Tweet the Guns Away

Way to look like you're doing something, when in fact, you are doing nothing at all:
  • The city of Chicago is asking residents with ideas on how to get illegal guns off the streets to share their thoughts – in 140 characters or fewer on Twitter.

The initiative is part of Chicago Ideas Week, an annual forum for innovators, artists, scientists and others to share ideas and inspire action.

Those who think they know how to cut off the flow of illegal guns into Chicago– which has strict gun control laws– are being asked to tweet suggestions with the hashtag #whatifchicago.

The best submitted ideas will be debated at an Oct. 11 panel discussion.
Of course, the comments are where the entertainment lies. Most of the ones we saw encourage sensible gun ownership and law abiding citizens be allowed some form of Concealed Carry.  Forty-nine other states can't be wrong.

That gun turn in program is a joke. People from southern states drive up to Chicagi and turn in rusted and broken guns for cash.

Wanna get illegal guns off the street? Hire more cops and let them do more traffic stops. Simple and easy!!

The mighty Groupon Corp. The company that busted out investors out of their money. The initial stock price of Groupon was around $32 a share less then 52 weeks ago. Today it's about $4 a share a loss just shy of 90% of your money.

Now that's the kind of ideas guy you want to hook your wagon too eh? The stock chart says it all

Since this is the second year does anyone know what great ideas came out of the first meeting? Maybe it was that city sticker design contest?

I don't see any recognition or reward for the people coming up with the ideas either. Just want to take them and run. Everyman for themselves.

This is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard of. Everyone knows that in order to solve the gun violence problem you need at LEAST 200 characters.

I still say "Gladiator Wars" held in Soldier Field. Have the gangs go through an elimination round or several, last man standing wins. Then the playoffs. I see a win win for us. No trial and money waisted on incareration, useless gang members eliminated by other useless gang members, we can start policing the city from scratch.

I know, but I can dream can't I.

computer issue?

Every weapon (firearm) recovered and in custody at ERPS that has ever used in commission of crime has been checked for ownership and registration.

This gun check information has also been recorded on all pertinent reports of the crime.
IE: clear not registered or listing the registration.

How many weapons that have been recovered in the past 20 years have been legally registered by the actual owner (still alive)?

Compare this number against the number of weapons checked that are listed not in file, lost/stolen, sreial number defaced un readable, etc.

Would there be a profound imbalance? One suggesting that legal registration is actually a moot issue and has nothing to do with current crime?

My initial guess is that yes, it would be obvious, gun laws are nothing more than excessive taxations on law abiding citizens.
LAWS AND REGULATIONS MEAN NOTHING TO CRIMINALS.

Maybe I am wrong in my assumption.
The data exists, check it out.

Hire more police. Hold the judges responsible for truth in sentencing and liable for failures to protect citizens from repeat dangerous offenders.

Here, tongue in cheek, I'd suggest
dumping most current politicians and starting from scratch with new found honesty.

you can type a million
the problem is still there
a lot of guns come from break-ins of homes a few do come straw buyers
a the article pointed in the slum times
they tried to blame chucks guns for the voilence
( they tried to say 1 in 5 guns found in chicago came from his gun shop) i'm sure those gun shops try to keep up with who is buying but some one will slip thru
the simple answer is ENFORCE the laws on stolen or illegally sold guns not NEW laws
the problem is too that judges and atates attnernys let everyone slide
( I loved the gun buyback incident where the $ went for a youth shooting camp) remeber rahmn it was "for the children"
and thay had the nerve to cry about it
when you find a gun that is not legal throw the book at them
though it should be done on a case to case basis
if a homeowner shoots a robber in his house then i would think that is a "migating" circumstance like walter mondale said
gun bans don't deter criminals,.. gun bans ATTRACT criminals

Hey 12:20 - It's actually more than that, some gun clubs (which teach kids how to be responsible gun owners) turn in rusted & broken guns as the fundraiser for their clubs. They also use the money to lobby for CC!

See? The program DOES do some good.

Chicago Ideas Week.

Lemme get this straight. They're going to round up 200 Hollywood and corporate types and they are going to share their ideas via various lectures?

Pardon me, but if these are successful people, and their ideas that they are going to present have any worth, why would they give them out for a lousy $15 dollar ticket?

On the other hand if they are seeking new ideas from the attendees so that they can steal them and monetize them why would anyone in their right mind give them out for free or even discuss them without a nondisclosure agreement signed?

Has anyone, anyone seen or read anything from last years Chicago Idea Week that demonstrates the value taken from the seminars?

There's a lot of media fluff even a Time mag (co-sponsor)piece with softball questions to Rahm for last years event. But I haven't seen any stories that demonstrate this is worth wild time.

(4) Send the gun thugs to the slammer for 30-40 years.

Actually voters like you are part of the problem. The dems you talk about think just like you, don't vote for any reppublicans even if they're better than the dem candidate. If you think you'd enjoy life more with all republicans in office you should start reading more than the newspaper when you're on the can. Neither of the parties are loyal to you. Obama has more money than you and so does Romney. They'd much rather have a beer with each other in their social time than you or me.

This is off topic and perhaps should be on a diffent thread but does anyone know that the great McDrunk who is in San Diego at the IACP to represent the Chicago Police Department has been partying it up with his "good ole boys", so much that he only made ONE of the classes that he was scheduled to attend all week. Meanwhile his "boys" were carried code 49 while other bosses from Chicago attended and paid their own way, buring their own time to attend.

Your problem is, you're only thinking in terms of what OTHER people can do that affect your life.

Take charge of yourself! Stop being a passive victim!

Stop selling dope at your corners, and you'll never be bothered by having to look at another white suburbanite again!

I can't complain. I turned in several replica guns when the program first started & got $100 each, more than I paid for them!

I got turned away at one site. The cop there ID'ed it as a replica. I left, went to another site & got my $100!

Used the money to buy ammo.

Like SSI & LINK, the program works if you know how to work the program.
