Someone Explain "Business Hours"?

Once again, a hair salon open until all hours. And once again, a bunch of people get shot and someone dies:
  • A 22-year-old man was shot to death and three other people were wounded in a shooting during a party about 1:10 a.m. Saturday at a beauty salon in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

The man, who was identified as Eddie Taylor of the 1900 block of South Homan Avenue, was shot in the face and was pronounced dead at the scene in the 4400 block of West Madison Street, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs....

  • Police said one of the people who was shot got into an argument with a "male offender," who wasn't invited to the party at the salon. The attacker then took out a gun and started firing shots. No one is in custody as a result of the incident....
We're assuming these are licensed premises. Do they have some sort of "B.Y.O.B." thing where they can claim they're actually doing hair at 0100, 0200, even 0400 hours, but in reality, people are getting charged a cover, bringing in booze and settling old scores with guns? Someone ought to ban after-hour salons.

That location is one of hundreds that are allow special privileges as long as a campaign contribution or honorarium is paid to the local 28th ward alderman Ervin.

Ervin gets a lot of campaign contributions from drug dealers and crooked businesses in the ward. Which is why 011 is the dope dealing shit hole haven of the city and country.

He has been known to maintain company and alliances with dope dealing crooked businesses and will attack cops that shut them down.

The feds and IG can't take Ervin down quick enough. He is the worst of the lot.

Black hair salons have been open late and well into the morning hours. I remember asking why (Back when we rotated shifts every period). The answer I was told is Black people's hair is different to work with. straightners, relaxers, weaves, extensions, braids and the chemicals to color and glue take time to use and style the hair. The hair is usually dry and more brittle. Often you see a Black person patting their head instead of scratching their head if it itches. scratching would break the follicle at the root and ruin the styling I was told. I don't know if it;s true but certainly made sense to me. That might explain the long hours.

OT:

In June, the RTA extended the expiration date of Ride Free permits for people with disabilities to September 30. The extension allowed more time for riders to apply for the program as it could take between four and six weeks for eligibility to be approved.

“We extended the renewal process to ensure every qualified rider is able to ride the transit system,” said Leanne Redden, Acting Executive Director of the RTA. “We hope the extension has given the riders the time they needed to apply through the BAP program to ensure there are no interruptions in their service. If they have not applied yet, they should do so immediately, as time is running out.”

Obviously, time has NOT run out. I recently bought a Ventra card to replace my expiring permit, but have yet to use it. The old permits have still not been deactivated.

Gotta wonder how much revenue is being lost there...

Its to bad the licensing unit of vice only works Mon-Fri 9-5. They rarely leave the office and investigations are paper follow-ups. This unit’s compliment looks very pale since they rarely leave the concrete warehouse to get some sunshine and vitamin D with the exception of their 1 hour lunches.
When city inspectors go out and conduct city license investigations, tactical teams and beat cars babysit the inspectors as they conduct business. Tie up the districts that are so understaffed and always in a backlog status. The license unit is no where to be seen on weekdays during business hours only to be notified by report. This may be a striking revelation, but they are sworn members, they do carry firearms occasionally and they should exercise their arrest powers so arrest atrophy does not set in.
Maybe they can be assigned to field duties conducting licensing investigations in the wee hours of night and especially weekends. Write those ANOVs, make those dram shop type physical arrests. Handle your areas of responsibility please. Lets end the practice of “investigative” units from passing the buck relying on someone else to do their dirty work type arrests and enforcement actions and put them in the field as support units for the patrol division. Together we can!

While I can't comment on the state of just how long all styles take, this does make sense. I know that my dreadlocks over atleast the past 8 years have went from taking a mere hour to be washed, retwisted, and dried, to almost 2 1/2 hours as they've gotten longer.

If I decide to go to a salon or barber shop on a Friday after work I have to take in to consideration that I may be out of there by 11pm taking in to account people who already have appointments so they can party or what have you that weekend, barbers and locticians who need to take their breaks & etc. I do personally know that when my wife used to take my daughter to get her hair braided it could take 5+ hours before everything is done.

Uhhhh not really. Most African Americans styling salons that stay open are usually the unprofessional ones who overbook their clients and you will see women sitting there for 3-6 hours waiting to get their hair done. That is unprofessional to have people wait that long for a hairstyle. Now, their are stylist who do favors for their clients and may stay late to accommodate them for whatever reason and no they are not always the "ghetto salons" as some of you call them. FYI, some white, black and other ethnicity stylist make more than exempt rank. SMH

Knock it off with above. I work that unit and we are forced to take only a 30 minute lunch with 2 hour travel time.
Last time my elite unit walk into a business was when Mayor Kelly was the boss.
We don;t need trouble doing our job. Laugh if you may but some of us hardly even have a pistol on us furing work or lunch. We rotate who carries a rod for a day when we go to lunch.

Dept of Revenue used to go into salons and look for proper licensing all over the once quiet northside. Many shops were scrutinized over who was doing what. Hair cutting vs. hi-stylin'.
These "folks" sure know how to stay up all night, and who's checks on the social club licensing anymore.
Willing to bet Revenue doesn't check these 'up all nite' businesses anymore. Think they pay their water bill?
