- Even before she was hired to run Chicago Public Schools, Barbara Byrd-Bennett set up a scheme to get a 10 percent kickback on all the CPS contracts she could steer to a former employer, in part to set up a college fund for her twin grandsons, authorities said Thursday.
The feds found damning, detailed emails between her and her ex-boss, Gary Solomon — apparently so damning that Byrd-Bennett will plead guilty in the case involving $23 million in CPS contracts. U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon, in an unusual move, announced Byrd-Bennett’s intention to plead as he announced the charges.
“I have tuition to pay and casinos to visit :)” the feds say Byrd-Bennett wrote in one of many emails discussing the alleged kickbacks.
Between this goof and Rahm's comptroller, who was hired while under a federal investigation in another state before fleeing to Pakistan, how many millions have been stolen from taxpayers while Rahm looks for more blood out of turnips?
Here's a truly bizarre thought - what if the most competent hire that Rahm made, despite his shady background, NYPD antics, CompStat lies, domestic issues, but never gets investigated by the feds, turns out to be McCarthy? No wonder Rahm is keeping him around.

And in one of those e-mails, the Head of the third largest public school system in the United States of America accepted an e-mail where her co-conspirator misspelled the word "principal"! This is why coppers work second jobs to send their kids to parochial schools. The nuns taught us: "The principal is our pal", as a way to remember the difference between principal and principle. This guy worked in 024 where he was given silver spoon then promoted with 5 years to Sgt. transferred to IAD. Works there a few years till he takes a leave of absence to get his Law Degree. Comes back to work in the Corp Counsel and then tries to get job as Inspector General down in New Orleans but is hired by CPS Inspector General office where the current Inspector General quits and Schuler is appointed as IG of CPS
The point is that Mayors office and CPS knew of this sweetheart deal with Barbra Bird Bennet for 2 years, it took a reporter who kept asking questions about NO BID contracts for SUPES for the CPS Inspector General or the Feds to even look at it. WHY?
She never took any money but went into verbal and written agreement that when she resigned from CPS she would get a signing bonus for joining Supes Academy. Kickback

Look at the police "Gold star club" how many do we need? How many are qualified? Maybe 2%? How many are respected? No wonder police moral is at an all time low everywhere! Rahm came into office with no experience in governing a city. What did he know about who is good at managing schools, the police department, ,mass transportation, etc.? He relied on the recommendation of people he know or people he reached out to. Two of the best police chiefs and one great mayor ( now US Senator) recommended MaCarthy. The owner of the education consulting firm who is going to prison with Bennet and who had a great rep recommended Bennet to the mayor. You have to depend on someone. This did not turn out well
The woman who uncovered this who is now with the Better Government Association, was on the news today. She said she was just curious why the school board would give out a contract to an organization in another state when the same services could have been offered by an organization right here in Chicago. The no bid contract was a secondary concern. She looked on line and found in like two or three clicks that Byrd-Bennet use to be associated with the company that got the no bid contract. She asked the the President or CEO of the CPS what he thought about it, so he knew, and said he saw nothing wrong with it. The crime is that NO ONE took a few minutes, literally, to look into this.
