- Whoever made the command decision to put 77 recruits in long sleeve shirts a tie, blue baseball caps, day glow green safety vests NO duty belts, NO ballistic vests, NO radios on the irons at the parade needs to be fired immediately.
Ultimately Escalante and Johnson signed off on the order.

As I recall when I was a recruit we were sent out in KAHKIS. We were supposed to be with uniform officers but they took off to lunch and never returned. Kids gotta learn.

I was amazed and p'ed off to see those recruits exactly as described. Long sleeve, tie, caps, and those shooting target traffic vests. Beside the fact that it was a sauna out there....
Not entirely true. They did have long sleeves and ties on, which I guess all recruits must wear until they are done with the academy. Whoever the genius behind that idea should have to stand out there like that. But they did have their vests and radios, just no guns. On a side note, the group that took over the parade should receive an award. By the time the some attendees rolled out of bed and got there the parade was over. 3 hours start to finish, down from 6. Well done.
They did have ballistic vests and a radio.... But still dumb.
It reminds me of the war movie "They were expendable". Hopefully the recruits left their wallets and sail fones at home and were told by their instructors to carry a ghetto roll in case they got jacked.

Unfortunately for the recruits the only uniforms they wear in the academy are long sleeves. This is because of the tattoo ruling and they want them to look uniform. I get that. I also get the fact that it would suck for them to have to purchase a short sleeve shirt for the detail. They were (originally) posted along the route inside the irons. This is probably the safest place for them. Generally they only deal with people lined up along the rail and for the most part they were very well behaved. The part that was really messed up was when good ole Car 200 b(T-Dub) decided that when the tail passed to re-deploy them into the crown on the service drives west and west side. Again, no guns, no cuffs, no vests and stretched them out for blocks at a time.
This shit started with Phat Phil.
He demanded to use recruits in khakis for all this nonsense to inflate the numbers so he could tell Shortshanks that he had X amount of officers out there.
Prior to Phatty, they only used the recruits who were in blues and had guns.
Terry "twice demoted" Williams at his finest yesterday. He starts moving around platoons of PPO's as if they were armed and had vests. Moving them into the crowd. Then worst of all making everyone stand around for 2 hours while they collected up the irons. This was probably One of the best Billiken Parades (minus the NOBLE contingent) that I've been part of. There had to be 1/2 the floats and marching bands as previous years and the Marshalls were keeping them moving. It was over in about 3 hours. The unlicensed food vendors barely had time to start cooking their salmonella laced chicken before the tail car came past and everyone left. I saw pounds of half cooked chicken being thrown away. Sign me up for next year. As long as Williams isn't in charge again

How about Williams riding around on that pimped out CPD golf cart with TWO drivers. He made sure he was out on the cart when N.O.B.L.E. And their group of institutionalized cheaters marched by. This guy is so clueless that he didn't know tact teams from recruits. Hint T-Dub, recruits were the ones in the long sleeves along the line of March. If you read the order or showed up at either of the pre-event briefings you would know. And if you had ANY common sense you would have stayed with the original plan of putting the recruits back on the busses after the tail car passed them NOT redeploying them INTO the crowd with NO GUN and NO VESTS. You're a moron Terry and have no business being a commander. You are a punk and would probably be running a dope tip if daddy didn't get you through the background check.
The department feels that it can do anything they want to recruits. Some years back they actually had all of the recruits shoveling snow from the CTA tracks after a large storm. Never forget that you have these hacks running government here, the worst run state and city in the country, run all for the benefit of the political class and their wallets.
Calloway and the bosses at the academy should have stopped this. But trahanas, our new C/O of special event planning knows best I guess. We have no bosses left that fight for what's right anymore. Or they don't know what's right which is worse.

I was there and I'd have to say this years parade was better then the other 20 I've done. It was quick, the organizers denied all of the so-called "dance groups" that consist of 10 girls and a fat dude pushing broken down shopping cart full of speakers and a car battery. (And don't forget the fattest brother pulling the cooler of water for the girls. All of those were eliminated this year. I was surprised to hear that the last float as on the move at about 11:30.
There wasn't one call of "large group of teens", not one "citizen is saying man with a gun", not even one call of a fight. I think it was too early for the gang bangers to get up and the key was the parade was short enough to keep people's attention. In years past when the float count was upwards of 200, the teens lose interest at about 25 and resort to entertaining themselves by running for no reason, fighting just be cuz and stealing when they can.

In this climate why would the department have anyone wearing the glow in the dark vests. They are making targets of police officers. Who makes these decisions? Unreal.
We were fresh in our khakis, no vest, no gun for the Bulls Championships. We were told we would be INSIDE helping with any processing. The the districts thought they were getting the class ahead of us. They had their vests and guns. The academy didn't want to send that class because then they would be late graduating and were needed for the Democratic Convention. The districts were pissed. When we finally got back our classroom Sgt asked each where we were sent and what did we do. Some we kept inside, but others like myself were out in the street having rocks thrown at us. Some of the boys and girls in blue thought it was funny. They had helmets long sticks and shields and we had ballpoint pens. I haven't forgotten those assholes but I forgive them. What's old is new the only difference is that it's nice to read that people care about our new brothers and sisters. We old timers need to look out for them and they in turn need to listen to us crusty old fucks. Remember we are still here 20 plus years because we all did something right.
I'm so happy that my kid went to a suburban department. Makes just as much as a CPD officer. These idiot bosses here have no common sebse, no street experience and Eddie Johnson, you should hang your head in shame. You are a disgrace, Escalante should hope he gets that job at North Park.
How About the inspectors going around harassing the coppers about wearing a baseball cap. Did they even read the order? It says "field uniform of the day". Nowhere does it say crown caps and if it did that would mean no cargo pants too. Read the order inspectors. Especially the part that says you too need to wear the reflective vests like we do.
We are led by the most incompetent hand jobs I have ever seen in my 23 years on. Two more and I'm out.

I'm surprised. That academy has been run by a bunch of asshats that have no better business running anything. PC being what it is, don't feel sorry for these recruits. They pretty mush do what they want in that academy. Can't make them do much of any physical activity, can't yell at them, no discipline what's so ever, and they think they're entitled. Half of those instructors shouldn't be there, you shoot off a live round showing some recruit weapons drawing in the hallway and what happens? You get dumped to driving school. Shooting skills taught? Yeah sure keep shooting until you qualify. I want lawyer!

I was there, and talked to one... NO VEST, other then the lime green one and NO RADIOS... They raised questions to supervisor about saftey and were told that they are "at will employees" and can find a diffrent job if they do not like it

Long sleeve shirts and ties for recruits was decided by Lt Sesso at the academy with Calloway. They want discipline with long shirts. It is all about appearance according to Calloway. The academy has cut in half the physical standards but they will wear long sleeve shirts and ties.

They got into marked squad cars and drove off for driving practice. It might not be the busiest area of the city but these guys were sitting ducks. Targets with no way to defend themselves. And by the way it was one of those "ozone action days" where it was in the 90's but felt like 110 degrees. So let's place these kids in a stressful situation high speed driving in shit cars with no a/c and make the where long sleeves and ties. Brilliant. Who's ever in charge of that shit show is a goof. When one of these guys passes out from heat exaustion and runs into a pole or tree this goof can explain to the family why he had their son or daughter dressed in Long sleeves and t tie when it's 110 degrees. It really goes to show there is no common sense among our supervisors.

Vests were under their shirts. Worked it several years ago and an unarmed recruit got into a foot chase with an on view shots fired offender. Doh!
We were sent to a funeral on a cold day, since we were in the academy during the summer months and only a few had purchased jackets, we couldn't have jackets, just short sleeves on a cold morning in late September or early October.
If I were the FOP, I would tell them to hire civilians. These people are police, not prison correctional employees.
Absolutely no one should be surprised by this and it's been going on for awhile. They had told us a few years ago in the academy that once we had our vests they could send us to any detail needed.
Then you wonder why nobody wants this shit job and veteran Officers are leaving as fast as they can!

Ryan told everyone at the "pre meeting" no one is to wear baseball caps however no one changed the Order which is why NO ONE WAS HARASSED nor written up....they mentioned that Ryan said no BB caps so watch out. All of this was way before the parade started.....damn you guys are dumb!
