Streets Still Suck

  • Chicago police and paramedics are having the same issues navigating the city as everyone else – side streets aren’t plowed and the snow often sits higher than the bottom of cars.

“We haven’t had any issues I’m aware of other than the fact it’s a pain in the neck,” a Chicago police supervisor said. “And everybody’s dealing with that."

Police Department supervisors have been warning patrol officers of the risks of getting stuck and to avoid traveling side streets.

Some officers are parking their cars at intersections, putting on their lights and walking to calls in the middle of blocks if the snow is too high, police said.
General Services failed to clear many parking lots in a timely manner, so entire watches had to push squads, vans and SUVs out to the streets. PPO's and some officers were given shovels and told to clear pathways to the streets. On a brighter note, we did see garbage trucks outfitted as plows. We get it, it's a blizzard, the fifth largest on record, but during an event like this, it's easy to see where Rahm (and previously, Shortshanks) skimped on spending.

Congratulations moron what would have cost a few minutes of shoveling probably cost a few grand to fix the truck when it does finally crap out. smh

I live in Mt. Greenwood and I have had a plow on my street plowing and salting about 4 times. I live on a sidestreet. Took a drive through the neighborhood and ive got to say they did a nice job. Its not curb to curb, but not bad. Its the lazy people out there who shovel all the plowed snow back into the middle of the street instead of blowing it up on the grass parkway. S and S has done good down here at least... dont know about the rest of the city.

I'm tired of the news media reporting that the side streets are getting plowed. Monday afternoon we finally saw a plow go down our street. All the truck did was flatten the snow and put down a heavy layer of salt. Nothing was cleared especially the intersections and the street is no easier to drive down. But you better have your sidewalk shoveled or you'll be ticketed. Tired of this mayor spending our money on what he wants and skimping on things like plowing. Time for him to go. Not LEO and not voting for the little dictator.

I live on a side street. Three hours of clearing snow last night, two hours more today. Cleared out the spaces in front of my house, and part of the street. About 6:00pm, the plow comes and pushes the snow right back onto everything I cleared. I just had to laugh. At least it came.

Good to see Englewood is a top concern, the side streets up in the 17th didn't get any attention until late this evening.

“The city did their thing,” said Elige Scott, 33, of Englewood. “They did it. When I woke up, my street was clear. I saw the trucks out. They really did it.”

In Englewood and Auburn Gresham, some people said they were pleased to find their main streets plowed clean and salted and some of the side streets plowed too. But in other neighborhoods, like Bronzeville and Woodlawn, some roads were impassable. Drivers hustled and sweated to dig out cars that were stuck in the middle of the streets.

This can't be true can it?
This flies in the face of all of Rahm's numerous recent press conferences where he's standing at snow command, with his sleeves rolled up for show, looking and pointing at maps etc. If you listen to RAHM and his yes men the city has worked miracles with this storm.
I'm sure Rahm's block doesn't have a flake of snow left on it ..... as for the rest of the Sheeple RAHM wants your vote!
Remember anybody, and I do mean anybody, but Rahm.

No problem up here in Wisconsin SCC. I can't even remember how many times I saw a county plow truck come down my street and plow it. Probably at least five or six times. Plus, the drivers plowed curb to curb. I can't tell you how much that impresses me after living in Chicago all my life and watching those political hacks in Chicago plow one path right down the middle of the street, never curb to curb despite the fact that THERE WERE NEVER ANY CARS PARKED ON THE STREET BECAUSE EVERYONE HAD A DRIVEWAY.
The streets up here for the most part are wet but clear of snow. Yesterday I had to go into Chicago on business. Just for shits and giggles, we drove past our old house in Chicago. Thank God I have a Jeep because if I had a regular car I'd still be there stuck in the snow. Snow about twelve inches high with drifts even higher. It looked like a street in Siberia.
It is borderline criminal the way the city treats it's residents. It was apparent that they had not seen a plow truck on their street since the snow began falling. As I drove around the city I saw scenes that reminded me of WWII where we saw peasants walking the streets gathering up firewood, something to burn so that their families would not be cold only here it was people shoveling out their cars or other people with shovels on their shoulders going door to door trying to earn some money by shoveling out driveways or parked cars. I felt bad for them but then again I guess they are ok with the service the city provides to them because they keep re-electing the same democratic pieces of shit who are sticking it to them.

Never have seen the total lack of snow equipment on side streets, live west end of 008 watched ambulance 12 get stuck on side street while engine 132 had to get it out, what if they had a major health event dying patient in the back who could be saved if at the hospital on time? What a disgrace, people you know the rare who pay taxes stuck everywhere, but no salting! Who runs streets and sanitation plow division? Way to cut money former deputy chief of CPD drawing a huge pension now a double dip into another pension as you take more pension money?

Election season is here if after all the destruction rahm has done and you vote for him you deserve what you get! Anyone but rahm, even Karen Lewis stood up to him, not the smartest woman but she definitely has the "testicular fortitude" lacking in many!

"The plow comes and pushes the snow right back onto everything I cleared. I just had to laugh."

This is always how the City of Chicago handles side streets.

If the city adopted an "A" and "B" street parking plan for snow removal or sounded a horn to alert residents that the snow plow was coming and towed cars to complete the snow removal, there were probably be altercations and shootings and arrests.

Overall, Rahm's snow removal efforts rate a "D-." The mistake was that the plows were not dispatched earlier on Sunday (probably because the ballerina did not want to pay overtime). The worst aspect were the constant announcements about the side streets being cleared or about to be cleared when it was not happening at all.

Hey 6:28 , take it up with the ward superintendent Al Cacciottolo.

The whole area from Harlem to Austin went unplowed until yesterday afternoon and even then, they salted and that was it.

Maybe he was ordered to the east end so Zalewski will look better to the hispanic areas for the election, because after being surprised how fast they cleaned after the light snows earlier this year, they completely blew our area off.

Zalewskis polling numbers probably needed a boost on the east end so Cacciottolo blew us off.

Got out for a while and took a drive after some serious shoveling. North Western Avenue looked like a shit show and that is an important street. One open lane (left) in each direction in many places with the other lane (right) a mess and parked cars buried closer to the curb. Side streets were hit and miss. Good clean up for the aldermanic relatives, not so much for everybody else.

Came home to find the city finally plowed the street and pushed the snow into all of the parking spaces that the neighbors had shoveled earlier.

Get a friend to pour couple watering cans full of cold water on the snow in front of his garage before he goes to clear it.

There's nothing like chopping through an ice floe to make someone's day. Not illegal, not dumping, just cold water.

He sounds like a sad excuse for a human being, by the way. All my neighbors are helping each other, not making more work for each other.

So so many posts about the horrible mayor Rahm Emanuel. The fact that he is going to screw you out of your pensions with some kind of bullshit legal maneuver and the fact that he is like DiBlasio and will hang you all out to dry doesn't seem to matter to the FOP. He will back his cop hating, lying, whining, lazy constituents over the patrolman doing his job. And your FOP lacks the courage to endorse a man who is going to stand up for you. Rahm will support the scum who will take your pension and your home because you did something to violate his rights while you were protecting your partner or a citizen. It really seems like the cowards at the FOP do not have the courage to stand up to a petty hustler that is the mayor. Every vote tha tRahm or Chuy gets is a vote against the police----I cannot understand why they are so gutless. Do not think your cowardice in not endorsing Fioretti will do you a damn bit of good with Rahm or Mr. Hands up don't shoot Garcia. They will both chose the criminal---it is in their DNA. I urge you all to do the right thing and vote for Fioretti as your life depends on it---because it does. As Rahm says always--"Do it for the children". Yes---Vote for Fioretti for your children---the other two will not have their back either.

To the 05:20 post about your neighbor dumping his snow onto your garage, well the 3 foot apron, which is the area of your concrete that touches the alley is YOUR PROPERTY, and therefore since he is a big enough A_HOLE have the police lock him up for trespass, or just get a guy with a plow truck to bury his garage, me, I would flood the hell out of his garage.

Congratulations moron what would have cost a few minutes of shoveling probably cost a few grand to fix the truck when it does finally crap out.

Where do they keep the shovels in the squad? In the trunk next to the car jack, PPE kit and Beat Binder?

LOTS of eyewitness reports of plows-up, non-salting trucks driving up streets, then the City website suddenly shows that block got done.

The truck's GPS shows they 'serviced' your street, so the City website reports it as plowed, even though it wasn't touched.

GREAT SCAM.

WBBM radio is running around at this hour asking S&S "about the people who are still waiting for a plow to come by their street."

Ain't it something. GPS on everything, maps on the Web "for the public," and the bastards will run the route but not drop their blade.

Keep it up. Next -- robot plows operated from a satellite, on the same "grid system" used for trash pickups.

Don't laugh. Even the people at low-end places like Bank Of America and McDonald's are looking over their shoulders with increasing frequency...

Waste Management won't pick up a broken chair or couch, a mattress, or your broken bookcase. Waste management won't haul a few pieces of drywall or broken tree branches or yard waste.

And Waste management isn't used part-time as a plow with a quick hitch or as a makeshift snow-tamping tool in the alleys of Chicago.

You're stuck about fifteen years in the past, if you think the garbage crews aren't working their tails off these days.

Boston had double the amount of snow, is a smaller city with less employees to clean and less equipment ,yet just a little over 36 hours after the storm, streets were cleaned, business back to normal, this little weasel mayor and his cadre of TV face people have no clue how to clean the streets, first off, why have parking laws that saw no parking after 2 inches of snow and then not ticket and tow, don't you readers now say it is because of ELECTION TIME, the city which by the way includes us THE POLICE just don't enforce the law. we the police are too good or too busy to write these violators a ticket, Fuck these people who just don't care and park anywhere, and 2nd, what about the side streets, Rahm looked directly into the cameras Sunday Night, Monday Morning and even Monday night and said the side streets and alleys will be done, when the sun melts it ? This city just gets worse and worse.

2/03/2015 05:53:00 PM

Uh, Boston made the national news tonight about their LACK of ability to keep up with snow removal in their history-making storm. And it was a city official being interviewed who stated they couldn't keep up and their budget for the year was already close to blown. The video showed a similar situation as ours.
For comparison, though, Boston's streets are much narrower than ours, parking is really congested and much of the town is hilly.
Our snow was half what Boston got, the roads are wider, the terrain is level and we had ample warning.

"Get a friend to pour couple watering cans full of cold water on the snow in front of his garage before he goes to clear it.

There's nothing like chopping through an ice floe to make someone's day. Not illegal, not dumping, just cold water."

That might have been the OP's tip!

"the 3 foot apron, which is the area of your concrete that touches the alley is YOUR PROPERTY, and therefore since he is a big enough A_HOLE have the police lock him up for trespass"

As a Non-LEO, I will consider that a valuable tip!

"or just get a guy with a plow truck to bury his garage"

I attended 2 debates with the 3 canadate that are running . ..The fireman /policeman NAPOLITANO can not answer any of the concerns that the people of the ward have . .Please don't put a person In as alderman when he has no clue as to what is going on and as to what the ward really needs...This Joe Lomanto is honestly the answer and more importantly the best qualified for the job...Just being a fireman or a nice guy doesn't make you a good alderman or a smart business man..If you were at either of the debates, you would know that what I'm saying is correct . .

I don't agree, though, that if you're not helping others, you belong in cuffs.
I often shovel my neighbor's place after I do mine, but this time around, I have the flu. Not shoveling much of anything - mine, or anyone else's -this time around. Sick, old, injured, not in town -- all good reasons not to be helping.
So, there are sometimes good reasons people don't help, but there's NO reason to be a hindrance to others.

"I'm tired of the news media reporting that the side streets are getting plowed. Monday afternoon we finally saw a plow go down our street. "

Amen to that. I read in the Tribune online Sunday that the side streets would all be plowed by Monday evening. What a crock of shit. I knew it was BS when I read it, of course, but the Rahm-hole propagates this shit, and the media just eats it up! Most of the side streets I was on in 016 just plain suck. They weren't plowed at all. Sure, I've seen a city truck or two, yellow lights flashing, filled up to the hilt with salt, and big plow blade on the front- looking very impressive! But wait- why is the blade off the ground? Why no salt coming out of the ass-end? WTF? Same crap in some notorious Section 8 suburbs, like Skokie, too. They probably think they're fooling everyone, making it look like they are actually doing something, when all it is- is a great big illusion. When I mentioned it to a couple of neighbors, they said "No, we saw the plow- they are out!" But they weren't so sure what exactly it was doing, besides just driving along with its yellow lights flashing. Just wasting fuel, and OT tax dollars apparently.

2/03/2015 12:05:00 AM

Oh friggin cry more. Like the Comptroller would give us the day off with pay.

I was at work every day the week of the 2011 blizzard. And they kept us on all week doing "retraining" and "studying."

We have a new Assistant Director, and that individual wanted us out enforcing despite the weather conditions.

We had a 50% call off of City staff on Monday. Those that did report for duty stayed in the Squad room until about 8:30am. We skipped Rush Hour on the morning shift for the vehicles that were plowed in. We didn't write the 2" snow ban tickets. All we did for the day shift was check meters and parking lot city sticker enforcement. Tuesday I didn't work, took the day off because. Today we rolled out at about 8:15am. Since the lack of Plowing on the side streets it pretty evident, very few 1/15 expired plate tickets are getting issued in the neighborhoods and on the no rush hour main drags due to a shit ton of snow being plowed up over most parked cars plates. They don't pay me to clean your car off to check your plates or for your city sticker.

Keep track of the snowfall. 7 days for each vehicle in one spot and then the abandoned/not moved ticket can be issued.

If I was an alderman, I'd go out and buy a Jeep (out of my own pocket) paint it Chicago Blue, and have my name and ward on the doors. I'd put a plow on it and do the side streets myself. Once the side streets were done, then I'd do the driveways of the elderlyAnd then I'd get re-elected.doing arterials is a moot point if you can't get to them. Commie Rahmie failed miserably on this storm. Two days after the storm he decided to have to full complement of equipment dispatched. Bilandic now Rahm.

Tunney is a bigger stroke than Burnett or Mell...but not quite as big as O'Shea or Burke.

Wants Street Cleaning tickets issued...wants RPP enforced...wants meters checked "for turnover" and Whines like a Bi#ch if you ticket for anything else...

Called the Desk the other day whining that someone 'he knew" got a parker for parking in a Bus Stop for Starbucks....I also hear he has a battle with Revenue going on since 2011 about who he "allows" to work in HIS holy ward.
