Rahm Finds Another $100 Million

  • Plans are in the works for a $300 million, 12,000-seat arena for DePaul University’s basketball teams to be built near downtown Chicago, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce plans this week for DePaul University at McCormick Place – a proposal that will call on $100 million in taxpayer dollars. The team currently plays in the 17,500 seat AllState Arena, which opened in 1980.

There are also plans to build two mega hotels on the property in the hopes of aggressively growing convention and meeting business in Chicago.

The men’s basketball team finished 11-21 this season, have just six conference wins in the past three season and have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2004.
A $100 million gift from Chicago taxpayers for a private Catholic university? While the city is pleading poverty and in the midst of contentious negotiations with how many labor organizations?

This also brings to the fore the land-based casino proposals because, let's face it - an 11-21 DePaul basketball team just isn't that big a draw.

Actually this may make sense being next to McCormick Place. They need a decent sized stadium there to draw certain types of conventions. Think evangelicals and the like.

Of course if Daley hadn't given in to the preservationist assholes a new Soldier Field could have been built from scratch with a dome.

Then there wouldn't be a need for a new 12,000 seat stadium.

Oh well. At least we always have the Vanecko case.

Get a load of this piece of trash which I imagine is published in response to unemployment in the city and Rahm's job creation performance.

Illinois adds tech jobs ahead of national rate
State's tech sector saw 1.6 percent job growth in 2012

Yaaay..huh, look at that -- we are beating the national average woo-hoo!!

No mention there how Illinois stacks-up to other states tho.

To find that out we go over to crains.

Illinois beats U.S., lags neighbors in tech job gains

I don't know about you but I get totally different impressions from those two stories.

First off, like the crime is down story, we have to find some small subsection of the job market that shows a lil postive growth and hype it. We're talking about 4~5% of the job market here is high tech.

And I found this amusing detail in the Trib story..

The Cyberstates report covers all 50 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The report derives data for full-year 2012 from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers covering the first two quarters of 2012.

Why????

Of course we can't count the tech jobs from the later part of 2012. That's when companies like Motorola Mobility laid off about 600 workers here. Abbott Labs had a huge layoff in 2012. The first part of this year US Cellular is laying off 600 or so..

This made me want to fact check even more.

The data showed that tech workers both across the country and in Illinois collect much higher compensation than the average for private-sector workers. In Illinois, the average annual wage in the tech industry was $87,223, compared with $50,823 for the private sector. This differential in pay was even more pronounced at the national level, where tech workers made an average of $93,772 versus $47,404 for private sector workers.

The $87,223 in average annual wages for Illinois tech workers was an increase of 1.1 percent from 2011.

Yep this is not MEDIAN wages presented it's average. Ya throw in the CEO's wage and few exec's and it looks like everyone is rolling in the dough. It's how "averages" work.

Anyways that was then and this is now. People entering the workforce are not getting $80~90K. They get $50~60K so that the higher paid can be laid off.

These -
Top paying jobs for class of 2011 are the high tech jobs and the starting wages are no where near what the other stories lead the readers to believe.

In fact with them declaring a 1.1% increase over the prior year, at that rate how many years will they have to work to make $80~90K?

Yep, so Illinois is blowing away the US ha! when you "AVERAGE" things. But neighboring states are blowing away Illinois. You wouldn't know that by just reading the Trib tho.

We won't even ask the question of how many foreign H1-B visa holders took those jobs away from US citizens because of claimed job skills shortages.

Rahmulan spin works like this. You make use of your propaganda ministry to announce that you're going to start charging churches for water to show how you're cracking down. Then you backdoor some deals and bada bing, you got the taxpayers to foot the bill for $100 million more for that same church's sports team.

The mayor finds $100 Million for a useless unneeded basketball arena and then throws thousands of city retirees under the bus taking away their medical coverage and putting them all on worthless Obama Care. Just shows where our politicians place their loyalty. The Evil Raccoon Eyed maor has to hand out plenty of contracts to connected vendors with his reelection only two years away. And those two hotels he wants next to the new arena will be paid for with TIF Funds and long term tax breaks. No wonder this town is broke and in decline.

Why can't DePaul just continue to play their 17 games a year at All State Arena in Rosemont? Why waste $300 Million to build a new sports facility that will be underused. $$$$$$. Money to hand out to connected contractors and vendors. Politicians need those "donations" from these very same contractors to stay in power.

Maybe citywide basketball teams can compete at the new stadium and be sponsored by major advertisers like Coors, Anheuser-Busch, and others for the best 3-man team.

Maybe in the winter they can use it for indoor volleyball teams and "bring the beach inside". How about Bikini Volleyball?

They will be able to use it - don't worry. Just another jewel in the lakefront crown of Chicago.

Blah....Blah.....Blah.... nothing has changed in Chicago.

Plus, they should name it after some great Chicago leader.

Todd Stroger Stadium - that's got a good ring to it. Wasting money? This would be a perfect monument for bureacracy: Stroger Stadium.

Maybe they can get Herbie to do a mural inside.

To 5/15/2013 01:37:00 AM

You start to hit the nail on the head as far as tech jobs in Illinois. There might be tech jobs and some growth - but how many are being filled with non-citizen H-1Bs?

For those in the public sector who aren't to aware of what an H-1B is, think of it this way: Why pay cops six figures (with overtime) when we can hire cops from different countries like India, Poland, Russia and others for a fraction of what we are paying out today?

Hire H-1Bs at $28,000 a year with no real benefits (AND DEFINITELY NO PENSION PLAN) and look how much money the city will save.

This is exactly what happened in the private sector and you have citizens (who are the ones paying property taxes) lose their high-paying jobs to foreigners who are brought here not for filling any skill shortage, they are being brought here to lower labor costs.

I know several friends who were making in the low 90s to $150K and are now making about $40K.

Your wages and benefits package cannot be sustained because the people (who are still working) aren't making what they used to.

You cannot say - so what, pay me my salary and pension because its "guaranteed" by the State Constitution, the money isn' t there anymore.

Automatic 3% raises have to become a thing of the past. Who to blame? All the corporations who brought in all this cheap foreign labor - including Motorola and Sears - both companies getting $100,000,000 from Quinn to retain them in Illinois - even if they don't really employ that many Illinois citizens.

Keep voting Democrat!

So rahm drops the bomb on refineries, no health care for you.

To all of you officers with less then ten years on the job, GET OUT NOW! Actively seek a job outside of Illinois.
This city, county, state will eat you alive.

The quality of life as a city employee is awful.
I'm not talking about the job it self, but all of the collateral damage from being a prisoner in Chicago.

High taxes on everything, hidden taxes, ie. parking tickets, red-light cameras, soon to be added speed cameras, etc. Mostly a poor education system, and the ever present gloom of violence throughout the city.

I was advised by outsiders looking in, to not take this job 25+ years ago and I didn't heed the advice. I do regret it.

Neither rahm or dick have respect for or care about city employees, especialy the police. They both act as if all city employees should be grateful that either of them allowed any of us to work for the city.

I will leave when I can but do to financial needs and the changing retirement picture him here for a few more years. I will do my job to the best of my ability but I will no longer do anything more then what's in front of me.

Citizens, if you find all of your city services slipping in quality. Then please go ask rahm about it at the opening of the maggie daly park or the ground breaking ceramony for DePaul's partially tax-payer-funded arena.
Maybe he can explain it.

Daley stumbles around with money spilling out of his pockets while looking at da twees an' da boidies... He stops, mumbles, shits himself and giggles about it... His security detail runs up with a rolling adult sized diaper changing station. Sixty seconds later he's good as new...

Yet these dirty motherfuckers say nothing about the BILLIONS in bullshit entitlements that the catered to constituencies get.

Gotta keep THEM happy so they don't get pissed and start running around lighting shit on fire that belongs to members of Rahm & Co.
and Daley Inc.

They're ALL ABOUT making sure no one can fight them back so that they can continue to steal.

Especially from people who have sacrificed 1/3 to 1/2 a lifetime of service to this God-Forsaken place...

Rahm was doing his Barney Fife imitation in front of the graduating class of 100.

Blah, blah, blah, crime is down (from the record highs, big deal) you see you got your police and your parenting and that gives you prevetion. then you got your penaties..blah,,blah, blah..HA..

Then Joe Walsh on WIND says today HEY RAHM!!! I got another "PEE" FOR YA IT'S CALLED PRIORITIES AND YOURS ARE ALL SCREWED UP. $100 million for a basketball stadium when we're broke!

Got to get those kids as close to the new casino as possible so you can suck them in!

IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN!

These fucking maroons think it will be a bundle of "savings." Open the arena, get the hotels, the casino and hit em all with increased taxes then hit the dipshit tourists and suburbanites with taxes, fees, and you name it. One hand washes the other, just like everything else in this town. Little emperor Commodus is just creating spectacle for the sheeple.

The NYPD is to take no action other than disperse possible crowds of gawkers.

I'm a former Chicago Business Owner and city dweller who moved my business and family from Chicago to NW Indiana four years ago. I have two family members on the job (Indiana State Troopers) and enjoy your blog very much. Keep up the good work.

Here's the way I see it. Richie Daley was a shrewd thief who stole under the disguise of appearing to be a bumbling, likeable mayor.
Rahm on the other hand tells you he is going to fuck you beforehand and then everyone is suprised that he does what he says.

The $100 million Rahm won't spend on police pensions and puts into a dubious project is just the beginning. What do you think is going to happen in three years when Barry Obama comes to Rahm looking for a place for his presidential library and needs $300+ million, all under the disguise of community redevelopment. Payback is a bitch, but Rahm won't be the one to take it on the chin, the taxpayers will. Glad I got out.

No description of offenders on Michigan avenue on 10:00 pm news channel 7 , incident occurred during crowded streets at lunch time on the Mag Mile

10 young men surrounded an elderly lady , took her expensive jewelry , cash from her purse .
no witnesses

anyone want to bet offenders might be former cps students from a democratic family or could offenders be 10 young men from downstate republican families

last time I watch channel 7

Who the fuck would want to go from Lincoln Park campus all the way to mcp to watch the Big East doormat get manhandled. Ponsetto is a retarded cunt. At least Loyola built their gym right on campus.

Hey SCC, The only reason this 100 million dollar stadium will be built is because of all the land the insiders bought up thinking Daley had the Olympics wrapped up. Funny how the new stadium is going to be exactly in the same place that most of the Olympic construction would have taken place.

Let's not forget that the Chicago Casino that he's planning on putting on that sight will generate no revenue for first responders nor their woefully underfunded pensions. Rahm has stated over and over that all casino revenue will only go to CPS! WTF??

Comon! All you parents out there should be rejoicing! It's ALL ABOUT THE CHILDREN!

He's doing this so he can improve a school system that is already world class, so much so that is why he sends his own kids to.......
oh wait......he sends his kids to a private school.

Ok people. Nothing to see here. Move along.

I think Rahm's ego is in the way. Rosemont has offered the Cubs a home which was seriously considered(and still may be) and now to lash back, Rahm is taking DePaul basketball away, at least until DePaul finds they have lost their fan base.

Thursday...Rahm announces 1.1 Billion dollar projects for Navy Pier and McCormick Place. But, no money for you working and retired city employees. The hubris is just amazing with this guy! He'll be gone in what 2 years? He'll be leaving us stuck with the bill just like Daley. And by the way, this is just how Detroit started circling the drain, with a massive downtown project to bring in conventions, that never came. And why didn't the convention business come to Detroit to save their economy? Because it turned into a violence plagued corrupt shithole!

Yet, our streets are full of potholes! Schools closing! People get robbed and can't defend themselves!

Can't call Police for help because we are way short!

Pension is a disaster due to Daley's ineptitude! Parking fiasco!

Time to throw all Democrats out of office! They are just thieves!

Wait, Are the so-called future entrepenuers of Chicago still suppose to be following the great leaders of Groupon as their mentors...as touted by Chicago Ideas week and mayor Rahm?

Remember the dog and pony show WITH HOLLYWOOD ACTORS AND EVERYTHING!! OMG...

City, Groupon Team Up To Launch Chicago Ideas Week
August 4, 2011 10:44 AM

Well, oh look ...

Ex-Groupon CEO Mason moving to San Francisco to start new company

Shame on you guys for filling the college kids heads with bullshit about how they should choose Chicago to start their companies.

Chicago to host 50 students at Ideas Week fest

August 03, 2011|By Alejandra Cancino | Tribune reporter

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday announced the creation of a program to bring 50 college students from around the Midwest to Chicago during the Chicago Ideas Week festival.

"These are the next entrepreneurs who are leaders in technology at their respected schools," Emanuel said at a press conference co-hosted by Groupon co-founder Brad Keywell.

The program, ThinkChicago, will showcase the city in an effort to encourage students to start careers and businesses here.

If Chicago is this great tech hub that Rahm boasts about how come his very own hand picked leaders are leaving town to start companies somewhere else.

STOP TRYING TO BULLSHIT US MAYOR! THE ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN words.

Why should the Obama have a library built? This is the 21st century and we don't print books anymore. Give him a web page we can't afford this brick and mortal crap. The city is broke, the state is broke and the nation is broke and the taxpayers are expected to pay for these tributes?

How long before Navy Pier gets renamers to Rahm Emanuel expo center or something like that.

This is arrogance at its finest seeking to build a legacy for himself like the Maggie Park and the Daley Plaza. It's not about the people here. It's about self-centered p---k's
