Here Comes the Pain

  • Nearly 850 Chicago Public Schools employees received layoff notices Friday, hours after officials said they had identified $52 million in administrative and operational cuts to help close an estimated $1 billion deficit in the upcoming fiscal year.

Eliminating almost 100 central office positions and adopting more efficient building maintenance will help save $20.7 million, on top of $31.6 million in cuts announced earlier this year, officials said. They did not estimate how much the district might save through layoffs — most resulting from a Board of Education decision last month to close 50 schools and programs — because some workers will be eligible to reapply for other jobs.
And where did most of that $1 billion deficit come from?
  • The nation's third-largest school district has been struggling to trim its deficit, which it said was inflated by a $400 million increase in its annual pension payments, salaries and flat or declining revenue.
Those pension "holidays" are coming home to roost.

You will never see or hear these same politicians cut their own paycheck or benefits. Just blame the Teachers, Policemen and Firemen their evil money grabbing selfish scum. They always change the laws covering themselfs. The FEDS know this. I am wondering what Bill Daley is planning on selling that belongs to the state if he becomes Govenor. Remember he represented the parking meter company in front of the city council hearings when they had the best interest of Chicago and it's citizens and stated it was the best deal since sliced bread!

The pension holiday for police and fire end in FY 2015. Read Illinois state law SB 3538. As a matter of fact SCC should provide a link just to remind 9.5 and this city's lap dog media of the coming deadline.

If all these CPS teachers and staffers are losing their jobs, will there really be a reason for some CPS employees to get a residency waiver while working in 'need basis subject areas' and be able to live outside Chicago anymore?

It seems to me if there's surplus of SUPPLY (laid off CPS teachers/staffers) than a NEED (CPS teacher/staff vacancies) than there's NO DEMAND, hence no need basis anymore...

It's been reported anywhere from 28% to 46% (5880 to 9660) of the 21,000+ CPS teachers live outside Chicago at an avg. salary of $72,000 and that's between $423,360,000 to $695,520,000 PER YEAR of CPS teachers salaries committed to non-Chicago residents for use in another city's economy....and this is just teacher salaries not principal, assistant principal, counselor, clerk, and other CPS staffer salaries..

Even If you take out half of the amount of teachers' salaries of those living outside Chicago because they were grandfathered with the old CPS Residency Policy (hired before Nov. 20, 1996) and you still have 2940 to 4830 CPS teachers allowed residency waivers to take between $211,680,000 to $347,760,000 to use in another city's economy.

Here are the Areas Assessed as Special Needs:

Special Education Teachers
Mathematics Teachers
Science Teachers
Librarians (REALLY???)
Guidance Counselors (REALLY???)
School Nurses
Reading Teachers
Bilingual Teachers
Physical Education Teachers (THIS IS A JOKE!!!!)
School Psychologists
Speech Pathologists
ROTC
Sign Language Interpreters
Occupational & Physical Therapists
Health Service Nurses
World Language (Exclusively: Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Latin, Farsi)

It would be interesting to see the breakdown by age and experience. My wife teaches at a CPS high school and there were major cuts at her school. She claims that most of the teachers were high on the seniority list. The Union busting tactic is to pink slip the older more experienced teachers and hire new young teachers who will burn out in three to four years. Daley gave the Principals tremendous power to pick and eliminate staff. Meanwhile, the mindset is to prepare the students for the ACT, ignoring the fact that most of the students need trade school training, not college. Rahm, Obama and Duncan still push college for everyone, ignoring the fact that many do not want to go to college and cannot handle it if they were to be accepted. My wife is required to teach Physics to Special Ed High School kids with Second Grade reading levels!

Article in sundays paper where a downstate Illinois legislator compared the property taxes in Chicago versus those not in Chicago and the amount that goes for education. Interesting, you should read it and you will see how low the taxes are in this town . You can bet property taxes will rise a lot in the coming years to pay for education ( 1 billion in the hole) and pensions ( multi billions in the hole).

Yes, just blame the elected officials. How about the unions in this state who gave millions to the elected officials and who also signed off on pension holidays? The union leadership got what they wanted: more benefits for their members which ensured reelection of union officials who made lots of money from union dues. Blame everyone involved in this mess.

flings money around with
reckless abandon on trivial
B.S. but has no money for
schools and needs to raise
our property-tax to the
max to finance those that are left. How is the money
being spent and allocated ?
And charter schools are cropping up like weeds in a
vacant lot and being financed by the board of education. And that Byrd woman was brought in to do
his dirty work, just like Brizard was. Open-up the books and see where the TIF
money is being "shunted" to.
Money collected for schools
should not be used to finance downtown high-rises

suit the mayor's fancy.
People of Chicago, wake-up

about how your tax monies
are being wasted and you are
not reaping benefits from them. Remember, silence is acceptance.

$4 million a day to do something parents should be doing. Again news is terrified to report this.

If CPS wanted to save money by cutting salary, they should start firing teachers in violation of the CPS Residency Policy. I, personally, know of (6) CPS teachers in violation, they are:

- 1 PE teacher at Lane College Prep

- 1 PE Teacher at Curie

- 1 Music Teacher at Lake View

- 3 Music Teachers at Taft.

The crazy part here is (3) of them are heads of the departments (2-Music, 1-PE) at each of their schools and are suppose to monitor others in regards to the CPS Residency Policy.

And, (4) of these teachers living outside of Chicago are listed on http://chicago.blockshopper.com

None of the (6) teachers are grandfathered from the old CPS Residency Policy (hired before November 20, 1996) which allows them to live outside Chicago at any time.

The (2) PE Teachers could have gotten residency waivers to live outside Chicago if they were originally hired and living outside Chicago. However, both of them initially listed Chicago as their residences and then moved outside Chicago, which put them in violation of the CPS Residency Policy.

Hell, one music teacher lives in WISCONSIN.

What does CPS do about the 6? NOTHING!!

And, I checked the www.bettergov.org website and each are avergaing $80,000, $8000 more than the CPS teacher averages.

So, this is $480,000 in CPS Teacher salaries going to goofs that lied about where they lived, had the ego to continue living outside Chicago, and are looked upon to teach CPS students.

I did use my finely honed west side detective skills to find out about these 'precious' CPS, $80K teachers and all I had to do is read this blog, target the most probable departments, key in some names of people from each school, (It's not that hard), and POOF!!!!

The information, all in matter of 20 minutes or less to find the information on the six of them.

Now, you have to wonder what CPS Investigators are doing. Though, they'd rather go after kids living outside the district as there's a payday to CPS for that as catching CPS teachers in violation just ruins their careers and puts them out of work. But, if these 'precious' teachers lose their jobs, it's because of their own stupidity and ego, thinking they'd never be caught.

If CPS does cut these 6 teachers loose and hire newbies, then that saves CPS $30K (or $180K total) a piece in teacher salaries....So, where's my finder's fee????

BTW: Now, it's time to do your police work...

What former NFL player working for CPS (not a teacher) lives in Alsip, IL and was hired after November 20, 1996 and not grandfathered into the old CPS Residency Policy?

It doesn't matter who you're suggesting lives outside Chicago in CPS Sports Administration and here's why:

All CPS Sports Administrators were told they were being laid off on June 28th. If they would like, they could re-apply for their job.

CPS already cut the staff, gave the remaining staff a $20,000 pay cut, and CPS will be seeking another $20,000 pay cut.

And, I just saw the regional AD posting. CPS has screwed up everything else and now interscholastic sports can join the list. Other districts require a type 75 for a "school" athletic director who is also an asst. principal. CPS doesn't. They're not even requiring you to be a certified teacher for the "regional" athletic director position. So what kind of sports programs can we expect to see? It should be interesting. They tell me the guy running the city's sports never worked in sports administration (He's the former assistant princiapl at Hyde Park HS).

Pruitt lives in Chicago now too, but, at one time he was only living in Alsip in violation of the CPS Residency Policy at one time, does that count and can it be enforced on him after the fact?

I would think that would save $74,807 (+ the rest of Robeson Mafia both Pruitt and Roy Curry got jobs for) in salary for CPS if they bumped him. Is Robeson Mafia member Jamie Spraggins still working for CPS too?

And, what does Fabray Collins ($33,328), another Robeson Mafia member, do for CPS at Robeson HS as a School Assistant?

BTW: Where does former King basketcaller Levertis Robinson ($74,200) and former Julian football coach J. W. Smith's son (Thomas - $74,200)) who work for CPS Asministration live?

Also, where (Now get this...does CPS really need this position?) CPS swim coordinator Kevin McCray ($65,070) live?

All these guys working in these positions for CPS are examples of waste throughout CPS and why our property taxes will get raised up to the tilt.

But, I cannot understand the system that they are under. If you are hired by the Chicago Public Schools then you are an employee of CPS, not the school that you are assigned to. What is this BS that when a school closes you are laid off and must reapply for a job at another school? If the police department did that then all of those officers who were in 021 would have been laid off? That is BS.
