CTA Shooting

  • A man who opened fire on a CTA Blue Line train with “an assault weapon-type rifle” Thursday morning was taken into custody, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.

While no one was hurt in the shooting, passengers were rattled when the man fired five shots from the La Salle Station platform at the oncoming train about 11:20 a.m.

  • At a news conference later in the day, McCarthy confirmed that five shots were fired at the train, but he wouldn’t speculate about the man’s motive. He said the man had a FOID card and that the stock had been cut off the rifle.

“He fired a number of shots at the train — not an individual, which is perplexing,” McCarthy said. “We responded, we got the gun, we got him. It’s kind of bizarre behavior. I don’t know his motivations.”
If you can classify him as a mental, he might lack intent. Without intent, CompStat can claim there wasn't a crime and all those bullet dents and holes are just so much "damages of unknown origin!" It's fool-proof!

So much for NO CARRY zones. This idiot is a perfect example of why you have to carry.

What? Did everyone forget Colin Ferguson on the Long Island train who killed so many people on their way home from work - and then tried to deny it?

Screw the NO CARRY zones and Beretta should sue anyone who uses that sticker - when did they get permission to use an image of Beretta's 92 product????

Where was our beat car when crime occurred?
Safe passage , school dismissal on east end , check off roll call ? It is not 1950 , Morgan park police district needs 5 beat cars , 1 wagon assigned to each sector .
We have become an easy target . Armed robbery at 103 and Kedzie , not much on that story .
Let's hire workers for safe passage at every school in our neighborhoods .

So what's the difference between being on a CTA platform and shooting at trainloads of people, and being at the airport and shooting at planeloads of people, or being on the street and shooting at busloads of people?

Not even a name given out. Why does this guy drop off into some kind of notch and nothing much happens?

We've had "head cases" around the CTA before. That didn't get them off. Remember Joseph Konopka? Doing 13 years.

Unfortunately, no carry zones are the "best" targets for bad guys, the easiest targets, and the places where we most need concealed carry. Every time I see one of these stupid signs, I wonder to myself, it's fine with the ISP and my local police and the Illinois legislature for me to be armed EVERYWHERE else, and yet the building owner or manager arbitrarily knows better than these organizations that I shouldn't be armed there? Ridiculous.

Charges announced after South Shore man fires assault rifle at CTA train

"A South Shore man has been charged in connection with a Thursday shooting of a CTA train that Chicago's top cop dubbed "bizarre."

"Lorenzo Jones, 25, is facing several felonies after police said he fired an assault rifle several times at a CTA Blue Line train Thursday morning. No one was injured in the shooting.

"Jones, of the 7500 block of South Luella Avenue, allegedly fired five times at a train about 11:20 a.m. on the Blue Line platform at South LaSalle Street and West Van Buren Street, police said.

"Jones has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm, one count of possession of a stolen firearm, and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, all felonies.

"After police responded to a call of shots fired, a district officer on foot patrol spotted Jones nera the station and arrested him.

"Jones, who has a lengthy arrest record, is due to appear in bond court Friday afternoon."

After 9/11 The US Coast Guard deployed some of their boats around the filtration plant and Navy Pier. They were ordered to mount automatic weapons on the various hard mounts on their boats. I am not sure if they were M-60's or an updated version or similar. That lasted a week or so. The clout hacks at Navy Pier complained those machine guns looked scary. That was Coast Guard, then a part of the US military. The automatic weapons came off.

Also it was forbidden to dock private vessels between Navy Pier and the filtration plant. That didn't last long either. One boat was given special dispensation to dock there. That was the private yacht Blackhawk, then owned by Bill Wirtz. The Blackhawk could go where the owner wanted.

Coast Guard to use machine-gun boats

July 14, 2005

"LAKE MICHIGAN — U.S. Coast Guard boats armed with machine guns will be patrolling off the shores of Lake Michigan this month, but the occasion is nothing dire.

"Coast Guard spokesmen said the boats will be here to train local units, assist in routine patrols and provide a few days of security for a Canadian frigate visiting Navy Pier.

"Lt. Rolando Hernandez, spokesman for Coast Guard Group Milwaukee, said the boats will not appear as a result of last week's bus and train bombings in London--as has been reported in other news media--or any specific threat.

"Armed with M240 machine guns, the 25-foot fast-response boats, part of the Marine Safety and Security Team, will be sent from the East Coast. The Department of Homeland Security has bought several hundred such boats since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, about 35 of which are stationed in the Great Lakes, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. J.G. Ryan Barone said."

U.S. Delays Plan for Machine-Gun Drills on Great Lakes

September 03, 2006|Michael Hawthorne | Chicago Tribune

"CHICAGO — The Coast Guard has been quietly planning to conduct target practice on Lake Michigan with boat-mounted machine guns that would be fired a few miles from beaches along the North Shore.

"But plans to establish a permanent "live-fire zone" in waters near Illinois' Highland Park, Lake Forest and Waukegan -- and in 33 other spots around the Great Lakes -- are on hold after boating groups and a congressman complained that the public wasn't informed about the training exercises.

"Firing live ammunition at floating targets in the lakes is "essential to carrying out Coast Guard missions relating to military operations and national security," the documents [stated]."

http://articles.latimes.com/2006/sep/03/nation/na-livefire3

They scotched the plans when the complaining continued. All kinds of training -- aircraft carriers, subs -- took place out there during WWII and the military never hurt any civilians.

"The M240, officially Machine Gun, 7.62mm, M240, is the US military designation for the FN MAG (Mitrailleuse d'Appui Général, meaning General Purpose Machine Gun), a family of belt-fed, gas-operated medium machine guns firing the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge.[1]

"The M240 has been used by the United States Armed Forces since the late-1970s. It is used extensively by infantry, most often rifle companies; as well as ground vehicles; watercraft; and aircraft. Despite not being the lightest medium machine gun in service, it is highly regarded for reliability..."

You sir, are an asshat. Typical roll call is 8-10 coppers. How many platforms can that many coppers cover at one time, 5 tops? If something happens and the trains get stopped, how do they get there with no car? Special has plenty of cars, mass transit watches have 2, one for transport, 1 for getting to 95th. I earn my paycheck everyday sir. The amount of time I have on the job doesn't nor shouldn't matter. Our job descriptions and the uniform we wear may be the same, but somewhere along the line you forgot what it means to be the "police". I don't pretend to be the police, I wear the uniform proudly and do my job to the best of my ability day in and day out. I am the police.
Just so you know, I am not "jealous" of your choice of assignment on this job. I have more than enough time on this job to bid to a retirement spot. Only problem with me doing that is that I feel that my family, my fellow officers & the citizens I serve may then be stuck having to rely on a guy like you for help.
