Nice to be Connected

Some people have all the luck, just happening to get a judge with such clear vision:
  • Ald. Rey Colon was acquitted Monday of drunken driving, a development sure to make his re-election effort easier in the weeks ahead.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge James Pieczonka made the not-guilty ruling at the conclusion of a short bench trial, during which a video recording of Colon's July 25 arrest was played.

Although Colon can be seen on the video putting his arms out to the side to keep his balance while trying to stand on one foot during field sobriety tests, Pieczonka noted that Colon was able to walk in a straight line and stand "quite rigid and straight" during the rest of the tests.

The judge also determined Colon's booking mug shot did not prove he was intoxicated. "His eyes appear to be a little bloodshot, not completely bloodshot — I've seen a lot worse," Pieczonka said.
So....just a "little" impaired is ok? Not only did Colon beat the DUI, he beat the probable cause ticket as well:
  • Colon was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. on the westbound Homan Avenue exit off the Eisenhower Expressway. Illinois State Police Trooper Eric David testified that he made the stop after seeing the alderman's Honda Element twice drift slightly onto the shoulder from the right lane.

But Colon also was found not guilty of improper lane use because the judge determined he should have been instead cited for driving on the shoulder.

Colon was found guilty of driving on an expired license, for which he was fined $200. He said his birthday was earlier in July, and he had forgotten to renew it. He also was fined $50 and sentenced to supervision for not signaling his exit from the highway.

David testified at trial that Colon's lights were not on, and he smelled alcohol on Colon's breath. Colon's speech was slurred, and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, David said. But the judge said he could not detect slurred speech on the video.
The judge also noted that he couldn't smell any alcohol on the video either. And never mind that history of DUI and habitual compliance violations regarding insurance and valid licenses - it means nothing at all.

We certainly hope that all Illinois troopers are retrained to properly recognize aldercreatures driving under the influence, as they obviously have no experience in applying such a thing. That way, they won't inconvenience the powerful as they tool along the expressway like an unguided missile where your friends and families might be traveling.

He would have to get caught in different county and then maybe the judge would be impartial and not magically swayed by the machine

It always amazes me that elected public officials can't follow simple rules every 4-5 years and keep their shit in order, like plates, license status, etc. You make $100K+ and you can't have f--king common sense to renew your license or keep it from being suspended!!!!!???????
Just like when California Governor Arnold didn't know he needed a Motorcycle Classification to drive a motorcycle when he got in a crash. Dumb.
Wasn't Colon suspended before too? But remember, everyone is above the law, except for the non-connected blue shirt.
If you don't believe in ethics, or following rules and laws, come to Illinois and the voters will love and support you, and continue to vote for you,

Apologies, from a non-law enforcement officer, to a fine State Trooper for his efforts to uphold an important set of laws.

Having lost someone to a drunk driver, I appreciate your efforts, and apologize that Chicago election politics, and a, potentially corrupt judge, thwarted your efforts to rid the highways of another self-centered, arrogant, politician.

Keep up the good work, Trooper!

OT but speaking of Connected..

Finance just got (in the last 90 days or so) a new Asst Director for the parking enforcement staff.

A person I know over there let me know that stuff is changing in how they are going to be enforcing.

Due to Cook County making the paper about owing Chicago around 43k in outstanding tickets and a few of the high profile people getting noticed for speed cameras and RLC's...

Apparently the 'new' policy is:

Write it and let the driver deal with it unless it is a Marked Police Vehicle or Fire Department vehicle. And apparently certain violations are being 'considered' for marked squads depending on the areas of the city they are parked illegally in.

As a point, I saw a handwritten ticket on the M plate that is always parked around Hudson and Blackhawk the other day...for an Residential Permit violation. And it wasn't a district unit # on the parker.

Whoever wrote that should know the ordinance. An M plate means that this is a service vehicle and is exempt just as if it was the phone company of cable company on a call.

Speaking of residential parking and the Daley Crime Family Parking Meter Scandal. On the west side on 018, south of Chicago there are a couple of north/south streets which have metered parking. At 6PM they turn into RESIDENTIAL PARKING. I have never seen this anywhere else in the city. Now is the city, meaning us taxpayers, paying the company that Shortshanks the Lawyer now represents, the parking fees for those meters being out of service to be RESIDENTAL PARKING after 6PM until morning?
