Holy Cross Hospital

This was forwarded to us by a couple of concerned people:
  • To the nurse that was working last night (6/13/16) in the ER at Holy Cross Hospital around 9:00pm, who refused treatment to my husband (right to his face) because he was a COP- shame on you! Not only is that illegal in your line of work BUT it shows the type of person you are deep inside which is straight up UGLY. You should be ashamed and embarrassed of your actions. I pray you or your family NEVER are in need of protection or service from ANY law enforcement.

Thankfully it was not a dire emergency but unfortunately for you, I will be finding out your name and writing a letter to the President of the medical staff at Holy Cross. Not only do you deserve to be reprimanded and called out, but you don't deserve the right to call yourself a nurse; one who is there to help and care for people no matter what! Like all professions, it only takes one bad apple to make a bad name for all but I am way too intelligent and know far too many hard working, dedicated, caring nurses out there to have YOU change my thoughts and feelings about them.

As for the nurse that DID treat my husband, I THANK YOU! I will also be finding out your name a writing a letter of encouragement and praise to have more people like you on their staff! Even though it wasn't a life or death situation (Thank the Lord) my family thanks you for being there to DO YOUR JOB no matter who walked through your ER doors.
There is certainly some sort of licensing board for nurses and this should be brought to their attention immediately. Also, the FOP should be notified along with the Superintendent to see who can start some sort of formal proceedings against the hospital for employing someone who acts this way. A lawsuit shouldn't be out of the question either.

Please don't just write a letter. Demand that she is fired and loses her license. Don't settle for anything less or this kind of behavior will continue toward cops. The chief of staff should be made to publicly condemn this type of hostility and unprofessionalism. It's repulsive. Don't just leave it up to the hospital to take care of it. They might just sweep it under the rug. Don't stop until the proper actions are taken. Good luck.

Holy Cross USED to be a Catholic Hospital. With Obamacare, many of the Catholic hospitals have been forced to either sell out to non-Catholic entities who keep the original name in order to deceive people and pretend they're still the hospital the nuns ran out of charity -- or compromise their Catholic identity. Out of integrity, the Church will not do the latter.

Sadly, the government's taking over of health care has forced the former and not the latter to take place more often. It's sickening.

When these FORMERLY-Catholic hospitals so sickneningly treat CPD members the way Holy Cross did in this case, please know that it's NOT a reflection of the Church. The current presidential administration is killing health care, among all other things.

And if criminal Hillary makes the White House, it'll only continue!

Good job Mrs.!! You are to be congratulated...take this through to the proper sources, proper channels...the nurse in question was out of line in her given responsibilities and to her profession. Nothing is NORMAL any more...the word should be removed from the dictionary...The nurse was depraved, insolent nuclear and filled with contempt to have denied care and comfort. She needs to be brought up on charges and her license should be cancelled immediately. She is a danger and a threat to the next patient, perhaps even to her co-workers. Wishing you all the best...it is important to finish this task.

Outrageous. Repugnant. Vile. Unethical. And illegal. The nurse should be fired.

Here are where complaints against the nurse should be sent:

National Council of State Boards of Nursing: https://www.ncsbn.org/filing-a-complaint.htm

Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation: https://www.idfpr.com/Admin/DPR/Complaint.asp

Also, Holy Cross Hospital is part of Sinai Health Systems. The letter should be addressed to Karen Teitelbaum, President & CEO, Sinai Health Systems, 1500 South Fairfield Avenue, Chicago, 60608.

It should also be copied to ALL the executives listed here: http://www.sinai.org/content/sinai-health-system-leadership , including Lori Pacura, President, Holy Cross Hospital.

Just as in LE, witnesses are a good thing. The more people within Sinai Health Systems who are made aware of this disgusting incident, the more likely punitive action will be taken.

All best to the PO and his wife.

Writing a letter will do nothing but have a supervisor tell the nurse to not do that again. Slap on the wrist. Want the nurse to be dragged over the coals and fired or at the very least suspended? Sue Holy Cross and the nurse. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

As someone who has had horrible experiences with nurses, this is an outrage for a nurse not to treat someone simply because he's a cop. I hope something is done to that nurse, as it could have been an emergency. If it was dire, a nurse like that could be responsible for someone's death. This nurse should be fired on the spot.

Gottlieb ER treated me like a ball of dirty rags, by the way. It was more like a sexual assault than like medical treatment. Glad I caught the serious medication error made by Doctor God or I might have bled to death.

I was by myself -- all around me, everyone who had come in with a friend or family member was being treated just as sweet as pie. There's a lesson there.

Go get her lady and lets get that name out in public so some of the rest of us can recognize her actions too. She should be examined and reprimanded and punished if warranted. The hospital must be held accountable too. Someone needs to shine a little light in the hospital management to determine if this is an isolated incident or if there is an adverse culture in development there that requires scrutiny by regulating boards. I still remember the issue with the staff at Northwestern years ago wherein they attempted to prevent armed on duty policemen from entering because of thier anti firearms policy which left them appearing to be very ignorant.

Nurses in Illinois are licensed by the Illinois Department of Professional Registration. Complaints can be filed with them. Also hospitals have requirements to be listed on the City approved list for transport. "Back in the day" we had a problem with a major hospital ED and steps were taken by the City through the Department to correct the problem or be removed. Remember, $$$$ speak and not being on that list (I should mention I don't know if it still exists) gets them in the pocket book.

Can the hospital's operational/incorporating
charter be revoked for non-service?

There is a governing body to address that to.
Right?

Can the nurse be terminated/suspended

You know... Kinda like Policemen.
Right?

How come there is no media stampede
in front of the nurse's home?

How come all manner of investigative

"The public has the right to know?"

Similar incident happened during a recent week long stay at Resurrection Hospital. On several occasions, various nurses that would come on shift would remark about my being a policeman. Although I never mentioned my profession, I learned that it was listed somewhere in my file. Most were very professional and friendly, but one in particular had a definite attitude. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, so I dismissed it without wanting to believe it was a matter of race. Used to be if the staff knew you were a cop you would always receive preferential treatment as a courtesy. Don't get me wrong I'm not looking for special treatment, but god damn treat me like every other patient.

I've felt with her before. We transported a prisoner who was beat up during a domestic stated that to her and she still didn't believe him she was convinced the police did it. She needs another line of work. She is worthless as a nurse and as a person in general. I am not allowed to pick on choose when I do my job neither are the fire fighter emt's soldiers seamen or others that do what we do. Drs and nurses included. Regardless of our personal feelings. So may she would be better suited in another field like basket weaving or selling ocean front property in Arizona

Years ago when I was still on the job, I was working the midnight shift and I transported a female prisoner I had arrested to Christ Hospital for blood and urine samples. This female nurse started in on me right away when I told her why I was there and she continued to rip me a new one in front of other waiting patients. I complained to the doctor in charge and he told me that I wasn't the first cop that she went off on.
The doctor told me that she didn't like the police. I made a complaint to my Chief in writing expecting that some action would be taken against her. Of course the chief didn't want to make waves and nothing happened.

Is this anti police? racial? Please give more info because right now we are reacting to information that does not fulfill the necessary parameters to even write a case report. Facts of ER visit are important to put this in context. Was nurse reacting to seriousness of medical complaint (I.e. Triage) or did she dismiss cop because he was a cop? If she did latter, she should lose her job & license. If cop's illness was not as serious as other patients in ER she did her job. Being a cop doesn't automatically send us to front of line.
Nor should it send us to back of line. I hate it when passing motorists who didn't see crime yell at me for having someone on hood of car. They weren't there & don't know what I saw & why I did my job.

Maybe nurse deserves same consideration. If facts turn out she refused service because patient was a cop, we can rightfully attack her then.

Isn't it the same preferential treatment they always request when they are stopped for traffic? First thing you hear is " I'm a nurse or doctor at so and so hospital" immediately looking for a courtesy but we go to the hospital and identify ourselves and get treated like shit. This is the continuing liberalization of our country, which they start in grade school as they indoctrinate the kids and teach them how evil the police are. It will only get worse.

"Similar incident happened during a recent week long stay at Resurrection Hospital. On several occasions, various nurses that would come on shift would remark about my being a policeman. Although I never mentioned my profession, I learned that it was listed somewhere in my file."

OLR/Presence/Community North keeps all sorts of non-medical information in its files, some of it decades old and inaccurate. You can always tell when the lady at reception tilts her head back and reads and reads and reads through those little half-glasses, and from that point onwards it's the fish-eye from everyone you deal with.

Wow. I came up in the ER in Chicago ( St Mary of Nazareth ) back in the 70's and 80's. We always had a great relationship with the PD, and I've tried to keep that up everyplace I've worked around the country as an ER doc since then.
This bitch needs to be reported to the State Licensing Board ASAP. Contact the Hospital CEO, the Hospital Board of Directors, and the Department Chief of the Emergency Department. Sounds like a great story to get on the local FOX news station, WGN, etc.

Northwestern Memorial tried to make us lock up our guns before we entered the hospital from time to time. Sgt. Jack Runyan told them that no Chicago Police Officer would ever enter that hospital unarmed and with a partial uniform. They relented.
RIP Sgt. Runyan

I say sue the hospital and get paid on discrimination and that nurse needs to be fired.. Screw a letter make sure her name is plastered everywhere and get her fired. Unfortunately it's not newsworthy because your husband is hated by the BLM of Chicago including the superintendent, the mayor and all the alderman.

To the woman that wrote this post, if this happened I wouldn't just write a letter about the POS who refused him service.
I would be at the hospital to DEMAND to see the administrator who runs the hospital, along with the head of the H. R. Dept.
And I would do it ASAP.

Doesn't the insurance card still say 'Department of Police'? If not, the plan code certainly tells them all they need to know.

First, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has commented and shown support. Second, I would like to assure everyone we are taking all actions to make sure this "nurse" isn't allowed to do this again to ANYONE else. The officer was being treated by a male nurse who then asked another nurse for help for the cop he was treating when she voiced out loud, "I don't like cops. He's not my patient so I'm not helping him." The police officer never said a word to her after those words were spoken but left once he was finished being treated. The male nurse was asked later if indeed the woman spoke that way and he in fact said she did. The hospital has made a public statement on their Facebook page in my opinion admitting guilt. Again, I thank everyone for their outpouring of support and it truly has been a family who all sticks together to make sure ALL are protected.

Sometimes things happen whereby a person or CPD Officer must get to a hospital quickly even though they are not truly satisfied with the facility....thats why Emergency Rooms were developed. As for Holy Cross Hospital...Correct....it used to be a decent Catholic Hospital. Now, it partnered with the University of Chicago due to Obamacare....it can't give abortions for example or the pill...U of C can do that and the partnership also took place cause HXH is out of dollars. Amen brother!! Cardinal Cupich, where are you??

Yes this is true. I was working at NMH at the time. The three goofs who were running security at Northwestern now run security at Mt.Sinai. They lack common sense and ethics so be careful. The director of security at Mt. Sinai was so bad his mother fired him .

Well I'm an Ed Rn and I can assure you I have never turned away police service. There are always two sides to every story. The problem I have in this situation is that everyone is bashing nurses on this webpage or this certain one with out knowing all the facts now being that this is a police web blog I thought for sure police would know find out all facts before accusing. We all should be working together especially since we are all first responders. But attacking each other does no justice for anyone. I pray all our officers are safe on these crazy streets. God bless
