Fox Lake Death to be Ruled Suicide

  • At a Wednesday press conference investigators are expected to announce that they believe veteran Fox Lake police officer Lieutenant Joseph Gliniewicz committed suicide, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the findings

The update is expected to come at 10 a.m., Lake County officials said Tuesday. The briefing will reveal what led investigators to their conclusion.

Investigators are expected to reveal a significant development in the investigation into a veteran Fox Lake police officer’s September shooting, which prompted a massive manhunt in northern Illinois and left a community stunned. (Published Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015)

“One report is claiming to have information about the findings and conclusions of the investigation,” the statement read. "We will have no comment on that or other reports until the news conference at 10:00AM tomorrow. There will be conclusive results of the investigation announced tomorrow. We respectfully urge all members of the media to refrain from reporting as fact; rumors, innuendo, hearsay, and speculation.”
We can't even begin to imagine.

WGN's Nine O'clock News has already reported (on a tip from an FBI source) that the Lt. was suppose to testify in regards to a fund that was missing a significant amount of money that he allegedly spent. This was the day of his death. And he never went to that meeting. ??? FBI is still investigating. His family will be wrecked from this news, and all that National Attention will shame them forever.

This is so sad for his family for this to be dragged out like this. If this proves to be true, someone had to make a conscious effort to make this a line of duty death and keep the truth from being revealed and several others had to remain silent if not complicit which makes this so much more difficult to accept and so much more disheartening because again it would put a huge stain on all of us if true.

Unfortunate as it is, I'm surprised how long this took to air itself. The federal agencies and his own boss couldn't run from this fast enough. Was their an investigation finding or punishment/law suit looming?

To 03:41 and 04:21

I don't believe that there was any conscious effort from the get-go to make this into a line-of-duty death. The people involved in the investigation probably "knew" or felt that there was more to this than first presented. But law enforcement can't blab rumors and innuendo to the public and media. They probably heard the rumors very early on. But until those rumors become double verified facts, nothing can be said. Every step in the verification process has to be completed BEFORE action can be taken.

Not like that AH sheriff in South Carolina that fires a deputy on the basis of a 15 sec video.

What a selfish asshole coward this man was. He stole money to spend on porn, gym memberships and whatever else he could think of. He stole money from a police explorer club none the less. Plus he made his city and surrounding suburbs hunt around a supposed number of offenders. Plus he has shamed his family and made his family live this tragedy all over again. There are some messed up people in our profession.

I pray to the Good Lord that he will forgive him and help his family during this very difficult ordeal. A second ordeal that this family now has to go through. I can't imagine what it must have been like to go through his tragic death the first time around. Then now this news today.

Looks like this guy was no hero. Just someone whose corrupt ways were going to finally overtake him and he could not face it.

People up there to Wisconsin wondering if three cop killers are on the loose in their backyard or their corn field waiting to jump someone else. Scared - for nothing.

Sorry, but a LOT of information seems to have been withheld for a LONG time.

The wife is more concerned about getting the pension than what problems they had. Didn't he have a "girl friend" in the Explorers' post ("allegedly"??)

If noted as a suicide, no pension should be paid out. Did the wife benefit from the skimming he was doing?

It burns me because a LOT of taxpayers' money was wasted on pursuing nothing. AND more importantly, what was the emotional burn/ burden put on every cop and agency responding to this and thinking there are three cop killers out there who may be after me next? You cannot put a price-tag on that.

A lot of emotional capital was spent on this. Plus the big parade. And to be told this now, sheds such a different light on both the individual and the town.

Corruption is just not in Chicago.

I feel very sorry for all the cops and everyone else who poured their hearts out on this - only to find out this was not what it was initially thought to be.

One thing's for sure. He's not here to defend himself. Dead men tell no tales. Anybody remember how the head investigator was so enraged when the lake county coroner wouldn't rule the death a homicide? Maybe he didn't want the rumors and innuendos and talk of a possible suicide ruling because maybe he was also involved in the scam and he needed to clear up some loose ends before the ruling came out. I'm not saying its true but it would be doable since the LT is dead.

This douchebag not only deceived and put other officers at risk, but he sucked in 3 innocent people to his plot whose only "crime" was that he spotted them on his way to carry out his final act of betrayal.

What if there was no video of them that morning, or they otherwise couldn't have been identified? Who knows what kind of messed up twists this case could have taken in that case, especially if pressure mounted to make arrests of "somebody".

Let's not forget also, more than a couple towns in Lake County have gotten it dead wrong in o their investigations, resulting in several people getting railroaded for crimes they did not commit.

So fuck him!

Fox lake did mislead the public. They knew this was a suicide from day one. The chief of police knew the Lt was stealing money, which is why he resigned two days after the suicide. The Lt texted the chief about the money audit right before he did himself in. The so called crime scene was an obvious suicide, but they stalled and designed a plan. No doubt they didn't anticipate the Feds and masses of outside agencies arriving to assist, which is where the truth began to unfold. Fox lake kicked all assisting agencies out,p and called their own lake county task force, who kept up the charade of killed in the line of duty for as long as they could. The mountains of evidence the commander spoke of was ridiculously minute, and many of us could see through his bullshit explanation of what took so long to come to the suicide conclusion. And now the wife and son are involved in the stealing / money laundering scheme! Which means, they also knew the Lt most likely took his own life. Yet they cried on tv and accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in sympathy money.

As always, the real problem here lies with the cover up of the police agency stalling an investigation in the hopes this incident would go away and the world would forget about it. Thankfully the Feds pushed fox lake on Monday saying they were entering the investigation to study the Lts mental state. Lmao. That was a good ruse, fbi. And it worked. You forced Fox lake to come clean with the truth.

I got into this in 1973. 1970 if you count when I was appointed a "special deputy." I have seen a lot of strange and sick things and just when you think you have seen it all something comes along that tops it. So, based on all of this, a few random thoughts.

First, the first thing that hit my mind was that if someone can "carefully craft" a suicide to look like a homicide it could also be possible that someone can "carefully craft" a homicide to look like a suicide. There was some kind of scandal brewing at that PD at the time of this officer's death. Who the Hell knows.

Second, for all who came out to support the officer and his family, you did the right thing for the right reason even if the officer betrayed us. The support people gave the badge still is hopeful even in the face of this disgrace.

There is just something too strange about this not to think there isn't more to the story. But then I am old wheelgunner.

Your naivety bothers me. You're a follower. You're not capable of critical thinking. That's why we are in this situation as a nation. Just because there is a settlement doesn't mean the police were at fault. It means that the city decided to settle the case instead of fighting and defending the police which would mean the case would drag out for years and cost a lot more money because of manpower, time and whatever else the case brings and it would make the politicians look like they're police friendly. The attorneys who sue the police on behalf of their lowlife client know this so they know its an easy payday. The city would rather pay out $50,000 even though there's no merit to the complaint asap rather than have the case drag out costing the city a lot more money. When Jody Weis was superintendent he outsourced the cases to law firms who fought and beat these cases like it was nothing. The filings of these BS lawsuits went down 47% after he did that. But they don't tell you that on NBC or CBS do they and you don't read about it in the sun times or trib. Certain stories are kept secret so the naive don't realize they're getting fucked by the politicians who are friends with these scumbag lawyers. And if having a job so i can pay my bills is thinking i'm god than i guess i'm god. You're a fool. The wool has been pulled over your eyes. Wake up.

You can disagree with this man's actions and still not be a piece of shit about it. He's dead. His family will suffer. The worst of the worst has happened. Maybe that will satisfy you but to sit here and say this taints your career, well you see.....this may or may not have already happened. Not sure if you're keeping up with current events. Anyone with any sort of moral compass is disappointed. We don't need to state the obvious and kick the guy while he's down. Yes, I said it.

Easy to be dismissive. He was a narcissistic thug supervisor criminal coward. Rot Mf'r

11/05/2015 12:05:00 AM

Not dismissive, just a bit compassionate. Apparently, you have no compassion and are quick to throw insults at a deceased man.

As far as your rant, I will dissect it for your small mind.

Narcissist? A narcissist would not take his own life. He would take your life before his own.

A thug? I never heard him called such a thing. When was he a thug?

Supervisor? Not so. As a lieutenant, he was a command member, not a supervisor. A sergeant is a supervisor.

Criminal? Not yet proven, but you could eventually shown to be correct.

Coward? Hardly. He did not just blow his brains out. Yes, he did try to avoid being found out, but he tried to take care of his family as he exited this world at his own hand. Coward? I do not think it is used appropriately in this instance. He served in the Army from 1980 until 2007, in active duty and then as a reserve, leaving as a first sergeant. Does not sound like he was a coward.

So far, you have none correct. And, "rot Mf'r" is a bit strong, but the feeble-minded normally do resort to such things when they cannot participate in orderly discourse. So, shut the fuck up.

I'm not upset with guys that don't wanna kick a man (even a dead one) while he's down and holding on for dear life to the view that just maybe this is all a big understanding. What I don't get is why you think you're any different than the "my baby was a good boy" gangbanger's mom who is in denial. Cops are quick to call everybody out on their bs but want to be slow, deliberate and thoughtful when defending our guys who are dead wrong. One poster wrote that he wont allow officers around him to speak bad about a fallen officer. This fact this guy is referred to as a fallen officer is a disregard for our actual fallen...you the ones who didn't put on a charade to avoid felony prosecution.

Well outside of bullshitting the wife about my uniform allowance, she pretty much knows how much we get paid. So if GI Joe takes the Mrs. on an $8000 vacation to Hawaii, she had to know something wasn't on the square. Aside from that, the whole thing is pretty sad, when you think about all the police coming to honor this guy from all over the country. Hey, just because this guy turned out to be a thief, well that's on him. Those that showed up for his funeral are honorable, compassionate men and women. They set a standard of decency and care that can't be criticized. It's a shame the same can't be said for the decedent.

Just now, oldest Glinowitz son seems to be neck-deep in this -- and it's rising.

He apparently set up a sham marriage with Dad's mistress -- oh, yes -- in order to get military family benefits, coverage, etc. for her and her two kids by some previous liason.

Stay tuned...

...and Lt. Glinowitz' personnel records coming out now -- armed threats, sexual harassment, intoxicated on duty...

His deleted e-mails and stuff have been extracted -- he was trying to slide the sponsorship of the Explorer program over onto some other organization -- the American Legion was mentioned -- so the bank account would be over there, and the new city administrator would not be able to go over it..."but I couldn't get the Mayor to sign off on this..."

Stay tuned.

Suggestion -- Fox Lake chief hold special meeting of Explorers group ASAP. Get some guys from the other Posts to stop by too if they can.

Apologize. "We realize that you young people looked up to Lt. G., and we realize how disillusioned and disappointed you must be now, about more than anyone else in town.

"We want you to know that people are not perfect, some have terrible problems, and we're so sorry that you had to run into one.

"As you know from daily life, for every one bad person there are 100, 500, 1000 good ones who want nothing but the best for you. We are going to continue the Explorers, better than it ever was before, and we are going to make sure that we give you instructors, leaders who will be worthy of your trust and respect.

"We are delighted at the great interest you have all shown in law enforcement as a profession. You are very important to us because you are our future fine officers whom we badly need to serve and protect our fellow citizens, and we hope that you will all want to continue with our program. Many good things are in the works; thanks for coming out tonight, and we really hope we see you all here next time."

There ya go. Feel free to use any of that if you like, Chief.

Makes me think some big old pizzas for everyone would make a nice wind-up, too.

My concern is for all the young people he let down so badly -- but it can be turned into a good early lesson. Play it straight, do it right, be happy with that $96,000/year + you're getting, retire with your good pension at 52, well-liked and respected by everyone in town..that's a real good place to be.

Maybe later on, if/when you get tired of fishing and hunting and unwinding, come on back on the strength of your experience and good rep and do some more good works for people, see what you can get going to make the world even more of a little better place. Petting zoo for the kids, craft classes, helping the elderly...hell, anything is more welcome than this kind of nasty business.

Have faith, all. "This, too, shall pass."
