This time for Detective?  But they haven't made detectives in what, six years?  The manpower shortage must have been solved!

Now let's see if they grant any Time Due.

Anyone know why certain Commanders(gold-stars?) receive multiple CLOUT PICKS and other receive 1?

And who decided not to show merit pick on promotions? May be Mikey shield can send an EMAIL blast about it.

Promotions are great for moral. Even though i'm not on any of the lists, you have to believe that at some point you can get out of the beat car and blue shirt otherwise you just begin to get depressed and down on yourself and your career choice. I'm all for any promotions. Good luck and congrats to those on the short lists and those that have been waiting over 6 years for the call.

You mean there is still a chance for me to pull my retirement papers and suck some bosses ass and try one last time for that detective job I have been unable to get for my entire career? Uhhh, maybe not, I would rather slurp down my own vomit. Next week this time I will be burning my blue shirts in a pile of autumn leaves and never have to go to work on the CPD again. It will be all over in a couple of days.

But first, there is a Marathon to deal with!

Lose the positive attitude, kid. There is no room in this department or on this blog for someone with a sunny disposition. You're going to ruin it all. You need to learn how to bitch and moan about everything or you will get overun with jobs, assignments, and ridicule. Positive attitudes will NOT be tolerated. Repeat after me: "Can you believe this shit?", "You know what this mother fucking boss told me to do?". Then learn how to convince everyone that you're the only one who does any work at all. This is accomplished by bashing your co-workers whenever they're not around and calling them "do nothings" or "dogs". Follow this program and you'll be making rank very soon. Good luck.

Well your choices are simple if you are a south sider your choices are simple Area 1 or 2, which by the way are great places to work. In both of those Areas the bosses are great and are happy that you came to work, hell they even treat you like an adult. However if you live on the north side you can hope to get to Area 3, just be careful what you wish for if you want to work violent. If you enjoy being micro managed then this is the place for you. If you enjoy having your Lt. introduce himself to you and tell you how important he is then this is the place for you as well. And finally if you love to drink Diet Pepsi by the case then the Lt. and you will be fine. Word to the wise if you live north I would highly recommend going to Area 1, unless you like to be treated like a PPO.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, take it easy there little Johnny. First off, your probably not in the running. ( and don't comment back that you're a low number on the list). Second, does it really matter when it starts? So like if it starts in a few weeks you'll take it, but if it's a month and a day, forget about it? Stop being so eager and slow the fuck down. Be happy the city is promoting.

a bunch of sgts were just made because a bunch of sgts will be leaving in november--- now a class of det's is in the works--- congrats to anyone who made it but we just lost more people from the patrol division that we can't afford to lose--- zone 1 is a joke--- both districts under 200 officers with more leaving to retirement and promotion with no bid openings--- raps daily and some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city left unguarded because the beat cars are bouncing around like ping pong balls all night long instead of patrolling their beat...

Massive case loads, unless of course you are in homicide because everyone knows thats where the work is done to a 17% clearance rate.

For $75 a week extra after taxes and being sent to a 60 to 90-minute drive, one way to work and the same home everyday?

The D-unit has been destroyed by Gangs of New York, AND IS A SHELL OF WHAT IT ONCE WAS.

I made detective in 2004 before making sergeant in 2012. I scored just under 450 on the 99 dicks's exam, and under 200 on the last sergeant's test.

No clout here, but the best thing I ever did was not listen to the haters on this job. I have only average intelligence, but I did realize that I needed help for the 2006 sergeant's exam after bombing the 2001 test. I bought a bunch of management books and books on how to take police assessment exams and learned to think like a supervisor. ON THE DAY OF THE TEST!

I don't pretend to be a great guy, and I hope to be a fraction of the supervisor as some great bosses that I have had.

But believe me, you CAN get promoted if you take that shit seriously and apply yourself.

I'm one of the current ones that dont know what there doing, and let me tell you by the time I get to a scene or get my handout the investigation is already in the pooper. Why ? cause the great patrolmen that you are already has picked up the gun or the spent rounds. Etc etc

didn't call an ET didnt protect a crime scene and on and on. Then Reports are missing information and give conflicting information. arrest reports dont match case reports that dont match video.

but anyone who passes up det. is a fo0l - you've got to take advantage of going whereever you can on this job , if only to do something different once in awhile, come on aboard, we are glad to have you. Hopefully, you have less than 18 years on, so I go go back up north!

And thanks again to McCarthy for closing the 2 areas - for no reason whatsoever. ANd thanks to Rahm for believing in the wisdom of that stupid fucking move.

How about let the detectives bid straight up for the districts instead?

assign crime lab techs to detective division , train them to investigate and clear crimes .
they make sgt pay to take photos , collect evidence and process crime scenes for fingerprints .
we could use them in the d unit
that would eliminate one command spot and a bnch of do nothing house cats .

hey here's a little history of merit and the Detective's test (per Majeske v. City of Chicago2000):

1989 Det. Test: 3392 took written, of which the city wanted 650 to take oral. Of the 650, there were not enough minorities, argued the city. Therefore the “races” were separated (white, black, Hispanic) and the top 17% of each race were selected to take oral. Cutoff scores then became: white (82), Hispanic (79), and black (73). 619 ended up taking oral.

HURRAY !

But believe me, you CAN get promoted if you take that shit seriously and apply yourself

Really of average intelligence and you believe the nonsense you published. Every spot from Detective up is clout. There is no such thing as making it legit it's 100% CLOUT.

I agree with the original poster. One can make it legit even if one has average IQ. One needs to study, and I mean study, no less than ten hours a week for six months to a year. I did what the original posted wrote: Bought books, printed orders, training bulletins, copied training videos (you can), read orders onto CDs and listened during my commute, studied with several groups of friends, made flash cards, etc. I made it to dick and sergeant on the score.
I would assume, as most of us do, that there is some degree of cheating. By that I mean that "subject matter experts" are likely to "properly guide" family members, close friends and sexual partners on the intricacies of the test.
On the whole however, I believe that the great majority of people who make it on the score are legit.

This job has turned in2 a paycheck only gig. It's show up, do the 4 days, and leave. The clout bosses don't even have a decent command of the language. Most of these "Hacks" R the peeps that never read a book cover to cover in their whole lives. No friends that aren't cops & egos that R far larger then their actual talent and intellect offer.
Most of these promotions R people that never had a bad day in their time as a 9161.
Fuck U and U'r Daddy's Name. Now go throw yourself a big promotional party, Hack!

Perhaps, you have spent too much time texting, Mr. Intellect. R is a letter, not a verb.

assign crime lab techs to detective division , train them to investigate and clear crimes .
they make sgt pay to take photos , collect evidence and process crime scenes for fingerprints .
we could use them in the d unit
that would eliminate one command spot and a bnch of do nothing house cats .

There are only eight Police Forensic Investigators left and they are not making anymore as the current left overs will be phased out. Eventually the ET's will be given a pay bump to probably equal D-2A, not the Sgt's pay the PFI's got. The current Evidence Technicians are one hundred times more competent and efficient than the clouted PFI's, and ET's handle homicides every week in one third the time, with much better reports. ET's will be centralized to Homan Square soon, and will be dealing with everything from garage burglaries to homicides. The city is not contracting anything out Forensically speaking...........

On a serious note:

Does anyone know how much a detective can make in overtime per year? Can a detective realistically make an extra $20,000.00 in overtime?
---------------------------------
You can do that and more. I did it and it was no sweat. But that was in the early 2000 to 2006. When the D unit worked like a fine Swiss clock. 80 hours a period gives you 120. Nice $$ at 45 @ hour.
