2nd Officer Wounded

  • Thirty-nine shots were fired Tuesday night during an Englewood gunbattle with an Indiana fugitive that injured a Chicago Police captain and a detective and left one man dead, Supt. Garry McCarthy said.

[...] Brown was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, unlawful use of a firearm and being a fugitive from justice.

But McCarthy also divulged for the first time that a second police officer had been wounded in the firefight near 72nd and Lowe. Brown barricaded himself in his sister’s first-floor apartment and a six-hour standoff followed.
McCarthy said a detective was hit in the leg by a bullet fragment. He didn’t realize until he got home that the blood on his pants was his own. An X-ray later revealed a bullet fragment was burrowed into his leg, McCarthy said.
And a speedy recovery wished to this Officer also.

this is what you call rush to judgement
1. serve a warrant
2. knowing offender was at location
not very smart to go and serve a warrant

3. upon serving the warrant a plan should have been in place since they knew offender might have been at location.

Who are you to judge the proper manpower and lack of judgement. There were officers from Fugitive Task Force and the CPD. No one was trying to be superman, just doing a job. These guys from Fugitives do this everyday. Thats their job serving warrants.
What do you want, 100 officers and SWAT teams everytime fugitives serves a warrant.
Not proper manpower, there was probably 10 po's there.
Leave it to the experienced officers, the captain that was shot had 28 years on.
As far as placing yourself in harms way, get a ,thats what working po's do. It comes with the job.

Understand captain was hit twice, one slug in the shoulder which was removed because it was causing great pain, another lodged now in his jaw which may have to be removed.

He may lose the hearing in his right ear. You lose your ability to "stereo-locate" instantly from which direction a sound is coming from when you only have one ear running. People with normal hearing just process automatically, never think about this. This is difficult to live with anywhere -- people with hearing problems miss something, say "What?" and are considered to be stupid -- but is really dangerous on the street...

"Graze wound?" Really serious injury. Where this "non-life-threatening" stuff came from all of a sudden I have no idea. Probably from people who don't have chunks of metal in them.

...and yeah, SCC is right about the adrenaline pump. It's a survival kick, to help you plow through a bad situation. Next day you get up and fall on your face; I did some exertion like that, must have used muscles I didn't know were there, couldn't hardly walk for a few days!

Best wishes for all. Get better, guys.

To 04:23: you are a blow hard. Shit happens on this job that you cant be prepared for no matter how much you train. If you ask me, they still did a great job regardless of 2 officers getting struck, it could have been a lot worse. Everyone that takes this job knows that there is a risk of being injured or killed and days like Tuesday remind us of just that. Its easy to sit back and say what they should have done, Im sure if you were with them it would have turned out a lot different. Thanks for commenting though, I like being reminded of how many beat offs come on here and act like they know everything. As for myself and countless other good officers, we'll learn from it and be better for it in the future.

Why don't you go back to sitting behind a desk and telling everyone how you're done working, that you've been there, done that, and yet have actually done nothing proactive in your career. Keep talking about the "hair gels" and when are they gonna learn to only respond to calls and do nothing else. That means don't talk shit about guys and gals doing there jobs, worry about your own and hope for the best for your fellow boys and girls in blue.

I really don't know what you are trying to come across with in your comment. First of all, the guys and gals in FAU and the USMS GLRFTF do fugitive investigations on a daily basis. When it comes to "serving warrants" they are the experienced officers. They undergo more training on entry and shooting than any CPD officer. Unfortunately in this situation, shots were exchanged and officers were injured. That's when SWAT comes into play - a barricade situation. Don't Monday-morning quarterback something you have never been assigned to do. As far as the proper manpower you refer to, what would you think is proper. They had a team of several CPD officers, US Marshals, and Gary PD officers. They went into this situation as ready as any "experienced officer."

Were you there? Do you know how much manpower they had? Sounds to me like they had a plan because the bad guy didn't get away. I wasn't there. I'm not going to say what they should/should not have done. Not my place to say anything. Not your place either. The important thing is that the two p.o.'s that were shot are going to survive, and the bad guys are either dead or in custody. IF mistakes were made, let the people who were there determine that. Otherwise, keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

I could call you names, but that would lower me to your level. I could mention that you are probably the last car to every call, even your own. Or add that you are a perfect example of the "let someone else do it mentality" that permeates too many on this job and in life in general. I'll am going to guess that you are under 35 YOA and have less than 10 years OTJ and spend your shift either shuffling papers and answering phones. If not, and you work a car, I'll bet that you need gas, have an emergency hand waver, have a slow leak, just sat down for lunch, or was JUST about ready to ask for a personal. In addition, I'll bet that you send accidents into the desk, spend 45 minutes on a noise disturbance or kids playing basketball, write cracked windshields on working people, and haven't inventoried a gun or some dope since your FTO forced you to. Then you tell your family and friends how fucked up the department is, we got no backup, they're fucking us, why do I need activity to get VRI, and go to the bar in a CPD hoodie and tell war stories. Then when something like this happens, you break out that new iPhone and criticize working coppers and marshals and a Captain that are risking it all to take a REAL FUCKING CRIMINAL off the street.

All of this leads me to the question: who the fuck are you to criticize anyone, you useless second guessing Monday morning quarterbacking hack?

I will await your answer. But won't expect one.

It doesn't look good to have cops at the hospital because we are low on manpower? You are a goof. If you are even a cop, you're probably the guy who would've stopped on the way to the 10-1 because you saw a DOPW and had to write an ANOV, or had an "unavoidable traffic stop."

If you are in a rush to please the master, and generate inconsequential paper in the hood- have at it. But don't you dare knock the officers who responded to the hospital in care of a fallen brother. Shame on you.

They only protest when a felon who just shot at police or robbed a nearby store stand a chance of hitting the ghetto lottery via lawsuit. Then they do what they have been trained to do: that is to shout out "I saw the whole thing, the poleese dun kilt that man in cold blood. He was turning his 18 year old life around and was about to start university on Monday. He dun had his hands up holding a bag of jolly ranchers smilin' at the poleese."

Police captain was warning others when shot, prosecutors say

October 10, 2014 7:39 PM

"A Chicago police captain left cover to warn arriving officers of the danger when he was shot by a fugitive who was wanted for a shooting spree days earlier in Indianapolis, Cook County prosecutors said Friday.

"Daniel Brown, 42, his right arm in a cast after it was broken during his arrest, was ordered held without bail on charges he shot Capt. Edward Kulbida and was responsible for the death of the boyfriend of Brown’s sister in a shootout and standoff Tuesday night in the Englewood neighborhood.

"On Tuesday, officers with the Police Department’s fugitive task force as well as U.S. deputy marshals responded to an anonymous tip that Brown was at his sister’s apartment in the 7200 block of South Lowe Avenue.

"Officers saw Brown looking out from an apartment window and shouted at him, “Police, police,” prosecutors said. As officers attempted to enter the building, he opened fire...

"Responding to a 10-1 call that officers were under fire, Kulbida, a 29-year police veteran, took cover with other officers in the vestibule area, underneath the window from where shots had been fired. Unable to communicate by police radio in the vestibule, Kulbida exited the front of the building to warn other officers, Mack said. At that moment, he was shot in the right shoulder and sustained a graze wound to the head above his right eye.

"Kulbida still has bullet fragments lodged in his head and has suffered a loss of hearing...

"During the shootout, Brown fired 11 rounds at police...

"Six hours into the standoff, police stormed into the apartment just before 11:30 p.m. and found Brown hiding in a closet...armed with a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson pistol equipped with an extended magazine and still loaded with three rounds..."

Fugitive Apprehension Unit the most trained on Entry & Shooting??? Hahahaha don't think so. You just sound like a complete moron. If this "warrant" met the criteria (which most of them do) of being a SWAT Warrant then some bosses heads are going to roll. An officer was shot. Not only that but a Boss was shot. Now the questions will be asked: Who was responsible for the Warrant? WHY wasn't SWAT notified after the circumstances CLEARLY meet the criteria? This could have all been avoided if these "elite FAU" put their ego aside and made the proper notifications. Oh, and GREAT approach on the warrant guys. Your right, you guys are the best trained at ENTRY. Oh, your "phone call" to get on FAU told u that your the best at ENTRY & Shooting so it MUST be true. Your a joke.

You must be that guy. That guy who says "call swat" at every call. What do you know about fugitive warrants? What do you know about swat call outs. Unfortunately the guys in FAU/GLRFTF can't call for swat every time they are looking for a bad guy. You are a moron. You have no clue. Go back to playing dungeons and dragons, loser.

Re:
this is why you don't place yourself in harms way.
leave it to the experience officers .
this is what you call rush to judgement
1. serve a warrant
2. knowing offender was at location
not very smart to go and serve a warrant
without proper man power .
3. upon serving the warrant a plan should have been in place since they knew offender might have been at location.
hopefully next time they will used better judgement
before ones believe to be superman.
speedy recovery.

Actually, the experienced and well-trained officers at the scene, had the building surrounded and planned on waiting it out! The ego-headed supervisor, overruled the plan with HIS rank! Thank God some young officer with a family wasn't severely injured or killed because someone has an ego to fill!

At least one Capt did the job that day. The Capt from FAU showed up and didn't even check on his people. He was too busy trying to look squared away and under control. What a fuckin douche. Go back to your desk asshat and crunch your numbers.
