God's blessing to all the peace makers in our city and country.

The media did a nice job showing member'of the CPD at their finest, caring about an injuried sworn member. Also, taking care of the crime scene.

Being in L E bonds people like no other job. May all the Saints of heaven watch over the men and women that work every day on our nations streets.

Proud of all of you.

We all get hung up in the politics and B.S. of the daily grind of the CPD. Incidents like the one today restore my faith in the brotherhood of our job. The bravery and unity of spirt displayed during this incident made my heart swell with pride at being associated with all the fine men and women who serve our city. When the shit hits the fan, we can pull it together like no other organization in the country. Thank God for looking out for E.K. It was truly a miracle. And thank all my brave brothers and sisters for an incredible job today.

To many commanders and xo's there from other districts(from far away) that did not need to be there. They all had to be heard on the radio I think to just be heard, this only added to the confussion that was going on. One accidental discharge, keep your finger off your trigger until u are going to fire. If you are to stupid to do this, please don't bother responding to the scene. Lastly, once swat arrives you should stand down, you don't need to try to be the cowboy( you don't have the equipment or the training) that means when they enter holster your weapon if you are on the perimeter. Aiming at the building while swat and officers are inside is just plain stupid. I saw officers doing a lot of stupid things out there, pull your head out your arsess before you get yourself or a fellow officer killed due to your stupidity. That's my debriefing, stay safe and go home at the end of your tour.

Superintendent McCarthy "very impressed" by the CPD SWAT team that used flash bang, made entry, apprehended subject. Maybe now give them higher pay and take home cars.

Not so impressed with all the area "gun teams" "gang teams" "tact teams" that showed up "after the fact" but insisted to run into the building for what ever reason and then had to be rescued by the SWAT team. Hold outer perimeter guys like everyone else was and thank God none of you were hurt.

btw, Kudos to Supt McCarthy (yes, I used his name, no joke) for keeping control of that TV Interview and telling the MSM hacks to back off while he was still speaking.

Maybe him getting engaged made him a new man? (One can always hope.)

During the standoff, suddenly it came on the air, "Shot fired inside the building. Not by police, not by police."

This must have been it --

"Police also found a 42-year-old man dead inside the apartment along with the shooting suspect, police sources said. Police said Tuesday night the 42 year-old appears to have died from a gunshot wound, although they could not immediately determine how the man had been shot. At least one gun was recovered from the scene by police."

...and now the inevitable...

"As Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters huddled along 71st Street that one person was in custody and another dead, a group of three or four women immediately broke into sobs, with one shouting "They...killed him!"

So when does the protest march start? No one knows exactly what happened but don't let that stop you.

I have to say, what we do is in no way directly tied to what we are paid. Not that we don't deserve more, just that we all knew, at least I did, that I was never going to get rich on this job. I knew I was going to have a relatively secure career with enough income to pay the bills although I knew I have to budget carefully. I had decent health care throughout and a pension at the end.

We work for a City government, not a large investment firm. We get what we get and I am grateful for whatever I get on the 1st and 16th. If I wanted to make lots of money I would have gone to work somewhere else. As it is, I took a pay cut to take this police job. I was never sorry. What I do and what I see can never be replaced anywhere else. The reaction of people who still respect the police is like nothing else. My wife and family are proud of their husband and dad. No supercop, just a guy who does a difficult job as good as I can.

I had to be told these same things once upon a time. It made all the difference in the world once it all started to sink in.

Be grateful for what you have. Go to an FOP meeting once in a while. Vote in all elections. Don't complain. Ever. Enjoy your life and career.

Will the person who continually comments about how the swat team saved the tact, gang, and gun teams please get over yourself. These tact, gang, and gun teams have been involved in 10x more officer involved shootings than any Chicago swat team. These are the first responders who usually take care of business an hour before swat arrives with their equipment and camouflage.

At the same time, good work in actually going in to get this P.O.S., just leave the ego at the door. We are all on the same team. They were only trying to help a brother that needed assistance. They didn't think twice about rushing into an active shooter situation. We should be praising everyone who should up to try to help. When the shit hits the fan CPD is second to none (The officers, not necessarily the brass). I don't personally know the Captain but am relived he will be ok.

I'm glad the Captain is OK and I hope he gets well soon. He is a good cop and a good man.

This could have been much, much worse with multiple police lying dead on the sidewalk in front of a building where offenders were shooting down on police who were standing inside a kill zone. Charging the door after shots were fired was a bad idea.

Bad tactics will get you killed. Remember that.

Maybe. But it took WAY too long for them to respond and get set up. i hope when they do their formal critique they discuss all that could be done better next time. Then share it with us all so we are close to being on the same page. We all need better training on what to do - not to do - and definitely better radios and ONE person in charge. Too many people chiming in. Cops running into the building is bad.

Let me preface this by saying I'm glad EK made it out alive and that I never want to see any cop get killed or hurt.

But I agree. How EK isn't in prison or fired is beyond the comprehension of anyone who has ever had the displeasure of working around him. Degenerate gambler and all around rotten motherfucker who flexed his rank every chance he got if you weren't one of his guys. Anyone who would do what he did to his own blood because of a gambling problem is a piece of shit. Ask brother Michael for that story. How he treated some of us female officers is disgusting and he should have been fired when we took it to higher authorities but his clout under Cline save his ass on many many occasions. Glad you are OK Ed, but you'll always be a piece of shit in mine and A TON of other peoples book.

No wonder everybody relies on the media tell us what's going on because nobody else does

OK, allow me to rant please. Great job yesterday. I was there and was part of it.. Im not saying that for a pat on the back just saying I was aware of the situation and could see and hear alot about what was happening... with that said where do I start... Oh, I know. The PPOs at 58th and Laflin who heard loud reports somewhere in the area.. 45 seconds earlier the second round of shots were fired and the officer was shot. trying to sort that out PPO comes over the air screeming bloody murder about shots fired at 58/laflin. didnt see them, nobody shot, not shot at the police just heard them.. Hey, PPO welcome to englewood. Also, a copper just got shot 45 seconds ago and are currently in a gunfight.. Handle it!! Second, to 300, car 3A, 500, 800, 600X, 606, 606A, the 463 team, 900 and 6791 are you guys kidding me????? STAY OFF THE RADIO IDOTS!!! Even blue shirts requesting swat and K9 about 15 times after the dispatcher said for the past 10 minutes they are on the way.. everyone just wants to be on the air and heard like they have a great idea or are running things. For the love of god SHUT UP!! The only people on the radio are the guys trapped inside and a supervisor who is trying to get them out.. or people who may have life or death information about the offender location or actions.. thats it. Nobody else needs to be on the air. We cause our own chaos. Everyone thinks they have a better Idea than the next. And hey, 6791 great job on pulling all the coppers you guys had and assembling them 3 miles away at ogden park.. are you geographically challenged??? A really fast response should be no problem from 65th and racine to 72nd and lowe. I guess hamilton park, you know the huge park two blocks away which is divided from the location by a huge brick wall with the train tracks wasnt big, safe or close enough. when they need resources and help you pull guys 3 miles away. get that man a gold star, he will fit in with bt 300 all day long. bt 300, please I hope someone takes your radio away. talking just so you can be heard talking and make it look like you were in charge. 500 was no better. all the bosses were fighting to be in charge. and the sgt from narcotics I think 6240 get serious would ya... at no time did a single thing you say make sense, let alone correct. to everyone else, good job especially the guys on the ground and the coppers who stormed the place to help out and breached the back allowing the copper who was shot to get out the back.

And I don't agree with anyone who has ill will like that to another copper.

Well wishes are definitely in order, but let's save all the "he's a great guy" rah rah stuff.

Hypothetically speaking, is it ok to work a benefit for another copper, and feel free to help yourself to some proceeds? Didn't think so.

I find it amazing how easy it is for you to spew your nonsense and criticize people who are trying to help. I was there and I was one of those gung ho idiots (as you put it) who went into the building. I along with other P.O.'s who I did not know were trying to do one thing, save a shot Police Officer.

You can say what you want but SWAT was a long ways off and it took them a few hours to get there. I am in no way complaining at them, let me be straight these guys did a phenomenal job.

Would I do it again YES, and for the record SWAT did not rescue us we walked out the back door after they had the building secure. I am not going to criticize you and say you were hiding behind the tree or anything else, I just ask one thing don't criticize others who are trying to help. I have well over 15 years on this job so I am not a hair gel tact guy as you put it.

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone there everybody did an amazing job.

Please stop...you are making a complete a$$hole out of yourself and the rest of the SWAT team. The officers on scene first had only one choice and that was to go save a wounded fellow officer in that building. Those of us on scene know that it takes time for SWAT to get organized and mobile. We would prefer to wait for SWAT, but under these circumstances time wasn't in abundance. Those Tact guys and "Hair Gels" did exactly what they should have done. They risked their lives for a wounded fellow officer. If,in the process, they fall under fire, and are unable to extricate themselves, well then, hopefully SWAT finally arrives on
scene to neutralize the threat so the brave officers can exit the building. In other words, we all have jobs to do, just do YOURS and stop criticizing the job others are doing.I was on scene, and everyone acted heroically.

incorrect.. he was shot about 30 seconds after he gave that warning.. In fact, while he was giving out information is when he got shot. Listen to the tape. He is giving a flash and then you can hear a shot and the radio keys off then they come up screaming the capt has been shot. either way, good job by the initial guys who were with the capt.. to all the others who responded and pretty much screwed things up no good job for you. at least nobody died because they way guys were acting was flat out unsafe and stupid. Im all for helping them out, getting them out and taking charge to get in the place to get business done and not waiting for swat... especially with coppers trapped. but some of the stuff guys were doing was flat out unsafe, reckless and dumb. think guys.. a bad mistake in that situation doesnt mean a do over or just a story to tell it means you being dead forever with a grieving family for the rest of their lives.. and what do you get?? a name on a wall and a star in a case. Your family gets the same, a star in a case with your name on it... means nothing. You have zero lives to give to this department and city. Im not saying that to be bitter i am a worker.. i mean it seriously, do not die for this department or anyone else... You have your own family and well being to ensure goes on. selfish? Well, even I admit it sounds that way.. but to my wife and kids, its probably the most unselfish thing I can say.. damned if I do, damned if I dont.

Ummm... some gadget called FLIR.

Forward Looking InfraRed...

Can check roofs, bushes and trees and may even find an offender hiding in or around vehicles without risking lives.

Cop shot, pull out all the stops. Hell! If it had been raining hard enough I'd have sent for the Marine Unit.

I can't help myself. I can't stand all the criticism from cops blasting people who were talking about storming the building to get the bad guy and the wounded officer out. Isn't that exactly what our active shooter says? This was an active shooter. Now everyone is calling for the perimeter and waiting for SWAT. They took too long to get there. True. They are over rated. But if this was a school shooting you would expected to go in - and according to the order - alone. Whatever decision was made or should have been made should have been done on the scene by at least 1 white shirt of any rank who would step forward and take charge. When I listened to the radio - live mind you - I heard what sounded like a couple of sgts and POs making some great decisions to get people in and out. And what I also heard was a lost of useless and confused chatter by way too many cmdrs. Thanks. I've vented and feel better.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Yeah cool story bro but 100+ coppers were surrounding the place including 3 guys who made it to the roof. Also the offender was inside the building. Flir can't see through bricks in a huge building. It was a dumb and pointless thing to request at the time while they were shooting. You could hear the guys siren so he wasn't even in scene.... So he just wanted to be the guy that was heard on the radio having the big idea.... Fail

As a citizen, I'm surprised post 9-11, you have not trained for something like this so that there is not unnecessary talk over the radio and there is some standard by which everyone knows who is in command of the situation.

I know it's hectic and caotic, but that's why it should be something you all train for on an annual basis.

Glad you brother is OK.

That dispatcher was incredible. She really stepped up. Great job.
