Our e-mail and phone has been blowing up with a link to some site named "pastebin." It seems some hackers have accessed a city database and managed to snag personnel info, including the police department. They have made threats to leak the data unless the officers involved in the shooting of an armed assailant are not fired, arrested and prosecuted (evidently not having heard of a thing called "due process" or "justifiable shooting.")
The link we saw has released names of officers with the last name beginning with "A" and lists among other things:

All of this is already accessible to anyone with time or ability to write some scripts. Since our names are out there kuz of the Salary DB, anyone can then comb the web and link the data. Might not be any "hack" at all. No one site has that info. The DEPT doesn't have our facebook info. They don't know who are relatives are past who are in our emergency contacts. Pastbin site states right on it that it cooperates with authorities in cases where this shit happens.
Get used to it folks, this data is ALREADY OUT THERE. Google / Zabasearch / whitepages.com/neighbors . I'm just glad these dipshits did in manner which will be easy to trace (IF we care).

I saw the link. I saw a few names. I can see the dept site getting hacked but how was that information connected to exploit and breach social media accounts?
Did they steal the data from the Chinese, who stole it from the Obama Administration?

The best you can hope for is that the people that did not secure the data adequately and did not notice the data breach when it happened will somehow be able to track down the bad guys and recover the data, including all the copies of the data. For what it's worth pastebin.com isn't 'some random site on the interwebz', it's well-known as a place where hackers and dissidents post mostly-anonymous data dumps. Among other things, it's where a lot of major credit-card and password breaches wind up. It's a holiday weekend and I've drank too much for a really in-depth explanation, but the short version is pastebin doesn't require a persistent account so it's a lot harder for a blackhat to screw the pooch and reveal his true form than, say, Twitter or arguably even Wikileaks. Though that isn't entirely a bad thing, assuming one has a healthy distrust of Mark Zuckerberg's near-monopoly on user-submitted Web content...
When in doubt, it's usually a good idea to assume the leak is legit because the reality of information security is that any data that has a physical path to the Internet is relatively easy to get at. Eventually people will figure out that online records are a really bad idea, but it'll get a lot worse before it gets better.

Why is the city researching the worth of my home and my social media friends? I'm sure none of it is correct anyway.
Hacker? A little effort and knowledge of where to look and most of this is public record. Name, salary, job title - publicly available online. Addresses mostly accessible via Cook County Tax Records, all online, if the name isn't "John Smith" or "Juan Perez"or you bought your house through a shell corporation. Name of spouse also shows up on the house's tax record. From there, it's mostly just turning up data and connecting it to the right person. All those Ancestry.com pages, obituaries, birth announcements, wedding announcements in the church bulletin, lists of honor students - that stuff doesn't go away, it's all online. One legal name from a public database of government employees (searchable AND downloadabl) and that's all it takes. No hacker needed. I'm sure it's easier if you have a hacker, but if someone is looking for you and using the Internet, they can find you. As careful as people try to be online, they can't control everywhere their name might pop up. And once it does, any competent researcher can have your whole life in front of them with a little effort and time.
Luckily, thugs are short on effort, time, and connections to professional researchers. Honestly, though? Don't ever assume that you have control over the information that's out there about you.

Here's a question for you SCC, if this information was taken from the city database then does that mean the city also has every officers Facebook information on file as well as our friends on Facebook? How is this allowed? What privacy rules have been breeched in the process? Also, will the city be paying for all employees to move and have their information stricken from every Web site? I don't think so. Lastly, what encryption process will be put into place in the future to ensure that our data is secure? That's just of the top of my head but it seems like yes are logical questions that need answers.

Why did they not inform officers of this leak? Why are they not threatening to sue and prosecute the owners of the site hosting the stolen data? Don't blame pastebin for gosh sakes. They guy who runs it is extremely humble, and does it to help out a chronically ill family member. It is widely used for sharing software code samples online because it is fast, anonymous, and just works.
If someone is threatening to use it to release confidential information, there is nothing much you can do about it except inform the FBI, and they can watch for it, and perhaps trace it. Be glad they told you where to look. What realistic crook does that? They just do it.
Is it really a breach? Much of the data was already out there, and these hackers may have just combined and cross referenced available property records and the City's posting of salary to name. Not that I would defend the City awarding contracts for security of their data to the lowest bidder, or relative/friend of Daley or Rahm. The Real Issue is that in this day and age of way too much disclosure of information, cops need to consider what they put out there. No Sworn Officer should be on Facebook. Now my kid argues with me that there are safeguards that I do not understand, and of course there are. However, family photos, birthdays, personal stuff just should not be posted. This information is all available without a data breach. It's always been out there. Our salaries are public record, as are everyone's real estate transactions. You can find anyone's phone number, and social media is obviously open season for anyone. There's nothing the department can do to stop any of it.
Have been through this type of thing before within the dept. Nothing will be done unless you are harmed in anyway. No extra security measures, no special attentions, nothing.

The only way to prevent this type of breach is to have two set's of information in two different places. Each place has security, but one just numbers and codes that identify an individual. Some years back, coppers involved in very sensitive investigations would give a name different from their own to the telephone company and request it be published. Billing would be in your real name. This worked just fine. Again the telephone company kept two sets of info. So it was up to an officer to give fictitious info and be billed with the correct info. The same process could be used in the departments computers and security. Let them hack fictitious information and protect the other info with numbers and codes. Old school deception in the new world of communication.

I'm actually stunned this hasn't happened sooner. I'm a firefighter and the data portals for records and communications at Chicago's firehouses could be described as a joke, but there's nothing funny about it.
The speed makes me long for the days of AOL dial up, it's that slow. One I logged onto recently was running a WINDOWS 98 program. Windows 98. That is NOT a misprint.
And while most city agencies can cry poor, the OEMC and data managers can't with the tens of millions flowing into this system. If you have a 2 phone plan registered in the city you pay a $2.50 Chicago City 911 fee, and an additional $3.10 Chicago MTT fee for a total of $5.60 each and every month. That's just 2 phone numbers in a city of millions of them.
So if money to fix the problem isn't the problem, then what's the problem?

If our home address is leaked then any criminal element can terrorize us or our family. Also, once it goes online, it will stay on the internet forever. This is one reason why I am not on Facebook. Therein lies the problem. Antiquated software, software that's not updated... A hackers wet dream.
Some of the information was from dept computers other info was taken from publicly accessible databases. Yes anyone can get an address by doing an Internet search but how would they know if he/she is an officer? If you have a common name there is no way to know if the search result is a PO or not. By hacking the depts computer, they obtained our actual addresses. Facebook, google and other website profiles were obtained through other means, not from dept computers.
I can guarantee you that whoever hacked into the servers already hacked those Facebook accounts and saved all those pictures of little Johnny. People! Wake the fuck up and stop posting your entire life on social media! The info on pastebin is down for now but will likely pop up somewhere else if it already hasn't, and they will likely continue to post more. Don't treat their threats as b.s.

That would be nice. But once a piece of data goes on the internet, it stays there forever. With this sort of information, hundreds of websites that promote terrorism to domestic terrorism to right wing to left wing groups would create "mirror sites". Such websites simply mirror or copy what another website has. Then it multiplies to hundreds of websites. Including websites based in other countries. It is impossible to contain a data leak once it is done.

All a bad guy needs is one set of data. Just one set of data. Then everything else can be cross referenced by looking up other pieces of data such as who you are married to, what street you are living on, Facebook, Twitter, Hotmail, Linkedin, etc. A lot of times people make it very easy to find information about themselves by posting details of work history on Linkedin or on Facebook "oh we just got married", "my son was born yesterday", etc.
Most employers these days do monitor Facebook accounts. What you say online can hurt them so that is why they care to look. Facebook is not as secure as people think. Facebook is in the business of making money via your likes, dislikes, what you post, etc. and they create massive data sets. Then they sell this data to third parties. That is why Facebook is free. But many other sites to the same. Google compiles every single search you do and saves it, makes a data set and then sells it.
In terms of data security, most city, state, county and even federal government websites, databases, etc. have poor security parameters. For example, the Federal government's pay is pitifully low for security specialists. Most county and city government's are the same. So a guy who knows what he is doing is going to find a higher and better paying job.
The data is already out there my friends. Two years ago the tact unit brought in two low level street dope dealers. Both told the arresting officers to stop fucking with them and then they told them their home address and also where one of the officer's wife works at. I am just glad that we are not like Mexico where police officers and their families get kidnapped and tortured.
There in NOTHING - NOTHING - NOTHING that could have be done to stop this. It is inevitable.

Not only is that not the way the internet works, its doomed to fail and you're courting the Streisand Effect. Once the information is up, ANYBODY could have saved it and can put it back up anonymously, post it to any number of similar websites that do not require active accounts, or post it to a website with servers that aren't in the jurisdiction. Try enforcing a court order from Chicago on a website with data that is physically stored in Iceland.

If you are the police, why would you have a social media site with you information on it. Friends, places you visit, etc.?

It's going the other way, with the "Internet Of Things." Sales pitch is "Only 1% of physical objects in the world are connected to the Internet, and we aim to change that in a big way." Getting stock tips to buy into the firms that manufacture the sensors that will be used to connect your toaster, toothbrush, toilet, etc. to the Web.
Now, this is ominous...better gas mileage = less fuel tax collected = GPS everyone's car and tax by the mile of travel instead. Oregon is starting it now, 24 other states are "interested," and it will spread.

Do this on your own private device. Dep't is not your friend. Yahoo is nobody's friend. It's really become s__t under its new CEO. Half of the "news" there now is marked as planted, commercially sponsored items. You can't even log on without seeing a whole page of advertising -- and your email account is NOT private. They TELL YOU that they scan your email for keywords in order to send you "targeted advertising." Now they are trying to get your cell phone number "in case you lose your password." No.
I am going to get out of there and spend $50 per year or so for a private email account. In the meantime, I read news on Fox and CNN, for what they are worth. Also dailymail.co.uk and independent.co.uk, you often get a better read on events here from British sites than our own.
Of course I don't go anywhere near social media. Don't want my whole life on the web as an infinitely-searchable commodity. Like the old saying goes, "I ain't that lonely." If you want to put up a little web site regarding an interest or small business, there is plenty of free web hosting available. You don't need F__ebook.
Set your browser to "refuse third-party cookies" and put up a tracking blocker like Ghostery; stops a lot of the sniffers who'd otherwise follow you everywhere you go. Check the site cookies you do accept and wipe them every once in a while.
Keep your antivirus up-to-date and also run malware scans. Don't let your browser save site passwords or use a master password for everything.
When I can, I pay bills over the phone rather than on the web. More secure. I do not use my debit card directly when making little purchases; go to the ATM, get cash, and pay that way. At least your card is only exposed once that way, instead of like nine times a day to God knows what unsecure store-operated systems.
...and watch for people hanging around the ATM looking at their smartphones. Might be running an app to grab the RFID on your debit card. No one comes near me when I'm doing a transaction. Also people in checkout lines pointing that lousy smartphone camera at the terminal you're using, trying to see if they can video your card number and password. Young woman with baby, yet. It can be anyone. F__ers.

Oh -- if you use Google, gmail, etc. with those voice commands on your smartphone, Google is voiceprinting you and storing it.

As another reader commented, anything online IS accessible. How many Facebook pages have I seen with pictures of coppers not only in full uniform, but pics of them answering calls.
How stupid is that! Just because you set your Facebook page to friends only doesn't mean that those select few will be the only ones seeing your whole life ( and family) pictures, likes and dislikes and favorite places to go.
Those pictures can be shared among your friends. But if they are posted on their page and they have neglected to limit who is allowed to view, then the whole world is able to see that pic you posted of you standing there with your kid who just graduated, with you in full uniform standing out in front of your house with your home address visible in the back ground.
It is not a breech, it is public data (name, salary) then put through another site, that scans public data associated with that name, It was manually done by the anti-police group who put it up. That is why there is on a small portion of names listed. ther were similar people search sites in the past.
SPOKEO, FindMe.com, 411 and internet background checks can all check these public records, and for only 4-5 dollars you can gain access for 3-5 days. All you need to start with is a name, and city of residency. You'll get family relations, and their residences. Facebook is for free. And why any police officer would have a Facebook account at at this point in time, just bewilders me. You must be a complete narcissist to do that...

Well, maybe it's time for the MEDIA to check the facts, because if he's really being carried on the medical, it could be a scam to subvert the heart attack disability benefit and rip off the system down the road.
Here's an easy one, media. And don't ask McCarthy's office, which will say he's not on medical. Get your answers from Finance/Payroll or whoever runs the Medical Section.
Something will get done when the Command Staff's info is released.
They don't care about the Police.
