Protests Today at Homan Square

Plaintiff attorneys are amazed at the Homan Square story - they don't believe a lot of it:
  • Allegations that the Chicago Police Department abuses the rights of people that police detain for questioning have been a central element of the notorious police misconduct issues in this city for decades.

[...] So when a British newspaper published a series of articles last week alleging that the Police Department uses its Homan Square facility on the West Side as a "CIA-style interrogation black site" where detainees disappear for hours on end, the claim left many experienced criminal defense and civil rights attorneys scratching their heads.

  • Richard Dvorak, a veteran criminal defense attorney, said the problem was widespread, but he was unaware of any issue unique to Homan Square.

[...] Craig Futterman, a University of Chicago law professor who has spent years researching — and litigating — police misconduct cases in Chicago, said the "black site" rhetoric may be an exaggeration that obscures the broader problem.

He echoed the claim by Dvorak that police routinely play cat-and-mouse games with detainees and their right to legal representation at district stations and detective area headquarters all over the city.

Robert Loeb, a criminal defense attorney who teaches at DePaul University College of Law, said Homan Square may actually be less likely than detective area headquarters to have long-standing problems with improper detention and interrogation techniques. Many of the arrests handled through Homan Square are narcotics-related, cases that tend to rely less on the need for witness or suspect statements that often prompt prolonged detentions.

The typical Homan Square cases are "not the kinds of cases where they're holding people for so long," Loeb said. "If it was huge numbers (of complaints, lawyers) would be hearing it all the time."
Really, when you have to take Craig Futterman's word over protestors, that's kind of sad. But that isn't stopping the drama-queens.
They've got all sorts of protests planned for 1500 hours today with 800-to-1,000 people saying they're going to show up and shut it down. Hopefully, someone tipped off downtown.

Come on SCC, you have to have better reading comprehension abilities than that, even if you have knocked back a few before posting the quotes from within this article. They said the problems aren't specific to Homan Square, not that the problems are nonexistent.

The headline alone indicated that they believe the allegations:
"Lawyers wary of claim about Chicago police 'black site,' say abuse citywide"

"Richard Dvorak, a veteran criminal defense attorney, said the problem was widespread, but he was unaware of any issue unique to Homan Square.

"Everything that was described (in the Guardian story) was something that happens every day," he said. "I think it's pretty systemic throughout CPD.""

Its funny these protestors live in a fantasy world where the believe Anything online. Nobody thinks for themselves anymore, they just read a story and boom it's all fact. It just goes to show how easily people can be brainwashed by the media.

But I do love the troll who keeps calling it holman square...that guy is hilarious

How in God's name do they plan to shut it down? Park the swat vehicles around it and let's see them shut it down. Plus, aren't law-abiding citizens supposed to be happy about getting gangs and drugs off their streets?

If I still worked there I'd think twice about leaving my car anywhere but in the fenced lot, and probably not even there. Have the wife or husband drive you.

When I worked there and we had lengthy investigations, we went out and spent our own money to bring the mutts food and drink, not to mention drinks and snacks in between....and 20 bathroom runs with them.

Plus, you have to see the front desk as soon as you bring someone in and log them, or you can't even get a key to an interview room to put them in. Puhllleeeese with the b.s. already. You have to sign out the shackles too, as it's part of the rules that they wear them.

VERY interesting to me that a extremely thinly-sourced hit piece on institutional police brutality in Chicago appears right before the mayoral election, in a extreme-left British newspaper.

I'm guessing Rahmbo isn't commie ENOUGH for a lot of the leftys in the world, and they want to replace him with The Jesus. That's gotta hurt poor Tiny Dancer a lot.

Its the weekend and "big" investigations are not conducted on the weekends. You just as many Saturday & Sunday days off groupies as 35th Street. Long term investigations rarely occur on the weekend so this human rights awareness protest will be a bust.

Maybe the spinners on 35th Street can roll out a story that plainclothes officers were advised to stay away the facility this and every weekend for this matter as not to reveal their deep undercover identities. This can counter the claims those assigned to this facility rarely are seen in public doing actual police work or even seen showing up to the workplace. Maybe there can be a special ComStat forum on Holman Square house mices and polices to reveal those contact card mission results in a yearly breakdown statistical power point presentation. ComStat is number driven so lets compare that "arrest" activity from those Holman Squares to lets say those bottom of the barrel blue shirts who put in a full day of work everyday including those weekends.

    The REAL CPD BLACK OPS,
    OFF THE MAP,
    NOT ON THE BOOKS,
SUPERSECRET DUNGEON and INTEROGATION (Torture) CENTER
    is located in....

(cue the music from the MATRIX)

...the Third Sub Basement of Gary's Condo Building.

After a hard day at work, belittling bosses at Comstat meetings, kissing politicians asses, lying about crime states to the troops, the press and the media he likes nothing better than to go down there, change into his black dago-T, black BDU pants and steel toed combat boots. He chooses a stick, a rubber hose or cattle prod out of the basket and has one of his secret minions drag an unlucky prisoner that has disappeared from the streets, chains him to the wall and “interrogates” him at length about the Lindbergh Kidnapping or what ever happened to Baby Jane. There are curious questions regarding picking one’s feet in Poughkeepsie. The beatings and the screaming will go on long into the night but down there is no night, no day in that twilight world. At the Gary feels like a new man.

If he runs out of prisoners he sends out a car to the west or south side for more. Until they return there is a shooting gallery down there. It has moving targets, of New York City street lights.

Now let Amnesty International and the protestors picket there.

You can find the "hipster" in its transplanted habitat on milwaukee ave area, pilsen and near 31st and morgan. They finally made it to the "big city" and are so in tune with society, race issues and art. they are the do gooders of the world... Trying to prove that they are real hip city dwellers.. In reality they are not from chicago at all. They grew up in the burbs and other states like wisconsin, michigan, ohio, iowa and so on. They finally made it to the "big city" and are soooo culturally aware. Im sure they LOVE going back home to visit and tell everyone how much they have evolved into city life and are just a regular urban king. Puds and posers.. all of them. I LOVE watching these people. I also love when I see a drunk hipster try to get into a fight with a normal dude... Its pure hilarity. The normal actual city dweller who grew up in a normal sw or nw side neighborhood just decimates the hipster every single time. I love it. pure pussies.

Well Lt Eve Gushes tells officers if they plan to go to the officers funeral they will have to put in a slip and drive their personal cars. WTF?? When in the history of the Chicago Police Department has anyone ever been denied to go to a fellow officers funeral while on duty?? This freak is so out of control, somebody's got to do something about her. Can somebody please remove the brick and allow her to to transfer anywhere. She makes our lives a living hell because she's so damn fat and miserable

I was a "boss" and yes ... I always let the troops go on-duty to police officer's funerals. They were normally on days, we weren't that busy (I worked west) and not ALL the coppers went. Part of our tradition. Not letting officers go to a friend's funeral while their working is just another nail in the coffin of a once great department.

The church ceremony was from 1100-1200. Officers asked to stop to view the body pay respects or be at St. Judes. Nobody asked to leave for 4 hours.

That creep Andy Thayer was down at Homan screeching like a deflowered bitch about some nonsense. Oh Christ that pathetic pussy of a man was obnoxious. His employer, Loevy and Loevy was probably dropping business cards all over the area.

He needed a diaper change he was pissing himself at the thought of having something to protest.

Yeah OK. But, I hope some folks here will take my side if I am taken out of my home, taken to a secret detention center, then weatherboarded for taking a Republican ballot and for once writing a letter to the Editor of the Sun Times arguing that Jessie Jackson wasn't a real "reverend"

    :-)

    God bless

Maybe they could tell rahm , 4 years later and 3 men still change three alley light bulbs a day .
He didn't know that , and yes ballerina every station has caps office and dozens of police officers hiding in it .

So Homan Square is now Gitmo North!??!

When even the bottom feeding cops-sueing attorneys call it BS, you know it must be bogus. This sounds like an article that should have published in "The Onion."

They will never find out that the old 10th District station at 23rd & Damen, that looks abandon, is where all the real "Special Ops" interrogations occur.

The CPD "BS SS" (Black Shirt Special Services) officers have to enter with a blindfolded "subject" through the rear of the also "abandoned" My Mistake Tavern, go down into the tavern sub-basement, walk through a tunnel under Damen, and into the most sophisticated setup since U.N.C.L.E. or CONTROL.

...and of course one of them just had to be Loevy and Loevy's all-purpose protestor, Andy Thayer. Heard him on the radio news, braying about something for five seconds.

    2/28/2015 02:19:00 PM

    No.
These are the people who can't be bothered to vote because it's inconvenient. Or because they're waiting in long lines for their multi-syllable half-caf skinny latte orders.

OT.....anyone find it peculiar that supervisors involved in the Koschman fiasco are instructing homicide investigation classes for veterans and new detectives?

    2/28/2015 07:59:00 PM

Yes, that was very peculiar. They didn't have anything interesting or informative to say either, but they try to sell themselves as the best in the department. They were the lamest part of the training.

You know what they say: those who can--do. those who can't--teach.

I am the working police. I work 1st watch in a busy district. Even though it is cold as Antartica out there, myself and my partner are out there working. I think of it like working on commission. Every dope, gun, 501, etc. I get is a court date. Court= money $$$$$ Money is what it is all about.

    2/28/2015 05:06:00 PM

I see you're at the stage of trying to justify your silly behavior by claiming that court is your motivation. So you have somewhere between 5-7 years on and should know better but you can't control yourself because the job is like a video game to you that satisfies your need for adrenaline rushes. Why don't you just admit that you love the job and get your jollies off of locking people up because you're a hand job? The court thing is really a lame excuse.

Another fine example of American Journalism. The Guardian is a British Tabloid, like the Enquirer. Aliens have landed in Grant Park. Not the Illegal kind. No vetting of stories. All taken from one of the three guys that wanted to throw Malitov Cocktails at the Police who was charged and convicted. Secret? Not so secret. All of the drug seizures and major gang and narcotics case press conferences are held at Homan. Pretty secret. Don't hear any of the local Media outlets discounting this story for the farce it is. I guess the press and the west and south side Political types don't want any more gang/drug cases. Most likely because it takes away from their cut in the end of the day.

I know this whole story is a joke and that we are having a good time with it but for them to be there protesting against us pisses me off. I was thinking about joining before this fairy tale was foisted on the public but now? Never. Once again. Fuck You Oath Keepers!

I've got one better, in the 7th district one of our long time officers passed away (18 years in 7) recently transferred to 20.

    2/26/2015 12:53:00 AM

Pathetic. Sounds like she may have some selfesteem issues. Angry woman with power2/26/2015 12:56:00 PM

Sorry, guys, a wake - yes, but four hours to go on duty to a non line of death funeral?

    2/26/2015 08:07:00 PM

I was a "boss" and yes ... I always let the troops go on-duty to police officer's funerals. They were normally on days, we weren't that busy (I worked west) and not ALL the coppers went. Part of our tradition. Not letting officers go to a friend's funeral while their working is just another nail in the coffin of a once great department.

    2/27/2015 09:18:00 AM

to 2/26/2015 08:07:00 PM, nobody said anything about going for 4 hours. The viewing of the body(wake) was from 10a.m. to 11 a.m. with St. Judes from1045-1100. The church ceremony was from 1100-1200. Officers asked to stop to view the body pay respects or be at St. Judes. Nobody asked to leave for 4 hours.

    2/28/2015 08:47:00 PM

The problem is somebody has to work the streets. Everybody can't go and how do you decide who goes? If it means that much, take time. I'm sure she would have granted time due. This sense of entitlement is out of control. I'm also sick of people wanting to go to wakes on company time that have nothing to do with the Police. The best is when they are gone for 4 or 5 hours and bitch about having not gotten a lunch.

I'd like to protest myself, goddamnit. Sears used to be 10% off for police. Refrigerators, washers, air conditioners, fishing rods, back to school clothes. Every little bit helps. Now nothing. Even Polk Brothers is gone.

Black site? You ever been in that neighborhood? You notice anything white about it?

    &&&&&&&&&&&&

I kinda have to agree with the young fella though. I still lock people up and I have 26 years on. Now, I don't nearly do the kind of arrests I did in the end of the 80s and 90s because it's way different now but I still stop people and get some arrests. Not a ton of arrests but I will go for anything that will get me a little bit of court. Might as well I'm working midnights so court is a way to make money. I like vri and did it a little while but I like my days off too much. So court is still a great alternative to get some extra money socked away for retirement in 2 and a half years. The kid is right, this job is all about money as it should be. Money provides for the family And one day when retirement comes God willing you will have a nice chunk of change set aside
