CA 49

The major papers and TV stations seem to ignore the upcoming ballot referendum over CA 49, aka “HCA49” and “HJRCA49."  We got the entire text in a mailing today addressed to "voter."  We've also gotten a few e-mails by organizations purporting to support the amendment.

The FOP has recommended a "No" vote and we concur.

Get registered and get to the voting booth.  Last day of registration is 09 October and most Districts/Units have someone who can register you or update a lapsed registration.

Media Black-Out on this SCC...

There were a couple of comments on the scum-times article about the feebs coming in to sniff at disabled P.O.'s...

They're running with that to distract from the subterfuge regarding CA 49 being on the ballot.

Next Con-Con is in 2028 so Rahm and Madigan have to figure out how to steal pension monies from muni & state employees to cover-up the crminally negligent underfunding.

Teachers contract approved by 80%. Now the mayor can turn the hatchet men loose and start shutting down schools.

There's needs to be a serious push by the FOP, Local 2, AFSCME, Teamsters, etc. for the public to vote no on this as well.

Mike Shields: Quit sitting on your duff pushing around secretary's and step up to the plate here.

I hope we aren't depending on officers being registered to vote and actually coming out on election day to vote against this amendment/law/initiative or whatever it is.

Way less than half of all officers are even registered to vote. FOP's own numbers. Take maybe 30% of that already small number as how many really vote and you will realize that we as a group really have very little voting power.

I've been a deputy registrar empowered to register people to vote on the spot. Take a guess of how many officers I have registered to vote?If you guessed Zero you would be right. And if an officer is not registered to vote, they won't admit it. Something about not wanting to get called for jury duty.

Lot's of luck.

it seems the amendment requires 3/5 vote to INCREASE benefits

I saw nothing about giving them any power to decrease benefits

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so

No one seems to get it. If this passes it TAKES AWAY the NON IMPAIRMENT PROTECTION in the ILL constitution that protects all our pensions. If it passes they can diminish your pension. This is one of the most important issues affecting us and no one seems to care.

TWO THINGS:

1. There were two unions that were in Springfield and voiced objection to the Amendment. FOP and AFSCME. FOP actually testified at a committee hearing, so STFU!

2. You are being cited by the apostrophe police for being stupid. Please repeat 6th grade and learn the difference between plural and possessive. Thank you.

I received a mailing from Jesse White on the topic; however, no where did it mention "CA 49". It's a “Proposed Amendment to Add Section 5.1 to Article XIII of the Illinois Constitution". On the second page it says “Section 5.1 – Pension and Retirement Benefit Increases”.

SCC, please run a reminder about this VERY important Bill right before the election. I urge every one of us to use Facebook/Twitter/email/ any means necessary to reach every friend and family member in IL and let them know that by voting yes to this, they will be drastically effecting our pensions.

The way it's worded, even voting no doesn't mean they won't do it, but it just might be a little tougher.

Thanks! Stay Safe.

Where are the radio, TV and newspaper ads against this?

Why isn't FOP on all the local radio & TV talk shows about this?

Why haven't we heard of this before now?

Early voting started 22 Oct, how many people voted for this just because they did not know any better?

Yes, the Rahm/Madigan Media has been deliberately quiet on this underhanded attack
on our pensions and benefits.
There is still time for us to organize our brothers and sisters --not only Chicago
however, other departments as well.
MOBILIZE TO RALLY AGAINST. For an issue so important to our future, where are the protests, the buses to Springfield?
We need media coverage on a rally. There are hundreds of thousands of us who will be affected--Firefighters and Police Officers in the entire state of Illinois. Add family to those members of protestors, and we are a giant.

All my civilian friends/family were clueless to the fact that our social security benefits are cut in half because we are government employees (thank you Rostenkowski - burn in hell you bastard)

So now, they want it both ways? UNACCEPTABLE!
Thank you Second City Cop for getting this info out.
I mass emailed out the info, and I have printed out the info from
Second City Cop on this to hand out at my upcoming Condo Association meeting.

There is more we can do here and not just complain to each other on a police blog.
We have to do this ourselves. Is anyone with me on this? Ideas?

Let's not only spread the word on "CA49", but target the politicians that introduce the bills, and than target the politicians that vote for any anti union legislation.

Any changes should begin at the bargaining table.

The deadbeat city must pay what they owe first and we will go from there.

When I see the recommendations for voting in the newsletter, I repeatedly see the names of people running for reelection that are on record as being anti police and anti union.

I don't care what party they represent. Vote out the dogs.

I would rather vote for the tree outside my house than vote for Rahm. Yet he will probably be recommended when it comes time for the Mayoral Election. As soon as he gets the chance to screw us, he is going to pile drive us. He is salivating to get the chance.

I no longer live in Illinois, so excuse what may be a supid question. This peoposal appears to limit pwnsion enhancements, but those are guaranteed by the Illinois Constittion. Ialways believed that it required a Constitutional Ammendment to change another.

it definitely does make it more difficult - it requies 3/5, currently I beleive all that is required is 51%. It makes it more difficult ot increase our pensions - it has nothing to do with raises does it? And I don't see any language about diminishing our pensions.

I've read the actual proposed amendment. There's no way to interpret it to allow cutting pensions. It's very clearly phrased to cover increases only. Even if you could do some fancy interpreting of the words, there's still the non-impairment clause in the constitution and this doesn't repeal that.

Overall, I would say don't worry about this.

But I'm voting against it on principle: it's Madigan's baby.
