New Jersey Haunts McJersey
- For all we know, Mayor Rahm Emanuel based his choice to lead the Chicago Police Department entirely on Garry McCarthy’s credentials. But it couldn’t have been lost on a politician as image-conscious as Emanuel that McCarthy looks like the top cop sent by Central Casting.
McCarthy shares the marquee of CNN’s ongoing documentary series “Chicagoland” with his equally resolute-looking boss and a young female high school principal.
It’s a role McCarthy reprised for the makers of “Chicagoland.” Their cameras also loved him at his previous job leading the Newark, N.J., police department, when they featured him in their acclaimed 2009 documentary series about Newark called “Brick City.”
More recently, though, there was some news out of The Brick City that could cast McCarthy’s tenure there in a different, much less reverential light.
The U.S. Department of Justice has decided a federal monitor must run the Newark force, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. A Newark city government spokeswoman said Tuesday that the monitor’s appointment was not yet finalized but was the “likely” outcome of a federal probe of the department that focused on McCarthy’s tenure there.
Not the best line to have on your résumé, that's for sure. And you can bet letters of recommendation are not coming from Newark.

It can all be explained. Lets face it Chicago's top cop is the stuff that hero cops, and legends are made of, and he looks the part, talks the talk and walks the walk. Saying he is also a chick magnet would be gilding the lily and thought by some to be going to far. What happened in New Jersey stays in New Jersey and will not travel to Chicago. According to an article in the Newark Patch on March 25th, crime in Newark was down 21% . They credit neighborhood volunteers and a ne gang unit. No mention of Compstat or the policies instituted by McCarthy while he was there.
Have you ever been to Newark? What a dump. I just do not see how any police chief could have been successful there. But, the mayor of Newark did endorse McCarthy and that says a lot.

Actually it doesn't. It has to do with an ACLU lawsuit alledging police misconduct and the department, when McCarthy was there, no discipling enough officers. Thats a bad thing?
Or would you rather have a police chief like the one in LA who is currently under investigation for giving a deputy's relative a pass on a separation case after approving 99 out of 100 prior separation cases. Thats better.

What amazed me is that McCarthy was hired ANYWHERE after his "altercation" with the tollway cops in New Jersey. He was still NYPD at that time.
The guy clearly had alcohol/entitlement/anger issues etc etc. That incident is documented and public record.
Later he reportedly tried to get the Palisades Parkway PD shut down. Those are the cops that had the temerity to give his daughter a ticket. Your daughter gets a ticket and you want the "offending" department shut down?

I didn't like J Fled, but at least he told you who was merit and who was not. And as a previous poster stated whoever replaces McCarthy might be much worse.
The feds WILL oversee the CPD in the near future. Contact cards and other questionable "Terry type" stops will be the main issue. The NYPD is having an issue with stop and frisk. Be careful of your handlers boys and girls. Know your job and act within the confines of the Constitution and not political passed hacks that couldn't spell constitution with a dictionary in the hands. Your freedom and family are MOST important.

" the mayor of Newark did endorse McCarthy...." Sometimes the best way to get rid of a bad employee is to let someone else promote them. I used to recommend pathetic employees who were looking for another job to my competitors. Better they should have the headaches than me.

any truth to the rumor that mccarthy hates italians on the job i hope that is not true because if my memory serves me right a certain nypd chief who was of the itailan decent saved his neck a couple of times.
