 in LA Sheriffs office.
Insufficient resources dedicated by City and County to have the true impact it should and could.
LAPD alone flew nearly 19,000 hours and responded to over 50,000 incidents. CPD flies less than 2000 total hours.
LAPD had equivalent of two helicopters in air every day 24/7 not including LA Sheriff
Mayor should join with other lakefront Mayors to negotiate and assign a federally funded Coast Guard helicopter to Chicago.
Then City could then shutter the Fire Dept Air unit and reallocate local taxpayer funds to expand CPD helicopter fleet and maybe even save some money.
A Coast Guard unit would be far superior to CFD given their experience, training, equipment and exceptional rescue capability in all weather conditions (like Bering Sea conditions) CFD will not launch in the same poor weather conditions that the Coast Guard will. The same type of conditions that would likely necessitate a rescue response in the first place.
How about some airborne surveillance on the brass , just for the rest of us to know where to shop but probably most of the time their city vehicle is parked in their driveway.
How come the Chopper doesn't have a Gatling Gun? Or at least a couple of AA12s?
How are you supposed to fight crime unarmed? Who's in charge here?
Trade that chopper in and get an AC-130 and keep it at Midway.
Paint it Streets & Sanitation "powder blue" as it would be considered a street cleaner.
Forget building a park and get some real firepower on the South side.
have them land in district parking lots to do transports!

SCC...I wanted to pass along a HUGE thank you to CPD Officers from 8 and 22...Alsip PD and the guys flying the CPD Helicopter. Friends of mine were victims of a burglary to their home and due to the astoundingly quick response times by the aforementioned officers all 3 offenders were placed into custody with all proceeds recovered. These offenders my also be linked to as many as 3 other burglaries. Great job everybody...please know there are still good citizens out there that appreciate the dangers of this job and the hard work and professionalism officers display everyday. Stay Safe...JMO #5350
hopefully the chopper got a little time on the end....
Call came in as a burglary in progress from the owner/manager who was watching cameras at home. Chopper responded to scene and did a great job until a perimeter was set up and the group was placed into custody.
The real question is did the helicopter get their event number, that's all that really matters
Be sure to look at the picture -- it is like the original We Need A Wagon Over Here.

they were working on that new space station by the moon project
for the adler
just ask thier parents
they ain't criminals
why that judge would ask 50 and 100,000 bail when recogonize would do
Chopper unit is a Joint Task Force between Cook Cnty. Sheriff's Police and CPD.
The copper that found bad guys was Sheriff's Police.
Job well done by task force!
I agree. This whole thing could have been resolved with a drone and a couple of missiles. Then ID (if necessary) could have been done with a teaspoon and a few samples to the DNA lab.
each area should have a chopper up at all times..
Maybe a few predators like border wars can help too!!
I love the smell of napalm in the morning... Kilgore

Old Coast Guard mantra:
"Regulations say you have to go out. They don't say nothing about coming back"
For the person that talked about having a USCG helicopter stationed here is the the coast guard only has "rescue swimmers" where the CPD & CFD has divers. That is what the difference is. The coast guard doesn't deploy into the water until they see someone. Where the city divers will go under to look for people.
But I do agree that the city area should have a UScG helicopter near by at all times.
Id love it if the helicopter actually did what it was supposed to do. However if you work in a busy area of the city you know that its nothing like T.V. They miss everything and are never there when you need them. In LA they have something like 10 helicopters always up and they do what they are supposed to do. The only thing I notice the helicopters ever doing is cutting me off on the radio because they think they're important.

and in a perfect world each watch in each district would have a k9, et, and detectives
handsome young Scandanavians one and all
Every large city has helicopter units it's unbelevible that this city is in the dark ages still! We have to vote these idiots out of office and keep them out if we're going to survive as a viable city in the near future.
My props to the chopper unit. The city and county trying to save money by having a small chopper unit only puts the unit in danger, hope they have more than one chopper. If you use the same chopper every day 24/7 it could put a burden on the mechanics. Like county, they use every car 24/7 every shift, one car never gets a day off. I rather be in a car that breaks down than a chopper that breaks down.
