Whoops
- Handcuffs didn’t stop a man, who had just been arrested, from making off with a Chicago Police squad last week, authorities say.
The incident happened around 12:45 p.m., after police arrested 42-year-old Marquette Fisher during a traffic stop in the 4100 block of West Adams Street, said Chicago Police Officer Ron Gaines, a department spokesman.
While he was handcuffed in the backseat of a squad car, he managed to get his hands in front of him, jumped into the front seat and drove off, Gaines said. He left the car a short distance away and was later arrested.
An outstanding warrant leads to a desperate escape attempt leads to multiple felony charges. Shit happens. Learn from it.

All situations are different but our main goal should be our own safety. Sometimes waiting for a cage car during a hot or cold day sucks but please secure prisoners in a cage car.
Ban handcuffs!
This happened in 014 w/ plain clothes guys a few years back. Promotion and cush reassignment resulted.
Sad.
sorry but it should have never happened. The squad car should not be running with no cage and an offender in the car. Perfect storm.

No cage?
Shortly after arrest, an oscar-worthy performance of a breathing problem, a trip in the bambulance and an admission to the hospital (paid for with your tax dollars), and a downed car in 11 for at least two shifts... was still trying to figure out a way to escape.
Some people just don't like jail I guess.
We need suburban police style "keep engine" running while keys are removed switches in our cars! I have been saying it for years. With the switch you can leave the lights on and car running with no keys, yet, it can not drive off.
Should never happen. Where were the officers when all this happened? Not close by!
I always take the keys out of my smart car whenever I leave it.
Now, Kees me you fool!!!!
Suburban departments have a gizmo on the cars that allow them to run and you cannot engage the car into drive. This only costs a few bucks, but they put officer safety first, not last like the city
One way to mitigate future incidents like this would be to get the key fobs that kill the car once they're out of range.
It amazes me that were still using keys. What sense does that make if your partner gets shot, and you don't know which of his 20 pockets he stuck the key in.
A bonus to the fobs would be incidents like stated.
Key fobs for driver and rider should be a mandate.
Safety first.
Something close to this happened to me years ago. I learned my lesson then. When I handcuff someone I place them in the back seat and put the seat belt on them, tight. Then I wait for a cage or a wagon before I decide to transport. However, I would suggest to never leave the keys in the car when you won't be in the front seat. Not too bright ontheir part. Some departments have put hard plastic seats in the rear with restraining rings. But, the CPD usually is cheap. But, never forget to use the seat belt, tight.!!
Not to bust balls, but we must really look like a joke after all the shit that happens here. I mean come on guys. I am in real need of a career change, if only to move out of this city. But in reality I am suck got over 15 years on...might as well as do 20
no a monday night qback but always take the keys out of ignition the mutts from time to time get out of handcuffs and no fault to the officers , stay safe.

Tact?
sat guys. not too shocking
I can't believe you guys don't have the run start switches in your cars. My PD (suburb) got these about 18 years ago. No prisoner stealing your squad. Always get into a warm/cool car, etc. They cost like a whopping 20 buck and any competent public works/fleet garage can install.
Wagons, wagons and more wagons, safe and secure, just sayin, old retired wagon guy.
I had a hunky young gent handcuffed to my bedpost once. I'm still not sure how he escaped.

Competent? That's non-existent anywhere in this Department or any City agency for that matter.
I just HATE when that happens!

How embarrassing ! The squad car riding off into the sunset and the cops standing in the middle of the street with their thumbs up their booties

That would be the answer granted the old wagon guys who replaced you would ever show up for a transport. Where I work on all watches your lucky to see them once or twice a tour. When you do ask for a transport it's the same always. They just need their personal or lunch at that exact moment. Or even more shocking is they go down on a stop. Funny thing these guys all come in and when asked why they have all zeros there answer is "we're the wagon, were supposed to stay available". If your a outside unit asking for a transport you might as well ask in Chinese because theses guys will never show up at all.
Old time wagon guys always made themaselves available. Always hovered around jobs, in case they were needed.
Car 54 where are you?
