Marine Unit Again?!?!
- A car reported missing when a Lincolnwood man disappeared in 2001 was pulled from the Chicago River midday Saturday, after the Chicago Police Marine Unit located it using new sonar equipment, authorities said.
Authorities will have to use DNA testing to determine if the bones found today are those of Michael Jansson, who was 21 when he disappeared early on March 9, 2001, but the vehicle identification number of the car found matches the one that was reported missing when Jansson disappeared, police said.
These guys aren't just heroes - they're like super-duper heroes.

Heroes? How so? They stumbled upon the car because of new sonar equipment. A car submerged with a body inside for over a decade. In this instance, they're the equivalent of a dude finding a watch 4 feet beneath the sand with a new metal detector. This is nothing more than a recovery mission due to happenstance.
I hope your joshin' SCC.
I like how it took 11 years to find a guy two blocks from where he went missing.

I get a CHUBBY every time I read about them on SCC!!!!!!!
Its amazing that with millionsof dollars of equipment it only took 11 years to find the guy. I could have done it in a day with a $100 row boat and bass pro fishing sonar.
I just adore strong men in their wetsuits. They glisten so nicely. I heard that they tried to get their C.O. to dive in one of those wetsuits, but all the medals on it made it sink.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
McGyvers.
Is anyone a marine biologist???? The sea was angry that day my friend.........
Did they give him CPR?
Bid deal. What else do these guys have to do? In winter.
They only went out there when now retired Sgt. Jeff Peraino A/3 asked them to check. Jeff was reviewing old missings and found that this guy went missing in the same area as some broad from a couple years back. Rolled into the river while drunk. And on his last days working.
Nice job Jeff. You will be truly missed
Lets all go down and celebrate at our favorite watering hole. And when one of our stupervisors gets too blottoed, watch out for that sucker punch! OOOps, wrong era. My bad! Where in the hell is Mark Brown when ya need him?
What tool in the marine unit keeps notifying the media every time they do something. Stop being a glory hound and just do your job!
Sounds 'fishy' to me said...
I heard the 'Sup' ordered them to throw him back in like an undersized fish, claiming he's 'not a keeper.'
Then he recanted and said to merely 'keep him on ice' until next year to keep the stats under 500.
Chuck Norris aint got nothing on these guys!!
that's what i said these guys are the apple of the streetlightmarksman's eye like Chicken Man they're everywhere
If they keep up the good press, McNutty will get rid of them. How dare they interfear with his TV camera time!
I am not in the unit ( no clout ) but I do dive.
In the waters of the harbors or river you can see your flashlight about 12 inched in front of your mask.
Searching for a car when you don't know the location is very difficult. Also you are fighting all that gunk down there

The river was checked right after he went missing, since it made sense he could easily have driven off the road there. It used to be accessible, no barriers.
Search was negative, but the water was black - no visibility. Thank the new equipment for this find.
Was Stacy Peterson in the trunk?
Another car found same place where the model drove in last year??? Huh.. Law suit settle on that one yet?? Then this guy gets pulled out?? Must be a place where cars just seems to drive off the edge for some time now... Wonder why they waited to pull this car out?? wonder if they waited till the other law suit settled...
Just like to wonder from time to time..
A lunaic walks into a school with the intention of killing Inocent Children, But is stopped and killed by the gym teacher a Marine. This is the Story I want to hear.Every school has teachers that are Soldiers that must be used in the future this is the only option. We as Police officers cant waste minutes getting to the scene.
What? Did I hear that right? New equipment? Not for a unit that is under scrutiny for budget cuts..
A Member of the Marine Unit taught a Dolphin how to swim.

Get the facts straight! The Marine Unit was told where to look by an SVU Det and Sgt. It was those two guys who figured out where the 11 yr missing car might be. The Marine unit just did what they were asked to do . And FYI it is a Death Investigation
The Marine Unit just found the man on the grassy knoll and the man in the moon. They truly are amazing!
Heroes? Oh pleeeeeze!
Didn't they find Milt Pappas' wife decades after she rolled her Cutlass into a suburban pond.
Diver Dan from Ray Raynor tells the Marine Unit all the info.He hangs around the 31st harbor and has a office under the sea.

Check the Sun Times Mark Brown article archives...seems to be an epidemic of horn tooters in that unit.
O.T. but wow !! our brothers from NYPD get alot more than we do. this is from the NYPD website:
NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly swears in 1,231 police recruits
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The makeup of the city's 1,231 newest police recruits is diverse: They come from more than 50 countries, served in the military, were once school safety or traffic enforcement agents and hold bachelor's or advanced degrees.
They were sworn-in today by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly during a ceremony in Queens College.
"No matter where you're from, no matter what you did previously, whether this is your second career or your first job out of college, you have precious skills and valuable life experience to contribute to our mission," Kelly told the recruits before administering their oath of office.
"You've made a terrific decision to join the New York City Police Department, a team that has surpassed all expectations, reducing crime to record lows, defending against terrorism, and forging cooperative relationships with the people we serve."
Approximately one in five were born overseas, hailing from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East.
Among them are 72 who served in the military, including 38 who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan; 32 who were promoted from the Police Cadet Corps; 23 who were traffic enforcement agents, and seven who were School Safety Agents.
More than one-third of the class, 459 recruits, have earned bachelor's or advanced degrees.
They enter the Police Academy on Monday and will graduate in December upon completing their training.

Carole Pappas, 42, went missing on Saturday, 11 September 1982, which was her birthday. Her car, a white and burgundy Buick Regal, bearing license plate number GN 6357, disappeared with her.
Near five years later, on Saturday, 08 August 1987, the car was found in a Wheaton pond located four blocks from the Pappas home. Her remains were discovered in the front seat.
The pond was nine feet deep and secreted the car for the near five years, but the vehicle was exposed when the pond was being drained so workmen could rework the shoreline.
It seems Ms. Pappas missed a turn in the dark and drove into the pond. Within days of her disappearance, Milt Pappas, her husband, volunteered to take a lie detector test. He passed.

You mea, they only went out there the THIRD time when Jeff asked. We've had them out there twice before, but before they had this new sonar device.
Who's on that unit ?... Seal Team 6.New York still has a handle on it, considering they have to work for that asshole bloomberg.
A saw a Marine Unit Officer catch a 30 pound Coho Salmon with a needle and thread.
