Police Shooting
- A man and woman were killed in an early morning police-involved shooting following what police say was a domestic disturbance at a West Garfield Park residence.
In a Chicago Police Department statement issued about 9:50 a.m., officials said, shortly before 4:30 a.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 4700 block of West Erie Street and were confronted by a "combative subject," which resulted in the discharging of an officer's weapon. Two people were fatally wounded, the statement said.
That's about all we know and all the media knows. The investigation continues.
Anyone know when the last police shooting was, and the number of shootings in between that had nothing at all to do with the police, so that it can be pointed out how extremely rare police shootings are and that this entire narrative the various movements and media outlets perpetuate is false?

That certainly gives lie to the constant drumbeat of an "out of control" spate of police shootings.

In light of the climate, I think it is prudent to treat every possible situation that requires an escalation of use of force to be handle like a barricaded. Get the victims out and if the only threat is anything but a gun contain him/her and call it a barricaded subject. Why risk approaching and escalating the situation to a life and death scenario. That or wait him/her out, until he falls asleep or comes to his "sense." I know many will read this and spout off how they should never retreat from an arrest. In today's climate our use of force is being called into question and our actions are being dissected as if we had time to rehearse it. Be smart, and give yourself the chance to not be one who's actions are questioned.

I am a retired officer who spent 31 years on the job and was just waiting to reach 60 so the city would pay for my health care because that was the age to go. When I came on the job in the 70' you worked with a FTO who was old timer and you were the young turk who was going to stop crime and be the police. The FTO you worked with knew how to be the police, he had what I did not have as the new guy common sense. That FTO taught me how to deal with situations that I never encounter with in my life by handling that problem while making me watch and learn. I want you to understand during my career that I was no dog but I was no glory seeking PO who want metals on my chest and to tell everyone I WAS THE REAL POICE, I did not work Tact and never wanted too. I work with PO's on the watch who moved on to Tact and would not give you the time of day after they became the real police but when they got dump they wanted to be you friend again. This job is not about glory it is about going home to family, unless you have a godfather or mother you will never get that promotion you seek and no amount of police work you do will ever get you that promotion it just does not work that way. The point that I am trying to make is that the young turks on the job have never been trained to use there common sense they bounce from FTO to FTO if they even work with FTO. They work with a 2 year wonder who does not know his ass from a hole in the ground and that is the training they receive and now you know why they shoot first and ask questions later. Officers involved in shootings will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days. This new policy which was implemented by Superintendent Escalante, will ensure separation from field duties while training and fitness for duty requirements can be conducted. Going forward, this will be standard protocol following all officer-involved shootings.

In the meantime, a fellow copper is being charged with murder for taking action to eliminate a threat posed to the public by an armed assailant. Calling for a car with a taser? That car should be disciplined for failing to take police action.
The next time it may be a hesitation that results in an injured copper or worse, a police funeral... I know we can't strike but VRI is our only way to send a message, and instead, everybody's just acting like it's business as usual. We are not united. We get what we deserve.

Sounds like they set up their own son. They told 911 he was armed with a bat and they were 'in fear for their lives.' They know what to say. They know the lingo. The last fatal police shooting was on Oct 4 at 3500 W Grenshaw St. The last non-fatal police shooting was the off-duty shooting a relative on Dec 20 at 3800 N Octavia Ave.
From Oct 4 through Dec 25, non police people (folks) managed to kill 91 other non police people (folks) and shoot and wound another 534.

Ken, you make some good points, but you go off the rails with the promotion part. Many, in fact, most of the good supervisors I worked with never had a godfather. That is a defeatist attitude and probably part of the reason you never got promoted. I'm sure you had other reasons.
As far as the "young turks" not wanting to talk to you, well (in my best Ronald Reagan drawl), I never cared about what others did unless it had an impact on my life. It's a good way to get through life with fewer complaints and perceived indignities.

What rahm needs to create a special domestic unit. This unit could be called domestic services. A great place for a up and coming clout baby to hide. To the retired PO who commented about COMMON SENSE- Thank you !!!! I, along with my partner,( both with 23 yrs) have been commenting on that same topic for years. We often laugh at some of the decisions that fellow workers make,( wondering what the fuck were they thinking)and usually predict the outcome. Most of the time, these Officers need help with almost every job, either a simple MVA or a noise disturbance. I surely, (and don't call me Shirley)don't have the answers, but it is very noticeable on this job.

Exactly correct procedure. P.O.s should request Supervisors to respond on a routine basis for all Domestics.
The States Attorney is ready to put you in jail for anything, THINK about what your doing and if its worth it. Is the suspect traffic stop worth it? Is the suspicious person stop worth it? Is the contact card stop worth it? Is VRI worth it? The answer is NO. If your selfish, and don't give a shit about your family or your freedom, go for it.

Yes, but the department could have helped by more training and less lethal weapons especially when it comes to mental calls. What are other cities doing in these instances?
READ BETWEEN THE LINES: 1. This kid was a "College Student", and he had a run-in with the Po-Po at Northern Ill. University. 2. The Mom admitted he had "Mental Problems", and had been a Ward of the State in Foster Care for most of his life! Hello Ghetto Lottery, and LaQuan McDonald, who also had mental health issues and spent most of his life as a Ward of the State. Maybe when these kids die in Police Suicides the State not the families should get the pay-out. 3. BUT HERE IS THE MOST REMARKABLE PART OF THIS INCIDENT: a. Rahm must have hired a Real P.R. firm, because the CPD, immediately gave out a "My Bad", to tamp down any Community Organizers from taking control. Neither Daley would have done that. b. The Head of IPRA was on the scene, made a statement to the Press and took charge of the investigation. If this scenario is correct, would it not shift responsibility for the death of the apparent bystander onto the assailant? You kicked off the felony, you catch the load for anything that happens to anyone as a result.
If I recall, one of the three participants in the attempt theft motorcycle and subsequent gunfight involving Ofc. Wortham (spelling right?) and his retired CPD dad got life in prison out of it, even though he never fired a shot. That kind of thing.
No one in this city has the balls to place any responsibility on the mother. If she had addressed her son's mental illness and had made certain that he was given proper medical attention, this would not have happened. I am heartsick for these officers. Once again, they will be crucified for parental shortcomings.
My crystal ball sees all coppers carrying tasers in 2016. You cannot use a firearm until the taser has been deployed and even then you will probably be seen as wrong by the pols and the media.
The only solution will be to place black officers in the black communities and everyone else in there respective group. Enough of this.
I understand the woman was shot and killed by accident. I'm curious, when was the last time an accidental death was caused by an on-duty officer? It looks like it was just that - an accident. We'll see what comes out later, but unfortunatly I believe she was at the wrong place/wrong time. My prayers go out to her family, as well officer(s).

I can see the day we sit in station like firemen and respond to calls with a sgt so he or she can directly supervise the call. I am in Detroit and it is truly sad in that all I seem to hear by the community when someone is shot is "they did not deserve that or it was not the person who was shots fault". Where I ask is the person in the community telling it like it is by saying " this person was a menace to the community and all he had to do is comply" but that is not the community narrative. Yes there are bad shoots but not as often as people think and yes there are bad cops but once again not as many as people may think. Why is it that the police are always at fault?
What happens when all you hear is that the police should not have shot them and that the police were wrong and people protest and get all fired up when a reporter shows up asking about police brutality. I would love to say I feel bad for person who was shot but that would be my wife as she is a much better person than I am. My feeling is that if they are trying to hurt another / you then you have what is coming to you and I feel little sympathy. I suppose I feel some sympathy for the family but my first thought is "where were you while they were growing up and how did they get to the state they are in".

They pulled the police cars that the officers were sitting in while talking to their fop reps to see if the camera mics picked up the conversations. That's not a protected conversation. The fop needs to start sending an attorney out on every shooting since charging the officer is the new norm.

ALL cops in ALL cities have this as appropriate response. You don't try to use a non-lethal weapon when confronted with a lethal one. If this scenario is correct, would it not shift responsibility for the death of the apparent bystander onto the assailant? You kicked off the felony, you catch the load for anything that happens to anyone as a result.
If I recall, one of the three participants in the attempt theft motorcycle and subsequent gunfight involving Ofc. Wortham (spelling right?) and his retired CPD dad got life in prison out of it, even though he never fired a shot. That kind of thing.

A big ol' NOPE when it comes to the 'less lethal' option. Deadly force meets deadly force. Not "well, let's use something gentler because he's sick in the head." Ken, you make some good points, but you go off the rails with the promotion part. Many, in fact, most of the good supervisors I worked with never had a godfather. That is a defeatist attitude and probably part of the reason you never got promoted. I'm sure you had other reasons.
As far as the "young turks" not wanting to talk to you, well (in my best Ronald Reagan drawl), I never cared about what others did unless it had an impact on my life. It's a good way to get through life with fewer complaints and perceived indignities.
After taking my first sgt test I never took another, I saw who got promoted bosses kids who scored very high because they were smart (yeah right). I work with supervisors who could only find there way to work becaused they had to put ribbons around light poles. These same people were to guide me on the street, please they would have put me in jail because they didn't have a clue on what to do. I survived
becaused I use my common sense and trusted very few supervisors(the ones that actually knew what they were doing). This is not a defeatist attitude just fact, your still on the job just look at who is running the show and who get promoted if you think its fair your living in a fanasty world. Ok so the male offender should be charged with the murder of the female neighbor victim. His actions were that of assault with a deadly weapon to his father and to the officers, a felony. His actions contributed to the death of the neighbor.
