Off-Duty Attacked, Injured
- An off-duty police officer who intervened in a disturbance is hospitalized this morning after being knocked unconscious by an offender who then went through his pockets as he lay on the corner of Clark and Addison early this morning.
Two people are in custody, but the primary offender remains at large, police said. The entire incident was captured on a Chicago Police Department pod camera at 12:41AM.
CWB Chicago has independently secured a recording of the attack that, incredibly, reveals that one of the people the cop tried to help repeatedly urged her boyfriend to leave the unconscious cop lying on the street:
Based on our review of the recording, a disagreement develops on the street between a woman and a man who said that the woman’s boyfriend had “disrespected” him. The boyfriend arrives on the corner and the situation quickly escalates. Soon, a voice can be heard repeatedly shouting “STOP! Off-duty police!”
About 15-seconds after the off-duty officer arrives, he is blindsided and knocked unconscious by a punch to the head. Video reviewed by CWB Chicago editors shows the intersection of Clark and Addison bustling with traffic at the time of the attack.
The transcript is something else:
- The recording reviewed by CWB Chicago shows that the girlfriend repeatedly tried to get her boyfriend to leave the scene and abandon the off-duty cop as he lie on the street.

That entire area is notoriously under-policed, which led the aldercreature to sell his vote to Rahm's budget in an effort to boost the numbers, and it still wasn't enough. Wrigleyville is rapidly becoming a dangerous place, with the wildings, group batteries, so-called "scalpers" who, instead of selling you tickets, drag you out of camera view and pretty much strip you of everything you're carrying.

The incident took place under a 24/7 webcam that is aimed at the Wrigley Field marquee. While the attack took place out of the camera's view, audio was captured. We have been reliably informed that Area North detectives secured the webcam's recording on Tuesday.
His biggest problem was the fact that he got involved in something off duty. Something "ghetto" based on the whole "disrespected" aspect of it.
Hell, unless it's family or friends, why get involved at all? I'll bet he never does that again. Copper should be thankful he's alive and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

Not a cop but a black lifelong resident of Chicago. I read this blog and also CWB for the real news. It is appalling the lack of coverage of these incidents. For a off duty cop to get beat like this and the offenders knew he was a cop? What the fuck indeed. But if they would have gotten shot there would be lawsuits by the blood sucking lawyers. The other day there was another stupid march on the south side, on 67th. Someone approached me and we almost got into it. I told him and others that could hear me. We need the mothers to turn in the bangers and the weapons today. Fuck the bullshit about racist cops. 18,19 and 20 year old black men dressing up as women robbing people? This does not happen in Deerfield, Northbrook, Glenview, any of the burbs. Tired of the damn excuses about what we do not have. I grew up in the damn projects. Most of these kids have cell phones which cost more than TV's, expensive shoes, get a few good meals a day. Internet access is free at most libraries, if you get decent grades and stay out of trouble you get a free ride to most colleges because you are black, yeah I said it. This is just fucking tiresome to read this bullshit day in and day out. And the saddest part these are the crimes that are reported. Stay safe officers.

Not to bash the ODPO, but it probably wasn't wise to intervene in what was essentially a domestic on a crowded venue full of heavy drinkers. Hope he is on the road to recovery soon. If was armed at the time, he's double-lucky he wasn't disarmed and killed for his troubles. THINK before you decide to intervene while off duty. The life you save may well be your own.

Stop with the false numbers people! As of yesterday there are 10,718 active patrol members of the FOP. Of course all of those people are not all in beat cars and include detectives, et's marine, canine, mounted.
If we are ever going to get things done we have to stop providing a false narrative just like people are saying the city is doing these graduates and promotions.
FOP should come out and say we have 10,718 active members but those include the above mentioned po's assigned as detective, et's, marine, etc. Then we also have X amount of those 10,718 people assigned/detail to inside spots at the academy, headquarters, areas, districts which leaves us with X amount of patrolman actually sitting in a beat car answer calls.
Just so you are ready though the flip side of this will be the City will send all those active duty po's to the street and replace them with civilians like they are at the desk, FOI, ERPS. The city is not going to hire 3,000 additional PO's. They will continue to "civilianize" clerical spots inside and shift those po's outside. When they do this you can not bitch that I lost my inside desk spot or inside clerical spot.

Well I just scratched going to a Cubs game in Wrigley Field off the bucket list. In fact Chicago as a whole is off limits to my family, what a disaster.
Used to go down to that area of an evening to check out the many wonderful used bookstores -- almost all gone now, targeted and driven out of business by the big operators, some of whom later failed themselves. Nice hobby shop gone too, other places I used to like.

I learned to avoid nights when there was a game getting out at Wrigley -- drunken white smartass punks, do that "tap you on the left shoulder then duck to the right" thing, other threatening people demanding money and saying "I could be robbing you." I just laughed at that one. Beggars in costumes, Carhartt overalls and hard hats, waving a dirty car part at you, "construction worker had me a breakdown and needin' to get back to Texas right quick." Followed him into the Walgreens and saw him dragging lots of green out of the front of that outfit; the clerk told me he had $400 small changed into larger bills while buying cartons of cigs, a couple fifths of good booze, and some lottery tickets.

If you want to play hero off-duty in situations involving animals who can't control themselves, it's easier and probably a little more effective to just say "police." Adding in the "off-duty" part just tells the offender that you don't have backup, that you don't have a radio, that you might not be armed, and that he doesn't have to listen to a thing you say. The shitheads think you punch out and become an ordinary citizen. That's why they always say "take that badge and that gun off" or "come to my hood on your day off" when they want to act like they'd fight you. They think you're not really the police when you're off-duty. You should start thinking the same way. See a crime? Call 911 and wait around to tell the responding officers what you saw, especially if it's ghetto drunken street fight nonsense. Do not get involved unless someone is about to die, and you can stop it from happening without endangering yourself too much. This shit happens every second of every day in the ghetto, and the involved parties live for it. You tried to get involved in their everyday activities as an outsider who doesn't really understand them. You're either brand new to this job or soft as puppy shit. Even if you were on duty when you saw this, you should just yell for them to stop from the comfort of your car while you wait for more cars to arrive. Get the numbers in your favor before attempting to intervene. No one wins when a cop goes in to break up a fight over nonsense and ends up getting injured. I've looked. You will be disappointed. Make sure you check the taxes and drive time. Drive through the neighborhood at different times. Some schools are better, some are not. I stayed put and I didn't have to like you do.
Milwaukee and Wisconsin did NOT have a law in place like there is here. It was an internal policy that forced the workers to reside there.

Those of you talking about the Wisconsin Supreme Court decision regarding Milwaukee residency should probably read the summary of the case or at least the news reports from Milwaukee. The basis of the decision was a state law that prohibited Milwaukee from enforcing a residency requirement. Quite different from the situation in Chicago.
"OFF DUTY POLICE!" WTF is this? Chciago PD on NBC?? If you aren't working, do what your HRI told you to do... Dial 911 report it and then go about your business. Not worth getting hurt or catching a CR on some off duty hero bullshit.
Being a good witness may not be a good idea. Do you really want your full name, home address, and phone number on a police report that will probably be turned over to the offenders lawyer, through discovery? And how many civilians working for the city, will have access? Staying anonymous may be the wisest choice.

I am also am officer that was assaulted by two thugs while going to a doctors appointment at Swedish Hospital on Foster and Francisco. Had the description of the vehicle the plate and two shit-birds but still have not heard from the detectives and not a peep from the hospital security other than the camera only covers the bicycle rack and nothing else. Thank god for citizens that helped me out and chased off the offenders. The north side is not safe at all and not even for o/d LEOS . This happened at 1pm while going to the hospital for a doctors Appointment. If you see this vehicle green two door 2000 Toyota Camry il plate z838174 male Hispanic 5'9 med complexion muscular and female white long brown hair heavy about 160lbs no visible tattoos on either that I can remember. Both were in their late 20's or 30's.RD HZ-321535.
