Promising Life Cut Short
- The 19-year-old son of a Chicago police officer was shot and killed Sunday morning, hours before he was due to return to college in New York, police and family members said.
The shooting took place in the Wrightwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side just after midnight, according to police.
Neighbors in the 2900 block of West 82nd Street reported hearing several gunshots. Police arrived to find 19-year-old Arshell Dennis and another man, age 20, wounded by gunfire.
Reports in the media are saying it was a case of mistaken identity, which is of absolutely no comfort to the family we're sure. Deepest condolences to Officer Dennis and the entire Dennis family on their tragic loss.

My heart aches when the life of a fellow officer is torn under circumstances such at this. My sincere and deepest condolences.
My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the Dennis family.
My hart goes out to the Family. I can't imagine what they are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I will wear my memorial band in his memory all week.
This is why the FOP needs to fight residency. It's not part of the contract however, FOP is the biggest Union who has Lawyers. chicago has become to violent for Police and their families. It isn't going to get any better before I retire. There just isn't enough jobs here.
God bless everyone.
Horrible just horrible my deepest sympathy & condolences to Chico I am sooo sorry for your loss brother!!!!!
And ... another once nice area.
As a father of two teenage sons, I can't even imagine the enormity of the pain and suffering of the Dennis family. My prayers will begin at the finish of this post. So sorry for the loss of this young man.
My heart goes out to this officer and his family.
How sad. Here's a black kid that is doing everything right.
Prayers for the family.
RIP
Our family likewise grieves for your loss.
What a shame. Condolences to the family. I hate to say it but if you can afford it, get your kids out of Dodge. Visit them at college, have them stay with out of town relatives during breaks from school...
That really sucks.
Condolences to Officer Dennis and his family. My God, when is this madness going to stop?
With all of the notices about gangs targeting cops, I can't help but wonder if this house was targeted specifically for that purpose. My heart goes out to the family of the young man.
That area was once pretty ,, crap moving in from the East Side ... Shame ....
My deepest sympathy for this young man's family.
As a father I cannot image the pain your going through at this time.
With 30 years serving this city, and having family also on the job, I have to ask this question,
Would this young man be dead right now if the city did not have residency rules?

I've lost count of the number of stories I've heard about "Got off the block, was living far away and doing OK, but came back to the hood just one more time for sister's/brother's/cousin's birthday party, graduation/whatever and never made it back out."
The thugs seem to have a nose for this. The block reclaims its own. No one here gets out alive.
Talk about a demonic, negative force...
I do not know them but my thoughts and prayers are definitely with them my deepest condolences to this family

You 'hate to say it', but you couldn't help yourself, right?
The young man lives out of Chicago, but came in as a birthday surprise to his mom, who was sick. In other words, he was doing everything right, was a good person with a good heart. Can we not leave it at that and send our very deepest condolences?
May the Good Lord bless you and your family. Such a terrible loss.
My deepest condolences to the Dennis family. I can't imagine the grief they are going through considering that boy was doing everything right but Chicago is so dangerous it's taken another life, senseless violence it's getting out of hand.
God bless the Dennis family , help them get through this horrible time. FOP , sue , get residency now. Police are targeted around the country by design get our families to safer areas

Oh, God, another tragedy like this. I was right, unfortunately.
"Can we not leave it at that and send our very deepest condolences?"
Absolutely. Prayers, blessings, and deepest sympathy to family and friends here, and may the good Lord help you all through this dark and terrible place.
As the poem on my wall here goes, "When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
So sorry.
Why was Jamal green there ? Sickening.
My condolences to Officer Dennis and his family during this time of unimaginable loss. May God Almighty heal your broken heart.
