Don't Expect a Quick Fix

Since it has only been a hundred years or so since they won anything:
  • The Chicago Cubs' 101-loss season is over, and it definitely was one for the books.

In a post-mortem in the media room known as the “dungeon” Thursday, baseball president Theo Epstein conceded the Cubs “buried ourselves right out of the chute and didn’t have the talent to overcome that.”

  • “There’s no getting around the fact that as far as the ultimate return on investment for the fans’ dollar, which is seeing a winning team, they going to get better value down the road than they’re getting right now,” he said. “It’s our job to make sure the debt value, and experience of watching a baseball team down the stretch and into October and celebrating with that team is priceless, and that’s ultimately how we can reward the fans’ support.”
Wow. That's some unmitigated bullshit all right.

How about trying this on for size northsiders - stop going to games.  Stop buying Cubs stuff.  Spend your money somewhere else.  When the Blackhawks sucked, and they sucked for a long time under Old Man Wirtz, a lot of people stopped going to games, refusing to spend top dollar on a half-assed product.  Wirtz had to die and leave the team to his son for them to turn it around, win a Stanley Cup and make the tickets worth something again.

The Bears spent some god-awful years in the wilderness before fielding a decent product and history appears to be repeating itself over by the lake.  The Bulls, too. The Sox seem to defy conventional wisdom for some reason - can't quite figure that one out.

The Sox are too close to the ghetto... ...tear them down and build up a decent restaurant/bar scene near the park

Neither the Cubs nor the game of baseball is the draw on the North side of town. For some reason, Cub "fans" are drawn to the rat-infested hellhole their team plays in. Blow the place up and the Cub organization finally might be forced to field a decent team.

Clearly you know nothing about what it takes to build a successful baseball organization in today's game. What Theo is doing now should have been done three years ago at least. The organization has been up front about what their plan is, so if Cubs fans like myself decide that we want to boycott games, then so be it, but don't criticize fans for still wanting to see their team play. Wirtz was flat out cheap; this is an orchestrated plan to spend money on scouting and development until the team is ready to compete. That's when they plan to spend money on major league talent again. What is most valued in baseball right now is young, cheap talent that is under team control until they hit free agency. That's why the Cubs are currently spending money on developing those types of assets. I'm not saying it's going to get them a World Series, but as a Cubs fan I'm glad to see they actually have a plan.

One hundred and four fruitless seasons. Let the drive for 105 [losses] begin in ernest today.

Sox park is a big reason for me to stay at home. No safe public transportation to use after a night game. The barley pop is colder at home & cheaper too.

CUBS FANS??? only about 10%, if that, of the people who go to games are fans of the cubs... the rest are dumb yuppie fucks, tourists, coorperate events, etc... they are CUBS CUSTOMERS, they go for there for "the cool wriglley experiance" people just go there and pay a $25 cover to get into the park (big beer garden), then pay for over priced beers, like they do at any other duce bag bar in the city. You could put a minor league team, or a t-ball team in there to play and people would still go to the games

It's like the White Sox went bi-polar.

Then we have the NHL absolutely out to self destruct and martyr themselves with greed.

Thank God the Bears are showing something... and the Bulls are a big unknown at this point..

It's rather elementary really. The White Sox = the south side; the south side = death via gunshot wounds; therefore, the White Sox = death via gunshot wounds. Ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

Well said SCC. The Cubs are adding 56 Premium seats without adding any premium talent. Those seats will generate close to $8,000 a game just in face value of the ticket and $8,000 a game in added concessions. Thats about $13,000,000 a year. You can add a really good arm for that kind of money, but I'm guessing Travis Wood will be their premier pitcher again next year. Keep spending suckas!

I'm a White Sox fan and have been one since we used to yell bad names at Jungle Jim Rivera. This year was a bonus and most games were worth watching. The Cubs games weren't, but to think they are on the same old path is wrong. They got rid of most of the problems in the organization this year. It will probably take another year to start to see any results.

the cubbies are a big market team and the product they put out there this year stunk the joint up--- they have a lot of money to throw around in the off season--- going after a big money guy like sabathia is not the answer--- let's see what the wonder child epstein comes up with....

Just because they lost again doesn't mean northsiders or
Fans should stop buying Chicago Cubs paraphernalia. I will always be a Cubs fan regardless if we can't win a world
Series, I still have hope and won't give up. Go Cubs let's make next year, the year we prove everyone wrong. Signed a Cub Fan for life. A one, a two, a three, take me out to the ball game!

Todays yups can't believe that in the 60s the cubs closed the upper deck on many days and gave us kids a ticket to next days game for flipping up seats for the sweepers. They sucked then and still do. But the ball hawking was great.

Could not agree more. Stop going to the damn games!! I used to be a Cubs season ticket holder. It simply became too expensive to justify the crap on the field. Not too mention being stuck with tickets nobody wants - early April games against some AL loser or late Sept games when they're 50 games out. Season ticket holders have to eat the cost of that toilet paper.

Most of the people at cubs games are from the burbs or transplants from other States. They do not know any better. True north siders stopped going a long time ago.

This northsider will give theo some time. he walked into a shitty situation, hendry had given out lots of stupid contracts and had a bad farm situation. they're blowing the whole thing up, bottoming out. it'll take some time, but it's the right thing to do.

SCC, I lived in Wrigleyville for 12 years, and I can tell you that it's not baseball fans that go to the games. It's an odd breed of individual comprised mainly of alcoholics and/or tourists and suburbanites (same thing to us locals, they are both quite quirky and consistently annoying).

There is an endless stream of both types of people listed above. You can't stem the tide....and the cheaper the tickets are the more they suck them up.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Let me guess. Typical ANGRY Sox fan. Apparently you never sit anywhere in the upper deck at Mobile Phone Park. A disgusting assortment of hammered, toothless, black-eyed hillbillies and ghetto hispanics fighting and groping each other while four seconds of AC/DC blasts between each at bat. Yup, those are some true baseball fans! What a great place to watch a ballgame! No wonder the dump is empty all season!

Can't figure it out???

Look at your own words: How about trying this on for size northsiders - stop going to games. Stop buying Cubs stuff. Spend your money somewhere else.

That's why. There are only so many baseball fans willing to spend money on going to a live game. Unfortunately, too many of Chicago's fans are morons who spend ridiculous amounts of money going to a shithole of a park, to see a pathetic assemblage of excuse making losers who haven't won a world series since michigan avenue was cobblestones traveled by horse buggy.

Evidently, watching a "team" that couldn't post a win against little leaguers these "fans" spend the rest of their money buying every piece of Cubs kitsch crap they can lay their foolish hands on.

As a lifelong Cubs fan, I have not been to a game since they were swept in the playoffs by the Dodgers in 08. Most of the other Cubs fans I know haven't been going to games either. Wrigley is a tourists attraction and that along with the baseball know-nothing yuppies is what keeps that place afloat. I'm not sure if Epstein can turn this disaster around or not but if he doesn't, then $.90 tickets will be the norm.

Blogger 2:51 got it. I couldn't agree more. The sox were in a pennant race and couldn't get enough fans or party people to fill the stands. Detroit fans filled their stadium.
Guess crime in Detroit is under control. Lets get crime under control here before its moves north to cub territory.
The mayor and his over paid administrator disguised as a police superintendent will say never mind that 47 percent south and west siders. They don't count. They are just gang on gang crimes. We didn't have that problem in NYC or NJ so it doesn't exist. So screw the white sox fans cause they are on the south side and are 47 percenters. Whats next? Big bird will stop to exist? Lack of leadership is rampant everywhere.

1226 am, you think the cubs have a plan?

Put the crack pipe down you dumbass. So next year when they have 87 losses you will say they are doing better? I bet you one dollar that THEO will be gone in 3-5 years.

There is nothing the cubs can do to win. As long as the losers support a losing team you will get a losing team.

Lee Elia for president. At least he had the balls to say what was on his mind. You losers don't remember the old days when 3-5 thousand loyal fans came to the park to support the team.

Cubs fans are losers, have been for over a hundred years.

One question, who was the last team in this city to win a world series?
