Marijuana Deserts?
- Black patients seeking medical marijuana won’t find it in their own backyard, despite a recent law making it legal.
Chicago’s black communities were shunned by groups applying for dispensaries. CBS 2 [...] looks at whether race was a factor.
Lewis Hoy suffers from fibromyalgia, a condition that allows him to buy marijuana legally from a dispensary instead of on the street.
“Half the time you don’t know what you’re getting,” he says of cannabis bought illegally.
But Hoy and scores of black patients will not be able to buy it in their neighborhoods because no one applied to open a dispensary in Chicago’s predominantly black South and West side communities.
In fact, potential vendors didn’t even try.
Maybe the vendors were a bit leery of taking business away from the established street corner pharmacists?
Or maybe the vendors looked at why there are food deserts on the south and west sides and realized, "Hey, these neighborhoods can't support legit multi-national, multi-billion dollar businesses without armed guards and locked display cases and a curb high enough to deter smash-and-grabs with stolen trucks. Why the hell would we want to deal with that headache?"
Just maybe?
Nah, better scream "racism!"

Maybe the current dealers of weed in the neighborhood threatened them with violence if the legit businesses tried to move into "their turf."
Or maybe the potential vendors looked at what's happening out west. Thanks to the fact that State law is contrary to Federal law (regarding marijuana), the dispensary business is strictly CASH.
And it's very, very dangerous to deal in a high volume, cash-rich business in the middle of high-crime neighborhoods.
In fact, you might call it unbelievably SUICIDAL, financially and personally. And the folks - or people - who applied for the licenses aren't that stupid.
Hate to bust your bubble SCC, but no matter where they put these places, they'll all have Fort Knox type of security measures in place.
Your final assessment is right.
No one - especially the "ELITE" who "qualified" (yeah...wink,wink) for a license, wants anything to do with dealing with the drama.
Some North Shore "connected consortium" who got a license does not want to commute to their store in Englewood or Hegewisch to deal with all "the drama".
AND - you know that no minority got through all the "qualifications process". Who has all the front money needed?
Maybe the solution will be some new CTA stops from the South to the new "North Shore dispensaries".
I am sure seeing a bunch of "eager customers" with their pants down to their knees coming into Lake Forest or Glencoe from "da South Side" will make neighbors happy.
"Hey, Where be da Weed Store?"
"I gots ta' git me some."
Probably because the street gangs don't want their street sales messed with. Also the fear of robberies around the area.
You again hit the nail square on the head......
Its funny how Moochelle Obama is scratching her head wondering why there are food deserts in black neighborhoods.
Its because no grocery store can be successful if its thefts are higher than its sales. Duh!!
I could see if they opened up there, the street corner recreational pharmacists, would be pretty upset, and would most likely do some criminal acts toward the honest business men! Wonder how much it costs in political fees to open a dispensary?
It's only about the money. Now it's cash, later it will be subsidies, then they'll get their dispensaries.
What seems to be not noticed and not commented on is the number of black owned businesses that are opening in predominantly white areas in the city and suburbs. Why are they not opening businesses in black areas? Granted someone can have a business anywhere, but I find this telling.
My favorite Marijuana desert is a Dove Bar, rolled in crushed Doritos.
C'mon....in da hood pot is more available and cheaper than medical marijuana.
i wouldn't a dope store in those areas either, it's econimics. The "legal" price will be exorbitant compared to buying the ditch weed from some moron on a street corner
The black Chicago citizens in the south and west side need to start policing their own communities. Change the environment and perhaps businesses wIll open in their neighborhoods. Why invest is a community that has no respect for self or their community. Cry racism all they want but the bottom line is that the Overall perception of black people living in these areas, is that they are unable to be productive lawful members of society. Not all black areas are like this but a majority of the areas that deter investors from opening businesses have to take a hard look at the risks not only for their business but also for their employees. Wake up black communities -- start turning in the bad guys for their crimes, challenge gang members and the drug dealers and change the national perception people have of your communities; and then, perhaps businesses will invest in your neighborhoods.
They can put a cannabis vending machine in the lobby of 005, 004, 003, 002 & 006....problem solved...
Exactly the reason . All the food desert once had many jewels, high lows , dominicks . You can't stay in business when everyone , shoppers , some employees are robbing you blind .
I'm sure my crazy uncle would love to open a dispensary. He won't make any profit because all of that would go up in smoke.
Yeah, let's open up a weed store in the ghetto, what could possibly go wrong? Can they set up to accept EBT cards?
Lets see, I open a weed shop in a bidness desert. I got high-grade, high-potency inventory in a 'hood chock full of rats, er, mean, residents with a tooth for it.
I got big wads of cashola.
Gee what could be wrong with this picture that a private army of uzi-armed security guards couldn't fix?
Could I be price competitive with the one-person, no rent, no utilities, no taxes pharmacies which are 4 to a corner in my l'il bidness district?
Sounds like anybody not opening a weed shop in a Chicongo NGZ (no-go-zone) gotta be crazy & a real stoooopid bidnessman too
Somebody trying to make the drug dealer work for minimum wage,or take his job from him, tell me it ain't so and pay taxes,Aw Hell Naw!
Oops! It's "Marijuana Deserts" not desserts.
I thought it was about the Alice B. Toklas cannabis brownies in that old Peter Sellers Movie.
My Bad.
"...potential vendors didn’t even try."
They've looked at how the liquor stores have to be run, and they see the scratched-at, pried-up, dished-in steel doors on a lousy hair weave seller, with 19 different locks from top to bottom.
Hood gon go crazy when there be a whole sto fulla skunk, right down the street. "Entitlement" will come in the usual stolen minivan, smashed though the door and then abandoned as the offenders scatter like roaches, droppin s__t all over the place...

Morse Avenue. They drove a Jewel right out of business, and the nice bulk-bin organic food store right next to it, too.
Idiots at Dominicks's on Ridge started running a shuttle bus from Morse into their store...and very quietly discontinued it after a short time.
Any business in North Lawndale is threatened, the difference is that most of them are corrupt and will steal, kill lie to stay in business.
Mexican drug cartels already provide good pot to ghetto .
Chicago a sanctuary city .
"And the folks - or people - who applied for the licenses aren't that stupid."
Unlike the journalists who write about it.
"i wouldn't a dope store in those areas either, it's econimics. The "legal" price will be exorbitant compared to buying the ditch weed from some moron on a street corner"
Until they start issuing WBT (Weed Benefit Transaction) cards.
No business thrives in the ghetto. Ask any of the former top law enforcement bosses who are now part of the pot business.
The white folks don't want to compete against the brothers selling legal weed. Keeping the black man down even in the legal dope game.

There's always someone clean to be the front man. You must be new to Chicago.
We should lower the amount of the welfare checks, and start handing out high-grade THC laced weed. . . . and some chips. The unemployed, unemployable, those who never wanted to work anyways, and those who thanks to their criminal convictions will never work legitimately again, will just sit in front of the television all day stoned out of their heads. Crime will go down, diabetes and obesity will go up. but crime will go down.

How many white crooks have you turned in?
There's a dispensary coming to my neighborhood. Let them have one in their neighborhood.
Lol @ "Marijuana Deserts."
So...
Some of the connected catered to constituents are crying racism regarding "Weed Sto' " franchises in the garden spots of Chicago?
...The beer is chilling and the Jiffy-Pop is jumpin' cuz the ass-beatings, maimings, killings, fire-bombings, bullets-through-the-windows, kidnappings and robberies behind this dumb shit promise to be very entertaining.
>Surveillance video of a raggedy POS van being backed through the rear wall and m/fers spilling out
all over like frenzied beetles<
National Geographic type shit.
Anything of living flesh will be gnawed to a skeleton...
"Where da muthafuckin' weed an' da loot at, Joe?"
This shit...
Will be a laugh riot.

WHOOOO!
Just wait until the usual hard-heads and swing-dicks hatch that "fool-proof" plan (over some weed an' some drank ;^) to hit a lick at one of these dispensaries...
Marijuana Deserts in black areas? LOL, if that isn't a joke. You can buy pot, crack and heroin on every fucking corner. Who the fuck are they kidding?

An instance where the demand for group accountability is the refuge for the intellectually lazy?
Intelligent self-starters of all stripes reject this kind of thinking from the get-go...
