New Cars

  • It has cool rims, a powerful V6 engine, a gun vault in the trunk and bullet-proof front doors.

    [...]
Otherwise known as the Police Interceptor, the vehicle is produced at the Ford Assembly Plant on Chicago's Far South Side. Since production began in January, police departments across the country have placed orders for 15,500 Interceptors, which comes in both sedan and sports utility versions, Teed said. Canadian law enforcement agencies have placed about 800 orders.

Thanks to the orders, Ford added 1,200 jobs, roughly doubling employment, in May at the assembly plant. The Interceptors are replacing the Crown Victoria, which have been used by law enforcement for about two decades. Production of that model ended last year.
We don't understand this part though:
  • Chicago has ordered 185 Interceptors,  including 132 of the sport utility vehicles and 53 sedans. They are expected to hit the streets in November and early next year. In total, the city plans to purchase 500 Police Interceptors at a cost of at least $15 million over five years.
We thought the SUV experiment was deemed a failure?  And only 53 sedans?  Are these going to the exempt staff or something?  It's early in the contract so maybe they'll buy more the sedans on the back end?

Both of these vehicles are offered in front and all-wheel drive. Even if we only get FWD, they'll still be better in the snow than the Crown Vic or the Tahoe.

Per fleet the sedans are not fit to be 10-4 cars so they will only be used as supervisor cars. The sedans are too small for two officers when a computer is in the car.. Even smaller than the impalas.. Patrol will get the explorer interceptor vehicle which is equipped with all wheel drive but is extremly slow. So only sgts and dets will see the interceptor sedan

The SUV interceptors are suppose to be great cars. Instead of the Tahoe debacle, they are going to have standard awd, which should be a little better in the Chicago winter. They are also suppose to handle a lot better than the Tahoe and be more efficient with fuel.

HA doubling employment. Nice fluff piece for the elections. Perfect timing. Watch for the layoffs shortly.

Want to know what's driving those auto sales? Do a Google on Sub-prime auto loans. They are doing the same thing that was done in the mortgage market. Anyone that walks into a car dealer that can fog a mirror gets a loan and the interest rates can be like 18%. Of course the lender doesn't have to worry about holding the loan until it's paid off right? The loans will be bundled and sold as investment like they did in housing.

This makes the bailout of GM and Chrysler by Obama look like a genius.

It reminds me of the vendor financing that a company called Lucent had done. Sales looked awesome as the company made loans to get rid of excess inventory. However the whole thing fell apart as the loans were being made to non-worthy creditors.

Another GM bailout is already in the hopper.

That's how great these companies are and the management is. One corporate bailout after another.

But who knows. Maybe the bullet proof doors wont fall off after a couple months like the seats in the airlines are lately.

The Tahoe SUVS are/were a bad idea because they are rear wheel drive and based on a truck frame with a limited slip/posi-traction rear end. Very short sighted to give a rear wheel drive, locking differential SUV to people that aren't race car drivers, especially in the rain or snow, zero training. Also please note Tahoes do not have traction control like the Crown Vics do. An open differential on a Crown Vic combined with their weight and traction control make them probably some of the best rear wheel drive cars in the snow/rain. The Crown Vics Chicago ordered of course were as cheap as possible, hence no locking differential.

The new Police Interceptor, the SUV or sedan, share the exact same frame. Just as the current civilian Ford Explorer and Ford Taurus share the same frame. The Police Interceptor versions are simply slightly modified versions of these cars. All major components of both the sedan and SUV are the same. They share everything but appearance.

In addition, both are now front wheel, or four wheel drive. Chicago will not buy four wheel drive, of course. Front wheel drive is easier to control: generally the weight of the motor over the wheels provides more traction. Traction control, vehicle stability control, all that fancy stuff is standard. The handling and performance between the SUV and sedan is almost identical, I would be much more concerned if I was a highway cop and wanted a 4WD sedan with the 365hp ecoboost motor, which, of course, we will not get.

Crown Vics are the most durable cars on the planet, even though our cars are so beat down we hate them. They are old school and they work. I suppose we shall see if a new front wheel drive system can handle it. A weak front wheel drive system is why we broke the Impalas quick. The interiors will get torn up in a matter of weeks, no matter what they give us; and a PDT will be missing from time to time.

The SUV experiment with Tahoes that were 2 wheel drive and were evaluated as insufficient for anything but utility work is over. The SUV being made in Chicago is specifically made for police work and offers (though it remains to be seen if CPD orders them) four wheel drive pursuit rated SUVs. The SUV is supposed to be rather cool.

The sedan and the SUV are built on the same platform. About 40% parts commonality. They are modified Taurus' and Explorers. Explorer is essentially a car based cross-over these days.

185 cars is nothing. In the past the department bought about 600-800 cars a year, but in recent years that has changed. Since they stopped making the CV in 2011, there were none to be had this year and there hasn't been a shipment of Tahoes that I have seen. So apparently we didn't buy any new cars this year at all. 185 new cars won't even replace the number of cars that were junked this year. This is the same plan as the hiring scheme. We will go without and then tell everyone we are hiring/buying some new cops/cars. Then everyone goes ooh,ahh and the smoke and mirrors commences.

If the SUV's have front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, they aren't a failure. The damn Tahoes with those racing tires and rear wheel drive don't work well in the climate of the upper midwest. They'd be fine in Arizona, but not here. I'm tired of feeling like I'm sitting on the damn floor of these police cars and climbing up to get out of them. If you are more than 5 feet tall and 110 pounds all your gear hits the side of the car and the steering wheel as you try to pull yourself out. The last of the Crown Vics feel even smaller than the earlier models and they have that damn lumbar support in the seat that won't go down. My back is killing me whenever I drive the damn thing. I'm sick of having to take nearly 30 seconds to remove myself from those damn cars.

There is a 1 hour, pretty entertaining show on the new Ford Interceptor you can find on the history channel on demand, or possibly online. There was an episode on it on the New American version of the program "Top Gear." They drive the new Ford Interceptor (which I believe is a ford fusion and the SUV is a ford edge) as well as the dodge charger police car and the new version of the Chevy caprice police car which is coming out again next year. Now on the show they drive the top end version of each of the cars which I am almost positive we won't actually get. The only difference being the engine which on the Ford has something like 365 horsepower and all wheel drive. Other than that though we are getting the exact same car. I personally believe its gonna be better. Quick stats: They put over 40 lbs of sheet metal in the front doors so when you get out you really can use it as an effective shield. It has awd which will be safer for everyone once we get used to it. The rear doors open an extra 15 degrees so its easier to stuff people inside. Even without the top end engine package it's still fast, and more nimble for driving through the city. Finally it gets way better gas mileage. On the negative side it is smaller than the crown Vic so bigger guys are not gonna like that. The SUV version comes from the ford edge crossover so it will be roomier but not anywhere near as big or cumbersome as the Tahoe. Ultimately I believe these are gonna be better. Even more important though is that these cars are gonna be made in the US by a US company and besides the Police buying them Ford is gonna sell a lot of these. A US company that makes smaller more fuel efficient cars is going to do well and help our economy. Sure there is a practical need for something bigger, tougher and safer for hauling the kids but every 2 car family would do well to have 1 of each to save $. I love my truck but between the wife and I we have a truck and a little car.

Evil, out of control SUVs"

Obama: Think about ditching those gas-guzzling SUVs
By Andrew Restuccia - 04/21/11 04:02 PM ET

President Obama urged the public Thursday to think about trading in their SUVs for more fuel-efficient vehicles, arguing that gas-guzzlers keep the country dependent on foreign oil.

“When you do decide to buy a new car, think about that we’re putting a whole bunch of money into the pockets of some folks who do not like us at all,” Obama said in remarks at a town-hall meeting in Reno, Nev., referring to oil-producing countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Obama noted, however, that not all Americans can afford to buy a new car.

Obama to America: Sell Your SUVs, You Fat Refrigerated Slobs

By: John Hayward
4/7/2011 11:19 AM

President Obama is brimming with useful advice for those who can’t figure out how to survive in the marvelous new America he has created. This goes all the way back to the 2008 campaign, when his advice for dealing with the fuel shortage his critics accurately predicted he would cause was as follows:

“Making sure your tires are properly inflated is a simple thing. But could we save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!”

Further wisdom along these lines was dispensed at a different campaign event, when Obama told us that in the dilapidated sustainable shack on a hill he envisioned, “we can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees all the time, and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK.”

thats because they are sleeping in the hole or not doing anything during the tour.. so the room for sleeping and the radio to put you to sleep would come in very handy... in other cases, if your going after bad guys and wanna keep a low profile and get somewhere quick and get to a job fast you want the crown vic. If your driving lights and sirens in a tahoe in city traffic going faster than 60 it gets very dangerous in that thing. If your only going 60 in the crown vic then your just a slow driver.....

It was simply the best. Flip the air cleaner lid and an instant 20hp increase. It had the police package. Out run, out perform any thing we had. It was a muscle car. Rear wheel drive with positive traction. The best. Thank you Jane Bryne.

"1960? Blue and white"?

alright wise-guy... yeah they took the 1960 model cars, some of which they took delivery of in fall of '59 and had them repainted from black to blue & white starting late '60 into the '61 model year. A few '60 & '61cars still had red mars lights.

anybody remember the beacon on the roof at 1121?

"Crown Vics are the most durable cars on the planet, even though our cars are so beat down we hate them"

Wrongo,I'll take an 86 Box Chevy over that crown vic piece of crap.

Are you frigging kidding me!!!

The 70's DODGE MONACO was the best!

Made from a melted down Sherman Tank. It had the turning radius of a battleship and some had a 440 Magnum engine that you could turn the air cleaner cover over to increase the air flow to the carburetor. They had bench seats and no air conditioning.

Their best moment, check this out

We could be given the Luxury of our choice, with a cloaking device that has auto pilot and X-ray cameras. Coppers will still find something to complain about. Geez

Rahm ought to be riding around in one. How can the mayor of a city ride around in a Texas made Tahoe when an equally capable Explorer is made right here in our fair city?

The Explorer isn't made by Government Motors.

BOO HOO, It doesn't matter what they give the young cry babies on thisjob, they will just tear them up, there is absolutely no , zero, nadda accountability for anything on the Chicago Police Dept. regarding equipment. We have Sgts. who cry that they don't have the time to inspect cars at the beginning and end of tours, why is that? because they are inside sucking up to the W/C and finding out who is taking an early Duck, Besides that the new Tauras Squad car is too small for 2 man u nits, I know I sat in one and they are now in the process of buying new PDT's to fit in theses cars. the others are just too too big, But likeI said, the kids will just destroy them unless things change.

Do you SWAT guys do anything but bitch? We are in the districts getting our asses handed to us and you are bitching about having a take home car with 164,000 miles. Must be nice to work out, train and bitch all the time. You SWAT guys are useless to us on the front lines of the war. You guys deserve a paycheck and you should feel guilty about getting that.

SWAT do us a favor and stop bitching. No one feels sorry for you hair gells!!!! At least you have a take home car. What happens to you guys when you go over there? Is part of being On SWAT looking like a Blackhawk catalog and bitching all the time? When I was on HBT we didn't have the cool uniforms, rifles or training. Suck it up with your complaining about miles on your take home car. You sound like a bunch of idiots.

To the driving over 60 dude: Its just a matter of time before you're a statistic. No job is worth getting mangled. Even in a 10-1 you're not helping anyone if you wreck before you get there. And I'm speaking from experience, been in a bad one having you're attitude of being indestructible. Now I know better.

how about getting some smart cars as take home cars?

relatively cheap. don't need all the police paraphernalia for a take home car.

easy to park.

Speak for yourself, you tool! What part don't you understand about staying off the blog with Swat issues? I have to apologize to my brothers and sisters that read this blog who have it far worse than we do in swat. This person does not represent most of my coworkers in swat. This person really only needs this car to fulfill his ego and hide his insecurities of a man. Based off his several recent post and me being a long time reader of the blog and sometimes poster I believe this person to be one of the new guys who just made the team or not even a swat member at all and just a shit starter. Either way I apologize for their crybaby antics. To the poster, if you don't like me calling you a tool, crybaby or questioning your masculinity you're more than welcome to come see me in person. In the mean time stay off the blog you tool box!!!!! Signed , Greg Insley unit 353 swat
