Mary "Mope-rah" Mitchell is a fact of life. We use her as a convenient foil for things. She's an ignorant, leftist, liberal (but we repeat ourselves) media troll. Not particularly talented by any stretch of the imagination, blinkered by the prejudices and hatred she brings to the table, involving perceived slights and supposedly entrenched/institutionalized biases. Unfortunately, this doesn't keep her from making a living at the Slum-Times, but as the print media dies a slow death, she probably won't be getting rich at it.
Once in a great while though, she seems to make sense. Or at least, somehow realizes that something in her narrow little world is amiss. We won't say she gets introspective because that would give her too much credit, but she comes close with this column (no link - she still doesn't deserve it):

When Toya Graham, a single mother of six, saw her son on the news participating in the riot that erupted in Baltimore earlier this week, she took quick action.
Graham waded into the middle of the chaos at Mondawmin Mall where dozens of young people were engaged in an all-out riot and confronted the boy. Graham repeatedly struck him and demanded that he take off his mask.
Graham is being praised by some as the “Mom of the Year” and condemned by others as a child abuser and partially to blame for the violence that was on full display in Baltimore this week.
Certainly an argument can be made on both sides of this issue.
A good opening, but Mary has already missed the key issue. She states it in the second line:

There it is, right there. You want to confront the problems (or at least the main problem) in the community today, you're going to have to start with that. The so-called "post racial" president isn't about to speak to it, Eric "Americans are cowards" Holder wouldn't touch it, Jesse "got my own baby-momma drama" Jackson isn't appropriate. Pretty much no one on the left is willing to address the dissolution of the family so prevalent in this voting bloc.

I'm giving Mom her respect. She said he is her only boy, and she has six children, and she realizes that was then and this is now and she doesn't want that kind of life anymore, for herself or her children. She said her children will NOT grow up to be looters or drug dealers.

It is always good to have liberal examples of how not to do it.
I hate to be negative about the Mother who hit her kid, because I believe she did the right thing.
What I would like to know is if they are on entitlements/ welfare? Chances are - they are.
What should be standard law across the board is that if someone in your immediate family messes up, you lose your LINK card. You lose your Free phone. You lose your.... you get the idea.
That would make parenting a lot more important to ALL the Moms and Dads out there.
All these people on TV are asking about where do we go from here and how do we fix Baltimore and Ferguson and wherever?

Single mother of six ends the debate right there, granted there are valid reasons for not being together but damn woman if you got more than one baby daddy your record is terrible with selecting men to have children with. Not a good look at all and it reduces the chances of success in life all around. I can agree with that aspect of it.

Recent media stories within Baltimore are highlighting that many of the looter/rioters are being released without charges.
The Head Baltimore Prosecutor in charge of making those decisions is Marilyn Mosby.

Now, you might also remember when the riots and looting broke out on Monday there was a City Councilman who told the police to move back from their positions. When the police did what the Councilman requested, the stores in the immediate area were looted.

Just A Citizen Says: When she said "I'm a mother of six" the first thing I thought was that we are all supporting her bad choices. And so the game continues. Listen, I'm glad she ran out there and dragged his ass out of it, but big deal. Why should she be praised and rewarded for doing what she is supposed to be doing, i.e., mothering. When did doing what is expected become such a big epic event with these people? Its just another insidious insight into the downfall of this culture. Reward those who are doing what they should be doing day in and day out.
Solutions? No one wants to discuss any possible solutions, just blame the police for all of the problems. It seems to me that in every predominantly black neighborhood/town/city in the country ( we could also talk about adding the Caribbean Islands), crime is high, violent and property types. Dropout rates are high, single mothers are in the majority and the black residents complain about police conduct. Is this some sort of great white national conspiracy or something else afoot here? Holder and Obama and their national advisor Sharpton just want to lecture people. And, lets not leave out the teachers unions which exist to give jobs to adults and not to give an education to the kids. I noticed in the video of the arrest of this icon of the community that when the idiot refused to walk on his own, dragged his legs and had to be lifted into the transport van. Pay attention to his head position. He's looking straight ahead with his chin up. No broken spine (at the neck as they said). He would not be able to accomplish this with an upper spine injury. He injured himself in that van and went overboard, probably uncontrollably slipped in a contorted manner.

She didn't parent, she damage controlled. If she parented she wouldn't have to go down there to get her son. Six kids to a single parent. That is THE problem.
If she was white; she would be placed under arrest for battery and abuse of child. DCF would be all over the place and the other rug rats would be taken away. I don't think this too far from the truth.
God bless that mother. If there were a neighborhood of mothers like her, then there wouldn't have been rioting and looting earlier this week in Baltimore. I heard on the news that one of her six kids (one of the five daughters) is in the Baltimore Police academy right now.

She admits the error of her earlier life. She says she doesn't want that for her kids and she will not allow them to live their lives like that. She works full-time and gives a lot of her time and effort to her church.
Instead of ripping on her, applaud the fact she knew she screwed up, she actually DID 'turn her life around', she raised her kids alone, she has one in the police academy and another one who she publicly humiliated who admits he deserved to be publicly humiliated.
She may have six kids, but she's done what we all bitch we 'wish' someone like her would do. She saw the problem in her life, addressed it and is making ALL the right moves to fix it.
Why was she the only one?
Where were all of the other parents? To hold one parent up to the status of 'hero' while thousands allow or condone riotous behavior in their kids...delusional.
Lazy, good-for-nothing parenting could be at the root of all of this... but let's blame the cops.
